Mets Still Targeting David Stearns After His Brewers Contract Ends

By Mark Polishuk | November 11, 2021 at 1:15pm CDT

1:15PM: Stearns is “happily employed” with the Brewers, he told MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link).  Stearns also declined to clarify how many years or possible years may remain on his Brewers contract.

8:14AM: The Mets have twice been denied in their attempts to interview David Stearns about their president of baseball operations job, as Brewers owner Mark Attanasio declined the Mets’ requests both last season and earlier this offseason.  However, the Mets are seemingly prepared to simply wait the Brewers out, as The Athletic’s Tim Britton, Britt Ghiroli, and Ken Rosenthal report that New York will approach Stearns about their front office vacancy next winter, when his contract with the Brewers may or may not be up.

In the interim, the Mets’ search has been focused on assistant general manager types, who would become the club’s GM in 2022.  (Former Nationals AGM Adam Cromie has recently emerged as a favorite for the job.)  Should the Mets’ plan to land Stearns come to fruition, Cromie or whomever ends up in the GM role would then become the ops department’s chief lieutenant to Stearns, who would carry the official PBO title and sit at the top of the Amazins’ decision-making pyramid.

It would make for an unusual dynamic for at least one season in the team’s front office, not that there has been much normalcy associated with the Mets’ very public search to date.  Several potential candidates have already declined interviews with the Mets, quite likely because of the associated uncertainty.  Looking it from the perspective of an assistant GM, if you’re comfortable with your current team, why take the risk of accepting what might be a one-year job, should Stearns (or another incoming boss that you aren’t familiar with) decides that they want their own handpicked GM as their top lieutenant?

Waiting for Stearns also carries its own set of challenges for the Mets.  “Stearns has serious interest in the position,” Britton/Ghiroli/Rosenthal write, which isn’t really surprising given that Stearns grew up as a Mets fan in New York and even interned in the club’s front office in 2008.  It could be that some unofficial back-channel communication may have already taken place between the two sides, though Stearns’ feelings about the job could change if and when he has a formal interview with team officials.  (It can also be assumed that Attanasio would likely be on the lookout for any sort of early talks of any kind between Stearns and the Mets, should he feel tampering is taking place.)

Stearns has also enjoyed a lot of success in Milwaukee, and could prefer to remain with the Brewers on another contract extension, or perhaps even investigate a potential job opening with another team besides the Brewers or Mets.  Plus, Stearns’ contractual situation is a little unclear.  The Mets reportedly believe Stearns will be available next winter, though reports have suggested some type of vesting option could be in place for Stearns to remain with in Milwaukee through the 2023 season.  If this option does exist and it vests, the Mets would find themselves putting their front office plans on hold for yet another season — assuming Stearns would remain at the top of their list, and another executive didn’t emerge in the interim.

It seems a very Mets thing to do to leave your true gm/pbo slot open for… one? Two? Three? Unknown? number of years because there’s a chance a guy might become available at some unknown time, and then you can try to interview him and see if he can be convinced to going the circus.

No, they did NOT take him from Tampa Bay.

Either way…what point are you making? Both were hired and given…PROMOTIONS. The Brewers didn’t sit around and wait 3 years to hire someone hoping they could poach another teams PBO.

But when all the other Executives turned the Mets down, I stopped worrying. I thought they’d get Stearns or Arnold this year…but neither wanted to leave…for whatever reasons. Probably because it’s a screwed-up leadership group with Alderson and Cohen, but regardless, Stearns was reportedly not ready to move on and Arnold just turned them down for whatever reason. So hard to see what’ll change next season…unless they win a WS.

And yet those two contracts combined pale in comparison to the one given to Lindor. Sterns has them in playoffs last four years in a row and positioned again for 2022. Each year the push into the playoffs goes a bit deeper. He’s doing fine.

Both were good signings at the time. JBJ was a guy who’d never had a year below 2 WAR and had average over 3 WAR per season for the last…6 or 7 years.

Yelich was 27 and slashed .327/.415/.631 with a 1.041 OPS the previous two seasons…and it was Attanasio that pushed to extend him. But that was ALSO a team friendly deal.

Seems kinda disingenuous to take the two deals that worked out worst for a GM and say, ‘this guy signed these two players…why would you want him?’

He’s also built and developed the best young pitching talent in the league in Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Houser, Small and Ashby, traded for Adames this past year…adding a power hitting SS who can play very good defense,

More important than just picking individual talent that he’s acquired…LIKE those two monster years of Yelich for 4 prospects who’ve done nothing, he came in and made the Brewers competitive WHILE they were rebuilding. The Brewers are JUST NOW getting to their window where they’re supposed to be competitive.

In short…go look at the actual moves Stearns had made if you want to understand why he’s sought after. He’s one of the best Executives in the game. Looking at just two contracts that ended up being bad…it’s just ignorant.

You were just a twinkle in your parents eye when Buckner gifted the Mets their most recent ring. TOP GUN was the #1 film that year — and it finally gets a sequel next year, so who knows? Mets are probably leaking this to justify them failing twice to hire a POBO. If the Brewers extend Stearns contract this will blow up on Mets.

Or is this Stearns leaking this to increase his leverage for a contract extension or to force his way out to join the Mets.

Not just that, but you just made filling the current void nearly impossible because nobody is going to leave his/her job to take this on a short-term basis.

Look I said it before and I’ll say it again. Stearns isn’t leaving Milwaukee for this freak show. I’m quite sure The Brewers are waiting for what everyone else is waiting for, A new CBA to see exactly how much money they’re ACTUALLY going to have. They have a whole year to see what pans out out so I’d go looking for someone more your speed than Stearns. There must be a Little League Coach somewhere since this is a Mickey Mouse Organization. Heyyyy, What about Eisner?

The Brewers denied the Mets the opportunity to talk with Stearns and others. To me, thinking logically, instead of saying “ha ha dumb Mets” or “No one wants the job”, perhaps they actually DO want the job but their current employer won’t let them out of the contract. Sounds more to me that Millwaukee would have a much tougher time trying to replace Stearns rather than Stearns not being interested. But that requires critical thinking and not being a sheep to pile on. BTW, half you support teams not nearly as successful – Pirates? Rangers? Brewers even = I mean they made the playoffs how many times ever? Phillies – longest playoff drought in the game???? Oh and the MARLINS. If ever there should be an LOL anything it should be Marlins.

Mets are the worst of all the teams you mentioned because of the City and the owner. If it were as great as you think someone would have left their job or accepted the job offered. This just shows how bad things are with your team.

If the Mets leaked this is it not tampering???… Maybe stearns team leaked this as leverage for an extension… but radio here in Wisconsin is saying he has a vesting option based on wins and playoff appearances and it has already vested IF that’s the case 2023 become a team option now so brewers could still get comp.. the Mets can’t sit and wait can they?? What gm could you hire knowing they really don’t want you there going to replace you with a president of baseball operations as soon as they can…. Doesn’t send a good message….just my opinion

Of course this is tampering. Attanasio has to be beyond livid with the Mets. Baseball better do something about this, or else SM teams will continue to be taken advantage of by the behemoths until this sport is left with just the behemoths.

I believe it’s tampering to leak out that they plan on hiring Stearns next year because they “think” his contract is up, when it’s likely that it’s not up.

I would love this to be true but it’s nothing more than bad reporting from one or two individuals speculation of a situation.

    Show me one reliable source.

Commenting so passionately over something so speculative shows how fragile some people’s minds are. Or maybe they just have nothing better to do with time.

Might as well bring Omar Minaya back as GM for one year. He’s still around, knows the organization, might be ok with going back to where he is right now after one year. And afterwards, he can interview with Stearns to see if he remains a fit moving forward beyond 2022.

Omar Minaya is the worst!! He will just come in and sign Albert Pujols to a 10 year deal and whatever other aging player is out there.

He helped bring in Luis Rojas and we all saw how that worked out for us!

“1:15PM: Stearns is “happily employed” with the Brewers, he told MLB Network’s Jon Heyman (Twitter link).  Stearns also declined to clarify how many years or possible years may remain on his Brewers contract”

So in 2022 the Mets are going to go into their 3rd offseason without a POBO, and it’s all because of a man who doesn’t want to go anywhere

    Seems about right

I really think MLB needs to get involved and force a small-market team to give a GM to the big market team, for parity of course.

It’s just not fair…. Why should small markets get all the good GMs? I think this will help the excitement in the league, and the GM has probably been paid for through the revenue sharing anyway.

Revenue is shared, why not personnel? Fair all the way around.

Maybe I’m a gluten for misery but I’m kind of interested in this development. I wonder if the Mets really can woo Stearns away.. eventually.

I think we all know Cohen can definitely offer greater financial incentives. There’s also one other aspect to this; flattery. It has to be flattering to Stearns to have the Mets organization pinning away for him. Ego can be a powerful motivator. I suppose that aspect just depends on who Stearns really is.

The more fun aspect of this is the rivalry this might create between the Brewers and Mets both on the field and between the fans. I love a good rivalry between teams.

mets are waiting for their guy. is this such a big deal? we’ll probably never know the back-channel convos being had. he wouldn’t sabotage his current contractual situation publicly so that’s why we know as little as we do. mets fans just have to hope they snag him next year.

looks like the FO is making all the right moves (so far) even without a GM including QOs. i think they’ll be aggressive on guys like Loup and Stroman but won’t go overboard with the risks (too many years or dollars). I personally don’t think they should go for Baez. trading guys like Davis or Smith might be the smartest move to make and targeting non-QO free agents (like Bryant).
