Being named to the all star game does not really help your trade value. The trading team will owe the player a bonus.. the team that is receiving the player will not have to pay anything extra because the value has already been set. The only thing that increases value is more than one team competing for the player and getting into a bidding war.

All Stars appearances may mean fans favorite = more money in attendance, park advertising, sponsorship, tv and radio ads, etc. Right?

The label of being an All Stat means little for trade value. The popularity and production that got one to All Star Game is what boosts value. That said, some who are All Star snubs still have boosted value due to their popularity and production. However a player who gets All Star nod only cus every team must b represented doesnt have any enhanced value due to get All Star nod.

With that logic does that plummet Trevor Story’s value? Not a single team cares if Bryant or Story made the all star team if they are interested in them.

Wonder who is all going to be part of the final vote. I’m sure that there will be a few replacements as well. Some pitchers probably are going to pitch before the break starts and teams won’t want them to play. Same with maybe a few position players. Plus you never know a short term injury could keep someone out of the game.

NL pitching is so deep, they left Max Scherzer, Taijuan Walker, Marcus Stroman, Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Freddy Peralta, Pablo Lopez, Sandy Alcantra, Kenley Jansen, and Edwin Diaz off the team. That’s almost an entire other NL pitching staff!

Players’ vote also screwed things up, especially in the NL; Betts and Soto are great players, but they’re not having All-Star years. I don’t think Gallo is an All-Star at all; that spot should have gone to either Randy Arozarena or Mitch Haniger.

    And Mike Zunino??? Really?

Muncy, Jansen, Turner, Buehler, Bauer, Taylor, Smith, Kershaw. I’m surprised that Buehler and Jansen didn’t make it. Turner could have also made it.

You do know, of course, that every team must be represented, right? Mike Zunino is regraded as one of the best defensive catchers in the game. plus he has 18 HRs, and a 134 OPS+.

So if you take Zunino off the roster, you have to replace him with another Rays player. Which guy from the pitchers, IFers, or OFers do you remove from the roster to replace with a different Rays guy?

@zoinksscoob Mookie was picked by his peers. By the players not the fans. And the players don’t get it wrong. Mookie is 10th among NL position players in Baseball-Reference WAR. He’s performed like an All-Star even if it’s a down year so far by his standards.

Mookie is a well-liked guy and obviously talented. Not surprised that players voted him in. Still doesn’t deserve to be an all-star if you’re basing it on performance on field. If he’s an all-star there are a lot of all-stars not going to the game.

What happens if Eduardo Escobar gets traded before the ASG? Does someone from the D’backs have to be named as their sole representative, and does Escobar get removed?

Could be similar to what happened with Samardzija when he was traded from Cubs to A’s before the ASG. The outcome of the game still mattered at that time so he wasn’t allowed to play for the AL. I would imagine that Escobar would still be able to play, especially if he’s traded within the NL.

As far as the DBacks getting another All star named…. probably not unless they are added to replace someone else that’s injured. Kettle Marte certainly would be there if he’s healthy but that’s about it. Carson Kelly was also doing well before he was hurt

Berrios isn’t bad, but he’s been inconsistent. In both 2018 and 2019, he went into the break with an ERA hovering right around 3. Then in the second half, he had an ERA above 4.50. Overall, he has a 115 ERA+ since 2016 which is like a high-end 3/low-end 2 starting pitcher.

I’m a rangers fan, and I’m shocked we got 3, esp Gallo. Dude may hit homers, walk and play defense. But I have a hard time wrapping my head around an all-star having that batting avg. And, although, he deserves it, didn’t really expect Gibson. Figured he gets overlooked bc he is a ranger. Garcia is all I expected us to have

See the above post man. Gallo is one of the best RF in baseball this year and there is a pretty good case to be made that he should stary in RF. IKF is a pretty good ballplayer but is barely an average hitter in terms of OBP, way better SS out there in the AL. Kennedy not a chance.

You gotta look at a player in total and not cherry pick stats like batting average. You may acknowledge his other stats but then you clearly ignore them in favor of BA and K rate.

Rays have one of the best records in baseball and the only all-star is a catcher with a sub-.200 batting average? I know Glasnow is injured but it’s a joke he wasn’t named, and in the past plenty of people who were already injured were named and replaced.

Zunino is deserving, but also kind of marginal. Fire Hydrant and Wendle also should have received consideration. A lot of the issue is just the Rays way.

If you are judging Zunino by batting avg, that is yr mistake. HR hitter, great defense.

I love the Rays, honestly cannot think of anyone else who deserves it. Feyereisen? Kittredge? Meadows is up and down…like most guys on the team.

And who cares about the game anyway. Meaningless and politicized.

Record and number of all stars is irrelevant. Unless you have 10 all stars or something. They don’t have a obvious choice and only so many spots. In case of a tie the other player gets the nods. Mlb isn’t too concerned if the 356 rays fans tune in or not.

Have you ever thought that the whole game plan against the nationals is not to let Soto beat you. He has no protection at all and is not being pitched to. Why would you pitch to him. With the catcher, Robles, castro down the line I would just walk him. He is an all star in my mind. Guys that have played a half a year with no track record should not be an all star in my opinion. Do it for an entire year and then we will talk.

Reynolds is 4th in NL outfield wOBA, wRC+, OPS, 3rd in fWAR, OBP, batting average, and 5th in SLG. So while there are 3 OF’s better than him, it’s not like the gap between him and one of the starting OF’s is that large and an argument to start Reynolds over Winker has merrit to it.

The offensive difference between Winker and Reynolds is a .029 OPS, .011 wOBA, and 4% wRC+ difference. Reynolds has a higher fWAR by an admiditly small .5 margin.

Mookie Betts??? When guys having a tough season get elected – like Betts – it makes me wonder what the true meaning of “all-star” should be. Is it who the fans want to see, regardless of stats? Like back in the day when Reggie Jackson would get the nod even after being washed up? Or, should it be the player having the best statistical season at the time of voting? I guess one could make arguments both ways. I say the latter.
