By all accounts, the Yankees will continue to treat the $210MM luxury tax line as a soft cap, per the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. That gives GM Brian Cashman just about $4MM of accessible payroll space. As Rosenthal notes, those limited financial resources could account for a perceived “lack of urgency” from the front office. The Yanks are now 2-8 in their last ten and just two games over the .500 mark. Of course, even if the Yankees were ready to spend, there aren’t necessarily pieces out there to buy. The market tends to move as one, and it’s tough to get much traction until selling teams feel they have heard from a large enough swath of potential buyers. In early June, there simply aren’t enough buyers at the auction.
But that doesn’t have to stop us from looking at the potential options. For example…
- Adam Frazier is generating trade interest, per Robert Murray of FanSided. The Pirates’ second baseman is one of the surest bets to find a new squad this trade season, as the 29-year-old is one of few veterans on a last-place Pirates team that’s one of the game’s few sure-thing sellers. He’s affordable, making just $4.3MM this season, and with one more year of team control, it’s the optimal time for GM Ben Cherington to net a high-impact return. While his .332/.394/.472 line hardly seems sustainable – nor does a .368 BABIP – he’s a versatile veteran with enough team control to convince potential buyers of his short-and-long-term value. The Yankees are a team that would seem like a particular fit for Frazier, though Murray writes that New York isn’t “among the teams to express early interest.”
- Reds’ rookie second baseman Jonathan India made a change at the plate recently that’s paying off. He has settled down his mechanics in the batter’s box, ditching a high leg kick and utilizing instead a toe tap as his loading action, per Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The early returns are encouraging: India torched the Cardinals this weekend, going 7-for-18 with two home runs, two doubles and four walks to just one strikeout. That output upped his overall line this year to a solid .261/.368/.423, 18 percent better than average with the bat.
Joel Peterson
India is going to be a very very good player. He reminds me a ton of Rendon he has that kind of swagger and skill.
RunDMC
Good comp. He’s becoming the player many thought Senzel would become (though there’s still time if he can stay on the field).
Joel Peterson
Senzel has gotten a bad rap because the team keeps putting him in positions he doesn’t belong. Thankfully they didn’t try putting India in centerfield…..
astick
I disagree. They are elite athletes. Position switches is a poor argument for flat out not performing. Just my respectful opinion.
Joel Peterson
It is absolutely a reason for not performing. I saw Senzel run dead into a wall in the outfield. Why? Because he’s not an outfielder and he hasn’t been the same since. It’s irresponsible what the team has done to Senzel and at this point I don’t think he will ever be the guy he could have been. It’s not his fault it’s really not. If there were Reds fans around we could hear what they think on this.
joeshmoe11
Yeah no he’s been disappointing. He’s been fine in the field but just pretty mediocre at bat. Tons of players are moved all over the field, it’s the way the game is going with position versatility. Career negative WAR.
Joel Peterson
Fangraphs has him at .5 WAR for his career. And he has neutral defensive value which for a guy who plays 3b is terrible. He’s only played about 1 full seasons worth since he came up so it’s not a small sample size. And like I am trying to explain he’s already hurt. So now I think he’s screwed but he got hurt playing out of position.
astick
I am a Reds’ fan, homie.
Joel Peterson
Tell me about the game where he got hurt playing center. I don’t get the impression you watched it.
I know the history on this player. Anyone who says the Reds put him in a position to succeed is full of it.
RedLegJason
Reds fan here, unfortunately. I think Senzel seems to be just naturally injury prone, and maybe it wouldn’t matter where he plays. His latest injury started when he was playing 3B. However, the fact that he has shown to be injury-prone and Bell/management still put him in probably the most physically demanding position on the field where he’s running into walls and diving full speed into the ground, I think that’s being incredibly irresponsible with one of your top young players. So yeah, I think Reds management does take a lot of blame with him.
earmbrister
Yes, Senzel certainly has the ability to play CF. Kriss Byant plays 5 different positions for the Cubs without getting habitually hurt. Hoping Senzel grows out of this injury phase. I believe he was healthy until he turned pro.
Joel Peterson
Just because Bryant plays center for the Cubs, which BTW is a bad idea, doesn’t mean Senzel should. That’s silly logic.
He was healthy until he started playing multiple positions. That’s what changed. That’s what caused the injuries.
thssks
Outfielders run into walls too (except Bo Jackson). It’s what happens when you play outfield the way the baseball gods intended. Senzels “freak” injuries started before he moved to the outfield when he was in AAA. Most of his injuries have been on the base paths or the batters box. The reds organization can not be completely absolved nor blamed entirely because it’s baseball and injuries happen.
diehardfantd
I also disagree. Senzel seems to be one of those players that gets injured doing things most players play through. You need toy watch more Reds baseball so you understand more about your OPINION on Senzel
leftyr32
He was hurt in minors plus vertigo. All before position switch.
astick
Dude, are you Nick Senzel?
earmbrister
Nonsense. Teams move even top prospects that are blocked at their position. The Cards just moved their #2 prospect for that very reason.
The injuries are unrelated. Funny, I don’t remember avoiding playing certain positions due to injury risk. Other than catcher and pitcher, it’s all comparable.
BrandonGregory74
Senzel’s body isn’t made to cover that much ground. With the all the signings they made in the OF the last 3 years why they keep plugging Senzel in CF is beyond me. India and Naquin have been pleasant surprises but you can still get Senzel all the at bats he needs as a utility infielder and we know Bell loves the double switch.
BrandonGregory74
I was there. It was last year the day before the All Star break against the Indians. He hit the wall and crumpled like a ton of bricks. He tried to stay in the game if memory serves but he got pulled at the half inning.
BrandonGregory74
Kris Bryant also dwarves Nick Senzel and none of the positions Bryant plays are CF.
earmbrister
Nick Senzel is not small at 6-1 and 205 pounds. And is that how it works? 6-5 230 pound guys don’t get hurt?
As for Kris Bryant’s 5 positions this year, CF is indeed one of them. Bryant has spent most of his time in the OF, with 18% of his innings in CF. And are there no walls in LF and RF? Heck, in the corner OF spots there are TWO walls to contend with.
FromTheCheapSeats
No he wasn’t. The injuries started down on the farm before anybody ever considered moving him to centerfield.
And, frankly, the reason he’s been moved all over the place is because he hasn’t been productive enough to push anybody out of the lineup.
If the Reds were simply going to give him a job a couple years ago, it should have been second base. I never understood why they didn’t get that. But then we’re talking about the same team that took until 2021 to finally move Suarez back to short – where he should have been four or five years ago.
bot
He also moved into the leadoff spot this weekend. That’s the perfect place for him this season as he has very good plate discipline. Hitting in front of winker and castellanos might bolster him into ROY convo
DocBB
He does the little things that wins games too. Plus defender and plus speed. Works the count and takes free passes and is not shy to take the HBP.
As for Senzel…the guy is toast. Best thing is to trade him for a reliever and give him a chance somewhere else.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
India = Chris Sabo 2.0 not bad at all.
Rsox
Blast from the past right there. Chris Sabo with the flattop and the goggles. I don’t know if the Orioles moving him to the OF in ’94 or the White Sox only having him DH in ’95 but Sabo fell off a cliff offensively after leaving the Reds following the ’93 season
FromTheCheapSeats
He got old fast. If memory serves, though, he was 26 when he came up. Late bloomer.
dobsonel
Move Sanchez’s contract by any means necessary this week and they can about double that payroll space.
Dogbone
Yup, I’m sure teams are fighting to get a place in line, to get a shot at trading for Sanchez and his salary.
Ancient Pistol
This is the problem when fans post their frustrations. They forget that you need another party to agree to a trade. And even if you want to dump someone you will have to eat much of that salary anyway. Your best bet is to either stick it out and hope a player returns to their career average or their best year(s) or you have to cut them to clear space for a promising minor leaguer and eat the entire salary.
By the way (not that this matters to anyone), as a Yankees fan I hope the team finally falls below .500 for the year and does not make the playoffs. The organization needs to fire Cashman and Boone. Cashman put this team together and Boone can’t run it. Time to shake it up (I prefer they do this today).
dobsonel
This is not true at all. Players salaries have been unloaded in the recent past i.e. Ottavino’s $9 mil to the then cost cutting Red Sox. For the record, I thought back in November the Yanks should have non tendered Sanchez for this exact reason. That $6 mil + was better spent elsewhere.
lamars
That was a unique and rare situation, the Red Sox were trying to fix a horrendous bullpen with a veteran pitcher and the Yankees needed to get under the luxury tax. And so far Ottavino has been an excellent pickup by Bloom, a guy who has swing and miss stuff and preformed well in the division. Now take Sanchez, what team needs or is willing to take on a catchers salary that is hitting .198 and is questionable defensively and maybe questionable with his game calling?
stymeedone
Sanchez has the defensive ability of a cinder block. I find calling his defense questionable to be generous.
seamaholic 2
He’d be a decent salary exchange for a guy who costs more than the Yankees can “afford”. Sure, they’d have to add some talent into a deal to entice another team to take Sanchez on, but as a DH candidate (which the NL will have next year) who can play C in an emergency, he’s not a terrible addition. He’s somehow league average this year, thanks to a solid walk rate. And he only has one more year of control at a reasonable price, and can of course be nontendered too.
If you attach him to a strong prospect package, I bet the Rockies would consider it for Story. He’d probably hit well at Coors and the Rox have essentially no long term payroll to worry about.
lamars
Ask yourself this question, the Rockies already have two starting caliber catchers. Why would they trade Story for Sanchez when they could get a much better return elsewhere?
Rsox
Elias Diaz mostly can’t hit his way out of a paper bag but he’s superior to Sanchez defensively. The Rockies aren’t going to add money trading Story, they are going to want prospects and probably at least two or three to move him
dobsonel
Nobody thought Cashman would be able to unload almost the entire Ottavino contract yet he did to his division rivals. Yes absolutely someone would need to be attached to make this happen but it most definitely can happen and does all the time.
jdgoat
I disagree with that. Ottavino had a good season last year, his stats were skewed by getting blown up in a couple of games last year. He just didn’t have the large enough sample size which would have diluted those bad appearances. He had the track record and was more than likely always going to bounce back. Sanchez has been mediocre at best for almost the majority of his career now.
dobsonel
Sanchez sucks. We are on the same page there. Ottavino faded off in the playoffs in 2019 and was largely non existent in 2020 (although the Yanks did seem to underutilize him that season). However $9 mil for a rebuilding team who just went out of their way to shave off Benentedi’s salary was quite a shock to most everyone.
User 4245925809
Agree Goat. Ottavino has had a pretty solid career overall and was just sub par for short spurts in the shortened season. NY wanted to get under the cap and Boston was a taker for most of his 9m salary, needing setup BP help and he’s been solid again so far.
Sanchez has been sub par behind the plate always, except for his arm and the bat lacking for years. Cashman may find it difficult moving that salary without adding kids to the deal and believe myself there will be a new catcher in the bronx in 2022.
lamars
It was a smart move on Bloom’s part knowing the Yankees were trying to get under the luxury tax. And the Red Sox were desperate for a right hand veteran with experience against righties and lefties. For $8 million the Sox got a guy who had been successful in division and was pretty good last year except for one game against the Blue Jays.
bigdaddyk
Well I am sure the Pirates would be willing to eat that contract for the right prospects.
lamars
Pirates have Stallings so have no need for Sanchez.
StudWinfield
Sanchez will be non tendered which means he only has trade value if the Yanks pick up salary. That would negate any advantage to dealing him. Face it it’s Higgy and Sanchez for 2021.
bronxbombers
Yankees suck
TJECK109
Frazier may not sustain his current average but he still hovers around .280 each season except last. That and his versatility and contract should cause plenty of interest and a nice return
pittsburghbob69
And was a gold glove finalist at 2B the last 2 seasons. And plays some OF.
Frazier/Wong/Hoerner were finalist last year, and Frazier/Wong/Albies in ‘19.
Wong won 2 years in a row. Frazier should have won last year.
He would be a finalist again this year if he was on the Pirates for the full season.
No way the Pirates take on G.Sanchez, C.Frazier, or M.Andujar from the Yankees.
I wouldn’t mind E.Florial though. And Him and T.Swaggerty at CF next season.
Robertowannabe
You would be correct that thenBucs would have no interest in Sanchez, C Frazier, or Anduhar. Cherington has centered all of his trades on high upside young prospects. These three would. be no use to a team in a ground up rebuild.
szielinski
If Cherringon follows the path he has taken so far. He should ask for two of these three prospects:
Alexander Vargas ss
Kevin Alcantara OF
Antonio Gomez C
They are young, are rated at 50 FV and fit into the rebuilding strategy the Pirates revealed over the last two off-seasons. If the Pirates take back costly dead weight, like Sanchez, Frazier, etc., that would increase the cost in prospects the Yankees would need to pay.
It all depends on Cashman, whether he believes the Yankees can win in 2021.
Stumpytaco
No way the Yankees give up 2/3 of those for Frazier. And I doubt Alcantara would be available for anything the Pirates have available. He’s the Yanks highest celling prospect not named Jasson.
Pirates also have zero use to pay Sanchez $7+ million next season which he will win in his arb hearing. Stallings might fetch $2m.
It’s like in 2019 when Pirate fans thought they would be getting Gavin Lux or K. Ruiz from the dodgers for the Nightmare.
szielinski
Heh, you say with certainty they won’t make that trade when the Pirates already concluded a lopsided trade with the Yankees for a pitcher returning from his second TJ surgery.
While you’re feeling certain about what Cashman will or will not do, I’ll drink champaign in celebration of the fact that the Yankees spent over $200m for a .500 record!
Mendoza Line 215
Stumpy- They may not, just like Cashman not willing to send Andujar and Frazier to the Pirates in 2017 for Cole.
Look how that one turned out.
And Nightmare May have won a WS for LA in 2019 if it wasn’t for his illegal activity. The Pirates wanted Ruiz who is extra now with Smith playing..
Bottom line is to get someone who is a very good ML player you have to give up good young players since many do not work out.
Cashman will make the trade this time as his job may very well be on the line.
szielinski
Cashman likely is safe. But it’s been a while since the Yankees won a WS, which is the o lyrics winning that counts in the Bronx. So, who among us knows what the Steinbrenner spawn will do.
whyhayzee
“18 percent better than average with the bat“
Since not all 18 percents are created equal, could we maybe move to how many standard deviations above the mean?
WideWorldofSports
yankees are a disaster and an embarrassment to themselves.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Phat Sancho is one of the few guys (Judge, Stanton, Urshela being the others) on the Yanks that is hitting. Had a good game last night. I know he’s a popular fella to blame, but Gary isn’t the reason we are not scoring near enough.
Figure out CF, LF, & maybe even 1B well before addressing catcher. Now that Judge is lining up in center we’re getting some offense there. But the corners are weak. Perhaps Miggy will get hot.
DJ has been the biggest letdown on this squad.
OPS well under .700 & no big knocks. Gleyber crawling towards league average, but he’s been another pretty big disappointment.
Get around to upgrading Sanchez (& I still ask who that would be. Higgy? Not sure I buy that.) after fixing a few other things first.
Ancient Pistol
I think this is all true for the most part. If you look at the team stats in certain areas they are not that far off from the Rays, for instance. Though the offense is weak by traditional standards, their biggest issue to me is they don’t get hits when they need it most. Look at last night, They are up 3-0 with runners on second and third with one out and fail to bring in two more. Those two runs could have made a big difference, Too many times they leave runners on base.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Quite simply, I feel we just need to get a number of above average bats into the lineup somehow.
Losing Hicks hurt as it unsettled the entire OF mix & made us overly reliant on Gardy. Who may finally be done. & at least Hicks gets on base.
& without Voit – a continuing problem – we have gotten virtually nothing out of first.
But injuries happen, especially in 2021.
I’m much more concerned with how & why Torres & Frazier have not only *not* improved, but they both look much worse. I thought these would become core players of some type.
Every time one of those two have a good game – or even an entire series – & I think they are ready to come around: they disappear for a week.
Maddening.
More than any other GM in MLB, Cash embraced the TTO Devil. @Yankee Clipper posted last winter about how the Yanks could be severely impacted by a change to the ball.
A better theory I have not.
To compound matters, this is a tough style of baseball to watch even in good times. When they are scuffling? Mercy. It’s some terrible stuff.
This club is borderline (at least) unwatchable. Can’t say I’m with you wanting to see a losing season &/or missing the playoffs.
But I understand the sentiment.
I’m getting through it by tying flies during the games. Added some real nice salmon streamers during the red sox series.
So that’s where I’m at with this club.
JoeBrady
Losing Voit & Hicks is killing you. The NYY never had a backup plan to replace them, particularly Voit. You can move DJ to 1st, but that cheapens his offensive output, and you then don’t really have anyone to play 2nd.
One could argue that Garner was a reasonable backup for CF, but the Yankees couldn’t afford an injury to any of their infielders.
Joe says...
Ducky.. I think LF is less of a problem than other areas. Andujar is looking more and more comfortable in left. His bat is starting to wake up as well. CF and SS are the biggest areas of concern to me. 1B will sort itself out. Gotta give Gittens a chance and Voit will be back before too long. They need to make a move for Marte (either one) and trade Torres or DJ in order to settle the middle infield. Then make a move for a real SS. Not necessarily Story as they need a lefty in the lineup.
Oh yeah, and fire Boone.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I want to believe in Miggy, too.
But – at the moment – he has an OPS of .588.
Just like I want to believe that 1B will work out. Be nice to see some tangible proof though.
When I look at our lineup every night, I see far too much of that. Too many bats in the lineup below .700, & indeed under .600.
That is untenable.
The one thing I thought we would do (score a lot of runs) we have not.
The starting staff has more then held up to this point. & the ‘pen – though overworked & down a few important pieces – has kept us in most games. & won more than their share.
We just are not scoring runs like this group has in the past. Leads to a .500 ballclub.
Joe says...
With Miggy I’ll admit it’s more of an eye test. It looks like hes putting together better at bats even if the results aren’t there yet.
I also think, and this goes more to my thoughts on Boone, they have to settle on a lineup. Bouncing guys up and down the order isn’t helping. And I don’t care if his body breaks in half, Stanton is a rhythm hitter and needs to be in the lineup every day. No need to keep babying him. Either he’s healthy and let him play or IL him.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Hey, at least Miggy is attacking the ball.
We’re not getting the home runs which is a big difference. The last full season, these same guys hit 308.
But it looks to me like we’ve gone from being selective to borderline passive.
DJ has not been a factor out of the leadoff spot & I do wonder about the trickle down effect of that.
Just too many crummy bats in the lineup, man.
Perhaps a change at hitting coach is in order. I saw a few posts about that recently. But if we keep running lineups out there with only 3 or 4 above average hitters, that may just be too much for our pitching to overcome.
Oh. Yeah. Fire Boone.
stymeedone
Both leagues are down in offense. Perhaps you need to change your definition of what an above average hitter is.
Ducky Buckin Fent
League average OPS has been down.
It is .708.
Yanks currently have four hitters above .700.
Meaning, more of than half of our lineup is producing at a slight to well below average rate. This only becomes more pronounced with the Yanks damnable rest policies. We will oftentimes be down to 3 or even 2 capable hitters on a given night.
I already scaled it back for ’21.
Doesn’t “help”.
joew
A. Frazier won’t pull in a huge amount but…
hes had near or above 100 wRC+ offense most of his career. If you want him, you want him at second that can happen to play around the infield or OF if needed. reason is that he has been a gold glove candidate the past couple years at second.
A MLB Pipeline 50 rating prospect and a higher ceiling lower floor prospect (possible mlb everyday possible MiLB depth) and a fringy mlb depth ceiling or cash/Int Bonus. Preferable “near term” catching prospect as the headline. Maybe a bit high for some, but if there is a ‘bidding’ war… should be doable more so when you consider the higher quality prospects across the board this year.
pittsburghbob69
I wouldn’t mind seeing E.Florial(and probably a pitching prospect too). Florial and T.Swaggerty can compete for the starting CF spot next season.
Rsox
You’re not getting Florial for Frazier. It’s the Yankees, you will either get a pair of lotto tickets or be expected to gift Frazier by paying his salary and accepting a Player to be named later
Mendoza Line 215
Rumor has it that Cashman turned down trading Andujar and Frazier for two years of Cole.Hopefully BC is smart enough to make sure that he gets quality players in return for A Frazier. He is in love with low minors prospects but needs to start thinking to get almost ML ready players. If he cannot, keep Frazier for the off season and trade him then.
He is a good major league player and has control left.
If Cashman does not want to do it,find someone else or keep him.A Frazier is one of the five starters who are at least reasonably good hitters. The Pirates need to get out of this two year long constant losing cycl.e
szielinski
The Pirates will face serious 40-man roster & Rule-5 problems this off season. Cherrington will not trade for near-to the Majors prospects. Those players will worsen his roster problems and will have lower ceilings because they are close to the Majors. The Piratex will be a bad team next year. Trading assets to improve in 2022 is the fool’s errand that had Glasnow, Meadows and Baz going to Tampa Bay.
Mendoza Line 215
I am saying not to give Frazier away and to not continue to get A and AA players in total for him.
These players have a low chance of ever getting to the MLB.
Not every team who has a plan like this makes it back to respectability, let alone competition.
You have a good point about roster overload.Instead of getting three or four players for him get one or two who can help you in the near future.
Roster overload is a good thing to have.
joew
to be fair…. Glasnow and Meadows where doing crap in the Pittsburgh. system
looking more to 2023, going into the break the team will have a better idea if 2022 is a semi-realistic option. IMO much of that depends on those like Keller Newman and Tucker in particular.
If they don’t get better look to 23 when current prospects have a bit of time in.
joew
Hes better than a couple ‘lotto tickets’ your looking at one of a quality (but not top 10) prospects and a reasonably possible rotation pitcher. (per pipeline)
One of the abundance of catching prospect and a decent pitching prospect is a fair headline… more if the pirates are paying the remaining 2021 salary… something like a p2bnl or int bonus money
Mendoza Line 215
Joew-You pretty much always make sense to me.
I was not totally against the TB trade although I think Baz was basically stolen.Meadows was hurt a fair amount and Glasgow was in a do loop. The problem was each had a fairly high ceiling and seem to be closer to attaining it now.
Who knew Archer was going to be so bad and hurt, although it did not auger well that NH main selling point on him was years of control.
Ask the Phillies how that point worked out with Kingery.
Tucker is not being given a chance but he cannot even hit in AAA.
I always thought Newman was good but 2019 seems to be an outlier for many hitters.
Who knows what they have in Keller as they cannot blame Uncle Ray anymore and he is very good one game and very bad the next.
My point is that they need to start getting better as they have basically been the worst team for two years now.
joew
Keller has been getting slightly better this season.. still wildly inconsistent from batter to batter but slowly getting better. I would be surprised at the end of the season he is a sub 5 era reasonable option for a mid-rotation type guy.. assuming health.
of course i wouldn’t be surprised if it goes the other way.
If they would only sign AJ Burnett as an Asst Pitching coach and Russel Martin as a player coach… .. .. probably wouldn’t turn things around but would be great to see them in the black and gold again 🙂
Mendoza Line 215
Joew-Burnett brought instant credibility to a moribund team but I think that he loves his family and his farm too much to come back as a coach.Pirates haters do not realize that they offered Martin a four year contract for the same annual amount as Toronto. He suffered the inevitable decline to a wasted contract from a fine player so in essence they paid for five years for three years of good production,
They were both popular players with Pittsburgh.
joew
Yeah Mendoza, Even with his offensive decline his defense was still well above par. IMO he is what made the pitching staff so good during his time here. Best catcher we’ve had since Kendall.
Really though i probably would’ve went four years with a Mutual option that would’ve guaranteed similar money.
Mendoza Line 215
But we both know that he was going to go back home anyways. My point was that the Pirates were willing to pay for him.
He was a fine player who brought a lot of things to a team.He was a fine clutch hitter.I was surprised when he was first signed for I think $10 M per year but NH knew what he was doing,I do not know that they had to beat anybody out,but Rod Barajas had seen his better days.
Another great trade NH made was the Cervelli deal. And Stallings does a good job now.I sweat it when they demoted him a few years ago but no one picked him up.
Russell Martin was not to be replaced though.
joew
That probably wouldn’t happen. Pirates need catchers in the system. the Yankee’s do have plenty of those and more pitching is always not bad.
Wells probably won’t happen.. that’s understandable and just fine.
Gomez would be a good target add on Waldichuk would make a fair headline for A. Frazier.
have the Pirates pay the rest of the 2021 salary and Yankees drop in Int Bonus money or another 40/45 far out risky type prospect.
To help the yankees stay under luxury tax threshold.
tim815
But, my team’s owner is the only one who gives his executives a spending limit.
bapthemailman
Hate to see Frazier go. The Pirates have a pretty good top of the order with Frazier leading off. Hopefully the Pirates can get a good prospect for him.
hoof hearted
“high impact return”, for Fraizer?
What kind of return did teams get for Betts and Lindor?
pantherfan73
The low salary also adds value.
lamars
For Betts, Verdugo who has already helped with the sting of losing Betts. And you add in Downs and Wong and it’s not bad haul for a guy who wasn’t going to resign with the team. Downs has the potential to be the Red Sox everyday 2nd base in 2022 or 2023, or at least play utility.

YankeesBleacherCreature
Stay tuned for what? That Judge and Stanton are anchoring the team’s ability to compete? And Puig is the solution to the team’s struggles bc he’s succeeding in the *Mexican* league? Do you even know the level of competition down there?

Sorry my friend but ,I just tell you that Puig is in Mexico and he has not forgotten to play baseball. I don’t know what statistics you look at but these three players are the same age and to give you a data only in play off, the sum of both in AVE does not it reaches Puig’s average of 280, let alone RBI, etc. They(Staton and Judge) have been sold a glass player and a cardboard player for more than 7 years that do not work, therefore, any player improves the situation in this team

MLB is in time to rectify losing a spectacular player

There was a good article in the NY Post suggesting that the NYY trade Deivi Garcia for Starling Marte. His contract is a bit backloaded, so the AAV is relatively small. The Marlins can kick that amount into the pot, and drop the portion of the contract not related to AAV.
They’d drop a relatively large portion of the expenditures (relative to their overall payroll) and pick up a decent prospect. If I were the NYY, I’d make the same type of offer for Gallo.

I could be wrong, but I think it would take more than Garcia to get Gallo.

Gallo is only signed through this year. I think you have it backwards.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I stand corrected. He’s arb eligible for next season.

The reds have tried to get Senzel’s bat in the lineup. Actually when they signed moustakis, senzel was out of a position. Should have packaged him ,Aquino for a ss. Garcia not ready

Yankees just aren’t that good

Senzel and India can be cogs in the BRM just like Winker has become, who was drafted well before them. Winker took awhile and went through a lot of injuries without being shuffled between positions. Senzel and India need to play their natural IF positions. Period. Enough with the silliness. Play one at 3B and one at 2B and let them cover for each other if out. It’s getting time to move Suarez and get some help in the pen. The org also encouraged Senzel to try Aquino’s stance at the plate for a time, which was ridiculous and set him back. Quit messing with the guy and let him become the best player he can be. Same with India – don’t mess with him. They left Winker alone, gave him time, and it all worked out well.

Where are the people in the offeseason who had clamored that the Yankees should empty the arsenal for Reds’ Luis Castillo???
Ducky Buckin Fent
Oh, I was certainly one of them.
I made peace with the fact that I’m a super crappy GM a long time ago. Dominguez + for Castillo probably doesn’t even crack my top 5 of poor roster ideas, serious.
Plus, that was a more innocent time back when we all thought pitching was going to be our problem.

Always preferred the top tap hitting technique. I’m kind of surprised more players aren’t going to it, especially with the pitchers providing the power. Too many guys trying to leave the stadium instead of hit line drives. Line drives produce backspin and carry. Uppercuts provide a lot of top spin – IF contact is even made.

“Toe tap” not top hat…sigh

Is it just me, or are balls seemingly carrying a LOT better in the Midwest states this year? My goodness, the entire state of Ohio suddenly looks like Coors!

If true, Cashman needs to resign!
