The Marlins continue to be in the market for a catching upgrade, reports the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson. Skipper Don Mattingly more or less confirmed that’ll be a priority this winter, responding to questions about the team’s incumbent catching situation, noting that “It’s an area we’re looking at. It’s fairly safe to say it was some kind of message when we grabbed two catchers at the trade deadline.”
Mattingly’s rather plain assessment doesn’t bode well for the team’s current group of catchers, who combined for a wRC+ of 57 that ranked third-worst in all of baseball. Things weren’t much brighter on the defensive side of things either, as the unit posted -6 DRS.
Miami’s starting catcher, Jorge Alfaro, may find himself in the most trouble after posting -9 DRS and a 69 OPS+ over the past two seasons. The former Rangers and Phillies prospect has showed mixed progress in his tenure as a Marlin, as he has incrementally improved his year-over-year hard-hit rate and flashed a cannon that resulted in a 43% caught stealing rate. Still, Alfaro has regularly posted strikeout rates above 30%, has been walking less every year since 2018, and undid some of his defensive good by allowing a league-high 13 passed balls in 2021.
Further working against Alfaro is his rising salary through arbitration, for which he is eligible a second time this offseason. As a smaller market team, Miami is unlikely to dedicate a portion of its payroll to a player who is establishing a pattern of underperformance; a non-tender of Alfaro this offseason has seemed likely for quite some time.
With Alfaro’s stock dipping and #2 catcher Sandy Leon unlikely to be retained as well, the Marlins have playing time to spare at the position. In-house candidates include the aforementioned deadline pickups: Alex Jackson and Payton Henry. The former wasn’t able to replicate his most recent 1.060 OPS Triple-A performance while the latter couldn’t build on a more modest .741 OPS performance across the minors last year. Another Miami catcher, Nick Fortes, impressed offensively in a 14-game debut but also carries a limited track record of offensive prowess in the minors.
General manager Kim Ng and CEO Derek Jeter suggested last week the club anticipated dipping into the free agent market to address the team’s lackluster offense. As MLBTR’s Darragh McDonald recently explored, however, the upcoming offseason offers a very thin crop of options behind the dish.
That could suggest Miami’s more likely to turn to the trade market to add help from outside the organization. The Fish had some discussions with the Cubs regarding Willson Contreras last offseason, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the sides revisited those talks this winter with Chicago having torn down the big league roster substantially in recent months. Contreras is only one season away from free agency, though, and it’s arguable the Miami front office should focus more on longer-term options coming off a 67-95 campaign.
Turning to some other plausible trade candidates, teams figure to call the Diamondbacks regarding Carson Kelly and the Pirates about Jacob Stallings this winter, although it’s not clear either player will be made available. Both Arizona and Pittsburgh look hard-pressed to contend in 2022, but there’s no indication either of Kelly or Stallings proved attainable at this past summer’s trade deadline.
Kelly got off to a scorching start to the year before he fractured his wrist on a hit-by-pitch in mid-June. His production absolutely cratered upon his return, with the injury seemingly having a lingering impact on his power. It’d be relatively easy for Miami (or any other club) to talk themselves into Kelly regaining his early-season form after an offseason to recover, although the D-Backs’ front office may prefer to hang onto Kelly into next season in anticipation of a bounceback themselves. He’s entering his second of four years of arbitration eligibility and will be entitled to a raise on this season’s $1.7MM salary.
Stallings has been one of the game’s most reliable defensive catchers for the past few seasons. The 31-year-old rather remarkably didn’t commit a single passed ball in 892 innings last season (which would make for a marked change from Alfaro’s receiving issues). He also hit at a solid level for a catcher (.246/.335/.369 over 427 plate appearances). That’d make him an appealing trade target, but Stallings comes with an additional three seasons of arbitration control himself and Pittsburgh hasn’t seem inclined to move him in the past.
The Fish could also look into more creative trade possibilities. The Blue Jays have a glut of young catchers at or near the big league level; the Twins could make Mitch Garver available to open more regular playing time for Ryan Jeffers; the Mariners might listen on one of Tom Murphy or Luis Torrens with prospect Cal Raleigh at the big league level. It seems highly likely the Marlins will make some form of addition behind the plate, with Mattingly’s assessment of the situation only lending further credence to the idea of a forthcoming shakeup at the position.

i mean right now, no one cares. maybe not even later for that matter.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
I can’t believe the Marlins traded Adam Duvall straight up for Alex Jackson. I know a lot of people don’t like Duvall because of his lack of on base skills but he has still been extremely productive this season. With runners on base his hitting damn near .330 and over 25 of his 38 home runs. Alex Jackson is just flat out terrible. He will never materialize into anything. Is it just me or is trading a guy with good defense who is a threat to lead the league in both home runs and RBI’s straight up for Alex Jackson a bit lopsided in the Braves favor?
mlb1225
Yeah, I really like Adam Duvall. I’ll take a league average hitter who gives you 30 home runs a year with 15 or more DRS on average in both corner outfield positions. Sneaky fast too. Even a bit faster than the stolen base leader, Starling Marte.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
The worst part about it for the Marlins is I’m pretty sure they traded Duvall looking at it as the Braves were only getting a 2 month rental. I can almost guarantee though that the Braves will end up signing Duvall to a relatively modest multi-year deal. Alex Jackson will be doing nothing on their team and the fans are going to have to watch Duvall hit Homer after homer off them for years to come. It’s going to piss them off. Even though he will likely have to sign a new contract the Marlins fans are always going to look at it like their GM just gave Duvall away for nothing to a division rival nonetheless.
8ManLineupNoPitcherNoDH
there’s no “a bit” about it. jeter and company got fleeced. duvall the first player to switch teams during the season and lead the league in RBIs
DarkSide830
they got fleeced in trading away a rental? that doesnt make any sense.
Rayforever21
Sure they got fleeced, another thing for all of you boys and girls out there, the Braves got an option for 2022 on Duvall, he is NOT a free agent, the Braves could pay 3 million buyout or pay 7 retaining the all or nothing and nice defense big guy. With a DH in the NL almost in place beyond 2022, I think Duvall LF, Acuña CF, Soler RF with Ozuna perhaps coming back, if not, then Pache could be nice.
Regarding the fish they need to get either Gomes or trade for either Stallings or Carson… but they won’t be cheap or easy to get.
The Mets "Missed WAR"
@Rayforever: I’m not 100% on this but I believe the Duvall option is a mutual option. The Braves will pick up their end but Duvall could turn his down and still get $4 million and then become a free agent. He will probably turn it down because it only gives him a net $3 million next season to keep it. He really does love playing for the Braves though so it wouldn’t totally shock me if he picks it up. My guess is the Braves pick up their end of the option, Duvall turns his down and just takes the $4 million to become a free agent and then the Braves and Duvall work out a 1 or 2 year deal in the $10 million AAV range. Maybe 3 years. Mutual options are rarely picked up by both parties. For Duvall to pick up his end of the option he would either REALLY want to be a Brave and help them save payroll or believe that the free agent market would only pay him a 1-year $3 million deal. That’s because he gets the other $4 million even if he decides to leave anyway. I hope he picks up his end of the option or I hope I’m wrong and it’s just a team option and not a mutual option. I think both of those things are probably unlikely though. Regardless, I do still believe the Braves will sign Duvall at least through next season if not for season(s) after that. And yes, trading rentals can be bad if you trade them within the division and they end up re-signing. Especially if they are players who end up being underpaid for their production as Duvall is this year. It does make some sense as to why the Marlins wanted to trade Duvall though. They didn’t want to pay him $4 million next season while he plays for another team. That could happen to the Braves, too but I think the Braves will bring back both Duvall and Freddie Freeman.
Rayforever21
Cool reply @themetsmissedwar, I totally agree.
rockofloveusa
Jorge Alfaro, is far worst defense.
marlins pitching would been far worst without Alex Jackson .
the lost only cost marlins 2 win cause Alex Jackson not hitting.
Jorge Alfaro, would cost marlins 7 losses . going by mlb stat if he stay behind plate when started Alex Jackson ..
but i agree with Adam Duvall s . witch people should under stand.
marlins turn down braves trade officer Duvall im the number one person wanted to keep him
jay13
At the time Duvall was traded wasn’t he in one of his downspirals…. so that didn’t help the Marlins at all. I agree they got fleeced but there wasn’t alot of teams lined up for Duvall at the deadline.
Alex Jackson was not a killer haul for Duvall and the production we all know he is capable of doing(and did). That being said, it was only a 2 month rental trade. What did you expect them to get for him, Shea Langliers.
RunDMC
Insert fun simile illustrating the vastness between A-Jax and Langeliers. A-Jax got outplayed by Kevan Smith.
despicable_you
Yankees could have used mattingly tonight!
Yankee Clipper
Mantle could’ve done better tonight……and he’s dead, in case you didn’t realize it.
Go Yankees (trailing off in somber tone….)
Gwynning's Anal Lover
I can picture a Disney movie with a Weekend at Bernies plot at Yankee Stadium staring Mantle.
Yankee Clipper
Lol… Might be hard to recognize him now though
Robertowannabe
Thinking Mantle would be looking a lot like Lew Hayward when he showed up to tell Frank Cross about the Ghosts that would be coming to see him
fred-3
How does Mattingly still have a job? Did the Marlins see his work with the Dodgers?
Yep it is
Why wouldn’t he.? He basically did what what Roberts has done with the Dodgers. Don’t bring up a 40% season World Series either.
fred-3
There’s a difference between losing in the first round and losing in the World Series to a team that likely cheated and one of the best teams ever. Also, last year counted
RunDMC
IF last year counted then Mattingly should get some credit, and at least a chance with even a modest budget. They’re busting at the seams with pitching they will only translate well in the future.
getright11
Fred, Do you know ANYTHING about playoff baseball?
dodger1958
Yeah Fred does, do you?
dodger1958
Yep it is. So if Mattingly “basically did what Roberts has done”, how many times did he take them to the World Series? Do you even know?
Isthisserious
Tucker Barnhart comes to mind with Stephenson most likely receiving more playing time. I expect him to land there if his option isn’t picked up.
DonOsbourne
I thought about this too. The Marlins could probably get Eugenio Suarez as a throw in as well. He’s a change of scenery candidate with the offensive potential they need. Just don’t ask him to play short.
Bill Kane
Game 7 of the world series against the Astros was in LA. The stros only used their sign stealing in home games. Their world series win last year comes with an *. shortened season due to pandemic footnote
aussiegiants53
Can I suggest Joey Bart again? I like him but I’m ok with trading him for some arms, Bart for Myer?
8ManLineupNoPitcherNoDH
Giants aren’t trading him
Maverick12
I’m all in for trading Bart for pitching, but it needs to be close to MLB ready
Bob Lablah
You clowns have Ronaldo Hernandez the prized prospect from the Rays who mashes and has a golden arm. He was supposed to be the future behind the dish for a Rays team thats still never drafted and developed a catcher to make it to the bigs thanks to RH going to Miami. Am I missing something?
MarlinsFella14 2
Hernandez was traded to the Red Sox, not the Marlins, so yes you missed the team he was traded to
stevewpants
Offer 2 years and some decent cash to Manny Pina, very underrated catcher, will be best value among those available.
jdgoat
Jansen and Kirk are both starting caliber catchers. If the Marlins are just giving away arms like Cimber again, I’m sure something can be worked out.
KamKid
I love the idea of a Kirk for Meyer framework. Toronto needs some starting pitching in the upper minors. Kirk can hit in the majors right now. Needs development behind the plate but you can sign a defensive backup in FA affordably. Would look more attractive from Miami’s perspective if they knew the NL DH was a sure thing.
Mjm117
Exactly! Sandy and Rogers for Jansen should get it gone.
goalieguy41
Reese Maguire
billysbballz
Gary Sanchez will be available I’m sure. There could be a deal reached with Miami for pitching or prospects I’m sure.
Mickey777
I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps they can “fix” him. A new organization, a new approach, and most of all a new chance for Sanchez might work. He can still hit a little. Unfortunately Cashman traded away so much of their minor league talent at the trade deadline to get Andrew Heaney, Joey Gallo, and a couple of months of Anthony Rizzo that throwing a prospect in with Sanchez to get a decent young pitcher seems improbable. In my opinion, Yankees top need is for a catcher. Can’t go on another season with pitchers afraid to throw a breaking pitch in the dirt when there’s a runner on base.
mlbnyyfan
Unfortunately I would be shocked if Sanchez is traded. Getting rid of Sanchez priority number one. Number two platoon Wade and Velasquez until Volpe is ready. Number 3 Bring back Rizzo. Number 4 The Yankees may need to trade the following players Ushela and Voit. IMO trade Stanton and Judge value couldn’t be any higher right now trade them. Look at Boston thriving getting rid of Betts. Hicks will be back hopefully the switch hitter will help balance the lineup. A new catcher, platoon at SS, Hicks back, Rizzo a full year. The Yankees desperately need a legitimate lead off hitter. I hope that can be Wade if not FIND SOMEONE ELSE!!!! It’s a off season that changes need to be made drastic changes. The decade this has been unacceptable The Yankees are the Yankees we shouldn’t be thrilled with a WC game most years. Fire Boone and bring back Showalter. That won’t happen though because the Yankees for some reason are all about analytics. Anyway 130 days until Pitchers and catchers minus Sanchez return.
LordD99
Finding a replacement catcher won’t be easy. The catching situation across MLB is mostly abysmal.
mlbnyyfan
I would be fine if Yankees get another back up. New catcher and Higgy play 80 games each.
RunDMC
It is. Not saying he’s the best option, but with d’Arnaud in a 2 year extension & Langeliers possibly debuting 2022 (he was Braves 2021 position prospect of the year), William Contreras has no home. He needs to get better defensively, but he has offensive potential. ATL needs some pitching depth at mid to lower levels with most being at AAA. MIA has a lot to spare at most levels. These 2 have hooked up before, and wasn’t Ng and AA in LAD front office at same time?
rangers92
They have good pitching depth. FA market is thin on catchers.
Trade a pitcher or 2 for MJ Melendez or Joey Bart.
Faith in the Padres
Padres.
Trade campusano for pitching. They have nola at catcher and caratini as a backup for next year. Possibly upgrade catcher in 2023 once myers is off the books and hosmers price tag goes down to 13 mill a year.
stretch123
Miami should bring in a proven vet at catcher.. A guy like Tucker Barnhart, Christian Vasquez or Mitch Garver. Someone who can handle the pitching staff and isn’t an automatic out at the dish.
Besides this, I hope Miami is aggressive in FA and goes out and signs at least two bats. I personally like Avi Garcia or Mark Canha for a corner OF spot.
I’d also like to see them bring in a versatile vet such as Chris Taylor or trade for a guy like Ketal Marte. If can get a C thru FA, see if Pittsburgh would bite on a Meyer/Bleday package for Reynolds.
mlb1225
If the Marlins want Stallings, they better be willing to part with one of their top pitching prospects plus like Bleday.
Mjm117
Agreed!
Marlins need to give up one of Meyers or Cabrera, bleday, Jazz, and one of Sandy or Trevor, as well as a replacement for Stallings in Joe Mack PLUS pay 50% of all players salary arb years for the juggernaut that is Stallings.
stretch123
One of their better pitching prospects plus Bleday would be the framework for Bryan Reynolds, not Stallings. There are comparable catchers out there that can get the job done without costing that prospect capital. Barnhart, Gomes and even the underrated Manny Pina come to mind.
Cosmo2
C’mon. Stallings is good, but he’s not THAT good. Plus he’s like 32 years old.
MarlinsFanBase
Wow, so when did Stallings have Realmuto value?
JohhnyBets67
If the Pirates got Bleday straight up for Stallings you’d have to consider that a W.
MarlinsFanBase
The Marlins aren’t giving up Bleday for Stallings. Again, when did Stallings start to have Realmuto value?
bighiggy
Wonser if they would take someone like knizer and Paul dejong for say brian Anderson and Shawn morriando? I think that’s how it’s spelled.
MarlinsFanBase
Not likely.
Bob333
Maybe theycan trade Don Mattingly to the Phillies to be with his son the new Farm Director
for Andrew Knapp C and Ramon Rosso P and Didi Gregorius ss
UKPhil
I would love to see Stallings catching the Marlins staff. At times this season watching Alfaro behind the plate made me feel unwell.
I wouldn’t be shocked if one of Fortes, Henry, or Jackson matured into a good catcher. I wouldn’t be surprised if none of them did
