Luis Severino Headed For MRI Due To Shoulder Tightness

By Anthony Franco | July 13, 2022 at 8:02pm CDT

Yankees righty Luis Severino left tonight’s start against the Reds early. After allowing four runs through two innings, he came out for his warm-up pitchers heading into the top of the third. After a few tosses, Severino departed the game. The team later announced he’s dealing with tightness in his throwing shoulder.

Severino will head for an MRI tomorrow, at which point the club will surely provide more information. It’s at least a moderately alarming scenario for New York, as he’d been working with slightly diminished velocity through the first couple frames. Severino has averaged 96.1 MPH on his four-seam this season, but Jack Curry of the YES Network was among those to note (on Twitter) he’d been sitting in the 93-94 MPH range early in his start. Severino did top 96 on a couple occasions tonight, but he was clearly hampered physically to some extent.

The 28-year-old is shouldering a significant workload, having tossed 86 innings through 16 starts. That’s on the heels of three straight injury-limited campaigns, as he combined for just 18 MLB frames between 2019-21. After his 2019 season was cut short by lat and shoulder troubles, he underwent Tommy John surgery in February 2020. The rehab and subsequent setbacks due to groin and shoulder problems kept him off the Yankee Stadium mound until last September.

There’s not yet indication Severino’s dealing with anything serious this time around, but the Yankees figure to be cautious with his workload in any event given his year-over-year buildup. New York has had remarkably good rotation health, with the top five of Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jameson Taillon, Jordan Montgomery and Severino starting 84 of the team’s 88 games. They’ve virtually never needed to dip into their depth options, one of myriad reasons they own MLB’s best record at 61-26 entering play tonight.

I’m not too worried until the MRI results come back. It’s not unexpected after such a long layoff from TJ surgery. I’d say let him use the AS break to take a breather. The team still has ginormous lead in rhe AL East. Severino on an innings count anyway.

Good one. Because injuries never lead to decreased velocity and poor pitch movement, which never lead to getting hit.

Way more likely Severino thought: “I gave up a HR. I’ll just start throwing slower with horrible movement and location so I can get out of here early.”

The true team? Cole owned 8 of 9 batters and Yankees lost a lead. Next 2 losses the starters also left with leads and lost those late as well. It’s hardly an implosion, and certainly not the pitching just disappearing. No one will have a sub 0.50 ERA for a season.

Taillon also hasn’t looked like himself lately and I wonder if he’s next on the I.L. Cortes might have been best suited for the bullpen after all and Monty while solid is a #3 at best. It’s been a great run but the pitching has been playing as expected pre-season. The Yankees are doing too well at this point to plug the holes with Keller and Quintana. Expect Waldichuck and Wes to head to Cincy because if there’s ever a year to go for it seriously it’s now while they’re still considered the best team since ’98.

The lineup as well, without Judge’s humongous year, would they be where they are? That winning percentage was not sustainable…what if they are .500 the rest of the way ???

The Oakland Coliseum has the most foul ground in baseball, which helps the pitcher when fouled-off pop-ups end up in gloves. Great American in Cincy is a launchpad. I’m tempted to think that Yankee Stadium might therefore be less daunting to Castillo. But, at the end of the day, I guess what it really comes down to is: who’s the better pitcher, and is he available? Castillo missed 36 days early this season with a shoulder injury.

@Fink Ployed- I think you might have something there. I was thinking the same thing in regards to the stadium’s. Montas throws harder then Castillo. But I feel Castillo is definitely the better pitcher. The real question is: who would win in a dog fight? Then that’s the pitcher to acquire.

A bag of Frito Lays with a diet coke would be an overpay for Joey Gallo. An optimistic angle would be that SD accepts a top 20-30 in exchange for the entirety of Snell’s contract. I’m not sure if salary dumping is the Padres biggest priority right now though.

Sevy most likely pitched his last game as a Yankee. Shoulder injuries are career killers. He’ll be a FA at the end of the season. I don’t see the team picking up his option. That said it could have been worse. He wisely signed an extension when it was first brought to him, unlike Didi and Dellin.

@Bright The Yankees hold a $15M team option on him for ’23 with a $2.75M buyout. So it’s a $12.25M decision. If he makes another 5+ starts with no regression, it’s an easy no-brainer. In the worst case scenario where he needs to be shut down this year, I’m leaning towards the Yankees picking up the option anyway. Last season, they took an $11M chance on Kluber who had far more question marks.

This is so unsurprisingly comical to me lol. Every single fan saw this coming from a mile away EXCEPT Yankees fans and their front office. They’ve run their starting pitchers ragged when they know how injury prone they are. Cortes showing signs of drop off, tailion showing signs of drop off, severino already hurt, Holmes begging his decline. The Yankees were once unbeatable this season… but now they are not a scary team to face whatsoever. Rays have the most players on the IL by far and will only get healthier and healthier. Going to be a wild finish

Oh my gosh stop with your sympathy bull crap, you didn’t cry for him when they pulled him from the game. Yeah it’s sucks for him getting him but it’s comical that the team is that oblivious that they didn’t take measures ahead of time to try and prevent it. Notice the rays starting to pull their aces earlier and earlier in the game to try and prevent injuries and save them for the latter part of the year. The Yankees have just been absolutely wearing out their starting pitchers this year and yeah it’s been concerning for their guys because of the huge injury risk. So yes I do feel bad for sevy but it’s comical at the same time because the Yankees are run horribly when it comes to injury

His velocity clearly dipped. Looked like he couldn’t get his full extension after pitches. It was interesting that Boone was clearly concerned and Severino convinced him he was OK. Next inning he decided to pull himself. You always hope these guys are honest. You just wonder if he might have made things worse pitching that last inning.

I hate what teams like the Yankees do to their pitchers. Their culture is so obsessed with winning during the regular season that they burn out their most effective pitchers. There’s absolutely no planning for the postseason. Hoping that Severino is not badly injured. But this is going to happen with Taillon and Cortes as well. They are being burned at both ends. Cole is throwing over 100 pitches in some of his starts. Yes, he’s a horse, but they’re doing to him what the Red Sox used to do with Clemens. It won’t work. Teams that win championships often don’t have their aces lead the way, it’s their second and third guys and their bullpen that steps up. There are too many damn postseason games in modern baseball. It becomes last man standing. And that last man standing is not often the team with the best regular season record. I don’t really like it that way but that’s where we are now. No wonder pitchers are dropping. It’s a sad state of affairs no matter who it happens to anymore.

What exactly would you have them do different? Would you pull guys earlier when they’re pitching great and tax the bullpen even more? Do my eyes deceive me or did you just imply that a winning culture is problematic? It should actually be applauded that the Yankees have kept the staff this healthy halfway through the year.

My philosophy is that a great team loses 60 games in a season. The less your effective pitchers throw in those games the better. I am NOT saying to lose on purpose! But use those games to give lesser pitchers opportunities to throw innings. Maybe some of those guys will turn out to be effective. In other words, manage your losses with the same skill that you manage your wins.
