Marlins Outright Luis Marte

By Mark Polishuk | July 3, 2021 at 8:57pm CDT

JULY 3: Marte has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville, per his transactions log at MLB.com. He’s apparently accepted the assignment, as he’s listed on the Jumbo Shrimp active roster.

JUNE 30: The Marlins have designated infielder Luis Marte for assignment.  The move makes way for infielder Joe Panik (acquired in yesterday’s four-player trade with the Blue Jays) to be added to Miami’s active roster.

This is the second time this month that Marte has been DFA’ed, with the first move coming after Marte had appeared in just one game with the team, making his Major League debut.  After being outrighted off the 40-man roster, Marte had his contract selected again on June 19, this time seeing action in three games and collecting his first hit as a big leaguer.

Marte joined the Marlins on a minor league deal this past offseason, following a decade of action in the Rangers and Braves farm systems.  The 27-year-old native of the Dominican Republic was originally signed by Texas in November 2010, and Marte has hit .249/.270/.337 over 3184 career PA in the minors.  Because this is his second DFA of the season, Marte has the option of declining another outright assignment if he chooses to test free agency.

I feel bad for Panik, going from a contender to a last place team. And bad for Marte too, of course.

.293 obp, .351 slg, combining with negative fielding for a -0.3 bWAR, -0.1 fWAR

Going to the Marlins is better than being released, which was likely the other option

Yeah, I know that he hasn’t played well since 2017, but it must still hurt to get traded to a cellar-dweller. At least if he were released he would have a say in who his next team would be.

Surprised the Marlins would designate Marte now. Why not hold onto him until July at least see what value they could potentially get back in a trade. If I was the GM I would trade him to Botson.

This isn’t starling. Luis has zero value

I know which Marte it is. If I meant Starling I would have said Startling. Call me crazy but Luis is on the verge of a breakout, I could see him being an all-star as soon as the 2023 season. Boston needs some infield depth and might try to claim him off waivers.

What do you see in him that is potential All-Star caliber? I’m genuinely interested, he hasn’t even hit well in the minors

He has a career .608 Ops in the minors. Does that not translate in the short TicTok videos?

Before we bash the guy for predicting that Luis Marte will be an All Star, let’s consider that he may have an inside tip on Marte perhaps like a unicorn sacrificing its horn to create a bat that swings itself, and that instead of pine tar, Luis will be using leprechaun magic dust to grip the bat, and he’ll have eye transplants that were donated by a Kryptonian.

Other than that, he may have been referring to being an All Star in a beer league for the Walmart Whammers.

I had typed it before I saw your above response so I posted it too late. Marte is basically bench depth in the minor leagues

Except for wildly overvaluing a scrub as a potential all star….yeah, sure.

Congratulations on making your major league debut and getting a hit while earning free healthcare for life.

He was fortunate enough to get the call in the first place so good for him.
