SEPTEMBER 24: Borucki’s suspension was reduced to two games on appeal. He’ll miss Toronto’s next two games in Minnesota.
SEPTEMBER 23: Major League Baseball has suspended Blue Jays reliever Ryan Borucki for three games “for intentionally hitting Kevin Kiermaier of the Tampa Bay Rays with a pitch during the bottom of the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game at Tropicana Field.” Borucki has also received an undisclosed fine. He is appealing the suspension, so he’ll remain on the active roster until that appeal is heard.
As is typical, Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for Borucki’s actions. Montoyo will serve his ban tonight, missing this evening’s game against the Twins.
With the Rays leading last night’s game 7-1, Borucki hit Kiermaier in the back with a first-pitch fastball. Benches cleared, and Borucki was ejected by third base umpire Joe West after the fracas was sorted out. After the game, Borucki denied that he hit Kiermaier intentionally, claiming that the ball slipped out of his hand (via ESPN).
The incident came just two days after Kiermaier was at the center of controversy between the two clubs. During Monday’s game, Kiermaier was thrown out at home plate attempting to score on a Jake Lamb throwing error. The play ended the inning and the Blue Jays departed the field. While sitting next to home plate, Kiermaier picked up a gameplan card that had been dropped by Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk (video via Arash Madani of Sportsnet). Kiermaier took the card back to the Tampa Bay dugout.
It’s not clear whether Kiermaier was aware of what was on the card at the time he picked it up. After the game, the Rays center fielder told reporters he initially believed it to be his own gameplan card, which he keeps in his pocket during games to aid his positioning on defense. Kiermaier refused to return the card to the Blue Jays once he realized its contents, upsetting some in the Toronto organization. That bad blood seemingly carried over into Wednesday’s game.
The Rays and Jays are not scheduled to play one another again this season, but it’s possible they’ll play meet in the playoffs. Tampa Bay enters play tonight with a two and a half game advantage over the Astros for the top seed in the American League. If they hold onto that position, they’ll face the winner of the AL Wild Card game in their Division Series. Toronto trails the Yankees by half a game in the race for the final AL Wild Card spot.

good!
The Mets "Missed WAR"
The article did say Kermier refused to return it. I’m not sure if him picking up the card was wrong or not but you can tell by the video and the way he was looking around to see if anyone noticed his claim that he “believed it to be his own game card” is absolute BS. He knew when he picked it up and he admits he knew when he refused to return it. If Kermier did the right thing then stop making up lies about it. It just makes him look guilty. If he did the wrong thing than give it back when you admit you knew it wasn’t yours. Kermier handled it the worst possible way regardless of which circumstance is true.
Moonlight Grahamcracker
As a Rays fan, I can say his story is as believable as Borucki’s that the HBP was unintentional. Kiermaier was under no obligation to return the card, so Toronto has nothing to be upset about.
TalkSomeSense
No one who watched the video can say with a straight face that KK picked it up by accident. Nice to see where the Devil Rays stand on the integrity/sportsmanship meter.
josebatflip
How is stealing the opposition’s card different than the Astros stealing signs? Still cheating and pretty goddamned douchy!
MagRupe
Nooooo. That’s bush league. Is it technically cheating? No. But it’s against the very idea of good sportsmanship.
As for Borucki, he is now the 1,246,752 pitcher to say that he didn’t throw intentionally.
KK had it coming to him. While Borucki defended his team, kiermaier embarrassed his.
ssfd209
So i bump into you and you drop your wallet and i pick it up,I am NOT obligated to return it to you?
slimmycito
Absolutely not hahaha. Like not at all in any way. As someone who watched the game and is a Blue Jays fan, yeah it was bs, I’m glad he got hit, but it’s not that big a deal, that’s how things go. It’s not KK’s fault Stripling gave up 5 runs in 1.1 that day. Also shout out to the guy up there still calling them the Devil Rays lol.
slimmycito
He edited it ahaha
mt in baltimore
You are correct!
The Mets "Missed WAR"
The HBP was intentional as well but probably deserved. The pitcher at least had a reason to lie about this intent though. If he denies it he can appeal his suspension and get a lower fine and shorter suspension as a result. Kermier had literally no reason to lie about his intent. He can’t get suspended or fined for that. I would have picked the card up, too. Then I would’ve made a copy of it and when they asked for it back I would have given it back because I’d still have all the info anyway. Most importantly I would have said it’s the opposing players obligation to keep his team info secure and not mine. Of course I took it since it was just sitting there next to me and whoever dropped it had already walked away. I want to win baseball games. It’s not against the rules and as long as it’s allowed I’ll do whatever it takes time help my team. KK just lying about it for absolutely no reason does nothing for him but show a lack of integrity. It’s also very douchy. He should have just been honest about it since there would be no consequences. Once you consider how easy it would have been for him to copy down the info, why not just show a little class and give it back when they ask? He could’ve still had every advantage of picking it up while also maintaining his honesty, integrity and respect. Why throw all that away by lying when you have no reason to?
Fever Pitch Guy
KK was under a moral obligation to return the card. It’s no different than if an opposing player drops his hat, his sunglasses, his glove, anything.
Even if KK truly didn’t realize it wasn’t his until he got to the dugout, he should have photographed it and then sent the ballboy to return it. His excuse of not wanting to walk over to the Jays dugout is BS, there’s no need for players to run errands with ballboys right there.
RazorRamonie
I don’t think those 2 even compare at all it was a literal cheat sheet that the other team had on them not a certain sound to tell your teammates what pitch is coming. Not cheating at all he took away something they have copies of in the dugout he totally shouldn’t have given it back
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
So I’m a thief & I come into your store to rob you. I drop my gun & the store owner picks it up. The store owner can now hold me until the cops get there. Is the store owner obligated to give the gun back? If you’re sloppy enough to give info to your opponents they can take the upper hand.

What does kiermaier stealing a game card have anything to do with Batista? Dumbest comment of the feed award goes to you and the 11 people who liked it
GASoxFan
I guess the info on the gameplan card KK stole didn’t include “we’ll throw at anyone who steals this card.”
KK must’ve figured he was safe, good to see the game plan was modified to counteract the theft.
Thomas Walker
3 games for 93-94 in the middle of the back, that was no doubt on purpose? Borucki’s move was completely bush. Should have been 5 games, if not more.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
Ah yes, the old “ball slipped out of my hand” defense. So now when players lose their cheat sheets, & someone else picks it up, lets plunk him b/c it’s his fault he found it. Hey Manfred, it’s all getting away from you.
josebatflip
Kirk dropped it in an action-packed play at the plate. It’s not like he was clumsy.

Right you are. The entire game has gotten away from that sob.
Grade_1_teacher
And what would you call Kiermaier’s move?
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
You’re right, Kiermaier’s mommy should take the item in question, & return it to Alejandro Kirk’s mommy, & scold Alejandro for not holding on to his lunch money. Are you kidding?

For Love of the Game

Yes let’s ditch the DH and watch more pitchers hit sub .100 so you can see guys get hit like 2 times in a season. You realize Borucki is a reliever and the game was 7-1 late right?
mt in baltimore
Somehow I don’t think this is over.
Could be the start of a running feud—-caused by the Jays pissiness. .
Dustyslambchops23
Wasn’t happy they jays went in this direction but KK’s move and comments after we’re equally as bush league as the beaning.
Get Off My Mound
To each there own I guess. Kiermaier never retaliated back with physical harm, like Borucki did.
Dustyslambchops23
Like I said I didnt want that retaliation
But you can’t pull moves like that and expect nothing to happen. KK knew exactly what he was doing
Get Off My Mound
That should never result in potentially ending a players career, which is what any pitcher that intentionally hits a batter with a pitch for any reason is doing.
Dustyslambchops23
Ok calm down, he didn’t head hunt, he aimed for the numbers. Don’t be so dramatic
Get Off My Mound
Theres nothing dramatic about it. Its simple fact. Doing that puts a batter at risk of serious injury. Whether he aimed for the numbers or not, it could have easily hit him in the head. He claims the ball “slipped”, if thats so and he was aiming for the numbers, it could have easily “slipped”, and beaned him in the head. You might be comfortable putting batters at risk like that, but I’m not.
Fever Pitch Guy
Agreed, as Forrest would say always aim for the butt-tox.
Dustyslambchops23
A ball slipping out of a pitchers hand is always a risk. So you’re not making a point. This was clearly intentional, but he aimed for the numbers and hit him right there.
There’s no elimination of risk of injury when we are talking about 95 mph fastballs.
Get Off My Mound
My point is, intentionally throwing 95 plus at a player, puts them at serious risk for injury. So I am making a point. I definitely wouldn’t want you as my little league coach, I’d be afraid my kid would come home bruised and battered.
Dustyslambchops23
If the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree I’m sure your kid is better suited for golf or curling anyways
Dorothy_Mantooth
Grow a sack! Baseball has always had the bean ball as part of the game and should continue to have it in my opinion. Hitting someone below the shoulders in the back is by no means career threatening. What is career threatening is a pitcher taking a 110mph line drive off of the face, but they don’t do anything about that. What KK did and said to the media afterwards was beyond bush league and he had to know if the game got out of hand like it did, he was going to be a target. I have no problem with at all. Now if he was hit in the head, that’s a completely different story.
1984wasntamanual
It seems like in a lot of the bean ball cases, some fans on here get more bent out of shape about batters getting hit than the actual batters that…ya know, get hit.
Get Off My Mound
If that was intended to be an insult, that a was a very piss poor attempt. Also shows how you have to devolve to what you believe to be insults in this disagreement, which shows a child like behavior on your end. You might wanna work on that.
Get Off My Mound
“Grow a sack”, lol. What a male chauvinist point of view. Your way of thinking of the game in regards to this outdated and should be moved on from.
PeteWard8
Did you see Shaw tonight? Every time he got the ball back he worked it over with the ring he was wearing. Did anyone else see that?
Get Off My Mound
Considering how bent out imof shape Kiermaier got about getting hit… This doesnt apply here.

What are you, 5 years old? Grow a pair, boy.
Dustyslambchops23
The hilarious thing is that my first and second comment very clearly expressed the opinion that I didn’t care for what Borucki did.
But you’re crying because I won’t cry about it as much as you. Feels like you need everyone to be as dramatic and whiny as you, you might want to work on that

Shut up buddy your name is literally “LaCock” … when did you start watching baseball? This seems like a new thing for you. Guys have been getting plunked for much less for 100 years.
Get Off My Mound
Considering you dont know that LaCock is an old baseball player, the last guy to homer off Bob Gibson in fact, you have no business talking down to me about my knowledge of baseball. But, you know, just saying that something has been done for ex amount of time always means its an acceptable thing to do, right?
its_happening
Pete, stop it. If the batter feels there is danger he can retire and pick up a career in something less dangerous. This is the rush whether there is intent or not. Ridiculous take considering hitters are afforded the greatest protection on their bodies more than ever before. Pitchers can’t use sticky substances but hitters wearing arm padding to crowd the plate? Perfectly acceptable!!
Nobody cares how comfortable you are with a drilling. Step far away from the plate if the fear is that bad.
Yankee Clipper
Part of any sport is the inherent competition that drives these premier athletes. Part of that is emotional, the team is your tribe. But there are some takeaways from this:
1) Intentional hit-by-pitch has always been a part of the game. Yes, it’s sucks getting hit, but players understand that. In fact Freddie Freeman just said so in a press conference after he was HBP, but only took issue with the multiple attempts to hit him. Getting suspended for one HBP is stupid.
2). Justifying KK’s theft (which is defined literally by taking/keeping another’s property without permission to do so) should be punishable by the League. This is the most literal case of sign-stealing if there ever was one…he literally stole signs from the catcher, lol. And, I say this as a fan of his, not from a biased predetermined viewpoint.
3) HBP can adversely affect a player’s career, however most IHBPs are thrown at areas that do not cause injury. If it does, series consequences should be employed, ie: throwing at/hitting a player’s head intentionally. Yadi was just beaned twice in one game!
Notwithstanding the former, if a pitcher hits a player after warning, then punishment is due. I just wish they would man-up and charge the mound! Call me what you wish.
dodger1958
Pete LaCock is the son of Peter Marshall (the old Hollywood Square MC). He and I played football together in High School. LaCock is the family name. He now lives in Arizona.

Just a pitching coach that protects his pitching staff. Reminded me of Gibby. Man I wish Gibby was still coach.
Grade_1_teacher
So do I. Montoyo is too close to Cash and he’s soft. Gibby never would have allowed that.
Fever Pitch Guy
Gibby would have gone all Hillenbrand on KK.

Gibby wouldve had that scorecard snatched up before Kiermaier would’ve even seen it. Then get tossed for yellin at Kiermaier for trying to take it.
Fever Pitch Guy
And Gibby would have punched Raymond in the face on his way off the field.
josebatflip
Gibby was great. Montoyo seems like a good guy but not the best strategist. Plus maybe too easy on the players.
Dustyslambchops23

dave frost nhlpa
Low class KK picking up the card in the first place. Since when does a batter/runner have one in their helmet, let alone, pocket, while his club is batting? Zero integrity.
The pitch that hit him was suspendible.
TheBoatmen
KK should have just owned up to what he did. What are the chances they both had cheat cheats and they looked the same. The excuse that he thought it was his was bogus. For that he deserved to be beaned. If he owned up and said he knew what he was doing then fine, all’s fair in baseball and war which is why he didn’t give it back.
Get Off My Mound
So you think it is excusable and okay to potentially harm another player, simply for cheating? Cheating is immoral, but not nearly as much as intentionally harming someone over it. HBP’s can potentially ruin careers, give concussions, etc. Very wrong of you to endorse hitting other players with pitches.
Dorothy_Mantooth
News flash Pete LaCock; MLB pitchers are pretty damn good at throwing the ball where they want to. He did not throw at his head; hitting someone in the numbers or in the butt is the safest place to do so and send a message. Mission accomplished! KK deserved it and I bet he’d even admit that he did. If he had gone head hunting, that’s completely different but he did not. Getting hit between the shoulder blades sends the perfect message.
Get Off My Mound
So, based off of your observations, the values that we should instill in people through baseball is to: Let your emotions get the best of you, and let violence settle things out for you. You know whats the best kind of retaliation? Winning. Beating the other team. Not getting caught up in some other whiney player who does suspect things, and letting them get you riled up. So riled up, that you think the best way to get back at them is to throw a 95 plus pitch at them, wherever it may be. If you think thats the grown up way to react to things, you need ACTUALLY grow up and reevaluate how you handle life. Most jobs would actually fire you or keep you in a low paying position for having that type of behavior. Letting your emotions get the best of you, and resorting to low measures, are undesirable in most American businesses.
EBJ
Pete, here are the main values I tried to instill in my child: Value Number One: Do Not Lie. Value Number Two: Do Not Cheat. Value Number Three: Do Not Steal. KK knowingly did all three. So you don’t think the punishment fit the crime, fine. The consensus seems to be that it most certainly does. What should the punishment have been, or do you think an “immoral” act, as you described it, should have no consequence.
its_happening
Pete it’s called accountability. Look it up, know what it is, then understand that’s what players do. Don’t forget they are part of the union. 99.9% of the players don’t want to see careers end.
Get Off My Mound
I clearly stated the punishment. Beat them. Win the game. The ultimate punishment. It is a game after all, not something that actually matters when it comes down to real life.
Get Off My Mound
If you think violence and/or causing intentional physical harm=accountability, thats how 3rd world countries usually live, and you should probably join one.
Get Off My Mound
Those 3 values are perfectly fine. Retaliation with violence when there was no violence to begin with is also a great 4th value that will get you very far in life.
dodger1958
EBJ So while he may have lied, cheated and stolen what did the pitcher do?He lied about not plunking him and he cheated by intentionally hitting him. Seems like an endless cycle.
its_happening
A hit by pitch gives the batter first base. This isn’t war or any comparison to third world countries. Those ideas are for betas with no concept of reality. Players are part of unions, let them self-police. If they are dumb enough to ruin careers they will find themselves in serious trouble. Make no mistake.
Grade_1_teacher
If Kiermaier had any sense of professionalism, he would’ve picked up the card and handed it back to Kirk but he didn’t. He deserved to get drilled and he should’ve expected it. He should’ve just admitted it wasn’t the right thing to do when the managers tried to squash it. He was smug and he let it go too far. Kiermaier is scum. Borucki should’ve aimed higher.
Sideline Redwine
You need to calm down, lol. Yes, aim to end a man’s career and potentially his life for something so insignificant!
I’m just thankful you are in your mom’s basement and not actually affecting the real world.
Assuming “grade one teacher” is just a name. If not, I am sure your school district would love to know your idea of discipline is inflicting violence. Anonymity of the internet sure comes in handy, doesn’t it?
phantomofdb
What KK did was egregiously bad. I would have endorsed throwing higher too.
Buhnersideburns
So kiermaier swipes the catchers game plan card and discreetly passes it off as soon as he returns dugout. The Rays then refuse to return it when asked to, and kiermaier pleads ignorance by claiming he didn’t know what it was (his actions in the dug would seem to say otherwise). Then he cries when he takes a fastball to the back, and the Jays player and manager are reprimanded for retaliation….. seems everyone sorta gets what they deserved, however the league should be looking into the rays actions which caused the whole ordeal in the first place.
Chipsss
No one should want the dumb league involved in anything more than they have to be. Situation is over. Let it lie
ericl
Kiermaier knew that it wasn’t his card. His “explanation” was weak. He should’ve owned up to what he did. He didn’t & he got his retribution. Instead of taking it like a man, he cried
Get Off My Mound
Pitchers hitting any batter with a pitch intentionally should be completely condemned by everyone in baseball. Any pitcher who intentionally beans another batter, for whatever reason, is putting that players career at risk, possibly worse. No batter can intentionally hit a pitcher with a pitch they hit back at them, and almost no batter would ever do that if they could easily do that. If not none at all.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Maybe they should change to wiffle balls so no one ever gets hurt, intentionally or not. The bean ball has always been a part of baseball and hopefully it continues to be. The only issue with it is when it is thrown at someone’s head. That’s grounds for a 60 game + suspension, but a ball in the back or a ball in the buttocks is part of the game and these guys who play all understand and accept that. If they want to retaliate, charge the pitcher and punch his lights out. They’d just better hope the pitcher doesn’t have Nolan Ryan boxing skills! The pitcher got suspended so he got his just due by MLB.
I can’t wait for next year when TB looks to get their retaliation back; that is if the team accepts what KK did as being okay. I’m willing to bet half his teammates thought he deserved that after stealing the other team’s game sheet. Complete bush league move by KK.

Dustyslambchops23

wreckage
The point I am making is obviously stated. Someone who cheered for a team that showed such a lack of professionalism as the Jays did in 2016 or in signing Springer has no right to preach about professionalism. The Blue Jays and their fans are about the last pro sports team that can comment on professionalism is sports at this time. The antics of Bautista, beer cans thrown at opposing players, Springer signing… The list goes on.

I can’t believe what I’m reading, Alejandro Kirk was stupid enough to lose his team info. KK found it & turned it in. The idiot here is Alejandro Kirk for his inability to hold on to important team strategy. Maybe the Blue Jays should give Alejandro Kirk a wedgie.
Dustyslambchops23
That’s like saying it was the other teams fault for when the Astro’s stole their signs
foppert
Yes. It’s not a friendly game of bridge over tea and scones. You write helpful info down and then accidentally lose it to the opposition then you pay the price. Kiermaier should have just owned it. “Yep. Took it. Thought it could help us. Wanted to win”
Dorothy_Mantooth
Dude, there was contact at home plate on that play and that’s how Kirk dropped the card. He wasn’t holding it is his hand and trying to make a paper airplane out of it. It was jarred loose on the play so how is that Kirk’s fault?
its_happening
Kirk didn’t protect it. It’s very simple and straight forward Mantooth.
TalkSomeSense
Turned it in? That’s weak . It was an unsportsmanlike play, compounded by refusing to return it.

Yeah this is where I’m at. I don’t understand the sentiment that KK was in any way obligated to pick up a scouting report and return it.
josebatflip
You need to watch the replay. Kirk was involved in a bang-bang play at the plate and the card got knocked loose, probably by KK. Not Kirk’s fault at all.
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
How about this, if you have secret info on your opposition, put it in a pocket with a button on it! If you can’t manage that put a chain on it & attach it to your belt. It’s not the guys fault who picks it up, it’s the guy that loses it!!!!!!

I’m a Rays fan, but KK is super annoying. He goes on and on about his “unique skill set” and how he is the best defensive outfielder in baseball. Confidence is one thing, extreme arrogance is another. While there is a lot to like about his game, his frequent injuries, bad baserunning decisions, making easy catches look hard, pulling off the pitch and trying to hit homers, not knowing how to bunt or even high the ball the other way, etc. are hard to ignore. If the Rays could dump his high salaries, they have better options in center with Phillips, Margot, Bruhan and Lowe.
josebatflip
Agree totally shills. I like the Rays but can’t stand KK. I’m sure they’d love to dump his salary if they could.

Life Rule Number One – Hold on to your stuff.
Why KK even said anything about picking up the card is beyond all comprehension. What card? Dingbat.
Everything else is BS.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Unfortunately, the camera caught KK picking the card up point blank. He stayed on the ground for 4-5 seconds after being tagged out (pouting) so the camera stayed on him. Then he reaches over and clearly picks up the card for everyone to see. It would have taken a Ryan Braun type of lie to try and deny the fact that he grabbed it off the ground. It’s not even the fact that he grabbed it and took it back to the dugout, but it was the post game press conference where he said he wouldn’t return it that ended up sealing his fate. Both KK and Boruki got exactly what they deserved. Now we have to wait until next year to see how Tampa responds. They won’t risk a suspension if the two teams meet in the playoffs unless somehow Toronto is spanking them in the last game of the series and Tampa has no chance to win.

I’d love to see Joe West’s “card”. ;-0

Hey look at this way: KK, after his actions said: “Hey it’s September, I’m not giving it back.” And essentially Borucki’s reply was “Hey it’s September, you can’t take one in the back?!” Tit for tat boys. After all it is a boys game.

I think KK was right to take it, screw the other team we’re trying to clinch the postseason. If a teacher leaves the answer sheet on her desk and leaves the room, are you not gonna take a peek? And if you aren’t, you’re probably a Borucki fan. Needless to say I hope the Jays are this years’ postseason nemesis for the Rays just like the Yankees last year. Should be fun.

Actually I am a Borucki fan but I saw what KK did and thought it was ok as long as it wasn’t reproduced. TBF every team has access to the data on that card either in house or through something like statcast (of course there may be more technical things on the card that I do not know about like direct pitch by pitch instructions). It wasn’t right but it wasn’t wrong. KK did his job and gained a fair advantage

Literally 3/4 of you commenters never even saw the play at home with Kirk and KK lol.
Orel Saxhiser
Oh jeesh. Another misplaced “literally.”

Tsk tsk, illiteracy strikes again.

And act like you’ve never seen a guy get plunked before for way less lol.

the tradition of hitting batters as retaliation is outdated and dangerous, but players understand that this is the code. kk made a conscious decision and should not have been surprised or upset by what happened. i disagree with the practice, but it’s not going anywhere so player’s should act accordingly (i.e. be ready to duck)

Incident between two teams resulting in a beaning? Okay then, was interesting to read about it.

I see people saying Kevin Kiermaier picking that card up was equivalent to the Astros *technologically* stealing signs. I’d argue it was more equivalent to watching someone like Yu Darvish tipping pitches and picking up on it. That said, instead of making excuses for what he did, Kiermaier should’ve owned it.

Playoff baseball actions have consequences, Kiermaier didn’t have to return the card but if ya think the other team isn’t going to find the opportune time to teach a lesson you don’t understand how baseball has worked for over a century. Kiermaier knew the next day he was getting nailed so did the Ray bench.

Sure, but Kevin really didn’t want to feel he was being blamed for doing anything wrong. That’s why he went to such great lengths to pretend he didn’t. A man who absolves himself of guilt will also whine about being punished to keep up his appearance of wanting to be universally liked. He doesn’t want to tarnish his record, and certainly won’t let Ryan Borucki make him pay for anything with a beaning.
I’m sure he has had all his hugs now and gotten a good sleep and is feeling good about himself as the guy who never caused any trouble, just does awesome things on the baseball field. He never did anything he made sure you wouldn’t see or he would admit to doing. He’s all good now.

Based on what I had read, I had the understanding that it was the coach he handed the card to that refused to return it to the bat boy Montoya sent over.
