Yankees Designate Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor And Tyler Wade For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | November 19, 2021 at 5:42pm CDT

The Yankees announced they’ve designated Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor and Tyler Wade for assignment. The moves create roster space for the selections of prospects Oswaldo Cabrera, Ron Marinaccio, Everson Pereira, Stephen Ridings and JP Sears to the 40-man roster. That keeps all five from being selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Frazier and Wade are arbitration-eligible, but the Yankees evidently determined they weren’t going to bring either player back. It’s easy to envision both attracting interest over the coming days, and New York will ten days to explore offers.

Frazier was a middle-of-the-order presence as recently as last year, when he mashed at a .267/.394/.511 clip. That came in a small sample of 160 plate appearances during a truncated season, but it was the kind of offensive upside talent evaluators have lauded for the former #5 overall pick. While Frazier’s a limited defensive player with swing-and-miss concerns, he also flashed a tantalizing blend of raw power and plate discipline.

The 2021 season was a disaster, though. Not only did the 27-year-old’s line fall to a miserly .186/.317/.317, he didn’t play past the end of June due to recurring vertigo-like symptoms. It’s certainly not how either he or the team would’ve envisioned his time in pinstripes coming to an end.

MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projects Frazier for a modest $2.4MM salary if he were to proceed through the arbitration process. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see another team roll the dice on his upside for that affordable sum, either via trade or waiver claim. If Frazier were to clear waivers, he’d have the right to elect minor league free agency.

That’s also the case for Wade, who’s projected for an affordable $700K arb salary. The 26-year-old doesn’t bring much power potential, but he draws a fair amount of walks, runs well and can handle multiple positions. Wade is coming off a .268/.354/.323 showing in 145 plate appearances, and it’d register as a surprise if he didn’t land elsewhere in the coming days.

The Yankees swung a deal to acquire Odor from the Rangers just before the start of the 2021 season. While the left-handed hitter had some timely hits, his overall production was lackluster. Odor managed just a .202/.286/.379 mark over 361 plate appearances. The 27-year-old will be guaranteed $12MM next season, the final year of his contract. Texas remains on the hook for essentially all of that sum, so any team that acquires Odor would only owe him the league minimum salary.

Turning to the prospects involved, Ridings may be the best known. The big right-hander already made his MLB debut this past season as a COVID replacement. While he only worked five innings of relief, he looked like a potential late-game weapon. Ridings averaged 97 MPH on his fastball and generated whiffs on a massive 18.9% of his offerings. The 26-year-old also posted dominant numbers in the high minors.

Cabrera is the highest-regarded of the group, according to Baseball America. BA’s #8 organizational farmhand, Cabrera is coming off a solid .256/.311/.492 showing with 24 homers over 478 plate appearances at Double-A Somerset. He’s regarded as a high-end defensive infielder with strong bat-to-ball skills and burgeoning power.

Pereira, a lefty-hitting center fielder, was limited to 221 low minors plate appearances by injuries. The 20-year-old probably isn’t a near-term big league option, but the Yankees didn’t want to chance another team taking a shot on his upside. A highly-regarded amateur coming out of Venezuela in 2017, he raked at a .303/.398/.686 clip when healthy enough to take the field this year. Neither Sears nor Marinaccio has ever made an organizational ranking at FanGraphs or BA, but both posted strong numbers in the high minors and could be big league options in 2022.

Poor Clint. I do hope he recovers from his concussion issues. Odor no surprise. Wade a bit of a surprise.

I believe these moves, along with trading Nelson and Sands, opens up five 40-man roster spots. Frazier is the only one who could come back to haunt them, but that concussion has been a killer. Some never fully recover.

@Yankeesfan22, it looked like he made it all the way back in 2020, but I believe he aggravated the concussion very early this year diving for a ball in RF. I didn’t see anyone report it at the time, but I saw his head snap back on impact. Some team should pick him up and just DH him. The Universal DH will be good for him. DH him, limit his time in the OF. Or, in the AL, the Orioles should claim him, or maybe even his former team, the Indians.

Brain stuff is so scary. My son played his last football game a couple weeks ago. I seem to pray a bit less now that it’s hoop season.

          Oh no.
He is a senior in H.S. He has no desire to try & walk on. I did. But he & I are wired quite differently on some things. I had a hard time letting go. He isn’t.

But all the CTE stuff came out after he’d been playing for years. Scared the crap out of me though, serious. My rule was; one head or neck injury & you’re done. Thankfully, it never occurred.

But I don’t think we can separate Frazier’s up & down play & all the concussion stuff he went through. I read an interview with him. Pretty spooky, Clip. Like I said, glad my boy is done playing football, man. Again, just really grateful nothing serious ever happened.

          I get it.

I really agonized over it. Being a single parent I second guess myself all the time too. Which made it even harder. Ya know?

But he loved it. & I just couldn’t bring myself to take it away from him. I played. Been knocked out (WR/KR) completely more than once. My girlfriend is 100% convinced I have CTE.

But, he started playing flag when he was…3? (God bless the Y & Park Boards as I got tons of cheap baby sitting out of those folks.) So it was a part of his life before any facts were made known to us.

Like I keep saying. Glad it’s over.

Back when Northwestern used to routinely get blown out, at the end of games their fans used to chant:

          “That’s alright! That’s Ok!
We’re going to be your boss someday!”

It is a good school. The tuition – although high – isn’t too bad. I’m excited for him. But it’s been just he & I the whole time. So, I will certainly miss him.

Yup. She was really tall as a young kid, but I knew it would be only a matter of time before everyone caught up to her, since my wife and I are about average height.

So in the 8th grade AS game, she scored one point in the first half. And I was ‘okay’ with that, since I knew she wasn’t going NCAA Division 1 (actually, I was hoping for Princeton, but that really isn’t what Division 1 means)..

Anyway, she comes out in the 3rd quarter and scores 13 points in 6 minutes. She was playing alongside one of the best point guards in The Bronx, so that helped. After the game, I’m walking behind the nephew of an NBA HOF player. He points to my daughter and says ‘there goes the MVP’. Unfortunately, they don’t out MVPs in those games, but it’s heck of a thing to hear.

So the Yankees essentially got 1 year of James Paxson when they traded Miller, by far the best reliever in baseball on a cheap contract. Everyone thought Cashman fleeced the Cubs and Indians when those trades happened. If Torres doesn’t find his bat soon both of them will look bad in hindsight. DFAing Frazier was a mistake. Letting him go to protect potential bullpen pieces was foolish. He should be given another year. Especially after the mess the Yankees dealt with last year in their OF. He has the upside to be a solid starter in LF with a middle of the order bat. The Yankees won’t find that in FA for anywhere close to $2.7m. With Florial stumbling and being their only close to ready OF prospect that has starter potential they should have held onto him. Now he will sign with a team like Arizona and probably have a breakout season. I think it’s time for Cashman to finally go. He has given the Yankees 1 championship in 20 years. With the Cole contract he showed he learned nothing from when ARod got him bidding against himself. He had the Michaels teams when he took over and since then has done nothing but throw money at over priced free agents. His drafts has always sucked and will continue to provide a decent player every 5 years or so. When they changed the International free agent rules they lost their main pipeline for young talent. Sorry about the novel.

          Damn.

I really thought he had established himself as part of our core moving forward. Saw him play out here in ’17. Played all out which was the first thing I noticed. His “legendary bat speed” was actually apparent as opposed to hyperbole. & he was studying scouting reports (I think) between pitches. After 2020 it really seemed he had broken through.

I had high hopes for this kid. & I will freely admit it. Wade too. Though I have bern soured on him for awhile now.

Baseball Trade Values is an unmitigated joke.

John Butzer, it’s creator, is an A’s fan and has been caught multiple times, pumping values of A’s players for zero reason.

He’s also been caught changing values after trades occur to make it look as though his algorithm works.

Serious baseball fans should reject it.

I don’t particularly understand this. I believe all three are tradable, but at least one or two were worth more than a DFA, right?

Frazier, Andujar – Both top 20 prospects and both shining examples of why the Yankees need a true SS. They cannot plan on Volpe / Peraza panning out because….well, ya never know.

Hope Frazier can come back, love Odor’s drive, and glad Cashman finally bought his nudie pics back from Wade.

I would argue that none of them could be traded. The fact that they were DFA’d tells me that. If they could have been traded in an advantageous way for the Yankees and Cashman didn’t make the trade than he should be fired right now for gross malfeasance.

Again, look at the state of catching around MLB. Mr Dierkes had a “members only” article on this exact thing. I don’t know how to say it any other way; just because Yankee fans are over the top frustrated with him, in no way means Cash’ll get rid of him.

This is more an indictment catching in general as opposed to an endorsement of Phat Sancho, at this point (sadly enough). Doesn’t change the bottom line, however. Which is: Gary stays. GM’s don’t revenge-DFA guys.

No matter how much you want them too.

@mlbnyyfan my guess to your question on why it was Wade and not Andujar is because Andujar does have a history of being a very good hitter. In 2018 he had a 130 OPS+ over 149 games. Unfortunately, he hasn’t even played half a season worth of games since. I imagine they want to run him out there again and see if he can repeat 2018. Wade on the other hand has never been an above average hitter.

He is just stating the obvious. Don’t forget: he is *exactly* what Cash wanted & expected. Same thing with all the other GM’s that tried to get him.

Is he flawed? Yeah for sure! However, almost all players are.
Is he productive? Yes. He is. A lot of folks don’t care for the shape of that production. Doesn’t change the fact that he is, though.

As for Gary. This again? He puts in tons of extra work with Swanson. He played winter ball last year to work on his swing. Terrible narrative. Sanchez works hard, bro.

          So.
Looking at him as such, completely changed my perspective of him. He has a career OPS of .823 & is a lock for 40+ jacks. Excellent for a glove first guy, uh? Offensively I can see the comp. Breaks down after that, though.

          That’s a two month sample.

I’m looking at his career mark. Which entails a significantly larger body of work. I saw Trout play once. He went 0-4 with 2 K’s. Drew a walk. But got cut down trying to steal second. If I were to judge him off that, I would think he kinda stunk.
          Ya know?

Gallo is what he is, man. But it totals up to a 4+ WAR player.

War tends to overrate mediocre players. And I’m not judging Gallo off of one at bat as your example showed, I’m judging by what he did here along with the rest of his career. His flaws were amplified even more when he was traded here. He has two I repeat only TWO sac flies his whole career to date. How is that even possible ??? One of the worst hitters I’ve ever seen. Wonder if they will resign any of them after the upcoming rule 5 draft?

Letting Tyler Wade go opens up some questions about their pursuit of a SS. Obtaining a stop gap SS was coupled with the idea of having Wade as a kind of backup in case the stop gap SS was a complete disaster.

      Mickey7777:

I’ve talked with a few regular guys here often about the SS situation. Originally pining for Seager, when I saw the contract demands (which continue to rise), my opinion is neither top-tier, nor stop-gap, but a nice compromise.

Surmising we can’t trade for a SS, I’d suggest going for, in this order:

Story: Advantage of Possible 1-year pillow; and if he rebounds, he’s All-Star caliber and we can re-sign him

Baez: Great Defense, but swing and miss. Have to view him as defense first with pop, and versatile.

Semien: 2B but can play SS, great bat, 31.

All of these options provide the Yankees with substantial financial flexibility as they are much cheaper (up to half the price) and require less total years of commitment. They can then trade for Olson (won’t happen), re-sign Rizzo, still get Marte, and address a SP need if they choose (say, like DeSclafani, for argument’s sake). Seems the much better option for the club to me.

As for the “idiot” charge…well, at least I know how to spell. Glass houses, etc.

I liked Clint Fraser. I think he would produce better numbers if he was an every day player. Hopefully someone gives him that chance

No, seriously? Is this the same Clint Frazier that has been included in trades proposed by well over half the Yankee fans on this site over the past 4 years?

Wade was useful but maybe replaceable. Odor never made much sense. Frazier? Maybe they just ran out of patience, but it’s too bad. Would have liked to see him get 500 ABs

I really don’t know enough about Frazier’s physical ailments last year. If he can overcome them, he has some potential as a hitter for sure. I guess the Yankees didn’t think he was a safe enough bet to hold on to. If the universal DH happens, I think he’d fit well in that role as then he doesn’t need to risk any impact to his head from diving for balls or running in to a wall in the OF.

Wade was out of options or else I think they would have kept him. So I guess the Yanks may turn to Cabrera as a UT guy. If they don’t make a big splash with a SS signing, I wouldn’t mind seeing them sign Villar to play SS until Peraza can claim the job. Villar would then become a nice super-sub.

I never thought I’d say this but I wish they could have kept Wade. He played pretty well last year. I think he should have taken more at-bats from Odor.

The way the Yankees handled Clint Frazier kinda reminds me of how the Sox did Blake Swihart a few years ago. Dude clearly had a lot of talent but was never really given the chance to put it all together, and instead of moving him while he had potential they just kept him on hand as a depth option for long enough that it stunted his development. Sad to see.

There usually aren’t windows of opportunities for prospects. As Swihart declined in projectability for the RS, other teams are also marking him down. Everyone sees the same things we see.

I know Wade was nothing special but how is Gittens more Valuable than Wade. Why protect Gittens at least Wade plays defense and can run.

Frazier can clearly hit when healthy, but will he ever get healthy from his concussion? If the DH comes to the NL, I’m sure there’s a team that will take a chance on him. He can be stashed there until his defense improves.

The Yankees also traded a catcher Sands to Philadelphia why was that move made when it’s clear the Yankees need to say good bye to Sanchez. The Yankees desperately need to be stronger up the middle. Am I the only Yankees fan that’s done with Sanchez?

No, you’re not. It’s not that many of us aren’t sick of Sanchez’s incredible inconsistency, or terrible stretches on defense,or his complete failure to meet his potential we all saw in ‘17. It’s that we currently have zero other options. Me? I’m a trade-the-farm-for-Contreras guy. We need Contreras more than we need Olson, imho.

Now, on that note, something that does confuse me a little is that Breaux is supposed to be very much like Sanchez (lots of raw power, great cannon arm, and not-so-good defense). But, he’s closer to MLB-ready than any other catcher they have, so why not give him a shot? His defensive blocking is a little better than Sanchez’s (maybe more consistent is a better way to phrase), and he may surprise us. Instead, he’s exposed to rule 5. Just a thought.

Hindsight is always 20/20. How many top prospects have been traded for mlb talent, when prospects amounted to nothing? I would gamble that number is really high.

If Clint can get healthy, tell me he’s not right up Billy Beane’s alley! I could see Frazier clear waivers and sign as a free agent in Oakland and tear it up this year! It’s moves like this that will keep Oakland around .500 this season, even during one of their retooling seasons.

I guess the Andujar + Frazier for Soto trade must of fell apart at the last second. Next year its gonna be Andujar + 1 of Voit, Garcia, & Schmidt

What’s absolutely hilarious? Not your post. Ya know why? Because you must not have read the exact same post by every other anti-Yankee commenter 152 times in this thread.

Plus, Andujar + Frazier is an overpay for Soto – he’s so overrated.

The only one I’m slightly bothered about is Wade. Super utility with insane speed who seemed to finally be finding his way with the bat. Curious to see where he lands.

As for Frazier its time to move on. Guys has all the talent in the world up at the plate but still can’t put it together. He still has a lot of maturing to do first if he is even going to sniff his potential.

So out of all the “talent” received in the trades for Chapman and Miller the Yankees are down to hoping Gleyber rebounds. Cashman ever going to be held accountable for almost never developing major league players with an impact?

It is a shame – but I think Frazier’s days in mlb will be limited. That concussion really did a number on him. I really hope he bounces back, because there is talent there, and he has shown he can improve (runner up to gold glove and strong batting ops+ – in small samples).

Not really sure but I see Frazier becoming a star if he can finally stay healthy. For some reason I see him signing with the Phillies to play with Bryce Harper, for my favorite manager Joe Girardi.

Was just thinking about Frazier. The Mets need two starting OFers, a 4th OFer, a 5th OFer… they’re going nowhere in 2022 and Clint can slot in literally anywhere if he’s capable of playing at all.
