Braves Place Adrianza On Postseason Paternity List, Activate Camargo

By James Hicks | November 2, 2021 at 11:43am CDT

Per a Tuesday morning press release, the Braves have placed utilityman Ehire Adrianza on the postseason paternity list and activated infielder Johan Camargo ahead of tonight’s World Series Game 6. MLB rules require that Adrianza spend a minimum of one day and a maximum of three on the paternity list, though the latter will not come into play with the season set to conclude in less than 48 hours. Both players are switch hitters capable of offering serviceable defense at multiple positions.

While neither would be likely to see game action with the series shifting back to an AL park, the move represents a marginal downgrade for the Braves, who had used Adrianza as their top pinch-hitting option in the NLCS (when Jorge Soler was sidelined following a positive COVID test) and a secondary option in the World Series. Though he’s hitless in two at bats against the Astros,  Adrianza did deliver a crucial two-out double ahead of Eddie Rosario’s game-deciding three-run homer in the fourth inning of Game 6 of the NLCS. Camargo, who had been on the Braves’ NLCS roster, is hitless in four trips to the plate so far this postseason.

With time at six positions in 2021 in something of a super-utility role, Adrianza also would have likely represented a top option at a number of positions in the event of an injury. He amassed a .247/.327/.401 across 209 plate appearances in his first season in Atlanta — all of which slightly exceeded his career averages — as he helped to bridge the gap that arose following Ronald Acuña Jr.’s season-ending injury and Marcell Ozuna’s season-ending legal troubles.

Should such a need arise, it may now fall to Camargo, who slashed .272/.349/.457 across 524 plate appearances as the Braves’ primary third baseman during the 2018 season. The 2019 arrival of Josh Donaldson and subsequent emergence of Austin Riley have largely rendered Camargo surplus to requirements in Atlanta, however. He’s struggled mightily since his breakout 2018, slashing a combined .212/.260/.361 (good for a dismal 58 OPS+), and has recorded a meager two walks and zero hits in 18 big-league plate appearances in 2021.

Camargo has mashed in Triple-A (.958 OPS in 436 PAs this year), however, suggesting his struggles with the parent club may be attributable to a small sample size and irregular playing time. He’s also been a significantly better hitter against lefties than righties, posting an .833 OPS hitting from the right side against .700 from the left, but the Braves are still likelier to turn to mid-season pickup Orlando Arcia should a pinch-hitting situation unexpectedly arise.

Still, Camargo does replace some of Adrianza’s positional versatility, potentially enabling Braves’ manager Brian Snitker to pinch-run for a starter in a late-game situation (speedster Terrance Gore is on the roster) without sacrificing too much defensively. All in all, the move is unlikely to amount to much with the DH in play from Game 6 (and a possible Game 7) of the World Series, but it is possible Camargo may be asked to play a role.

I’m here for the “lazy Camargo” comments. Wish best of health to the Adrianzas! Can’t imagine the pressure of having to missing this, but hope all are well.

Astros actually hit lefties really well and Fried hasn’t been great his past couple starts. He might be due for a good one but against the Stros I would probably be more confident in Anderson tomorrow if necessary. He was super dominant his last start and Snit took him out early to make sure he would be well rested in the event of a game 7. I bet Adrianza is low key mad at his wife. Why couldn’t she just wait a couple more days! J/k.

I’m not sure but I literally don’t think I can post a comment without actually using the words literally or actually at least literally once. I am super sure that people are keeping track of this but actually there isn’t much else to do so I think I’m safe from the evildoers hiding behind that door like a cat literally watching a grasshopper or something. When I was in puberty I literally had pimples the size of corn kernals, or is it spelled kernels? Actually I’m not sure, but spellcheck is telling me it’s literally kernels. Anyway, this is what actually happens when you close a door, another one literally opens.

Super dominant? He didn’t give up a hit for 5 inn, but I wouldn’t call what Anderson did “SUPER dominant.”

But he’s been consistent. In the postseason, he’s 4-0 with a sub 1.50 ERA.

Camargo may- or may not- be lazy, but he is definitely terrible. It’s an AL park the rest of the way though, so I’m not too stressed about him sitting on the bench. I just hope this is Camargo’s Atlanta farewell.

They said after the World Series is over. They do it around that same time every year. It might be kind of a respect thing so they don’t divert too much attention from the teams in the World Series. Plus some guys could still really boost their free agent value in the next game or 2 if they really go off and win it for their teams. Correa and Freeman are 2 of the top free agents. A couple of 3 homer games could earn them a few extra million over the course of a long term deal easily.

I think the World Series is going to be over after Wednesday at the latest, but it actually might be after today, since today is literally the day before Wednesday and there are actually games scheduled for today and tomorrow, but we won’t know if there will be a game tomorrow until tonight’s game is played, and not until it’s finished for sure. They were saying that Correa is having an issue with his cornea but I’m actually not sure if it’s his left eye, his right eye, or his third eye. Come to think of it, I think maybe he can’t see out of his third eye during the game because it’s covered up with his hat, unless he’s wearing a helmet.

This is the worst news I’ve heard since Charlie Morton broke his leg for the Braves. Hopefully Camargo doesn’t play. Arcia is fully capable of striking out just like Camargo has done. I would give Terrence Gore any at bat before Camargo. At least Terrence can lay a bunt down. I still think the Braves win tonight without Camargo contributing.

I really wish these players would use their brains before their libidos when it comes time to make babies. I mean maybe Adrianza wasn’t expecting his team to literally be in the World Series right now but couldn’t he have maybe waited a week or something? Or who knows, maybe the baby is due early or something. I literally do not have access to the information that would tell us when the new Adrianza was conceived. Or is it concieved? I forget, but I’m sure somebody will correct me or something. I bet there are some old school guys out there who say he should stay with his team no matter what but everybody is soft now and you actually can’t fault a guy for wanting to be there to say hi to his newborn. I wonder if it’s a boy or a girl? Maybe it’s non-binary but nobody knows yet. Either way, I wish Adrianza all the best, I think he will be a good daddy because he handles everything so well or something.

I didn’t realize Sean Kazmar was a minor league free agent. Would have been a nice gesture to move Charlie to the 60 day and bring him up for a game. He’s getting a ring anyway. Don’t know what happened to Camargo, but I’m ready for him to be non-tendered.

So is Jason kipnis, 908 ops, might translate to 750 in the majors but not on 40 man roster so the braves can’t recall kipnis. if kazmar isn’t on the 40 man roster they can’t recall him either.

Line up for tonight is Rosario, Soler, Freeman, Riley, Duvall, Pederson, Albies, d’Arnaud, Swanson. It’s about time that Ozzie was moved down. This lineup is the best for securing the championship.. Screw game 7, Braves are bringing it home tonight.

@other Fred. After watching the experts predictions for the playoffs on a couple of websites I’ve determined in the end the games have to be played. Injuries will happen as well as bad umpiring and of course the occasional players making errors or bloop hits. The “experts” opinions really seem not much better than a few commenters who actually seem to closely follow baseball. The only difference is the “experts” who work on baseball media sites actually get paid.

Remember Braves Country, we weren’t good enough to be here. Brewers Pitching was too much, Dodgers are too strong. Houston’s lineup will be too much for our pitching. Give these players their just do. All these other teams had injuries and don’t get me started on ours Acuna, Travis, Ozuna, Soroka, heck Morton had his leg broke. This Title means the World to Braves country. Put some respect on the A!
