Minor MLB Transactions: 8/4/21

By Anthony Franco | August 4, 2021 at 11:00pm CDT

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Yankees announced they’ve returned outfielder Greg Allen to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Because he was selected as a COVID-19 replacement, he can be removed from the active and 40-man rosters without being subject to waivers. Allen played well in fifteen games after being called up on July 16, slashing .270/.417/.432 over 48 plate appearances.

Why demote Allen for Davis? Allen was a spark in 15 games. .270 BA, 5 SB and some key hits. Davis .149 BA. Don’t get it

      What?

You want to reward a prospect for sparking the club and getting on base more than 40% of the time?

How many good offensive switch hitting center fielders with speed do we really need?

There is no room for him because of the Gallo trade.

I agree with BMW1020, Allen played well during his time regardless of his career stats. Don’t understand picking up Davis when he was just as bad in Toronto. Gardy’s ship has sailed. Should’ve kept the sockman even tho he was terrible with SF. Peralta has been dreadful since acquisition. Don’t know what Cash sees in him.

Yankees should never had resigned Gardner. He’s batting below his weight, and has no arm to throw the ball into the infield. Plus, what leadership?

They need to put Gallo in center when Voit comes back and put Stanton in left.

I noticed Allen has a career .307 OBP so maybe they didnt trust a 15 game sample. However, His AAA numbers this year mirror what he did. Minor league numbers dont mean much in The Show but he has got on base at every other level throughout his career in the minors. Maybe he has made the MLB adjustments he needed. I’m going to skip to the point. Gardner’s OBP is only .317 this year. Even if Allen still is the kid with a .307 OBP that’s not much of a downgrade. I agree with you 100%. Allen offers this club hope, excitement & Upside. Meanwhile, Gardner’s nice 14 year MLB career has reached its end. Time to hang up the cleats & give the 28 year old (who is still nearly a decade younger) a chance.

Sentimentality of keeping Gardner in a race for the playoffs makes no sense. I love the guy but it’s way past time to cut him.

Interesting that they seem to prefer Davis over Allen in the fungible backup CFer role. Not sure I can figure a reason why, but not sure it’s even with thinking about.

Allen should never have been sent down. No one else would have scored from 1st the other night.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that if they sent Davis down the Yankees would have to expose him to the waiver process and thus face losing him. As many others have mentioned signing and retaining Brett Gardner was/is their biggest mistake.

While that may be the case now, the Yankees had no idea as to what they had with Allen at the beginning of the year and there was no Davis option until a few days ago….hind site is great but at least with Gardner, they knew they had a dependable glove in both left and center….don’t disagree that his bat certainly isn’t helping, but Allen hasn’t done much either over his last 10 and this kid Davis is rated one of the fastest in the league…so why not.
All this being said, Gardy will not be a part of the 2022 Yankees so all those Gardner haters just need to wait a bit longer.

Davis has minor league options. This is about opening a 40 man roster spot for a slew of guys who will need it in the next few weeks. No need to be redundant with both Allen and Davis (along with Gardner) hogging up precious 40 man roster spots.

Batting average against one side in a small sample size.

Don’t insult anyone until you understand how stupid that is.

You’re literally using a 37 ABs small sample size to tout his .400 OBP.

I see your arrogant stupidity has carried over from your RAB days.

Send down the best centerfielder on the team with a .400 OBP.

It’s so funny when the Yankees talk about analytics and then do stuff like this.

This is about opening up a 40-man roster spot. Wandy Peralta, Schmidt, Severino, Kluber and all the Covid guys will need a roster spot by the end of this month. I imagine Gittens and Amburgey are next on the chopping block (if they’re not 60-day IL candidates)

Just another example of Trashman and his sabermetric minions. If Joe DiMaggio or Mickey Mantle was playing in this era, they would never had made it to the Hall of Fame. Maybe Cashman and his team can tell us how many World Series has the A’s won for Billy Beane? Or better yet, how man World Series has the A’s appeared in using Moneyball?
