Fernando Tatis Jr. Undergoes Wrist Surgery

By Steve Adams | March 16, 2022 at 11:01am CDT

March 16: Tatis is undergoing surgery this morning, tweets Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune.

March 14, 2:16pm: It’s not clear precisely when Tatis suffered his injury, but he admitted today when speaking with reporters (including Jesse Rogers of ESPN) that he’d fallen off his motorcycle multiple times throughout the winter. One accident described as minor had been reported in early December; Tatis called its resultant injuries “minor scrapes,” but Jon Heyman of the MLB Network tweets that some people “close to the situation” are hypothesizing he suffered his wrist fracture at that point. As Bob Nightengale of USA Today points out, team officials were barred from speaking with or examining Tatis until last Thursday on account of the lockout.

11:29am: Tatis has a fracture in the scaphoid bone of his left wrist, tweets Cassavell. It’s possible the injury was sustained earlier in the winter (though that remains unclear), but it flared up decisively while swinging a bat recently.

11:05am: Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered a broken wrist that could require surgery, president of baseball operations A.J. Preller announced to reporters this morning (Twitter link via MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell). Surgery is a possibility for Tatis, who is expected to miss up to three months recovering from the injury.

It’s a brutal blow to the Padres, who’ll now go as much as half the season without one of the game’s brightest young stars. Tatis missed time last season with a recurring subluxation of his shoulder but nevertheless hit .282/.364/.611 with 42 home runs in just 130 games. Tatis avoided surgery for that particular ailment but will now miss substantial time with a new malady.

San Diego has plenty of infield depth, though there’s no replacing a player of Tatis’ caliber. His injury could create a more stable opportunity for former KBO star Ha-Seong Kim, who struggled in a part-time role with the Friars last year after signing a four-year, $28MM contract. Alternate options on the roster include third baseman Manny Machado, second baseman Jake Cronenworth and utilityman Jurickson Profar — all of whom have experience at shortstop in the big leagues. Twenty-one-year-old CJ Abrams is among the top prospects in all of baseball, but he’s not yet on the 40-man roster and has yet to play above Double-A. He’s in camp as a non-roster invitee, though, so he’ll get a chance to force the team’s hand.

Of course, it at least bears mention that there are a few prominent shortstops yet unsigned on the market. Both Carlos Correa and Trevor Story have been in search of new homes this winter, and were either amenable to a one-year deal that’d allow them to reenter the market next winter, the Friars could make for a previously unexpected fit. There’d be an eventual logjam, but Tatis did spend some time in the outfield last year.

That said, a Story or Correa match is an extreme long shot for multiple reasons. Both are seeking long-term arrangements, and the Padres have been looking to shed payroll as they explore trade scenarios involving Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers. Signing either free agent would require not only forfeiting a draft pick but also forking over a sizable salary. Preller has taught us time and again to never expressly rule the Padres out on virtually any pie-in-the-sky scenario, but it’s pretty difficult to imagine either Story or Correa popping up in Padres camp to step in for Tatis.

Tatis is entering the second season of a precedent-shattering 14-year, $340MM contract extension. He’s slated to earn $5MM this season and will see his salaries rise to $7MM in 2023, $11MM in 2024, $20MM in 2025-26, $25MM in 2027-28 and $36MM annually from 2029-36.

God the sport of baseball really is cursed. Right after the lockout we lose one of our most marketable players.

Tatis Jr might as well just get that shoulder operated on now as well. Hopefully this isn’t a case of got hurt in the off-season and hoped the pain just went away or he injured himself doing something foolish and tried to hide it.

It sounds exactly like a case of getting hurt in the offseason and hoping it would go away. Why else would he come to spring training as if nothing happened, only for it to flare up once he started swinging the bat?

Try reading the article and not just the headline. Its a case of getting hurt during the lockout so he couldn’t talk to the team at all.

Tatis reported the injury to the team the day he came to camp.

It’s a bit concerning that as a professional athlete you would not have it looked at soon after the injury occurred.

Has all the marks of the incredibly stupid Madison Bumgarner bike accident that wrecked his and the Giants season. When do these players realize that—for the amount of money they’re being paid—they owe it to the team and their teammates to stay away from motorcycles during their contract. So freakin’ entitled.

Similar to Ron Gant in 1994, offseason compound fracture of his leg in a motorbike accident. Atlanta promptly released him due to a notice in his contract he was not supposed to do that activity.

        • believeitornot

So he thought that there is a lockout and I can’t tell anybody? So I can’t get it looked at? Come on! Even with a lockout, he should have gotten a doctor to look at it wherever he was. He could have had the surgery three months ago. This reminds me of Sean Connery having a nagging pain in a wrist ever since he was sparring with some aikido master while preparing for Never Say Never Again. He suffered for many years before finding out his wrist was actually broken. And the aikido master that broke it? His name was Steven Seagal.

          @Pete’sView

You can’t fault any human being for wanting to live their happiest life, unless he specifically had a contractual clause. But in that case, it would make at least some portion of the contract voidable I assume.

I can’t imagine how upset the SD fans are

        • Pads Fans

Riding a motorcycle is not against the rules in the UPC. Racing a car or a motorcycle is.

What would have made his contract voidable was getting surgery without consulting a team doctor 1st. There was a lockout so not only could Tatis not consult a team doctor, he couldn’t talk to anyone connected to the team.

        • Pete'sView

Nevertheless, he showed zero concern for his teammates or the millions he takes from the Padres. Or for the SD fans.

And FSF — I don’t “fault any human for wanting to live their happiest life,” but Tatis showed he’s gluttonous and doesn’t deserve the millions. That kind of money brings happiness but also responsibility.

        • ukpadre

If that is the case that seems incredibly stupid. Players should have been able to seek medical help/advice for injuries during the lockout. To not allow this seems cruel and irresponsible.

A quick IG post would get to the SD front office.

There were certain situations that were allowed. However, I think it was if they were already in rehab or something similar. I’d have to dig it up again.

This is just a case of him being stupid and not seeking medical attention on his own to take care of it when it happened.

ukpadre — This is completely on Tatis. He goes to a doctor, they immediately call the Padres. There is absolutely no way MLB finds fault with that.

I feel like when you use the word “curse,” it means that the event was just an unlucky happenstance. This was anything but that. We have a young man with a guaranteed $340M deciding to ride a motorcycle despite, as the article says, falling off it “multiple times” during the off-season.

If baseball is cursed, it’s because its players have cursed decision-making skills.

He makes 30 plus million a year and can’t go to a doctor? That is irresponsible. There should be a clause in his contract which says he can’t ride a motorcycle or do anything dangerous. The Padres were stupid to give a monster contract when they didn’t need to.

there is one thing we are overlooking his contract could prevent him to see another doctor unless the team okays it. perfect example was the Eichel saga he wanted a surgery that buffalo said no to and then had to wait until he was traded to a team that would allow it, if he would of got the surgery still in buffalo good chance his contract would of been voided.

You don’t need a team physician to have an injury looked at. If I hurt my wrist, I would go and have it looked at in an ER or an urgent care facility and have and x-ray to see if there was damaged and if it was, have a reputable orthopedist specializing in wrist injuries look at it and fix it. I believe Mr. Tatis or any other athlete can do the same thing.

Why all the hate? Tatis did have it looked at when the motorcycle accident happened in December. He is the one that told the team that he might need surgery on the day he got to camp.

Unfortunately, the owners locked the players out so he could not talk to the team or team doctors after December 1st.

If a player has a surgery without the team doctor being involved, it voids their contract. He had no choice but to wait until the lockout was lifted and he could talk to the team.

If you want to hate on someone for this, start pointing fingers at the MLB owners.

His motorcycle crash in December caused this to happen. He probably didn’t go to hospital to get it checked out and waited until spring training to find out it’s fractured. I wish he would have gone to the hospital back in December then he would have been ready for opening day.

Why all the hate? He did have it checked out. We are learning today that he provided the team with an MRI that was taken shortly after the accident happened when he arrived at camp after the lockout was lifted.

The problem was that he couldn’t speak directly to the team of the team doctor during the lockout. He certainly could not have surgery as that would have voided his contract.

One cannot fault that deal except in hindsight. And if memory serves, it was only done because Ohtani signed with the Angels.

But as for Stanton, with the Marlins picking up a fair chunk of his remaining contract, I don’t think most Yankee fans (and certainly myself) have any problem with hanging on to him. If the Yanks had a more flexible roster, I’d be inclined to keep him barring a great deal, but his lack of flexible use and not expanding the rosters during the negotiations is why I would prefer to move him.

Just what were these criticisms of the Stanton trade? While I’ve no doubt some writers may have not liked it, it was universally welcomed in Yankee Nation. The guy was the reigning MVP at the time coming off mashing 59 HRs and was 27 YO. And even with some durability issues, he had accumulated 35.7 WAR in 8 years.

The most expensive and most often injured DH in baseball that is going into his age 32 season. The Yankees are on the hook for $179 million and the Marlins 20 million of his contract.

Yankees can no more trade Stanton without eating tens of millions of his contract, maybe $80-90 million, than the Padres can trade Hosmer without eating half his contract.

        • FSF

Smartest GM?! I think not. He consistently misses on trades and FA signings.
And, the farm system is overrated. Many of those guys that get traded flame out and never live up to all the hype.

        • FSF

He doesn’t “miss out” on anything. He makes decisions about how to best utilize the resources he’s been given. He’ gotten the team into the playoffs every single year but maybe 2 during his 20+ years as GM. I have no idea what you think he should be doing but if you genuinely think that, you are not an astute observer of the game or its overall workings.

As for the farm system and “flaming out”, that’s the majority of teams and the history of “prospects” in baseball.

As a White Sox fan, I can say trading away Tatis when he use to be an unknown is not looking bad as people use to say on this forum. Seems like Tatis can’t stay healthy enough to play a full season or even close to most of the season. Lets not use the 2020 season since it was only a 60 game season. The Padres will regret giving Tatis that long term extension.

Back when this trade happened the White Sox had Anderson blocking Tatis as the future short stop and the Sox only had to pay half of Shields contract at the time. The Sox needed a starter in their rotation since they were competing at that time. Actually, its not a big loss to the White Sox if you want to say Anderson is the White Sox’s short stop right now rather than Tatis when it’s come to production to staying healthy and salary.

Not extend, or even worse, trade one of the young superstars of the game?.. you lock up guys like this, whatever happens after that is in gods hands really. Nobody can predict future injuries. You collect as many good baseball players as possible and hope for the best. In FTJ’s case, when healthy he’s a bonfide superstar. Individual statistics mean nothing to me, especially for a player hyped up like Tatis. There is no knocking Tatis’ talent but the guy is fragile for such a young age.

In a reality, I am more impressed with players being on the field through most of the season to making timely hits like a single to a double that drives in two runs to take lead or win a game rather than hit a solo home run off of a team like the Diamondbacks when my team is already up 6 to 7 runs. Again, individual statistics mean nothing to me for a guy like Tatis when he can’t stay healthy and be on the field when it matters when he is getting that guaranteed money.

Then again, I like dominating pitchers over guys like Tatis who has 45 of his 81 career home runs of teams that play in the same division as his team. Tatis’ most home runs are off the Diamondbacks and that is not saying a lot with that pitching rotation.

          So you are ABStract?

Since we are talking about individual player, then the only thing we can mention is individual stats.

The statistics say that he stayed on the field for 59 of 60 games and 130 of 162. They also show that he was 2nd on the Padres and 5 percent better than league average in plating baserunners. BRS of 20% when League average was 14.7% His 6.6 WAR, which is a cumulative stat that gives credit for playing more games, was still #2 in the NL. .

But hey, you don’t like stats, so you can just ignore reality.

I do have a question though. How exactly of does a motorcycle accident show he is injury prone? .

        • BeeVeeTee

Hopefully, the Padres’ front office had some clauses in that contract given to Tatis but it seemed doubtful since he was a blooming young talent. It always been an issue with giving young athletes some much money at a young age so much money at a young age. These athletes received a large sum of money and get careless! This only hurts the fan base more than the owners and players while this has been one of the biggest problems in professional sports.

As a Chicagoan, I saw some athletes out party the night before games and were performing badly the next day. It is what it is when these guys make millions for playing a game. This is why attend very few games and not pay astronomical prices to sit out there on the weekend knowing some of these players are probably hung over. I rather watch the game on tv or listen to it on the radio.

If he would agree to restructure his contract at age 30, when they begin owing him the $36 mil per year, they could save the franchise by paying him $7.2 mil per year for 40 years. That’s right. Do the math. Good luck with that, Padres.

Kim is the better defender so if Crone/Kim are both on the field then Kim at SS and Crone at 2B makes the most sense.

Either way Kim is going to need to play more because they would need to cover 2B if Crone is the everyday SS. Other options for middle infield are Profar, who was awful last year, or Abrams, who likely isn’t ready for the bigs.

Kim is leagues better defensively than any other shortstop on the Padres 40-man roster. Couldn’t hit right-handed velocity to save his life in 2021 tho.

        • Brew88

Kim is a better defender than Cron? Data from their careers to date suggests not as Kim was very average as a defender all those years in KBO.

If they don’t sign another middle IF, I think Cron and Kim will split time at SS. Kim hasn’t figured out MLB pitching yet and until he does they’ll try to figure out a way to boost lineup by moving Cron to SS. More pieces are to be added, I would hope.

        • thelegendaryharambe

Kim was elite as a defender in 2021. He was worth 2.1 bWAR in 2021 WITH his awful hitting. And the eye test backs up what the stats say about Kim’s defense. Cronenworth is obviously a better hitter and Kim’s inability to hit right-handed velocity might prevent him from being a viable starter but if he is starting, it needs to be at shortstop and shortstop ONLY.

        • Brew88

Yes, I know he was very good in 2021 with limited playing time, just as Tatis was great in 2020, then look what happened…. Point being small sample size shouldn’t yet define him. Check out his many years in KBO where he was mediocre defensively.

There’s a lot that doesn’t pass the intelligence test of reading the article first in many of the comments here.

Tatis hurt his wrist in a motorcycle accident in December. There was a lockout. He was not allowed to communicate with the team or team doctors from December 1st until yesterday.

His wrist was treated at the time of the accident and we have learned today that he informed the team of the injury and gave them medical reports as soon as the lockout was officially lifted. He got to camp yesterday and was then able to be examined by Padres’ team doctors.

Most of us would not even realize we had a hairline fracture in that bone because we don’t put much pressure on it. It would just be a sore wrist. A ballplayer puts tremendous pressure on it both swinging the bat and catching the ball.

In the UPC, it says that a player’s contract can be voided by the team if they have non-emergency surgery without consulting team doctors.

When I first saw Tatis I thought he was great. Hustled and played harder than any I’ve ever seen. His hard play seemed to spur on his teammates. I thought what a great young player.
Fast forward to today I can see that he’s a piss poor teammate. Kid gets hurt during the off season on his “bike” and tries to hide it. Then when called to spring training he can’t swing a bat cause his wrist is broken. A good teammate would’ve admitted he did a wrong by playing on his dirt bikes and got the medical treatment at the time of the injury. Should be missing only a month instead of 3. Shame on you Fernando.

Tatis couldn’t talk to the team immediately after the accident. It happened in December and because of the owner’s lockout of the players, Tatis was not allowed to talk to either the team or the team doctors.

Yesterday was the 1st day of camp. Tatis was examined by team doctors yesterday.

So why would you even try to say that he was hiding it? Claiming that shows a shocking lack of even a basic understanding of the situation. Shame on you. The team learned of the severity of the injury the first day they could learn of it.

Fernando Tatis denied the reports that his son, Fernando Tatis Jr., was in a motorcycle crash in the Dominican Republic last Sunday, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

“He is fine, in perfect condition,” he said. “They treated him here; it’s not a big deal, just a fall—he scraped his knee and hands a little.”

This is crazy. Tatis injures himself on a motorcycle accident, and waits three months to have surgery? Is this because motorcycles aren’t allowed in his contract?

I remember when the Angels did that with Mo Vaughn. He hurt his bicep in a September game, they did nothing, and he tore in the first game of spring training. Amazingly, they still dumped his contract on the Mets.

Its because there was a lockout. You know, the last 3 months. Where were you?

It is against the Uniform Player Contract to have surgery without consulting a team doctor and that was no possible during the lockout. Tatis contract could have been voided if he did, During the lockout he could not even talk to team doctors or FO, let alone have them examine the injury.

The team learned of the severity of the injury when Tatis was examined by team doctors on the 1st day that it was possible, yesterday.

Are you referring to the hyperlaxity in his shoulder? well, that is a chronic injury that some of us are born into, including Tatis. Call it an injury if you want, but having it doesnt make him injury-prone, it’s just bad luck. He might also opt for surgery to reduce movement of the joint (laxity), but each case has to be managed and they have learned a lot about what works for him. But I see this chronic problem as different than a motorbike accident, in terms of laying blame on the guy as being injury prone.

Okay let me rephrase. His doctors and the team medical staff advise him and he and management have publicly relayed to us their medical prognosis and recommended options.. His options are to manage the problem via PT and strengthening or surgically stabilize the subluxation. The first option has so far been the course of action and he and the Padres medical staff are reporting very good progress. His decision, has been the priority option suggested by medical professionals.

        • SDHotDawg

It wasn’t the “recommended option,” it’s the option that HE chose. At no point in time was PT reported to be the “recommended” option. It was simply one of two options, and the choice was 100% Tatis. And that WAS reported.

Sign $330 mil extension then violate contract by riding motorcycle. I would withhold pay while on IL just to teach a lesson. Yes, I know the union would challenge it and I know it would create an uneasy relationship with a player that signed a 13 year extension, I also know if you do nothing to teach children accountability they never learn it.

Its an commonly broken bone and often happens when you put your arm out to break your fall. You could have a hairline fracture there and not even realize it if you are not constantly putting immense pressure on it like a ballplayer does, It would just be a very sore wrist.

Tatis did have it attended. The team was unable to have a team doctor examine him until yesterday because of the lockout.

We assign labels so easily, a flaw in our home sapiens. Yes, chronic shoulder laxity (usually a developmental problem some are born into) and a sudden fall to the ground are not linked. One is out of the control of the person. Falling off a bike is. So one is not reckless. The other one is. Amusing how some commenters are waging there is a trend of recklessness. based upon this one accident. He plays the game hard, takes chances on the basepaths, and I guess some are bothered by that.

Most sports contracts in MLB, NHL, NFL, etc. have a hazardous activities clause in their contracts. A standard MLB one from the 2016 CBA: The Player and the Club recognize and agree that the Player’s participation in certain other sports may impair or destroy his ability and skill as a baseball player. Accordingly, the Player agrees that he will not engage in professional boxing or wrestling; and that, except with the written consent of the Club, he will not engage in skiing, auto racing, motorcycle racing, sky diving, or in any game or exhibition of football, soccer, professional league basketball, ice hockey or other sport involving a substantial risk of personal injury.

Not to mention, for a team who have cried “small market” too many times in the past, it completely reset the early extension market by leaps and bounds.

“…he’d fallen off his motorcycle multiple times throughout the winter.”

Dude signed a 14 year / $340,000,000 contract and he fell off his motorcycle “multiple” times? Now he finds out he fractured his wrist possibly months ago?

The minute my ass fell of my motorcycle and I felt pain in my wrist (or any other body part), I would rush to the hospital to have it checked out.

    This is not good. Wow.

He was examined at the time of the accident in December. Read the articles about it.

He just couldn’t talk to the team or team doctors about it because of the lockout. Even if it was broken since then, he could not have surgery because that could void his contract if he did that without consulting team doctors first.

You are right that its not good. Not being able to see a top player in the game on the field after 3 months of the lockout is not good at all. I want to see the best play and he is one of the most exciting baseball players.

This may very well make the Stanton deal look like a cake walk in comparison….may very well go down as the worst contract in the recent history of MLB. Cue the Rock Star GM rock music…..
His intermittent athleticism and baseball ability looks like it will be a roller coaster ride based on his inability to stay healthy whether its because of baseball injuries or off season injuries he incurs.

On one hand you should be able to enjoy your life in the off season. On the other hand doing risky activities is a big no no as tatis in this case seems to have forgotten that he is a massive long term investment by his ownership and it’s his responsibility to protect himself

Seems appropriate to just cut and paste this here:

Its because there was a lockout. You know, the last 3 months. Where were you?

It is against the Uniform Player Contract to have surgery without consulting a team doctor and that was not possible during the lockout. Tatis’ contract could have been voided if he did, During the lockout he could not even talk to team doctors or FO, let alone have them examine the injury.

The team learned of the severity of the injury when Tatis was examined by team doctors on the 1st day that it was possible, yesterday.

Tone down the haterade a bit.

I am pissed! I have been clamoring for over a year now that somebody would give Eric Hosmer and ATV so we can go have a crash in a non baseball-related injury…

They delivered it to the wrong person!

Local news sources are saying that this break is old, I hope the Padres decide to withhold the pro-rated $5,000,000 until he is playing and earning it. Giving it to him will just teach him a bad lesson and give him a precedent.

This may give other free agents pause in signing with the Padres being that Tatis won’t be playing.

He’s already proven that he is irresponsible, sleeping around with the groupie that pegged Trevor Bauer…

So, if the players hadn’t been locked out, the Padres might have learned about the injury months ago and had a chance to get the ball rolling on surgery and rehab much sooner.

I doubt the Pads were the loudest proponent of the lockout, but still, a little schadenfreude stirs in my heart.

Please note, the lockout MADE NO DIFFERENCE in the fact that Fernando Tatis Jr:
•Rode and crashed a motorized bike
•His agents assured the club it was “scrapes and bruises”
•He did not seek medical attention and follow up
•Continued to avoid addressing the issue until organized team activities even though he admitted pain going back many weeks

Placing blame anywhere but on the Tatis camp is foolish. Tatis is not a child in age and in income.

Hey, you know Tatis and his camp are just keepin it real man……sign one of the richest contracts in Baseball before he even played what 2 whole seasons, but he shows his immaturity by insisting that money aside, he still wants to live his life the way he wants…..the epitome of a me first attitude rather than team first which seems to be the hallmark of many of todays athletes.

Right when you think the Padres front office can’t sink any lower you find out they gave away a $340 million contract with no clauses to protect their investment.

Didn’t put the team first. No need to take such risks riding a motorbike. Yes, could have had an accident in a car too, but you don’t normally fall out of the car door too easily. Risk analysis of injury higher on a bike. Sorry, no sympathy for Tatis Jr.

Depending on when he broke the bone and the treatment he’s done to this point – 3 months is possible. But, I broke the same bone in my hand years ago and it took about 8-9 months to “fully heal” but a year for it to heal to where I could go about my normal life again (powerlifting and strength training). It’s a bone that gets very poor blood flow so it isn’t a quick heal like a broken wrist. Obviously, different bodies and Tatis is a world-class athlete with access to a far superior medical team than I had, but 3 months is best case scenario. If he properly rested it and at least put his hand in a brace since December, then maybe 3 months happens. Hope for the best for this kid, love watching him play.

I had a similar injury as a teenager. They took a bone graph from my hip and put it in my wrist. I played baseball with a cast on most of the summer. The hip hurt more than the wrist. My mom had to force me to get an X-ray as even though it hurt I was still able to do most things without pain. It turned out that the break was an old break and the bone had deteriorated which is why I required a bone graph. It feels like you jammed your wrist not like a break or fracture.

Padres and AJ Preller have been very poor in managing their star player Tatis Jr.
Tatis Jr should have had shoulder surgery in October to be ready for Sprint Training.
Where are the clauses in Tatis Jr’s contract liming the Padres 300M man from risky and dangerous physical activities like motorcycle riding, sky diving and extreme sports activities outside of MLB?! What kind of insurance do the Padres have on Tatis’s contract etc?!
Otherwise, Tatis’s risky behavior will be a recurring trainwreck for the Padres.

The fact that he reportedly fell off it multiple times during the offseason is the real black mark. Not once after any of those falls did it occur to him “You know, maybe I shouldn’t be doing this”. He had his chances. On top of that, he was stupid enough to not think “Let me just get an MRI to be 100% sure everything is okay”.

If I were a Padres fan, I would not be happy at all.
