Padres’ Austin Adams Shut Down With Forearm Strain

By Anthony Franco | April 18, 2022 at 6:28pm CDT

Padres reliever Austin Adams has a forearm strain and will be shut down from throwing for at least six weeks, manager Bob Melvin told reporters (including AJ Cassavell of MLB.com). He is likely to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection.

It’s a worrisome development, since forearm strains can sometimes be a precursor to Tommy John surgery. Adams will try to avoid going under the knife with a PRP treatment and rehab, but he’s looking at an extended absence in either event. Even if he begins throwing six weeks from now, he’ll need time to build back arm strength and head out on a minor league rehab assignment before returning to the big league bullpen. Given that timetable, the Friars seem likely to place Adams on the 60-day injured list whenever the need for a 40-man roster spot arises.

Adams, 31 next month, was acquired from the Mariners at the 2020 trade deadline in the seven-player deal that also saw Austin Nola head from Seattle to San Diego. On the injured list at the time as he recovered from a September 2019 knee surgery, he only made three appearances that season.

The right-hander was called upon in 65 games last year, though, working 52 2/3 innings of 4.10 ERA ball. Adams punched out a very strong 31.5% of batters faced on a 13.3% swinging strike rate, continuing a career-long trend of missing bats in droves. Yet he struggled mightily with his control, walking 14.5% of opponents. He also incredibly hit 24 batters, six more than any other pitcher despite throwing less than a third of the innings of many starters around the game.

After just two appearances this season, Adams landed on the 10-day IL last Thursday. Melvin will rely on offseason acquisitions Taylor Rogers and Luis García, veterans Pierce Johnson and Craig Stammen, and starter-turned-reliever Dinelson Lamet as his top high-leverage options. Rookie Steven Wilson and former NPB closer Robert Suárez are among the right-handed options he can turn to in the middle innings.

When I saw the words ‘shut down’ in the 1st line of the headline (didn’t immediately see the name), just assumed it was Mike Trout.

So you skipped the first three and last two words of the headline?

That might be something to look into. Who knows how many things you may have signed without even remotely knowing what the words mean.

Oh well, maybe it’s good for the safety of the batters. At least for now.

“He also incredibly hit 24 batters, six more than any other pitcher despite throwing less than a third of the innings of many starters around the game.”

Hopefully it’s not TJ, good luck to him.

How can WHIP not include HBP???

Why would it? For most players it would add probably less than 1/1000th to their whip. Other stats make it apparent like how his fip was so high.

It’s not like it’s a secret this dude hits people like like a drunk Irishman.

It’s remarkable. But also helps explain how he managed only 52.2 IP in 65 games with the 3 batter minimum. He allowed 89 base-runners. 28 Hits and 28 Runs (24 of them earned).. For the other 44 IP his career, only 2 HBP. This is one funky line

Its really crazy how many people he hit in the number of innings he pitched. The majority of people with numbers that high are from like 100 years ago when pitchers weren’t throwing gas.

Basically one guy every other inning. If he knocked a star player out for an extended period of time, I feel like there should be some form of punishment to the team he’s on. Like you sacrificed opposing players’ safety because his overall line is acceptable.

I know it was one year, but this guy had to worry more than a few teams.

He doesn’t throw gas either. 80+% sliders. So much tilt on the slider is probably why he hit so many batters.

I think Munoz is going have a year that makes this trade look even worse. It’s already looking like a better deal than archer trade and that’s with Nola producing when he’s healthy.

The Padres lost that trade because Ty France was included in it.

Trammell has not shown he is a major league caliber starter, and judging from his minor league and major league stats in 2021-2022 and the scouting reports, he probably never will be.

At the time of the trade, Torrens had a .176 BA/.479 OPS in 70 games for the Padres and was deep on the depth charts with the highly regarded Campusano coming.

Munoz was injured at the time of the trade and has missed the last two seasons.

Those 3 for Adams and Nola would have been a good deal for both teams. A win-win that most trades are supposed to be.

Munoz has had just 5 appearances since the trade. Just the fact that Munoz didn’t play in the majors in 2020 or 2021 makes his value in that trade minimal. His 4.50 ERA and 2.3 HR/9 doesn’t point to a breakout season in 2022.

Adams has had 70 appearances and a 3.97 ERA with a 3.98 FIP for the Padres.

If Adams and Munoz were the only two involved in that trade, it would be a landslide win in the Padres favor.

He’s the biggest troll on this site (especially on SF posts.. ) and he never comments on Padre posts. We speculate he’s a Dodger fan trying to hide. So weird!

Actually, I think he’s a Yankee fan. There was a guy with a different name, but used the same exact language, always trashing the Giants in every Giants article. When someone accused him of being a Dodger fan, he said he was a Yankee fan living in SF, and said he trashed the Giants because, in his view, “Giants fans were the dumbest fans in baseball”.

I think he realized he had offered too much about himself. That username disappeared at the same time that @TonyGwynnSD19 started posting. Given the timing, the same shtick, and the same hatred of the Giants, I’m convinced it’s the same guy.

The stars are beginning to align perfectly! It’s only a matter of time before the Fire Sale begins in San Diego. Remember, you heard it here first! Yu Darvish will be traded at the deadline! Where is he going???? He will be joining the Los Angeles Angels! Yes, Darvish and Ohtani will be teammates! You heard it here first!
