Giants’ Latest Roster Moves

By TC Zencka | June 1, 2021 at 9:51pm CDT

The Giants made a number of roster moves on Tuesday, provided here by Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group (via Twitter). On the pitching front, San Francisco purchased Dominic Leone’s contract from Triple-A and optioned righty Nick Tropeano. The recently-acquired Sam Delaplane was also moved to the 60-day injured list.

The well-traveled Leone has a 4.09 career ERA over 253 career innings for the Mariners, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays, Cardinals, and Indians, for whom he pitched in 2020. Tropeano, 30, pitched well in four appearances, giving up just one earned run in six innings. He threw two scoreless against the Angels on Monday, so his demotion could simply be about getting a fresh arm in the bullpen.

The Giants also made a change behind the plate, placing Curt Casali on the 10-day injured list with a left wrist sprain. He’s not expected to be out for more than the 10-game minimum, writes Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Those hoping to see top prospect Joey Bart will be disappointed, however. It’s reasonable to assume that the short-term nature of the injury does not warrant disrupting Bart’s development.

Instead, Chadwick Tromp has been recalled to serve as Buster Posey’s backup behind the plate for the next 10 days. The 26-year-old backstop debuted last season, posting a 65 wRC+ in 64 plate appearances.

Lastly, Crowley adds that Evan Longoria’s injury appears to be a mild intercostal strain, and he’ll avoid a stint on the injured list. Longoria is enjoying a resurgent season at the plate this year with a 139 wRC+ and 1.5 fWAR through 178 plate appearances.

No surprise about Bart. Even if he makes the team in 2022, it will still be without a lot on MiL development. Had there been a MiL season in 2020, we might have seen Bart this year.

Here we go….dude is hitting 380 in AAA. Casalli is hitting .104. Maybe they should send casalli down to finish his development lol.

Giants are 100% abusing their authority w Bart. Him and ramos are arguably the best two hitters on roster not named posey.

How bout giants play their best players and try to win the West?!?

Naw, they rushed him up last year and with Posey crushing it this year he won’t get enough games. The guy needs to get a lot of ABs right now.

bot, no offense, but I’ll trust Farhan Zaidi’s judgment over yours. Casali provides value behind the dish and the Giants have the best team in baseball. Please don’t be like those Dodger fans who think they know more than “Fraudman” and Roberts. Know thy place, which is in front of the TV watching.

Giants are not the best team in baseball….lmao

Their best player would be the 6th best player on the Dodgers and their ace would be the 5th starter on the Dodgers….

Injuries have killed the Dodgers so far but make no mistake….the Dodgers make the Giants look like a minor league team….

It’s still early but I guarantee u by September the Dodgers are at least 10 games better than the Giants….

The problem is the Giants face an issue. Casali can’t hit but he has caught most of the Giants’ shutouts this year. Do you push him down or keep him up? I myself am up in the air here. What do y’all think?

I’d keep Casali up. He is very valuable to the pitching staff and with the way the other hitters are hitting i think we’ll be ok with a for sure out in Casalis bat. Bart won’t get the ammount of AB’s he needs to develop well if he is rushed. Everyone forgets that 2020 was a crap year for baseball and sports in general. Everyone is a year behind. Hopefully Bart can keep developing but I trust the regime so far.

When u can hit – there’s plenty of other places to play than behind the dish. Bart and ramos should be suited up in SF. Neither has nothing left to accomplish in minors except service time

Casalli had five straight shut outs, and helped get Webb back on track. He offense has been horrible, but the pitch calling is legit.

Casali won’t bat .100 for the season. No point trying to fix what isn’t broken.

If you think the catching position is all about how you’re hitting at AAA then you need to think again. Catchers need more time in development than any other position because of all the things they need to know how to do at the ML level, and hitting isn’t one of them.

Posey spent less time in the minors than most, and he had 82 games at AAA, and 162 between A+ and AAA. Bart has only 13 games at AAA, and 92 between A+, AA (22) and AAA.

Most teams depend on the catchers to call pitches, handle the pitching staff, know how to pitch to every batter the team will face, control the running game, and other things, like controlling pace. If a guy can’t be depended on to do all those things at the game’s highest level it doesn’t matter how well he hits at AAA. Every catchers greatest contribution is what he does behind the plate with a glove, not at it with a bat.

If Bart were ready, he would be in SF. Not sure how someone not directly involved can know that he is, when the Giant’s FO, and Sacramento coaching staff, don’t.

        bot:

You have exposed your ignorance about baseball, at least as far as the pitching/catching aspects of the game. With Posey and Casali the Giants have the best defensive catching duo in all of baseball.

When you say Casali should go back for his development, you totally miss that 90% of a catcher’s development is for playing the position, not for the hitting. And Casali is miles ahead of Bart in the most important part of a catcher’s development.

By focusing on just hitting, you’re ignoring half the game, for most positions, and 75% to 90% of the game for catchers.

You seem to forget that the catcher is part of the pitching game. Most teams understand that the value of how well the catcher hits pales in comparison to how well the pitching staff performs. A catcher has far more impact on his team’s success with his position play, and his role in the pitching game, than he does with his hitting.

Casali has been an asset handling the staff even though he hasn’t hit.

Tonight in Cincinnati: Infielder Alex Blandino surrenders a grand slam to the Phillies’ Matt Joyce, Blandino is then replaced by fellow infielder Mike Freeman, who strikes out reliever Archie Bradley to end the inning. Just another night at the ballpark in 2021.

Bell is going to be the first manager in history to wear his infielders out on the mound. I can’t wait for Votto to get healthy and toss a few innings. Or maybe let Suarez pitch since he’s been hitting like a pitcher.

The Giants pitching is one of the main reasons that they are where they are in the standings. Keep Casali right where he is. As stated by others, his experience and success behind the plate outweigh his batting performance. Bart needs reps….which he won’t get as long as Posey keeps up his performance.

The Giants best hitter would be the 5th or 6th best hitter on the Dodgers and their ace would slide into the 4th or 5th spot in the Dodgers rotation….

Injuries have killed the Dodgers this season but make no mistake….the Giants are not the best team in baseball or in their own division for that matter….

They are mediocre at best but got off to a great start….this time in August they will be several games behind the Dodgers and the Padres….

Gausman is the Giants ace. He has a 274 ERA+. Bauer has the highest ERA+ of any Dodger SP and it’s 170. Not arguing that the Giants have a better rotation, but clearly you’re wrong on that point.

Not only is Posey’s OPS+ of 173 better than any catcher the Dodgers have, but it’s also better than any hitter on their team, so wrong again.

No one, to my knowledge, has claimed the Giants to have more talent than the Dodgers. I haven’t. Injuries have hurt the Dodgers, but they’ve hurt the Giants as well. The Giants are a good, well-balanced team, that might, or might not, win a WC. But they’re playing well, and nothing that they’re doing is unsustainable.

Clearly your opinion is not unbiased. Not sure why you hate the Giants so much that it’s not allowed you to see reality. But it does make your posts less credible than most.

tad2b13….the Dodgers make the Giants look like a minor league team period….

Betts and Bellinger and Turner and Taylor and Seager….and Muncy….sorry Posey is good but not on their level….Posey’s value comes as a catcher….because as a 1B he is too soft at the plate….

Gausman is pitching way above his career ability etc….so tell me how I am wrong by saying he would be the 4th or 5th starter on the Dodgers….?

Sure Gausman and the rest of their crap rotation is pitching good but just give it time….DeScafalini has never been good and Gausman has shown signs of being good but not this good….give it time lol

Buehler and Bauer and Kershaw are all bonafide aces….Urias may be someday as well….

Gausman is the ace on the Giants by default….because they don’t have a 225 strikeout ace….but my comments were not wrong….the Dodgers are far better than the Giants and it’s only a matter of time before the Dodgers run away from the Giants….take that to the bank….
