Giants Sign Tyler Chatwood, Matt Shoemaker To Minors Contracts

By Mark Polishuk | August 7, 2021 at 9:56pm CDT

The Giants have signed right-handers Tyler Chatwood and Matt Shoemaker to minor league contracts.  MLB.com’s official transactions page was the first to report the Chatwood deal, while the Shoemaker news actually came from Evan Longoria, who mentioned Shoemaker had joined the Triple-A team during an interview with Sean Cunningham of KXTV Sacramento.  Both hurlers were released within the last week, with the Blue Jays letting go of Chatwood and the Twins parting ways with Shoemaker.

Chatwood signed a one-year, $3MM free agent deal with Toronto this past offseason, and was initially a tremendous help for an otherwise injury-riddled Jays bullpen.  After allowing just one run in his first 17 innings of work, however, Chatwood was then scorched for 11 runs over his next four outings and 3 1/3 innings.  Another decent stretch followed, but two more rough performances on June 25 and July 1 closed the book on his tenure with the Blue Jays, as a neck strain went Chatwood to the injured list for much of July.

Shoemaker had a similar tale, as a one-year, $2MM free agent contract with Minnesota resulted in an ugly 8.06 ERA over 60 1/3 innings.  His 14.1% strikeout rate was near the bottom of the league and down dramatically from his previous 21.8% career average, while Shoemaker’s 9.5% walk rate was also subpar.  Shoemaker started his first 11 games and a move to the bullpen didn’t help, as he allowed eight runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief work on June 30, in his final appearance as a Twin.

The Giants have recently displayed a knack for reviving veteran pitchers, so it isn’t out of the question that Chatwood or Shoemaker could yet provide some quality work for the team before the 2021 season is out.  Since the Jays and Twins are on the hook for the rest of the two right-handers’ MLB salaries, San Francisco only owes the prorated portion of the Major League minimum salary to Chatwood or Shoemaker if they get called up to the big league roster.

if Farhan thinks he can get value out of these guys like with Gausman, Disco, Wood, Smyly, etc… then i’m all for it. although both of these guys got absolutely ROCKED all year

Nice Zaidi. On the other hand, I know that the Phillies are looking to sign a few pitchers to minor contracts because depth is very important. They are close to reach the luxury taxes, but they are waiting to see who they might add and they are looking for an opportunity. It was a bit disappointing that Cole Hamels didn’t sign with them. However, it’s awesome that they are in first place.

Harris is their GM. Zaidi is just some mathlete. Give the proper person the proper credit.

Chatwood is a bases loaded walk waiting to happen.

Yeah, but with the way things are rolling for the Giants this season, somehow Chatwood would lead the league in bases loaded walks, wins, and complete games.

Just in the minors. Chatwood only played for the Angels in 2011 before he was traded to the Rockies in the offseason. Shoemaker didn’t make his MLB debut until 2013.

Looking for that shiny coin in the couch and not that rotten apple in the dumpster. I wonder how many of these moves are for blocking purposes? In the past, Chatwood had pitched well against the Giants. Shaun Anderson for Eduardo Nunez (Boston), flipped to the Twins for Lamonte Wade who has been clutch as of late.

Considering the Giants have the best record, they are the last to get dibs on these pitchers…

That’s irrelevant. These were not waiver claims. The Giants, like ever other team in MLB, passed on making a claim. Not sure if either one was asked to accept being outrighted, but if they were, they rejected it, and became FAs. Every team in baseball then had a chance to sign them for the prorated league minimum.

Tony Gwynn is alarmingly slow on the draw tonight. Wonder if it has anything to do with being 7.5 games back.

Shoemaker actually was pitching well at St.Paul for the Twins. The Giants have had a magic touch recently with Pitchers who struggled elsewhere so this could turn into a very good under the radar move for them

Who knows if either of these guys ever see the light of day in the bigs with the Giants. Not everything Zaidi touches turns to gold, and that’s part of the churning process. He had stashed both Tyson Ross and Scott Kazmir in the minors, and it didn’t really work out for either guy.

But the minors are a good place for these guys to prove whether or not they have anything left in the tank. And as good as the Giants pitching staff was in the first half, there are a lot of cracks in the armor. Gausman hasn’t had control over his splitter for a couple of outings, Alex Wood has been getting hit, and Aaron Sanchez didn’t make it past the second inning last night.

Sanchez needs to build up arm strength. Don’t think he would’ve went more then 3-4 innings at most either way.

If you can figure out the 2/3 of the time when Chatwood can find home plate and only pitch him then, he is quite good. I always felt like there was a mental side w him because either he is just fine or terrible w his control.

Chatwood just cant make it without the sticky stuff, after the crackdowns he hasn’t been the same. Shoemaker can be electric when he has his stuff on but he has just been awful of late
