Rays Announce Several Roster Moves

By Steve Adams | June 30, 2022 at 12:37pm CDT

The Rays have selected the contract of right-hander Javy Guerra and recalled righty Phoenix Sanders from Triple-A Durham, per a team announcement. They’ll take the roster spots of left-hander Brooks Raley and righty Ryan Thompson, who have been placed on the restricted list in advance of the Rays’ road series in Toronto.

Tampa Bay also announced that left-hander Jeffrey Springs, who had been slated to start tonight’s game in Toronto, has been scratched and placed on the family medical emergency list. Matt Wisler is instead serving as an opener tonight, and lefty Ryan Yarbrough has been recalled from Triple-A in his place. He’ll be an option to work the bulk of tonight’s innings behind Wisler.

This will be the second stint of the season for Guerra with the Rays. Once a top shortstop prospect with Boston, Guerra moved to the mound during his time in the Padres’ minor league system and has since had brief big league stints as a reliever with Friars and Rays. He pitched 7 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay earlier this season but was rocked for nine runs on 11 hits and four walks with four strikeouts during that brief spell.

Guerra, however, has been lights-out in Triple-A, where he owns a 1.29 ERA with a huge 32.1% strikeout rate against an 8.3% walk rate in 21 innings this season. Half the balls put in play against him have been grounders, and although Guerra served up three long balls in the Majors earlier this season, he’s yet to yield a round-tripper with Durham. While he’s being selected to the roster out of necessity at the moment, it’s hard to argue that he hasn’t earned another look anyhow with that standout performance.

The 27-year-old Sanders made his MLB debut with the Rays earlier this year and has pitched well both in the big leagues (1.80 ERA in 10 frames) and in Durham (3.38 ERA in 18 2/3 innings). The Rays’ 2017 tenth-round pick, Sanders only had his contract selected to the Majors this season, so he’s in the first of what can be three minor league option years for Tampa Bay.

Yarbrough, 30, was the Rays’ innings leader from 2019-21 but has seen his results trend in the wrong direction dating back to the 2021 season. He was optioned for the first time in three years earlier this season and has since pitched 19 innings of 4.74 ERA ball in Durham. He won’t have an easy task, returning to face a righty-heavy Blue Jays lineup at the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre, but an impressive showing could help him to pitch his way back into the big league plans.

Jung – never ask people to bring a side dish without specifically stating which one. Can’t tell you how many times you will end up with a table with 10 dishes of peoples ” famous ” potato salad or worse yet ambrosia. Just thought I’d throw a little life advice at you.

Jung – 20 years ago fruit tray would be the right answer – everyone likes them and somewhat inexpensive. Times have changed my friend.–.let the bigwigs and fat cats bring the fruit trays and the fancy sliced cold cut platters. Two words – pasta salad.. Under 10 bucks will make a good 5lbs of pasta salad. Use the savings to fill your flask with premium whiskey.

          Ok?

Why does the LGTBQ+ community need their approval exactly?

Why does the LGTBQ+ community need those players approval the Rays and mlb approval for their life choices?

Doesn’t that seem odd to want desire and demand approval from strangers?

What exactly is the point other than doing it for profit to get people in the lgtbq+ community to buy stuff from your business during pride month?

When do we get straight pride day?

When do we get traditional marriage day?
What about a day for Christians Muslims Jews? Religious pride day?

Pain killers actually stop pain and work as promised.

Covid shot, not so much despite multiple experts promising things it never did.

Like the cdc director saying “Our data from the CDC today suggests that vaccinated people do not carry the virus, don’t get sick, and that it’s not just in the clinical trials, but it’s also in real-world data.”

pain killers also lead to addiction and can harm other parts of your body so the irony in your statement shows you want to use it as a rant against a vaccine that does reduce the chance of dying from the virus by 90%.

So instead of a 99.3% chance of living I have a 99.7% chance of living? Thanks shot! I was really worried there for a second.

Man after all those people survived covid without shots and all those unreported cases where people recovered and the winter of death never happening I was really worried for a second. Phew. Good to know my chance of survival that was already pretty high just got higher.

They will never know how many people died from covid because many people had it before it was considered a pandemic. Some states under reported and some over reported. Anyone that had covid said it was the worse virus they ever had. All my friends and relatives are vaccinated and none was in the hospital or died from it. Some were over 80. Not sure why you mock a virus that killed more than 1 million Americans but not everyone have morals.

I’m not vaxxed and have had it twice. No where near the worst virus I’ve had, haven’t needed anything stronger than an Advil. So no, not everyone thinks it is the worst virus ever.

Why don’t you dust off your statue of Lord Fauci instead of commenting on others personal decisions that affect no one. You heard me…no one. The current strains are so weak that most don’t even know that they’re sick. Btw….triple vaxed and boosted Fauci has the virus again.

Why don’t you get off your anti-health stance. Fauci is not dead when most people his age dies from covid. So the vaccine works. I hope you are against the pro life people too or its just your opinion you are pushing.

God gift to humanity is having compassion for others. Something you do not have. Just because you are lucky and others are not. I am not bragging here about being lucky and never getting covid. Laughing at those who died from covid show you are not a good person but arrogant. I never said anything about forcing people to be vaccinated just stating how somebody who takes a lot of shots for various reason is scared of a vaccine when they don’t know what in the other shots they are taking. That is called irony. So do you always assume things and try to put words in people’s mouths to make them your enemy? i just state facts and you state opinions.

Regardless of your thoughts on the rays supporting pride month with a patch or international travel vaccination policies…..these 2 pitchers have chosen themselves and their “beliefs” at the expense of contributing to their team on the field (in their choice not be vaxxed) and placed their teammates and organization in a position to experience scrutiny regarding pride they otherwise would not have if they wore the uniform provided.

Feelings on both issues removed and just looking at the impact of their choice it leaves only one conclusion…. they have put themselves ahead of the team.

I’d like to know, but will never be able to find out, how their teammates feel about two guys not wearing a “you can be our fan” patch and not getting a life-saving vaccine that allows you to play at a key opponent’s ballpark. It will be clearer how the front office feels about them in the coming days.
