Brandon Belt Expected To Miss Around Four Weeks Due to Thumb Fracture

By Darragh McDonald | September 28, 2021 at 7:07pm CDT

SEPTEMBER 28: Belt has been placed on the 10-day injured list, with Thairo Estrada recalled to take his active roster spot. Belt’s fracture is expected to take around four weeks to fully heal, reports Andrew Baggarly of the Athletic (Twitter link). It’s possible the club attempts to expedite his return to the field even before the bone is fully healed, with the plan for Belt to be reevaluated on an approximately weekly basis.

That wouldn’t officially end Belt’s season, but it does seem likely the Giants will need to make a deep postseason run (perhaps as far as the World Series) to give him an opportunity to return. Ruf, who is eligible to be activated from his own IL stint this week, seems likely to handle first base for the Giants throughout most of the playoffs.

SEPTEMBER 27: The Giants have announced that an x-ray revealed a fracture in the left thumb of first baseman Brandon Belt, as relayed by several reporters, including Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Belt was hit on the thumb by a pitch in yesterday’s game and was pulled a short time later. The expected recovery timeline is still unknown right now, as Belt still plans on more meetings with doctors, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com. However, for comparison’s sake, both J.T. Realmuto and Joey Votto suffered a fractured thumb earlier this year and missed about a month before returning to action.

This is awful timing for Belt and the Giants, both because the postseason begins in a week and because Belt had been on such a tear of late. Since returning from a knee injury August 5th, Belt’s slash line is an absurd .297/.394/.690, hitting 18 home runs in that stretch. That production is 83% better than league average, according to wRC+. After three straight years of lagging production from 2017 to 2019, Belt has essentially been on fire the past two years. Since the start of the 2020 season, in 148 games, his line is .285/.393/.595. His wRC+ of 163 in that time is the third-best in the majors among those with at least 550 plate appearances, trailing only Juan Soto and Bryce Harper.

As for the team, they are already guaranteed a playoff spot, though which kind is still to be determined. They are currently two games ahead of the Dodgers for the lead in the NL West, with each team having six games remaining. In the absence of Belt, they will likely turn to Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr., who have each seen some time at first base this year. Darin Ruf could be an option down the road, but he himself was just placed on the IL on Thursday with an oblique injury. Those three all have good numbers this year, but the loss of Belt’s potent bat is certainly a blow to the offense, as it would be to any team’s.

It’s also unfortunate timing for Belt, career-wise, as he’s heading into free agency in just over a month. This injury could deny him the ability to add to his postseason ledger, which already includes a pair of World Series titles with the Giants in 2012 and 2014. Although, based on the incredible numbers he’s put up over the past two seasons, he should still garner plenty of interest on the open market, even if he’s unable to make another appearance this year.

It’s going to be difficult to replace his production , especially going into the playoffs. He’s been clutch as well, which obviously cannot be quantified easily. Giants are deep, but replacing Belt?

        Hope he recovers quickly.

Awful news! But this team has the depth to over come this. The only two questions are (a) how long will Belt be out, and (b) how will the layoff have affected him?

I googled it, and this was kind of the median answer: “To be on the safe side, a player with a broken thumb or finger will probably miss 2-3 weeks at minimum but the full recovery time is somewhere in the area of 4-5 weeks.”

Of course, we don’t know the variables yet.

The issue is a couple things; takes a big bat out of the line up so takes away a bench bat also takes away a excellent defensive first baseman. In the post season defense matters as you can’t let a good team have a extra out. Really shortens the giants starting line up.

I would think he would be gone all post season

Rather depends on how long their run is. If they lose the wild card game; yes. If they win the division and their NLDS series? Maybe on the NLCS roster, maybe not, but odds are he makes the World Series roster were they to make it that far.

Not much surprising since in giants park the ball doesn’t carry to right and it’s a longer porch. Bryant won’t, if they had schwarber or freeman, a lefty towards that short porch in left, 40+

No way you can play through a broken thumb. Hitters routinely get jammed or sawed off which causes vibrations through all the hand, fingers and thumbs. That would cause more issues with thumb and swollen which would not be good. Best bet be let him sit and heal.

Stupendousyappi; I am a Braves fan a few years ago Freeman played through a injury in playoffs and cost the team more than they gained. The thumb is a big part of the bat grip if he does I think he will be 50-60% at best of what he is. I have broken a thumb before and don’t think he could handle 4 at bats a night plus defensive liability

@Benjamin101677 he can easily hold it away from the bat. Actually the majority of the hand strength holding the bat comes from the other fingers. Perhaps freeman just had a bad series I know thats impossible for Braves fans to believe but that may be what happened!

Depends on his swing really. Realmuto had no problem catching with the thumb, but had trouble swinging the bat so it took him a bit to recover. Not too long though.

IF Ronnie Lott can cut a finger and still play….although Belt is in a contract year and may feel his stats alone pushed his value enough.

@Datashark Ronnie Lott’s actions are not a model to uphold in the area of toughness or dedication. That little bit of finger didn’t stop him from running or defending against the pass. Belt’s broken thumb will affect the way he holds a bat. Cutting off his thumb would likely exacerbate the issue.

Belt’s primary concern doesn’t seem to be driving up his value, but playing in the post season.

The Babylonians used to cut off the thumbs of the opposing kings to prevent them from fighting/challenging the Babylonian king with a sword. Thumbs are important when gripping / swinging objects.

Datashark, the Lott story is a myth. I found that out when I watched an ESPN story about Lott and he sheepishly admitted to it. They taped him up on the sideline and had surgery on the finger later. Btw, its belts throwing hand. Bad analogy

Although yes his pinky was badly injured in a game, he didn’t cut it off to keep playing in that game. So yes, he continued to play even though his pinky was toast (baddass for sure) and heavily bandaged, here’s the real story:

He had the tip of his left pinky finger amputated after the 1985 season when it was crushed while tackling running back Timmy Newsome, and a bone graft surgery would not have allowed him to start the 1986 season.

Nitwit, he has a few bunt singles this year. And the pitch was thrown right at him. Yeah, he should have jerked his hand away at the last second but again, thrown right at him at 93 mph. It’s happened to many an expert bunter. Pitchersare taught to throw way inside when they recognize a bunt attempt. Maybe you should take a remedial history of baseball class. BTW, Nitwit, try staring at a 93 mph fastball coming right at you. Just make sure you have your Depends on. And stick to your usual puns. That’s all you are good at.

So Lloyd, go ahead and defend the weasel and I’ll continue to risk hurting his feelings with stuff people like Nentwig need to hear. In all fairness the Dodgers are without a Cy Young caliber pitcher (Bauer) and a young stud (May) for the season and were without Kershaw for 2 months on top of Seager being out.

For the Dodgers to be right there with them after losing all if that plus more throughout the season says a lot about the Dodgers.

No other team could withstand those losses. So to be fair, it’s simply evening the playing field a bit. Still not even close to what the Dodgers have lost this season though.

Yes, the Dodgers have lost quiet a few (important) players this season, but so have the Giants. However, Belt is the hottest hitter on the team—probably the majors right now. To lose him at this point in the season is awful . . . But the Giants have shown they are deep, and crying won’t do the team any good. Play on!

The Dodgers, in my opinion, have lost far more than the Giants this year.
          Reigning NL Cy Young pitcher
          Up and coming Dustin May
          Over two months of Kershaw.
Loss of one of the hitter hitters in the NL this year, AJ Pollack for six weeks
          Seager 65 games
Nelson great comeback year cut short by surgery.

          @Biff

The talent level that both teams lost is light years apart.

The Giants were without Longoria a player who was considered a bad contract just last season.

They were without Belt a player who is more known for his defense than his offense and he plays 1B an offensive position.

I can go down the list with Crawford and Cueto as well. Their best years were thought to be behind them. Crawford is having a great season but come on man. He is no Seager or Betts who the Dodgers lost at times this season.

The Dodgers were without 2/5 of the starting rotation for most of the season and 3/5 of the rotation for 2 plus months.

It’s not even close if you take the 3 year averages of the players missing from both sides.

The Dodgers have been without Cy Young pitchers and MVP candidates while the Giants have been without their 35 year olds players who were borderline DFA candidates 2 years ago.

Huge difference in talent. Even though the stats this year makes it appear that the Giants lost star players.

I can assure you that none of them are star players. They are aging vets that rebounded back from a 3-4 year downward trend.

The Giants are playing way above their heads and have been for most of the season….so there’s that….

If they were this good the experts would have had them winning 90 plus games but to be honest this is an 85 win team outperforming their expectations….

90% of baseball experts were wrong. The ones who came back with “now we see why they are so good” are only saving face for being wrong in the first place.

Going off of their stats “THIS” season yes they are playing well. But take their stats from the last 3-4 seasons snd this team is an 85 win team at best.

Hindsight is 20/20. Meaning one can look at their stats “THIS” season and say “now I see how they are doing so great”.

Well no $hit, they are near the top in most categories so of course they are doing great.

But how is the question. Some of their players have never been good. Others were DFA candidates just 2 seasons ago and were considered bad contracts.

For everything to click on one season is odd to say the least. I guarantee this is an anomaly as they will not win more than 85 games next season. No way does Gausman pitch like he did in the first half this season if he even returns to the Giants.

No way does ALL of their age 35+ players repeat their output from this season.

This has been an anomaly type season no doubt.

You can read off THIS seasons stats all you want and say you seen this coming but the truth is most experts had them winning 75-85 games.

It’s easy to look at their numbers NOW and say they are the team to beat. But the question is where did these numbers come from. They certainly weren’t there the past 3-4 years and won’t be there next year.

Great job cherry-picking bud. You’ve been saying all year what a joke this team is. Now that they’ve won 104+ wins theyre “not that good if you average out their stats across 3 years.” If they’re good for the next 3 years will your next argument be that they “haven’t been that good across the past 7 years”?

Quit moving the needle and sit down.

Nope they will return to mediocrity next season making this season an anomaly as I said all along. Go back and look through my posts.

I clearly said that they are playing above their heads and this is simply an anomaly. Nothing more.

This team is so far out of their realm even they were shocked at first.

You can look at this years stats and see why they are in first place. They are near the top in most categories so yeah it’s easy to see why they are where they are.

But where did this come from? It certainly hasn’t been there the past few seasons.

Most of their aging vets were considered bad contracts just 2 seasons ago and the bench depth was made up of rejects from other teams.

This was considered a bad team going into this season. They were being chastised for holding onto their aging vets too long.

Now out of the blue they are in first place and everyone on here says they can see why that is. Please.

This is a 105 win team in an 85 win body. It believe in all sports every season every a good team does bad and a bad team does good.

This isn’t the start of some dynasty lol. This is an anomaly and nothing more. Last hoorah for most of them. They played their hearts out.

At this point they could put Moronta at first base and win. They have that edge and they have heart. But the talent level is still the same as it’s been. They are a mid-tier team simply overachieving.

They can toss out Leone or Banda against star pitchers and still win. Not because it take by but because of intangibles they have that most teams do not.

Typos suck. I meant to say “This happens every year in every major sport where some good teams struggle and some bad teams flourish”.

Not one person had the Broncos or Panthers or Raiders having more wins than the Bills or Chiefs or 49’ers after 3 weeks. Unless they are homers. It happens every year though in every sport.

Then my 2nd and last typo I meant “They could literally toss out Leone or Banda against guys like Scherzer or deGrom and still win, not because of talent, but because of intangibles”.

If this was some super team they would be good again next season. But they won’t so this is an anomaly. Nothing more.

Stop making it something it isn’t and move along.

There’s a huge flaw in your argument. The 2021 Giants team is very different from the 2019 Giants. That team had guys like Panik, Tyler Austin, Mac Williamson, Scooter Gennett, and Vogt, But the biggest difference was the SPs. They had Bum, Samardzija, Beede, Dereck Rodriguez, Shaun Anderson and Pomeranz starting games. Plus, that team might have been mediocre, but was not terrible, finishing 3rd, ahead of the Rockies and Padres, 8 games under.

The 2020 Giants was nearly a .500 team, but still different from the 2021 team. That team was minus Posey. Instead they had an unready, and overwhelmed Joey Bart, The position players were similar, but they lacked depth. They had Pence, Sandoval, Smoak, and Heineman on that team. But again, the big difference was the rotation. Cueto started more games than anyone. They had a somewhat clueless, 23 year old Logan Webb, who has since stepped it up, They also relied on Trevor Cahill to start games. And worst of all, they had Trevor Gott closing.

Saying they were bad in 2019, is irrelevant to them being good in 2021. The 2019 team still had a good core. Posey, Belt, Longoria, Yastrzemski, and Crawford. There’s a big difference between a team with those guys, and no depth, and the 2021 team with those guys, plus a healthy Posey, and the depth that guys like Bryant, Flores, Wade, La Stella, Ruf, Estrada, and Casali bring.

Not to mention a quantum leap in the effectiveness of the bullpen. You’ll say guys like DeSclafani aren’t good, and you’d be wrong, but even if he wasn’t, all the Giants need is 5 decent innings from him to scratch up another W because of their pen..

Continuing to insist that you are right, that the Giants aren’t a good team, just playing way over their heads, just makes you look stubborn. Others that predicted a 75 to 80 win season, have admitted they were wrong, and have looked for the real reasons why they’ve won 104 games so far. MLB is a copycat sport, and they’ll have a better handle on upcoming seasons than you, because teams will undoubtedly mimic the Giant’s success going forward.

Plus, quit comparing MLB to the NFL. They’re completely different, and that only hurts what credibility you have.

Good points about the differences in the 2019-2020-2021 teams, yes there are differences but a lot of people wrote off many of the Giants aging players.

Everything clicked this season and they have to be the luckiest franchise in all of team sports. They catch breaks like I have only seen them catch.

They could literally be down 7-2 in the 8th inning against the best bullpen in baseball and come out on top. Not because they have the most talent because obviously that isn’t the case.

But they know how to win. They grind until the last out. They don’t give up and they have plenty of luck on they side. Whether it be their 26th player that gets the winning hit or their spot starter tossing 7 scoreless against an all-star lineup.

The Giants aren’t the most talented team even in their own division much less the NL. But they win. That’s what they do. It’s crazy.

Absolutely no one had them winning 100 games this season. You can list stats from this season and say that’s why they are in first place. Sure now that they lead or are near the top in most categories.

But nobody saw this coming. Career years for a few. Bounce back years from a few and then out of nowhere seasons from the rest.

They play their heart out and on paper they look overmatched but I think they thrive on that. Tough team. They don’t have the best at any position but they are well balanced and very tough.

Hats off to them but I seriously think this was an anomaly and they will be back to 85 wins next season. Just my take.

          Good points though tad2b

That said, you guys have had a great year and all kinds of comeback wins and loads of confidence.
I still think you’re the team to beat in the NL West (with 6 games to play) and have a good chance to be in the WS.
My Dodgers just can’t get it firing on all cylinders (unlike the Giants).
Good luck in the playoffs and I hope we’re battling it out for the NL crown.

I would say keep Longo at 3rd and maybe move Bryant to first, if one of them had to move to first. Bryant has had a few too many throwing errors, in my opinion, although I’m not sure the exact number. Bryant makes a good LF or 1B, though maybe not the best option at the hot corner. Longo has always been a solid defensive presence, besides colliding with Craw a couple months ago

After all the Dodgers lost Bauer and May and Seager and Kershaw did 2 plus months each and 2 are out for the season.

If you truly want to even the playing field take 2 of Gausman or DeSlafani or Webb away from the Giants and Crawford for say 2-3 months each at the same time.

See where the Giants would be if they lost all those players for 2-3 months at the same time. I think they would be sitting at 85 wins.

It’s like the 49’ers losing Kittle and the Rams losing Higbee or the Panthers losing CMC and the Bills losing Singletary.

          Huge difference in talent.

One team (SF) lost aging veterans who were considered bad contracts as recent as last season. Some even DFA candidates.

The other team (LA) lost 2 Cy Young winners and 2 MVP’s plus a ROY.

Anomalies yes. But take their 3 year averages and it adds up to bounce back campaigns. Huge losses. Good team.

But the Dodgers are a powerhouse team that lost 2 aces and 2 MVP’s. Hard to come back from that.

All things being equal and no injuries to either team I think the Dodgers would be leading the division by a few games.

But injuries a part of sports. So hats off to both teens for having the depth to withstand those losses.

I mean, coming from a giants fan: the dodgers have much more talent than the giants do, so you have the ability to lose players who’ve been superstars recently, and we do not. However, we have the depth that you lack, and that makes every injury we suffer much less impactful. We can call up thairo estrada, or mauricio dubon, and they’ll produce pretty well for us. Heck, half our roster earlier this year started at AAA sacramento.

Basically, my argument is that since you’ve lost players who historically have been superstars, and we’ve lost players that have been mediocre recently but were stars this year, you consider your team’s injuries much worse, when they actually aren’t

Will he be a good teammate or Kryptonite? Bauer was already damaged goods when the Dodgers signed him. Reminds me of the story about Greinke throwing Puig’s suitcase off the team bus.

You are discounting the value of having an unlimited payroll. When player X goes down, the Dodgers can always get a Max Scherzer/Trae Turner quality player to replace him. During the 50s & 60s, some impugned that the poor KC A’s were a Yankees farm team. But today we have a recent WS Champion, the Washington Nationals practically giving you their two best players….while you still WHINE about injuries. LMAO!

The Giants had many players in the IL including several SP at once. Cueto still out. Others still not quite up to speed after returning. Many tired bullpen guys that had to step up. We had 3 main infielders out for a while. It hasn’t been easy in 2021, but true backups stepped up and the depth Zaidinhas built saved us.

Corey Seager fractured his finger (fifth metatarsal) and missed 65 games this year. The thumb is by far more important when it comes to gripping a bat or wielding a glove. And no one has described the nature of the break. Was it compound? Was it a clean break? Was it comminuted?

A return too soon could jeopardize proper healing particularly in a walk year.

Sucks big time but injuries are part of the game.

What is all this talk about Belts last game as a Giant? He along with Posey and Crawford is part of the surviving core of Even Year Champions that gives the Giants their swag and mystique. You don’t let a bad a$$ like that walk – ever. The MOJO intangibles by itself is worth the price of the contract.
