Phillies To Hire Anirudh Kilambi As Assistant GM

By Mark Polishuk | November 11, 2021 at 2:39pm CDT

The Phillies are hiring Anirudh Kilambi as the team’s new assistant general manager, ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link).  The 27-year-old Kilambi comes to Philadelphia after working as the Rays’ assistant director of baseball research and development, and according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, Kilambi will now oversee the Phils’ research and development division.

Kilambi began interning with the Rays front office in 2015, and worked his way up to his AD role in a little over three years’ time.  In a piece from last August, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times named Kilambi as one of the many organizational figures instrumental in the Rays’ ability to find and develop a seeming unending stream of quality relief pitchers.

As evidenced by the long list of Tampa executives who have gone on to lead or work within other front offices, teams are forever curious to learn some of the Rays’ secrets.  If Kilambi can duplicate his magic in Philadelphia, it will be a particular boon to a team that has been plagued by a severe lack of reliable relief pitching in recent years.

Spankees, have great scouts, analyst, gm and when was the last time they won a ring? I think it was like 11 or 12 yrs ago? Doesn’t matter if you have great management. The Padres, Giants they all have great personal look what happened come crunch time, they couldn’t take the pressure.

Yeah, look what happened. The Padres made the postseason after 14 years in 2020. And at one point, they had the game’s number one farm team.

The Giants rebuilt their team in half the time.
Then they turned in a 100+ win season this year and almost knocked off the defending World Champions.

The Yankees, while potentially heading for a retool period, are consistently competitive. They usually make the playoffs despite being in a loaded division.

So you’re point is what exactly? That teams shouldn’t have strong front offices? You mean, like the Mets? Every team you mentioned made changes and are now in line for sustainable success. In the Yankees case, they’ve had sustainable success already. The only thing you’ve proven with your ‘point’ is that the playoffs are indeed a crap shoot.

Big Deal…the Orioles just hired the Rays visitor’s club house attendant to analyze their underwear development.

That of course was after he turned down the Mets GM job.

This could be huge in developing the pipelines needed to make the Phillies a consistent contender. Finally, they poached talent from the Rays. I couldn’t be happier about this move.

Hopefully he can research and develop a way to get Rhys Hoskins out of there.

I really don’t understand the Hoskins hate. He usually hits around 25-30% better than league average. I get that his defense can be shaky, but if he was a DH he’d be a 4-5 win player.

It’s nonsensical. His defense is tremendously frustrating, but with the DH coming, I can’t think of many I’d rather have.

Love the hire. Love that the Phillies are focused on getting what they see as the right people in the FO, but obviously it’s all wait and see.

The Muts could of had a great front office but with arrest and harassment charges that is why they did not win the division that is what a Muts fan would say.LMAO

as a Phillies fan I can only hope is better than the last brain child named Klentak they hired. we still have a long way to go to recover from his tenure. I’m not against analytics but experience is also very important.
