The Padres have outrighted five players off their 40-man roster after they went unclaimed on waivers, according to the transactions page at MLB.com. Catcher Webster Rivas, outfielder Brian O’Grady, infielder Ivan Castillo, right-hander Miguel Diaz and left-hander Daniel Camarena have all been removed from the roster. All five are now eligible to become free agents.
The 26-year-old Diaz has the most major league experience of the bunch, having thrown 108 2/3 innings for the Padres over four different seasons from 2017 to 2021. In 2021, he logged 42 innings with an ERA of 3.64, healthy 26.7% strikeout rate but a high walk rate of 11%.
Camarena, turning 29 next month, only got into six games this season but cemented himself a place in Slam Diego lore by hitting a grand slam off Max Scherzer in July. His ERA at the big league level was 9.64, but in a small sample size of just 9 1/3 innings. In 83 1/3 Triple-A innings, his ERA was a much more palatable 4.75, despite a low strikeout rate of 16.9%.
Rivas, 31, got 77 plate appearances for the Friars this year and slashed .221/.303/.338 for a wRC+ of 80. His Triple-A numbers were a smidge better, as he hit .252/.339/.393 for a wRC+ of 83 over 186 plate appearances.
The 29-year-old O’Grady got 61 MLB plate appearances with a palty line of .157/.267/.333, but his Triple-A numbers were much better. Over 329 plate appearances for the Chihuahuas this year, he hit .281/.366/.547 for a wRC+ of 120.
Castillo, 26, only got four MLB plate appearances this season. At Triple-A, he got to the plate 435 times and hit .287/.326/.366 for a wRC+ of 73.
When factoring in these outrights, as well as players heading into free agency and players coming off the 60-day IL, the 40-man roster will be sitting at 38 when the offseason begins, in the estimation of Jason Martinez and Roster Resource. But the Padres have club options on Pierce Johnson and Craig Stammen that could get that number back up to 40, as well as mutual options with Jake Marisnick and Mark Melancon.

Step 1 of the Dan Camarena/Yankees reunion has come to fruition
Not a clever name
Sorry to break this to you but while Camarena is heading back to NY it won’t be to the bronx. He is the new PBO for the Mets.

Isn’t Brian O’Grady the son of Rosie O’Grady – a regular old-fashioned gal ?
I believe his brother is Brady O’Grady, but I don’t remember which organization he is with…..
Bart Harley Jarvis
nent,
In all seriousness, I believe I went to high school in NE Philadelphia in the 70s with Brian O’Grady’s dad. I’m fairly certain his name is Kevin, but family and friends may have called him Rosie.

What about his mom, Rosie ?

A woman named Roosevelt, seriously?

I was a St. Joe Prep guy but long before your time. Ryan wasn’t even around when I graduated the Prep in ’63.
I believe one of my classmates taught at Ryan (Lou Fante). Could be wrong about that. Might have been Wood.
Anyway, hope the Phillies find a way to be a whole lot better in 2022. Tough row to hoe because the Braves are not only good, but young. Plus they get Acuna and Soroka back next year.

Yes, Mr. Fante taught math.

Brian O’grady for Miguel andujar a fair challenge for challenge trade Yankees and Padres should make !

Bob Melvin sure gets down to work quickly.

Hopefully, he is included in roster decisions

He does have vast experience (2 days) as Pads skipper, so I’m sure he’s making all the decisions already

Exercising the mutual option may make sense for both Padres and Melancon. I understand it’s $5M-$7M or $1M buyout.

When was the last time both sides accepted a mutual option? Jason Giambi 10 years ago?

Aramis Ramirez before the 2015 season I believe

Weird wrinkle to this is he reportedly took less money to come to SD because he wanted to be on a competitor and then they didn’t “compete” so he might want to get get paid somewhere else.

I’m guessing that Tommy Pham is still on the 40-man roster until after the World Series, right?
It will be good riddance with Pham.
I’m sure that there are quite a few Padre front-office people hoping that Eric Hosmer and Will Meyers will get non-baseball injuries in the offseason so that they can get out of the contracts. I know that was my thought when Tommy Pham got stabbed at a strip club yet AJ Preller failed to non-tender him. Too bad he didn’t go take a dune buggy out to the desert like Danny Frisella. That would have taken all the choice away from Preller.

What is it that all you casuals who keep asking “WhY hAvEn’T tHe PaDrEs GoTtEn RiD oF tOmMy PhAm YeT !?” expect the FO to do? Preemptively release the guy? Calm down.
VegasSDfan
Pham was about a what -2 war? Man he played bad for us.
Hosmer is possibly the worst first baseman in baseball.. He also hits for about a 3rd of the season.
Meyers would be decent as a 4th outfielder for 5 million a year.
Could we just buyout Hosmer? Offer him a lump sum so we can release him.
dvmin98
What we should do with Hosmer is tell him we are going to dump you. So, we want to extend you 2 years at $5ook each. Extend him, then his AAV drops from $20 million to like $15 million. He gets and extra $1 million and everyone is happy.
Faith in the Padres
First, no on the extension.
Second, Hosmer is on a 4 year 60 mill contract now. He’s making 21 mill total in 2022 but 2023 2024 2025 he makes 13 mill a year. That averages out to 15 mill over the next 4 years.

@Faith in the Padres He’s completely worthless even at that AAV.

@dvmin98 Think he’s more likely to just let them release him.

Tommy Pham is a free agent. I seriously doubt that he will be back.

Padres need to find a prospect that the Cubs like (but not CJ Abrams) to entice a swap of Wil Myers for Kyle Hendricks with the Padres prospect as the bait. The salaries are close enough.

Kind of like taking on Chase Headley’s contract to get Brian Mitchell?
Note to myself: I did not call him “Chase Headcase.”

Pads Fans/Koamalu/Websoulsurfer/YourDaddy/whatever he is calling himself these days is about to come and try to prove to you that Wil Myers is actually a good contract.
Steve Garvey's Son
Remove. Didn’t you used to be called Egon Spengler? I don’t know why you have such an obsession with commenters allegedly changing their name. Who cares? People are allowed to change their name. You’re allowed to do it too. And based on your name, I think it might be a good idea.

@Steve Garvey’s Son Egon Spengler was you.

The Padres should trade Hosmer to the A’s for Olson and eat some of Hosmer’s money. Olson had a 5.8 War last year as is signed modestly through 2024. They could add a mid-level prospect if needed.
Faith in the Padres
No thanks. Itd cost a lot of prospect capital to go out and acquire Olson while unloading Hosmer.
They do need to get a platoon partner for Hosmer against lefties.
They could opt to put Myers at 1st against lefties and Marsinick in the OF if he sticks around.
Or they could just attach prospects and other players to unload Hosmer and sign someone like Kyle Schwarber to man 1st. I don’t see that happening.
Deleted Userrr
@Faith in the Padres Myers can only play well if you put him at just one position.
CNichols
A’s will never do that, they can’t stomach any of the salary. Taking on salary is the opposite of what the A’s do, they’re about to unload salary.
Deleted Userrr
@dmd74 The A’s will never do that. You can’t just dump your bad, overpaid players in trades for good players. It doesn’t work that way. Unless you are trading with AJ Preller or Brodie Van Wagenen.

Doesn’t appear to be any room in the inn for JD Davis (Mets). He’s not a good 3B, and attempts to play him in the Of were short lived. Should be easy to acquire, and so long as Padres are stuck with Hosmer, a platoon of Hosmer/Davis at 1B could produce a combined 30 HR and 100 RBIs.
“No room in the inn.” Could apply to Jurickson Profar. At approximately $7 million per year due this year and next, he’d be the perfect target for my hometown Phillies to pursue for their vacancy in CF. Note, CBP is a lot smaller that Petco, so playing CF in Philly ought not be a problem for Profar. Maybe Padres take a shot on failed (At least, thus far) overall #1 pick, Mickey Moniak? Perhaps a return to SoCal will rekindle Moniak’s pedigree?
Lastly Padre fans, pray for good health with your starting pitchers. Injuries to that group, more than anything, defined the demise of your 2021 season after a most promising start. Remember, when those guys were healthy, you were something like 15 games over .500 but finished with just, what was it, 73 wins?
Brew’88
They were up to 20 games over .500, and ended up with 79 wins
I’ve always thought a Hosmer/Myers platoon could work, given they are likely stuck with their contracts, as it would generate some competition. But they didn’t do that in 21, instead they often moved Cronenworth/Profar to first, especially after signing Adam Frazier.
They’re going into 22 with a lot of health issues with their hurlers (Lamet, Paddack, Morejon, Clevenger, several important RPs, etc…), so there’s a need to bring in a few stable arms, One way or another there will be a void in the OF so they need to fill that…CJ Abrams may force some interesting decisions. OF Robert Hassell won’t be ready until 2023.
