Coaching Notes: Goodwin, Schumaker, Guardians, Brewers

By Anthony Franco | October 25, 2021 at 10:48pm CDT

The Red Sox are parting ways with first base coach Tom Goodwin, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom told reporters (including Molly Burkhardt of MLB.com). Goodwin had been in that role for the past four seasons, joining Alex Cora’s staff before the latter’s first year as Boston’s manager. After a fourteen-year major league playing career, Goodwin moved into coaching and minor league managing in the Red Sox’s system. Between two separate stints with the Sox, he spent six seasons as Mets’ first base coach. Goodwin’s departure might be the only change on Cora’s staff, as Bloom told reporters the Red Sox are hoping to bring back the rest of the group in 2022.

The latest on a few other coaching situations around the league:

  • The Cardinals have been in contact with Padres associate manager Skip Schumaker about potentially joining the  organization in some capacity, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Almost immediately after the Cards dismissed Mike Shildt as manager, speculation arose about Schumaker — a former Cardinals utilityman — as a potential successor. St. Louis opted to promote bench coach Oliver Marmol instead, although it’s still possible Schumaker could assume some other position on the Cardinals staff. The 41-year-old remains employed by San Diego, but Padres’ coaches were given permission to explore opportunities elsewhere after the Friars dismissed manager Jayce Tingler.
  • The Guardians are on the hunt for a new hitting coach after parting ways with Ty Van Burkleo a few weeks ago. Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com reports that his replacement is expected to come from outside the organization. Searching for a hitting instructor is unfamiliar territory for the Guardians’ front office and manager Terry Francona. Van Burkleo had served in that role for the entirety of Francona’s tenure as Cleveland’s manager, joining the staff leading into the 2013 season.
  • Brewers coaching staff advisor Ed Sedar is retiring, the club announced this morning. Sedar was a longtime member of the staff, working as a base coach for the Brew Crew from 2007-20. He transitioned into an advisory role last winter, with former big league outfielder Quintin Berry stepping into the vacant third base coaching role. Sedar spent the better part of three decades in the Milwaukee organization, first joining the club as a minor league coach in 1992.

Skip Schumaker should go back home to the Cardinals. Hopefully, Mozeliak hires him and he becomes the new bench coach. Nothing like home and he should be back with the Cards.

Fredbird, “Indians” isn’t a racist word like “Redskins.” Should “Brewers” be changed to avoid offending alcoholics? Change “Celtics” to avoid offending Scotch-Irish?

It’s been decided. 3 people on a message board yearning for the good old days pretending it isn’t racist doesn’t change the facts. You guys lost, your comparisons are weak and I’m sure being a drunken racist uncle at a party is quite a draw.

Fredbird – perhaps you can answer this for me. If indian is a racist term then why have there been dozens of native americans appointed to various govt. cabinet posts/agencies that have the term indian in them? You would think as native americans they would be offended and demand the name change..or once in push for the name change. But there seems to be no issue with native americans working for the dept. of indian affairs or the national council of indian gaming rights. I’m certain with a little more research I could find more organizations heading by native americans that have indian in the title – any thoughts? Not trying to be a d**k about it just curious about the obvious disconnect

The word isn’t inherently racist. But if you think the usage by the baseball team was honorable and historical then you are wildly ignorant. Just look at their team logos and mascots over the years.

Ask yourself why you care so much and what your real feelings are.

And yeah, the Fightin’ Irish exist too, but the USA didn’t have official government policy to exterminate the Irish people.

The only reason we were called “Indians” is because that goof Christopher Columbus thought he went to India but he went to the Bahamas instead. Native American, First Nation or even the Tribe name is more fitting. It’s not offensive so much as ignorant because we’re not from India we’re from the American continent. It’s like calling someone from Japan “Chinese”.

A Brewer is a job, not a people.

Assuming the ‘we’ means you are a Native American, then you should really be aware of the fact that you are not from the American continent. You are from Asia. Likely either Mongolian or Siberian.

So does anyone really believe Goodwin’s release had “nothing to do with” not being vaccinated? His performance was fine and he had no off-the-field issues.

Let’s face it, the Red Sox intend to play in the postseason every year and they don’t want to keep replacing their first base coach every September.

        • KD17

FPG – The Red Sox won’t be in the post season until Bloom and Cora are gone. This was a complete fluke. The talent level is too low and the ownership is too cheap to fix the situation.

Fourth place is the destiny of the Red Sox. Yes, there will always be deviations from the norm that can be expected prior to any season but in 2021 based on the talent level of the Red Sox the performance of the players was many standard deviations from the expected norm. To project future comparable aberrations is ridiculous.

The Red Sox are what they are until an influx of talent happens. They are the fourth best team in the division.

Have you taken a poll? It’s not offensive to “many.” And our ancestors didn’t “kill a few million.” All nations and cultures have dark pasts. ALL. Most learn and grow from it. If you want to carry the guilt for your ancestors, that’s on you. But, don’t you dare project it on everybody else, just because your self-imposed misery wants some company.

Whenever people try to lump my ancestors in with stuff like that, I nicely correct them by informing them my parents came from Europe.

FTR – Apparently MLB is cool with the Braves name and the tomahawk chop because the Native Americans in Georgia are cool with it.

I don’t often agree with the MLB commissioner, but I do this time. Let the locals make the decisions.

Most of the folks over here came here because life in their homeland sucked. Anyone need a tale of woe about how the English treated the Irish? Or the woman at the old card game, who had numbers tattooed on her wrist courtesy of her German hosts?

        • SDHotDawg

Some people need to actually get out of the basement and socialize in real life. It’s amazing what you can learn by talking to immigrants from Cuba, Ukraie, Romania, and even China. But that’s something those “woke” morons have never done, and will never do.

        • JoeBrady

Have you ever seen the ‘Defund the Police’ rallies? The pictures I’ve seen are almost 100% white. There are some interesting surveys out there. Only 34% of the democrats support the idea, but only 28% of African-Americans support the idea. Which means that the idea is only popular among white democrats. And I am betting that none of the white democrats that support the Defund position have ever lived in The Bronx.

        • SDHotDawg

“Rallies?” Do you mean protests and riots? BTW, ANTIFA is all young white communists. So, what’s your point?

        • Fever Pitch Guy

Joe – I did a huge amount of research on this subject last year. While it’s not still totally fresh in my memory, I can say with certainty that many young white females were involved in the defund protests and participated in all sorts of destruction from torched police vehicles to smashed store windows

As many have said, who are they to demand defunding the police. They live in wealthy suburban neighborhoods. They don’t live anywhere near the high crime areas where cops are truly needed on a regular basis. But once again, the young white females are trying to force their opinions onto others.

One of the Black Lives Matter protesters facing felony rioting and misdemeanor graffiti charges — after a window-smashing free-for-all in Manhattan — is a wealthy Upper East Sider whose mother is an architect and whose father is a child psychiatrist.

Clara Kraebber, 20, is one of eight people arrested Friday night after a roiling, three-hour rampage that police say caused at least $100,000 in damage from Foley Square up to 24th Street.

          https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/06/us/molotov-cocktail-nypd-claims-trnd/index.html

A White woman accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at a police car in late May during a George Floyd protest in Brooklyn claims she was given the device by a Black protester, New York prosecutors say.
But investigators said the woman got the bottle for the Molotov cocktail from a friend in upstate New York, according to court filings from the US District Court, Eastern District of New York.

From the French Revolution, through the Bolsheviks, Hitler’s party, Maoists, and Cuba, their is one commonality. Communist revolutionaries have always taken advantage of the angst, idealism and ignorance of the youth to be their “soldiers.”

It should be known by now that we’ve lost our educational institutions. We were warned about this in the 70’s and did nothing. These youth have been indoctriated into self-loathing, and we are seeing the results.

        • JoeBrady

They live in wealthy suburban neighborhoods.
          =======================================
It’s the same issues as in the ’70s. My blanket disclaimer here is that not all protests are wrong.

Growing up poor has some disadvantages, but it toughens you up. I think the rich kids are looking for validation and relevancy, while the less well-to-do are looking for a degree and a job. The rich kids, who have always been led by their parents, continue to look to others for leadership. While the less well-to-do, having survived worse environments, have created certain survival instincts, that rich kids have never developed.

Do you recall the SDS? The Weather Underground? Prairie Fire? Almost exclusively rich, white college kids. 100% buy-in to Marxist ideals and ideology.

Dawg – I like you and appreciate how you’re not afraid to tell it like it is.

I agree that’s the biggest problem with society today, the indoctrination of students from grade school to college. Rather than be taught to accept opposing viewpoints and even embrace them, instead they are taught to cancel them out by not allowing them to give their views.

        • Fever Pitch Guy

I’m too young to remember those three. My earliest memory was Patty Hearst. Her IQ was originally 130, but after being brainwashed it was 112. That pretty much says it all.

        • KD17

Ted – Exterminate? What history book are you reading from?

Maybe you need to go back and read about the evolution of civilization and how people like William the Conqueror, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and of course Sargon of Akkad all took over other lands and other people in hopes of ruling the world. The word racism has to do with the inequitable treatment of people with a solitary separation based on race. Conquerors and countries colonizing other geographic locations weren’t racist they were fighting to expand their empire.

The people who fled Europe and created the United States formed a nation then decided to expand to other land geographies just like everyone else in history. It wasn’t racist to gain control of what is now the United States of American it was expansionism just like the colonization of so many countries by England, Spain, France and others.

You have your history terribly wrong and you don’t have a solid understanding of the word racism. American Indians consist of a multitude of tribes and the symbols used in sports may be offensive but the word Indians is a word that represents a group of people that existed in the territory that is now the United States of America. There is nothing racist about the name. It’s a label of a group of people that existed. Nobody has the right to rewrite history to their preference. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the word Indians.

If you want to change the symbols reflecting the Indian cultures that are used in baseball, then go for it. I agree that many reflect poorly on the tribes of Indians that have existed in the United States. Symbols can be racist but a word defining a group of people that existed in the past can not be considered racist. Its a noun used to define all tribes that existed in the past that lived in the territory of the United States of America.

The expansion of the United States was far less brutal than many conquering countries throughout history. To use the word exterminate is ignorant and offensive.

So, your comment that states the name change is a “fact” means you haven’t taken the time to investigate for yourself. You simply take this particular site’s word and opinion as “fact.”

They’re named after the statues on the bridge near the stadium. It’s fine. I’d have rather seen the Spiders, or the Rollers

Was there name chosen by a 3rd graders competition or something??

With all the history in Cleveland, and they chose THAT as their name?? What does it even mean or stand for??

I always thought it should have been Cleveland Rockers…But then again, I also had a poster of John Rocker as a kid…Sooo, maybe I’m not the best judge…lol

Always loved his run from the pen, and his double tap going through his mechanics..Never would have guessed it was all a product of years of meth use..

(It’s a joke, not factually true…Well, idk, kind of actually makes sense now that I think about it..lol)

The crazy thing about Rocker is, for all that he said, his punishment didn’t end up being that harsh. Granted this was long before social media and the cancel culture could you end your whole career overnight, but he ended up getting several chances to return. Make any one of the statements he made today, and bye bye everything.

        True.

Manny Rameriz was driving over it early one morning after a night game. A cop stopped him for speeding. Told Manny he was giving him a ticket. Manny replied: “It’s OK, I play for the team. I get plenty of tickets”.

Yeah, here’s a better one. One time Shin Soo Choo was wasted and didn’t know how to get out of there and back home. He flagged down a cop and asked him to follow him home, needless to say that genius got a DUI.

Methinks the people most upset about the name change aren’t even from Cleveland because of they were they wouldn’t be asking what the time means. If you can find MLBTR you can find Google and look it up.

Cleveland fans know all about the bridge and structure. If you look at the user ids you’d see they aren’t Tribe fans like bravesfan88 here. And if they took away the Tribe’s logo and name, his team shouldn’t be far behind for theirs as well as the tomahawk chop.

Doesn’t Milwaukee need a hitting coach also? I saw they parted ways with the former Cubs coach Andy Haines.

Parted ways/chose to not renew his contract. Essentially the same thing.

However, I think the reason he was there at all (this year anyway) is because of his connection with Yelich. Clearly the magic is gone (or should I say this is the current excuse for Yelich’s far-from-mvp-form over the past 2 seasons), so it’s out with the old, in with the new [potential scapegoat].

I think half of this is a ploy to sell jerseys, but imho, you are taking this too seriously. Being Irish, I like have a team named the Celtics, or the Fighting Irish. But if the First American groups are offended, I don’t give a rat’s a$$ if they change the names.

In other news MLB Labs announced this morning that they’ve successfully produced 29 clones of Kevin Long who will be assigned to all teams except the Phillies who will retain the services of the original Kevin Long. Rob Manfred praised the Labs’ achievement and remarked, “We’ve taken all the guesswork out of hiring a hitting coach across the board. You’re welcome.”

Preller has five “coaches” on the bench, including two “associate” managers. Yeah, but he’s not a micromanaging control freak. And the managers had no inpuf on this bizarre structuring in their dugout.

Political correctness is a dangerous phenomena. It changes the concept of majority rules to the influencers rule. Thus a smaller part of the whole now has the biggest say and the myth is that this power aligns with race, religion or personal preferences. Social media has perverted the genuine need for minority opinions to be heard to a new society dictated by the few who influence the airways, the internet and other media sources.

For years people have feared that government was forcing things down their throat and lying to them. Now it’s the influencers. What portion of the population is actually offended by the word Indians? Influencers make it seem like the majority and by doing so they have converted many who were neutral to THEIR belief. The public now has two groups to be concerned about. The government and the influencers and right now the more powerful group is the influencers.

Changing the name of a sports team isn’t a big deal. Changing it because someone wants to show their power over the world though their ability to influence change, now that’s a big deal. Going forward, all attempts to change established norms need to be reviewed to see if it’s about the actual change or the change driver’s need to prove their power of persuasion over the world.

Whether readers on this site like it or not, influencers are constantly commenting to sway the public opinion of the people on this site. Most are genuine comments but not all. The influencers are paid to have fans believe what their bosses want the public to believe on all sports topics. If you read opinions not backed by facts, call out the writer to prove what they are saying rather than believing it on the surface. It makes the influencers earn their money and most times they won’t bother with the support documentation.

KD – Did you know that even in the sports writing world, several people are paid JUST to write about things that THEY find offensive with the goal of garnering enough attention to make others feel offended as well.

For instance Yahoo/AOL’ has a columnist that is paid to write about just gender and race issues. She is the one that’s leading the attack on Tony Romo for a completely harmless, silly bit of humor. If there’s nothing for people to be offended about, she would be out of a job. So as the saying goes, if there’s no controversy to write about …. create a controversy. That’s exactly what she did.

And you’re right about this site. I have a stalker here using multiple accounts and he’s doing everything he can to “cancel” me because I briefly mention the word “prayers” in a few threads. It’s absolutely absurd how, even with the great mute feature we now have available, that people are still trying to shove their opinions down everyone’s throat and won’t stop until they get what they want which is to silence those with differing opinions.

FPG – The manipulation of opinion has existed for years. Subliminal advertising and other subtle techniques have fallen by the wayside to the direct approach of bullying opinions by pouncing on the naysayers.

This site is one of the best for being able to say what you think without site repercussions The Athletic is a joke because you must voice the opinion of the person assigned control of the writing for each team. Over the monster is nothing but a paid influencer site. I like Rumors because censorship is not exercised with regard to pointing out flaws in an organization or individual.

Freedom of speech found in the form of allowing opposing opinions to coexist on a site is good. Stalkers are commonplace unfortunately but the mute feature has really changed the stress level of participation by eliminating the ignorant stalkers that you referenced. Also, several have crossed lines that they shouldn’t have crossed and got banned which is yet another feature I like about the site. Yes, their quest to stalk is great enough that they are willing to pay to rejoin under a new name to give specific individuals insults but with the mute feature that issue is eliminated the second the new id shows up.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing similar bad behavior like I do.
