Diamondbacks Release Josh Reddick

By Anthony Franco | August 9, 2021 at 6:15pm CDT

The Diamondbacks announced they’ve released veteran outfielder Josh Reddick. He had been designated for assignment last week.

A release was the anticipated outcome once Arizona bumped Reddick from the 40-man roster. The 34-year-old has more than enough big league service to reject an outright assignment, and the rebuilding Diamondbacks are long past focusing on the 2021 season. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic wrote last week that Reddick’s designation was part of a broader organizational plan to give some more run to younger players as the front office looks for more information about who could comprise their core in future years.

Upon clearing release waivers, Reddick will be free to sign elsewhere. He’ll presumably be looking at minor league offers, as he settled for a minors pact over the offseason before being selected to Arizona’s big league club in late May. He struggled to the worst offensive showing of his career — .258/.285/.371 over 158 plate appearances — in the desert.

Nevertheless, Reddick figures to find decent interest from other clubs willing to offer him a Triple-A opportunity. The left-handed hitter has generally been a productive player over the course of his career, and he posted league average offensive numbers between 2018-20. If Reddick signs elsewhere on or before August 31, he’d be eligible for a new team’s postseason roster.

No, but he did struggle to slug .371 and have an OPS of .656. Both are the worst of his career and the OPS is way below average for a starter. Frankly the Diamondbacks are doing him a favor instead of just benching him.

it might have been a struggle to match his career marks, but not the .258/.371/.656

If he didn’t struggle, why was his OPS 100 points lower than his career numbers?

A .755 OPS vs right handlers paints his season in a little better light, considering that he’s been little more than a platoon hitter for the majority of his career….. Welcome back to Oakland Josh.

@sideburns, you are correct. Oakland makes all the sense in the world for Reddick with their starting RF getting suspended. He can still play good OF defense with a good arm. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing for Oakland by Aug 20th at the latest. The price is certainly right for the stingy A’s.

On a side note, ESPN is working on a documentary on his career called “The Chronicles of Reddick”.

Isn’t totally wrong. Polanco won’t be here after this year, might as well start auditioning replacements to hold down the fort next year until Cruz makes it up (he will probably be an OF). I think our second OF will be Gamel so we’d only have one spot to fill. My early money would be on Alford though.

Josh Reddick Has been on a steady decline for the last three years or so. I agree with some of you to say he would be a good platoon for a non-playoff team. Likely though, it’s time to wrap it up.

Kind of a weird idea, but I wouldn’t hate a Red Sox signing here. Reddick’s not what he used to be, but he’s a stable veteran presence with ties to Boston, and I’d sure rather roster him than Franchy (or Duran, who looks like he needs more work). Stranger resurgences have happened, and there’s basically no risk involved.

I initially thought Oakland would be a decent destination on a minor’s contract and put him in Vegas for a while but I think the A’s are getting more from Seth Brown now then Reddick would give them and i see Brown better defensively at this point in Reddicks career. As a depth signing it would be ok but he is no upgrade over what they currently are putting out on the field
