Latest On Jose Berrios

By Tim Dierkes | July 26, 2021 at 11:47am CDT

The Twins are discussing Jose Berrios with multiple teams including the Padres and Dodgers, tweets Jon Morosi of MLB Network.  According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the Mets are not one of those other clubs at this time.

Berrios, 27, figures to be wildly popular on the trade market since he’s under team control for 2022 as an arbitration eligible player.  He ranks ninth in MLB with 121 2/3 innings, sporting a 3.48 ERA, 25.7 K%, and 6.5 BB%.  Berrios appears to have little interest in giving the Twins a discount on an extension, so naturally the team is listening to potential trade offers.  Dan Hayes of The Athletic wrote this month, “Early indications are the Twins asked another team that inquired about Berríos for a pre-arb player and two top-100 prospects.”  Speaking of top 100 prospects, Baseball America just updated their list.

In an earlier tweet, Morosi suggested the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, Dodgers, Padres, Astros, and Phillies “are active in the starting pitching market now.”  But it’s difficult to name any contender that couldn’t push aside their worst starting pitcher for Berrios.

I don’t know why everyone is assuming the Cubs are going to trade all of their good players. It makes no sense. In fact, I am willing to wager they will not trade anyone of significance. And before you ask, no, Joc Pederson was not a significant trade. He was on a one year deal and hitting below average and his trade value is apparently a fringe prospect.

The Cubs trade Joc for a fringe prospect who might not even make the majors and casual baseball fans are SCREECHING. RIZZO TRADE, BRYANT TRADE, Bryce Ball means Rizzo will be traded, CONTRERAS TRADE.

I will believe all of the speculation when I see it

Cubs will trade Kimbrel and Bryant. They’d be silly not to. Davies probably gets dealt in the next day or two, the other two will get dealt Thursday or Friday. No, I am not saying Davies is significant.

So you believe the better solution is to keep Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez and risk losing them for nothing when they become free agents after this year, rather than trading them for some decent prospects that might help them compete later?

Yes, I think the better solution is to keep good players and try to compete this year, next year, and the next year. Instead of giving up and saying “welp, guess we will lose for a few years and not even try” That’s the thinking that caused them 108 years without a world series. I don’t want to wait until 2124 for the next world series.

No, your thinking is what caused 108 years of not winning. Being realistic and blowing it up is what led to them being good for a 5ish year window and actually winning a WS. Your handle is perfect though, makes me wonder if you’re trolling people or serious, so well done.

Not moving expiring assets who are unlikely to resign with your team in a sellers trade market where their value is enhanced is more in line with “That’s the thinking that caused them 108 years without a world series”

The cubs have around 70 mil on the books for next season (including arb raises). They can move some of these players who they do not control long term, get future assets to strengthen a fast rising farm with a ton of quality depth in the lower minors, and then use their financial might to take advantage of what is shaping up to be one of the deepest FA classes ever.

Holding onto all “core” players when some of them aren’t near as productive as they’ve been in the past, while they also want more money than their worth isn’t a viable team building strategy.

Sure, trading away all of your good players is a strategy. But this so called “tanking” isn’t a good strategy. You basically give up half the time. You could try to compete all of the time and have a 50% chance of making the playoffs. Or you could tank, have a 0% chance at playoffs because you have already given up on the season, to increase your odds to maybe 75% chance of playoffs in the non-tanking years. Some quick math will show 75%/2 = 37..5% chance of making playoffs on average. Lower than the average if you compete every year. So this proves I am right. Tanking is playing the lottery, you get lucky once in a while, but ask the Orioles how tanking since 2012 is going for them?

It’s not about tanking, it’s about getting something for guys on expiring contracts.

You seem to ignore the fact that the Cubs are going to lose all these guys at the end of the season, They will get a comp pick if a QO is offered, and rejected, but the Cubs have to determine if what they can get in trade exceeds the value of the comp picks.

It’s bad strategy to just say no to trading guys, especially when you know that you probably won’t be able to re-sign most of them. If there is competition among teams for a guy like Bryant, the return in trade probably exceeds the comp pick.

          Dear Influencer (whatever that is),

The Os haven’t been tanking since 2012. they had a 4 or 5 year run where they did quite well, ascending to the post season 3 of those years.

However, to your point, the previous 14 seasons were a function of incompetence, not tanking. The tanking began in 2018 and has resulted in a top 10 farm system – this is what small and mid-market teams do to compete with LA, NY and Chicago payrolls.

Hot takes may work on TikTok but frequently reveal more about one’s lack of knowledge that anything else.

yes a lot of people think it is a sure thing.. when there are no sure things in baseball.. the winners tend to be the rich clubs.. who can fill voids by assuming large contracts.. and the next are clubs that gamble rather than waiting for the sure thing..

Lol making up numbers and percentages to “prove” something right

Meanwhile, in the land of reality, the Cubs are not likely to make the playoffs. Would take a lot of work to grab the second wildcard, and most don’t see that happening. They will be losing some of their players in the off-season. Getting something for them before the deadline is better than compensatory picks.

You can’t try to win next year with players who aren’t going to be on the team. Extend them or trade them, they’re already not winning this year. Unless you think they have a hot streak in them and will get in the playoffs this year, which is possible I guess.

This team is the whiff kings if baseball. Baez is not a good hitter. Bryant is always hurt. Rizzo is a gift but he’s getting older and most likely doesn’t want to start all over again.

The only “good” hitter the Cubs have is Contreras.

They may NOT get traded, but if they cannot agree on an extension, they will be shopped. The one thing about what you said that may be true is that I don’t see a lot of contending teams needing a player at 1B or 2B enough to give up with the Cubs would be asking for in these ‘rentals.’ However, Bryant is valuable because he is hot and can play multiple positions. Kimbrel is also someone that will be sought out, as well as any 1YR contracted RP’s. With that said, I see Baez and Rizzo staying put, and either trying to work out extensions later or receiving a QO down the line.

He’s worth way more than Scherzer. Max is 37 (tomorrow actually, happy birthday) and is a free agent in two months. Berrios is 27, has another year of control, and makes relative peanuts.

Berrios is a lot more than a mid rotation guy. He’s not an ace but he’s a strong no. 2 and currently having his best season. Berrios in a potential trade would become the Giants no.2, the Padres no.2, or the Dodgers no.3, assuming Kershaw is healthy. With that said Berrios could definitely tip the scales in the favor of any of those teams

I know this is out of the box but the Rangers should consider a trade for Berrios and an extension. This would fit with their timeline for the rebuild. Leiter/Berrios/Dunning would be good for years to come. First things first…resign Gallo then get a short stop in the offseason.

Berrios is definitely a guy that can eat innings and help keep you afloat to get to the playoffs. IMO, he’s a game 3 or game 4 starter in the Dodger playoff rotation behind Buehler, Kershaw, and maybe Urias.

I would be surprised if the Dodgers included Ruiz in a deal for him.

If giving up Ruiz is the difference between the getting Berrios or letting a division rival get him, the Dodgers would be foolish to not make the trade. Ruiz has the potential to be a star but the Dodgers already have Will Smith who’s probably a top 5 catcher. Putting Berrios in the Dodgers rotation and getting the lineup back to 100% will make them very tough to beat in October. I say that as someone who doesn’t even like the Dodgers

This is the exact opposite reason the dodgers have won 8 straight division titles and 3 pennants in the last decade.

You don’t trade valuable assets unless you’re getting top dollar. Any pitching rental, or Berrios, will not get Ruiz++. Gray is probably the prospect most likely moved for a rental

Ruiz goes for someone like Hendricks. TOR arm with a lot of control. That’s about it

Q: How do you assess your rotation depth, and how will that perhaps impact the possible search for a starter, especially with several pitchers approaching career highs in innings pitched?

A: “We have a lot of quality pitching — a lot of quality starting pitching. It’s an area we’re going to continue to assess, just given the unique nature of the season, going from 60 games to 162. It’s something none of us have ever been through before. It’s a constant conversation with our pitching coaches, our strength and conditioning guys, our trainers. We need to make sure these guys are healthy for hopefully more than 162, and that’s really where the conversation has to be right now.”

Q: Is pitching your foremost priority?

A: “As always, we’ll listen on anything and ask on anything. There are areas of the roster that are easier to upgrade than others. Our offense has certainly been very, very good this year, and I think our starting pitching’s been very, very good. Ryan Pressly’s been outstanding. We still think we have a lot of talent out there in the bullpen, but it’s our responsibility to make sure that we seek every opportunity to upgrade this roster, and there are some areas that are a little easier than others.”

Still don’t get all the starting pitching to Boston rumors.. Example.. Chris Sale’s 3rd (probably last) rehab start yesterday went 65 pitches deep at AA. 9k’s and was at 92-96, same as at his 1st 2.

Houck is fully healthy now and as the NYY can attest in his latest start.. Throwing outstanding. The 2 quality type of reinforcements most teams would dearly love to have to have in the 2nd half of the season? They already have within the organization and the relief guy Brasier (possibly) could follow some time later.

I see pitching as a done deal and even Conner Seabold is finally throwing again after being on the shelf since ST. Acquire anything? Make it a 1b replacement for the hapless Dalbec that many of us thought was a flop from his time in the minors and that he was nothing but another Wil Middlebrooks all along.

Convicted? He hasnt been charged. If his guilt was as slam dunk as many here seem to believe it seems that criminal charges would have been put forth by now. No DA wants a high visibility case unless they are sure they can get the conviction. Since the investigation hasnt prompted any actions I’m leaning to thinking that the DA has serious misgivings about the accuser’s allegations. “Beyond a reasonable doubt” went out the window when she asked for a 2nd date. The “Preponderance of Evidence” that a civil case requires seems much more attainable.

Yeah, except conviction or no, MOST of the events are not disputed, and it is those events that make him an MLB untouchable; though lawsuits will be filed regarding that, there’s not a team in MLB that will touch this guy – the mental imagery is firmly implanted in the public mind. He’s done, at least for the next several years, until culture sinks further and teams have bdsm nights at the park

Regardless of the outcome, Bauer obviously showed a serious dark side and lack of judgment. One thing I would like some clarity about is the why this woman reportedly went back to him a second time, Perhaps that plus the emails she sent allegedly telling Bauer to be very rough with her are giving the DA reason to lengthen the investigation, but that is simply speculation on my part. Even before the report today on this site which said the majority of Dodgers players do not want Bauer back, I questioned whether the organization would take him back even if there weren’t any charges and/or the situation was resolved out of court.

Your post seems contradictory. You acknowledge that there is communication allegedly telling Bauer to be very rough as well as a follow up encounter, yet you say Bauer showed a, “dark side and lack of judgment”.

Now if you mean he showed a lack of judgment because he’s a high profile rich guy that should have got her specific requests in writing, on video, with multiple witnesses to make sure he covered his own ass, sure, I agree. If you mean he has a dark side and lack of judgment because he partook in something the other person allegedly wanted, I’ll disagree.

If it comes out that this wasn’t actually consensual and what she’s saying is true, then I’d also agree with you, but you said no matter the outcome. I know it’s rare in this country, but I still stick to the idea of, “innocent until proven guilty” (granted this isn’t a criminal case). If these were the consensual acts of two adults, what they do in the bedroom is of no concern to me.

Guilt in a legal sense doesn’t matter at all in this case. What matters is if Bauer violated the uniform players contract code of conduct provision. I think MLB has a pretty good case that he did since he admitted to beating and choking the woman during consensual sex. Whether he is convicted in a court of law of anally raping her is pretty much beside the point in terms of whether they can suspend him indefinitely and nullify his contract.

There is a website called baseball trade values that I highly suggest you check out. This trade isn’t even remotely close. That package of Voit, Frazier, Garcia, and Vizcaino wouldn’t get any ONE of those three guys from the Twins, much less all 3.

Baseball trade value assigns an estimated point system to each player for what they’re worth on the trade market. It’s not perfect, by any means. But your proposed trade has over 100 points of value going to the Yankees and less than 25 points going back to the Twins. You’re not even in the ballpark.

@phantomofdb- I strongly disagree with you. Voit alone is definitely worth a Kepler or a Buxton. Frazier can definitely replace Kepler in the outfield. And Deivi, Vizcaino or Gil definitely can help take the hit of losing Berrios. The Yankees are loaded with pitching prospects that could be obtained for Berrios. Aaron Judge would never be offered in this trade. Maybe Oswald Peraza could be added or a Luis Medina but not much more.

You can overvalue your favorite team’s players all you want, but Voit just doesn’t have a fraction of the trade value that kepler or buxton does. And there’s a reason the Yankees fans propose Frazier in literally every single trade, He’s junk.

And I didn’t write that site. Seriously google it. Baseball trade values. I don’t think the Yankees would offer Judge up at all. But if you want a package of Berrios, Buxton, AND Kepler… your offer is literally a quarter on the dollar of trade back to the Twins. You want 3 difference makers all in one trade, you are going to have give up more than your MLB junk and a couple decent prospects. The objective trade value site says that Garcia/Medina/Judge is almost equal value to Berrios/buxton/Kepler. If you don’t think giving up that quantity of talent is worth Berrios/buxton/Kepler, you just won’t get them.

Lol. So you’re mad because you’re grossly misusing the tool? It’s assigning an estimated trade value to each guy. It’s not trying to say that if you can make the math work, whatever you put up there is a realistic trade. You can manipulate the numbers in all sorts of goofy ways, including putting up 3 current players at the same position.
Whoever you chose just doesn’t have great trade value. But that doesn’t mean trading those 3 guys for Berrios would ever remotely happen. It’s just saying that the kind of prospect haul someone like Berrios would get (because of performance, contract, and age) would be similar to what the Padres could get if they traded ALL of those guys.

Paddack COULD have value, but he doesn’t seem to be able to figure it out. And his big thing that made him a good prospect was the spin rate on his fastball. That’s a pretty worrisome thing to hang your hat on at the moment. And Oña – unless the twins are going to move a lot of other pieces they don’t really need another outfielder. They have Buxton, Kepler, Kirilloff, Larnach, Rooker, and a couple backup guys already.
