Twins Designate Chi Chi Gonzalez For Assignment

By TC Zencka | June 11, 2022 at 5:13pm CDT

5:13PM: Gonzalez has been designated for assignment, MLB.com’s Do-Hyoung Park reports (Twitter link).  Gonzalez allowed three runs in four innings during today’s start, as the Twins went on to capture a 6-5 win over the Rays.

11:57AM: The Twins have purchased the contract of Chi Chi Gonzalez and added him to the active roster, optioning Yennier Cano to open the roster spot, per The Athletic’s Dan Hayes (via Twitter). Royce Lewis was moved to the 60-day injured list to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

By promoting Gonzalez, the Twins will keep him in the organization. Gonzalez has an opt-out clause that he was prepared to trigger today if he was not added to the active roster. The former Ranger and Rockie did make one appearance for the Twins this season, tossing three innings and giving up three earned runs to the Blue Jays on June 3rd. He’s done well enough in Triple-A, registering a 3.44 ERA over 36 2/3 innings.

The Twins rotation has been decimated by injuries with Chris Paddack and Kenta Maeda both undergoing Tommy John surgery, Sonny Gray and Bailey Ober both landing on the injured list, and most recently, Joe Ryan being placed on the COVID injured list.  That’s a full rotation on the injured list, paving the way for Gonzalez.

Cano has struggled in his two stints with the big league club this season, posting a 9.26 ERA over 11 2/3 innings with a 12-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The 28-year-old Cuban has a much more respectable 5.88 FIP over those same nine appearances.

The Twins selecting Chi Chi reminds me of an issue I had with my neighbor once. He continually took out his garbage too early as mandated by our community rules. Weeks went by and my frustration mounted so I reached out on twitter and asked what people would do. Overwhelmingly the response was violent in nature, ranging from burning down his house to throwing him in the trash can and taping it shut. Some suggested I invite him over for some morning yogurt sprinkled with a few tablespoons of Flaxseed and a handful of raspberries. Eventually I settled on just ignoring the problem and it went away. I do not suggest this technique if one is dealing with grieving or a substance abuse issue. In that case you’re better off going to a car wash and having a cry while your vehicle is in motion.

JimmyForum this is like the greatest thing ever. Do I have license to repost whenever I’m in need of a non sequitur? On social media? In meetings? During a town hall meeting? Talent show? Candidates debate? Soapbox derby?

I’d say if confusing is the look your going for Have at It. They must of been desperate for someone to throw 4 innings. Do they have any other 4 inning DFA candidates coming? You have nothing to worry about from the White Sox because as long as Tony ( Alzheimers ) LaRussa is managing there’s no problem there. Why they hired him to manage a bunch of 20 somethings is beyond me. I’m guessing it was to placate Reinsdorf Sr. who was miffed he got fired all those years ago. His bullpen usage has been tragic. And I’ll say it again, I don’t think much of Katz either.

I just found out recently that his first name is actually Alexander. His grandpa nicknamed him Chi Chi.

        This reminds me of:
“Haha Clinton-Dix” real name Ha’Sean Treshon (NFL) —
Chi Chi is still one of the coolest nicknames!

Thanks for that! Did not know that.

    The twins are morons.

He initiated his opt out clause so they “had” to bring him up. Don’t be strong armed by awful players. He gave up 3 runs in the top of the first.

The Twins response to the opt out clause, as I said in that article, shoulda been “k bye”

At least he’s stabilized! With the way it started, I was half expecting Bremer to announce his DFA while he was being pulled from the game in the first!

They obviously didn’t bring him up solely for that reason or they wouldn’t have DFAd him immediately after the game.

    Twins really needed someone–anyone, I guess–to start today’s game.
Perhaps they can use Chi-Chi in long relief once Ryan and Gray are back as starters.

I believe today was a thank you to him for staying in the organization for two months. They probably knew they were gonna let him go. Probably didn’t expect much more than four innings out of him. Class act

    Cody Stashak IR
Blayne Enlow dl but now working his way back

This Ronnie Henriquez “guy” better be worth 50% of Mitch Garver

The Twins are running the roto baseball strategy of Pitch and Ditch, it seems. It’s amazing they’re in first place given how their rotation has been obliterated.
