Yankees Acquire Andrew Benintendi From Royals

By Anthony Franco | July 27, 2022 at 10:59pm CDT

The Yankees and Royals have made the biggest move of deadline season to date. New York announced an agreement to acquire outfielder Andrew Benintendi from Kansas City in exchange for pitching prospects Beck Way, T.J. Sikkema and Chandler Champlain.

Benintendi has been one of the game’s most obvious trade candidates for the past few months. The Royals entered 2022 with designs on competing, but they stumbled to a 16-32 record through the end of May. That made Kansas City an obvious deadline seller, and an impending free agent like Benintendi likely to change uniforms.

New York adds a contact-oriented bat to their outfield mix. Benintendi owns a .321/.389/.399 line on the year, walking at a strong 10.1% clip while only punching out in 13.5% of his trips to the plate. He’s only connected on three home runs, but Benintendi leads the majors with 91 singles and has picked up 14 doubles. He hasn’t looked like the 15-20 homer bat he was during his early seasons with the Red Sox, but he’s made contact on a strong 82.6% of his swings.

Benintendi’s production has been propped up by a career-high .368 batting average on balls in play. As a line drive hitter who uses the entire field, he typically generates solid results on batted balls, although it’s unlikely the Yankees are anticipating his 2022 mark remaining quite so high. Even if his BABIP regresses closer to his .325 career figure, his plate discipline and bat control should support a solid on-base percentage.

Those plus bat-to-ball skills contrast Benintendi sharply with the player whom he’s likely to displace from the lineup, Joey Gallo. New York’s biggest deadline pickup last summer, Gallo has struggled mightily since landing in the Bronx. He’s a .160/.293/.371 hitter in 498 plate appearances as a Yankee, striking out at a massive 38.4% clip over that stretch. Among hitters with 200+ plate appearances this season, Gallo has the third-highest strikeout rate (38.1%) and third-lowest rate of contact on swings (62.2%).

The Yankees are now set to roll out an outfield of Benintendi, MVP candidate Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks — owner of a massive .333/.471/.593 line this month after a slow start to the season — on most days. Giancarlo Stanton is the primary designated hitter, although he landed on the injured list yesterday. New York has already begun to cut back Gallo’s playing time while working the scorching hot Matt Carpenter into the corner outfield mix, and tonight’s acquisition is the firmest signal yet the Yankees are prepared to squeeze Gallo out entirely. It stands to reason they’ll try to find a taker for him in trade before next Tuesday’s deadline.

Judge has adequately handled a move from right to center field this year, leaving Hicks and Benintendi to play the corners. The latter has played exclusively left field since landing in Kansas City’s spacious home ballpark, rating well in the eyes of both Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating. Statcast’s Outs Above Average has pegged him as exactly a scratch defender in each of the past two years. He should add an adequate to above-average glove in the outfield while offering a notable improvement over Gallo’s recent work at the plate. It’ll be a boost to a lineup that already led the majors with 523 runs scored.

That the Yankees pulled the trigger on a Benintendi deal is sure to raise a few eyebrows for an off-field reason. He was placed on the restricted list before the Royals recent series in Toronto, indicating he’d not been vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time. That renders him unavailable for series in Toronto barring a change in his vaccination status or the removal of the ongoing prohibition of unvaccinated athletes crossing the border. Reports shortly thereafter emerged the Yankees could be dissuaded from pursuing him due to concerns about his availability.

That obviously proved not to be the case in the end. Jon Heyman of the New York Post and Andy Martino of SNY each suggest (Twitter links) that some close to Benintendi believe he’s now willing to be vaccinated. Ken Rosenthal and Jayson Stark of the Athletic indicate that vaccination status didn’t come up in talks between the Yankees and Royals front offices (Twitter link). Whether that’s because the Yankees anticipate he’ll eventually be eligible to play in Toronto or whether they’ve just decided to accept his possible absence for a few games isn’t clear.

The Yankees, who ironically open a four-game series against the Royals tomorrow, only have three regular season games remaining in Toronto. With an 11 1/2 game cushion over the Jays in the AL East, a three-game absence — if it comes to that — seem unlikely to have much of an effect on the regular season standings, although it could be relevant in the event the Yankees and Jays meet in the playoffs.

Benintendi is playing this season on an $8.5MM salary, around $3.3MM of which will be paid out through the remainder of the season. The teams didn’t make any mention of cash considerations, so it seems the Yankees will assume the remainder of that tab. New York’s luxury tax payroll now sits just under $265MM, in the estimation of Jason Martinez of Roster Resource. They’re paying a 20% tax on their first $20MM over the $230MM base threshold, with a 32% fee on every dollar spent between $250MM and $270MM. If they exceed $270MM via future trades, they’d owe a 62.5% tax on any money up to $290MM (with higher fees thereafter). It’s a franchise-record level of spending for the Yankees, who seem likely to explore both rotation and bullpen upgrades over the next few days.

Turning to the Royals return, they’ll bring in a trio of lower minors arms. Way, Sikkema and Champlain were each ranked among the Yankees top 30 prospects at Baseball America, with Way topping the group at #13 in the system. Kiley McDaniel of ESPN concurs that Way is the headliner of the return, tweeting that he looks like a possible mid-rotation starter.

A fourth-round pick in 2020, Way has spent this season at High-A Hudson Valley. He’s worked 72 1/3 innings of 3.73 ERA ball, striking out an above-average 27.6% of opposing hitters. The 22-year-old righty (23 next month) has posted strong ground-ball numbers throughout his early pro career, and he’s walking a career-low 9% of batters faced. Way’s control has previously been spotty, but BA credits him with a mid-90’s fastball and a promising sweeping slider.

Sikkema was the 38th overall pick in the 2019 draft. The canceled minor league season in 2020 wiped out his first full professional season, and he missed all of last year on the injured list. That confluence of factors means he’s made just 15 appearances as a professional, but he owns a 2.48 ERA with a huge 38% strikeout percentage and a strong 6.3% walk rate through 36 1/3 innings in High-A this year. BA praises his strike-throwing ability and suggests his lower arm slot adds some deception to his delivery. He’ll have to be added to the Royals 40-man roster at the end of the season or be exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

Champlain was a ninth-round draftee out of USC last season. The 23-year-old has spent the entire year with Low-A Tampa, posting a 4.30 ERA with a 30.5% strikeout rate against a 6.2% walk percentage in 16 outings against generally younger competition. Baseball America credits him with a mid-90s fastball and a promising slider.

The Benintendi deal will be the first of plenty of dominoes to fall over the next few days. Rosenthal and Stark report that the Blue Jays, Brewers and Dodgers were among the teams that had some interest in Benintendi, and it stands to reason the remainder of that group could look for other ways to add to their outfield. Ben Gamel, David Peralta and Tyler Naquin are among the other lefty-hitting rental outfielders who should be available, although none seems likely to draw as much interest as Benintendi.

Jack Curry of the YES Network was first to report the Yankees were acquiring Benintendi. Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported the Royals were receiving three minor leaguers, whom Joel Sherman of the New York Post initially specified were Way, Sikkema and Champlain.

@Mets698622 Depends. Many orgainizational top-10 prospects start out rated lower, especially if they are recently drafted or signed. Champlain for example was drafted in 2021. This does not seem to be a huge haul, but first looks can be deceiving a year or two down the road.

MLB hasn’t updated their team prospect lists. Therefore, prospects who have had good seasons- it doesn’t reflect in the rankings. All 3 of these guys are having good seasons. Just click on their name in the article and u can see for yourself.

Furthermore, instead of just looking at a number to justify a prospects worth- u can actually gauge it by production which is a much better gauge than hype. Strikeout rate and control are the best gauge for pitchers. Put that in perspective and it’s an excellent return

        Great return?

Benintendi of course is no star and a rental so expectations weren’t great but fangraphs has none of the 3 pitching prospects in the Yankees top15 of the yankees farm system.

Those guys seem to be more low leverage relief to 6th starter type of prospects.

Three of them though, there’s a decent chance that at least one works out and contributes at the major league level. That seems like a pretty nice return for 2 months of a LF with an ops in the high 700’s. If he slips a little back down to his usual production he’s basically league average for that OF slot.

Beck and Way are both ranked comparably or higher than Ron Marinaccio and JP Sears, both of whom have been up and provided quality relief innings at the ML level. The Yankees system has produced quality relievers pretty consistently, and they are rarely ranked in the top 15.

He is but remember when the Yankees got Gallo, people pointed out his OBP which was high. Look at what happened.

The advantage here is you have a player who is used to playing in a high pressure place. I think he is better than Gallo, obviously, but is he a difference maker? Remains to

It’s just a few games. Not sure what principles were preventing him from getting it that are suddenly not important, if that’s the case. You learn about people’s character during a pandemic, that’s for sure. Love hearing the thoughts and so called beliefs, both sides, if only they heard themselves.

It’s not the series in September that’s the concern, it’s the potential series in October. If he’s supposed to be the bat the Yanks need, would stink to have him sit out an entire post-season series.

Otis, the facts are that the unvaccinated are 10 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID and 30 times more likely to die from COVID when compared to the vaccinated. So while you and others are free to make your choice whether to get vaccinated, it wouldn’t seem to be the best informed choice. And we clearly see the effects of long COVID.

It’s come down. It was 20x in January now it’s anywhere between 5x and 10x. Presumably because there are so many less hospitalizations now and there’s better care for positive cases. Still an exponentially greater death rate though.

Because he hits .300, has gap power (see his doubles record), and keeps the line moving while displaying GG or slightly less defense…..he’ll be an immeasurable improvement over the homer, or more likely strikeout Gallo….great move!

His best quality is decent OBP. Otherwise, he’s a career 280 hitter, not 300. Career OPS+ 109, meh for OF. 14 doubles this year, 128 guys have more. He’s better than Gallo is true for most OF in AAA. A good proximity is Adam Frazier in Seattle.

He’s tied with his old teammate Bogaerts for 7th in hits in the majors, for one thing. He’s 8th in OBP. He’s 5th in BA. He’s 1st in singles. And his 127 wRC+ ties him with Matt Olson and Ian Happ. Besides that, he has postseason experience and batted .333 in 5 World Series games and he has a ring.

Right, that’s an opinion piece by Heyman. The OP said “remember when THEY said THEY don’t want him because he’s an anti vaxxer”. That’s a whole different thing. One implies that the Yankees took a stance and changed it to make a trade. What’s more likely is that Benetendi took a stance and will now go back on it to play for a team that will likely meet Toronto in a meaningful post season game. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get the jab if that’s the case. Either way, my point is that saying that the Yankees said they didn’t want him is wrong.

@Cybieber – You are allowed to talk to another team’s player if that team (KC) gives you permission to do so. I’m sure they’d allow NY to talk to him about his vax status if that was a key provision to acquire him.

@Trillionaire – If KC is taking on Gallo, then NY will need to pay KC more in prospect capital than if they only sent prospects to KC to acquire him. Taking Gallo off NY’s hands is a big favor to NY. Adding Gallo has negative trade value, so KC will receive a better minor league package if they agreed to take on Gallo.

Yankees only have three more games in Toronto the rest of the season. Doubt his vax status would be a deal breaker. If they end up playing Toronto in the playoffs, that’s another story, but they’ll likely cross that bridge if/when they get there.

This type of player is exactly what NY needs. Someone who can hit at the top of the order and get on base consistently for their big bats. Singles and walks work fine for NY so long as he gets on base. Plus he plays very good defense in LF and he’ll hit more HRs with that short porch in RF too. The top of the Yankees order should look like this now:

        1) DJL (RH)
        2) Benny (LH)
        3) Judge (RH)
        4) Rizzo (LH)
        5) Stanton (RH)

Next up: starting pitcher for NY and then some bullpen arms.

Empty stats like batting average (5th in the majors), OBP (9th), Hits (7th), BB/K (14th), and K% (17th)?

He’s 3rd in wRC+ and 6th in fWAR among all qualified left fielders. How about those stats — empty too?

He’s got the same fWAR as some guy named Starling Marte. Is that Marte guy any good? Probably another guy with empty stats, huh?

Personally, I like a guy with one of the lowest strikeout rates who gets on base at an elite rate and fields well enough to win a Gold Glove. But to each his own, I guess.

You probably ought to study up on the players involved before posting your opinion.

Beck Way ranks 4th in ERA, 5th in K/BB, 6th in K% and 10th in FIP among qualified pitchers in the South Atlantic League.

Since his promotion to the South Atlantic League, T.J. Sikkema ranks 11th in ERA, 9th in K/BB, 5th in K% and 9th in FIP.

Chandler Champlain is still in A-ball in the Florida State League where he ranks 7th in ERA and FIP, and second in K/BB and K% among qualified pitchers.

That’s one area where the Yankees vastly improved this year over last year, when they were terrible. A lot of credit goes to Luis Rojas according to the Yankee announcers. He was a great addition to the coaching staff.

Thrown out for not running out an easily beaten bobbled grounder to 2B. Thrown out by mile trying to stretch single into double. The thrown out by mile at home may or may not have been on coach, but he sure was slow to plate

I see fangraphs has him at a mind blowing -1.6 BsR so seems hes just that atrocious of a runner, regardless coaching

Other than that, were also screaming about the empty BA. That too seems backed up by numbers as he has the 9th worst ISO in game among qualified hitters. His 0.79 ISO is 0.74 points lower than the 1.54 mlb average, an astonishing number for such a slow runner

But NY being know for being so kind to players that have sure glaring issues, Im sure he will be fine

Maybe it was the coaching. Look at the difference in his baserunning in Boston compared to KC:

          fangraphs.com/players/andrew-benintendi/17901/stat…

He’s not a burner; but a savvy runner with average speed can be better than a fast one who doesn’t know what he’s doing. We’ll see what the Yankees can do to improve his running, if anything.

Trade for Castillo and then extend Judge and Soto, because they can easily afford it.

Chris Sale was better than Castillo with more control and he netted 2 top 100 prospects, so Castillo would warrant less. That leaves plenty of talent for Soto, assuming they don’t take on a bad contract to lighten the return.

They’ll hug prospects and pinch pennies, though.

Sale didn’t just get 2 top 100 guys. He got the overall #1 prospect at the time in Moncada + another overall top 20 guy. in Kopech plus another top 10 team prospect in Basabe and yet another lotto ticket in Diaz.

The way you worded is suggests they got him for a guy in the 70s and a guy in the 90s.

An equivalent deal today would be Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Matt Allan, and some 18 year old kid from the DSL.

So…2 top 100 guys, just like I said, and they Yankees have 5 of those, and 3 are in the top 50.

Sale was also YOUNGER (27 vs 29), BETTER (3.6 vs 3.1 ERA), and had MORE CONTROL (3 years vs 2 years).

So, yes, the Yankees have enough to get a guy who has 3 big strikes against his value, relative to the guy who got 2 top 100 MLB prospects, when they have 5 of those.

I think he can be a starter and he certainly deserves a shot. Looks fantastic coming back from injury. He isn’t ideal size, doesn’t have the best mechanics, and isn’t that young but he will get a chance to remain on a starters path and could be a good one.

One of the best things about this trade is that it doesn’t preclude any other major trades. None of the players traded would figure in a Castillo trade or even in a Soto trade, although Soto certainly very improbable now. With Benintendi on the roster now, a front of the rotation starter like Castillo or López is needed more. We also need reinforcement for the pen.

Really nice start! I was all over Cashman this winter and Spring, I was WRONG.

Fantastic news for the AL East. The Yanks once again sell major pitching assets to another division for the hopes of winning a WS. This will back fire as usual. Watch their entire lineup hit the the DL when it matters most….Sorry but until proven otherwise this is typical deadline behavior.

This was the obvious move to make to fill the outfield void. Almost glad they got embarrassed by the Astros and Mets bc I don’t know if Cashman makes any deals if that didn’t happen. Now go do the following 4 things:

    1.) Go get Castillo
2.) Get an extra BP arm
3.) Find a defensive wizard to mix into the CF rotation
4.) Bag up Gallo bc I think trash pickup is Thursday morning in the Bronx

I can’t see Andujar being a yankee much longer though. Maybe they’ll hold on to him since benintendi is a rental but more likely he’ll be included in a package for Castillo or Lopez.

I like the Benintendi pick up. I’d love getting Castillo especially if Volpe and Dominguez were somehow not included. Would Peraza, Waldichuk, Sweeney and Andujar get it done?

I suspect the first of a few trades. A bullpen arm and a starter on the list.

Benintendi was arriving in NY to play the Yankees starting tomorrow. Looks like now he won’t be leaving for a few months as he is now is playing for the Yankees.

Gallo has to be gone by tomorrow by game time, although Stanton’s injury does open up a roster spot until next week. They’ll probably just send Locastro down until Gallo is moved.

If the Yankees are at all worried about crossing the next CBT tier, they’re going to have to find a team willing to take on Gallo’s entire salary. This might require the Yankees to add a prospect to any Gallo trade to make it happen. This assumes the Yankees are still looking for a starter and bullpen help. It would be hilarious if they attach Andujar to the Gallo deal. They’d only get a lottery ticket in return for that package as Gallo has a negative trade value with his salary.

He has a .389 OBP. When you have a guy who already has 38 home runs before August, seven more than second place in the entire MLB, and 10 more than second place in the AL, you’re going to be more focused on a table-setter who can get on base in front of that 38-home run guy than a big impact bat. Judge is that big impact bat already, not to mention other big power contributions from Rizzo Stanton, and Carpenter.

This is a solid trade and Benintendi (whether ppl like it or not) is a huge upgrade over Gallo who mostly looks like he’s swinging a dang garden hose at the dish. No he doesn’t have power but he hits for average and will be on base for the other power guys to drive in. Him inserted into this lineup should keep the lineup moving either at the top or lower half depending on where they slot him.

I like Sikkema here. Quality arm and I do think that he will be a middle of rotation guy for the Royals by 2024. Beck Way and Champlain are where I think the royals got finessed. I feel like they had disappointing NCAA run and they are just not polished for their age. Royals should’ve gotten one more decent prospect along with Sikkema instead of the Way and Champlain.

I’m not a scout so this is my opinion. All said, this is a win for both teams and the players involved.

Other than being deep in low MiLB, I think LH Pitcher TJ. Sikkema looks like a great return. Chandler Champlain and Beck Way are two of the best SPs on their MiLB teams but they appear to be prone to serving up the HR. The Yankees C Austin Wells would’ve been a good target.

I’m surprised the Yankees acquire Andrew Benintendi. He fits their needs but his acquisition is too obvious compared to what I’ve come to expect from Brian Cashman. I think many other teams needing a CF appear to have more developed pitchers in AA.

There was talk he could’ve been called up to the Yankees by 2023. Also, he was a college star at the University of Missouri, and now he’s headed back to the Show Me State:

If they are expecting him to step in and be a regular, this is not going to end well for the Yankees. Benintendi’s offense this season in large part due to an unsustainable BABIP. You can expect his BA and OBP to drop 40 points over the course of the year and that fall will all be in Yankees pinstripes. His exit velocity is a pedestrian 89.0 MPH, so power is seriously lacking. Exit velocity, launch angle, barrel %, and hard hit % are all down this season. If he is going to be a 4th OF, then its a good pickup. At least they gave up no one with much value to get him other than Sikkema.

His 89.0 MPH average exit velocity is 0.1 lower than LeMahieu’s, Justin Turner’s and Luis Roberts’s; the same as Brandon Belt’s and Brandon Drury’s; and higher than the AEV of George Springer, Trevor Story, Willy Adames, Nolan Arenado, Nico Hoerner, Cedric Mullins, Xander Bogaerts, and quite a few other very good hitters.

The Yankees don’t need a home run hitter. They have those. They need the opposite of Gallo: a batter who doesn’t strike out a ton and who gets on base a lot so the home run hitters have somebody on to drive in.

Sure, I’d have preferred Ian Happ. By a lot. But it’s not like Benintendi can’t help the team. And he’s used to the bright lights on the East Coast. His career line at Yankee Stadium: .261/.336/.487/.823

For God sakes what’s the obsession with useless stats like exit velocity and launch angles. Not every thing needs to be home runs and 100MPH fastballs. He gets on base a lot and sets the table for the big boys. Cashman isn’t expecting Barry Bonds levels of production here. By your logic Luis Arraez must be garbage.

The entire vaccination issue is very frustrating to me…look, St Louis just went up to Toronto to play and their two best players Goldy & Arenado had to stay back because they are un-vaxxed. They lost yesterday…maybe having your two best players participate in the game like they are paid handsomely to do would have made a difference???

Okay so it’s one game , one loss, who cares? NO! It matters a bloody very great deal !!! My Mariners lost out on a play-off spot last year on the final weekend of the season with 90 wins. If they had won 91 games instead, the story would have been completely different. In the Yankees case; it will not come down to the final weekend (in all likelihood?) BUT for St. Louis and Milwaukee and perhaps another WC contender it very well may…I’m saying one extra win is nothing to just concede. I’ve LOST some major respect for those two guys and I would think they let down their manager and fellow teammates and fanbase as well. There is no excuse for that!

Also look at it from the Toronto perspective, they get to play these teams (the Royals 12 guys had to stay home) who have serious disadvantage lacking their star players , don’t you think that might play in Toronto’s favor a bit? If this season comes down to the Mariners and Blue Jays racing to 91 wins like last season, don’t you think the Jays had a little help (unfair advantage) stealing a few wins from under-manned teams,?? That’s why this pisses me off. Every win counts and these jar head jocks paid to the moon abandon their team and potentially screw up the pennant race for other teams+!+ Ludicrous!!! Why aren’t more fans pissed off about that ??? Sorry rant over.

Benintendi checks some of the most important boxes for what we were looking for in an outfielder– Gold Glove defense, lefty bat, and high contact. That last one is key, because the lack thereof is precisely why Gallo is on his way out.
I saw how well Nintendo performed against the Astros and no doubt the Yankees brass did too. We needed more clutch, not more K.
Now we need Castillo and I’ll be feeling REALLY good! The team has more than enough prospect capital left to get the job done.

Am I wrong to say that everyone looks at the rank of the prospect and what they can be way too much, instead of looking at what they’ve actually done? I know it’s a small sample size and he’s only in high A, but from what he’s done I don’t think it’s fair to have Sikkema ranked 19 in a system with his numbers behind guys who are hitting sub .230. I constantly see guys who are playing great not getting the credit they deserve because people are always concerned with what could happen instead of what actually is. Am I missing something here?

Ranking sites are fun for fans. And they are pretty decent on a majority of players but off and even off by a lot on too many. Most people don’t have the time or that much of a interest to learn how to evaluate and watch minor league baseball. Let alone College and highschool. So sites are they have. When you see a pitcher with these numbers though it is eye opening. Don’t need to watch him pitch to know he is dominating his competition.

Those rankings are more accurate at AAA levels. Organizations aren’t going to report to the media how they rank their prospects. It is in their best interest to misrepresent the system.

I look at AA for prospects. AAA is short term storage. TB is where I start for position players and SO:BB for pitchers. There’s other factors but that’s where I start. Defense matters too. If a Catcher’s E, PB and WP are high, he’s not coming to MLB as a catcher soon.

So I presume this takes the Yanks out of the running for Soto? That’s a good thing for my team, one huge competitor off the board for him. Let’s face it, Seattle will be getting either Soto or Castillo. I believe Seattle has the prospect depth combined with ample salary space to beat the Yankees for either of them. That being said, it all depends on how the Nationals (or Reds) internally value these prospects and which set of prospects match needs the best. My question is, let’s say Seattle outbids the Yanks for Castillo…do you think the Yanks could then pivot to Ohtani ??? I think NY would be an exciting landing spot for Shohei.

I don’t care whether he gets vaxxed or not – personal choice and I can see both sides of the whole vaccine thing. My point was that if I were a team mate of his I’d be irked that all of a sudden his convictions seemed to disappear when he joined the Yankees..why not when he was with KC. I understand he wouldn’t have made a difference due to the amount of other players out but it would just rub me the wrong way. Kinda like having a gf that won’t goto a punk show with you and then a week after you break up you see her at a punk show with her new guy..its annoying. Player misses a 3 game series in Toronto because he goes on a 3 day cocaine binge…

Before the “coCaInE iS dIfFeReNt ThAn VaCcInE” derps, 300 unvaccinated Americans are still dying EACH DAY. Right now. Far more than OD on cocaine.

Low level Russian Roulette Darwinism. Literally 300 dead a day for no reason.

All because they were stupid or lied to by bad people.

this quote comes from a Chisox fan in the deal that brought Kimbrel over, that Sox fans were later lamenting but it was probably one of the best quotes I ever read and it is worth repeating here on this deal and that is
Cashman’s job as the Yankee GM is to win championships, not trades. Sometimes it doesn’t work out like in the case of Gallo, but that is the risk you take. So down the line, these prospects may make it look like a bad deal, but around the Yankee boards all read about is winning number 28 and Cashman just took a step in that direction.

For those questioning the Beni trade the Yankees just made, interesting to compare 2 Cincinnati natives pre Yankee career wise in Beni and The Warrior…..Paulie O’Neill……..
Both players bat left, both had middling HR power pre-Yankees (teens on HR’s), had/have gap power, don’t have lots of speed but can run the bases well, hit for average, and played very good if not GG defense in the field, and are/were playoff tested…..just wondering whether Beni may be the second coming of a player who is revered in Yankee lore? Of course the Yankees would/well sign him longer term, but interesting comparison when you look at the stats.

Yankees didn’t give up the #38 pick in the draft plus 2 other minor league pitchers to get O’Neill though, they traded an extra centerfielder who was being pushed out by Bernie Williams who had two too many fly balls hit him in the head

In the Yankees losses to Mets was blatantly evident that 0-16 w RISP was why we lost both. Mets had 2 singles by Lindor and Marte for the rbi in key moments. Yankees had 0, and Judge still can’t hit great pitching (Mad Max) in key AB. In game 1 Yanks 4,5,6 hitters 0 fers. So they need a contact hitter in the lineup. Now who else must go to get a winning starter (Castillo)? You know who…Package em all & ciao baby ! Must get #28 THIS season

Not a Yankees fan, but kudos to them again. Trading your 19, 20, 21 prospects that are 22-24 at A ball is nothing and the Royals will be lucky if one of them becomes a bullpen arm by 2024.

Timeline is pretty accurate TBH, they are in A-ball now so they are at least a couple years away IF, and it’s a big IF on purpose, things go according to plan. But if things were going according to plan for these pitchers over the course of their careers they wouldn’t still be in A-ball sooooo….

I like the trade both ways. The rankings mean very little this soon into their careers. Way was a 4th rounder, who has performed decently. Sikkema was the #38 pick, and has a 54/9 K/W in 36.1 IPs in A+. That’s pretty good. Champlain has a 94/19 in 73.1.

But you won’t see any of them ranked until they throw some more innings. Before 2022, I think they had a combined 74 innings. But imo, that’s a pretty solid return for 64 games of Benni.

On the NYY side, they probably needed to make a move. Judge is unbelievable, but Stanton, Hicks, and Gallo are shaky.

Sikkema is a man(24) playing with mostly boys right now. He’s ranked right he should be as a prospect while Way has serious control issues but throws gas. He isn’t dominating that level like he probably should be. The package the Royals received from New York is right on par for what they gave up in Benintendi, a free agent at season’s end. I like the deal more for the Yankees but any time you can get three pitching prospects for one outfielder of his caliber you did fairly well. I don’t understand the hate other than what’s coming from the dim witted fanboys hoping for the Yankees to give up their entire farm system for Soto. They added the perfect bat for their situation and left their system pretty much untouched helping them add an impact arm or two as well.

I believe Benintendi’s numbers will really climb playing in that little league park. Plus the gold glove defense. This had to really increase the Yankees odds of winning it all.

It’s probably not the last move the Yankees will make but I fully expected them to go full evil empire mode given the amount of time that has past since they’ve last played in a World Series. Best team, clearly World Series favorites at the moment… they need the back breaking trade. The trade that breaks the spirits of fan bases and front offices alike.

I think Gallo is tradable, depending on how much payroll the NYY absorbs. He’s hitting the ball better this month (3 HRs & a 18/11 K/W). And home splits are awful. The 400 ft. HR guys aren’t always rewarded by the short RF porch, and maybe it is in his head.

I think this shows a big change in the thinking of the Yankees and Cashman, They stayed away from the big ticket items last winter with SS. Now Cashman decided not to pursue Soto and land Bientendi . It will be interesting to see what they do with the pitching. Do they go after Castillo, Lopez, or do they go after a guy like Merrill Kelly.

Getting 10d is going to be huge for the Yankees. If I remember correctly he always hit well in Yankee stadium will definitely help his power numbers and he is a contact first guy. Really good pickup by the Yankees should also lengthen that lineup. This probably closes the gap on the Astros I think the Astros are still the best team in the ALbut if the Yankees can land Castillo or Montas lookout.

I don’t think any of the guys KC got turn into start but they still received a lot more for Beni than they gave up. Add in the surplus value he’s given them since he got there and they can also resign him in the offseason as the Yankees probably won’t. This is how a small market GM needs to operate.

I’m as frustrated as anybody when Gallo strikes out, but I swear, if I were in the stadium I couldn’t join in the booing.

I don’t hate the guy, I feel sorry for him.

Should he have tried to change his approach? Sure. And despite what he said, this might be what trying looks like for him.

In any case, everybody knows he’s on his way out, so booing him serves what productive purpose? None that I can see. Okay, you’re tired of his failures and his performance is unsatisfactory. You made your point. I think he gets that. I don’t get how beating him up can feel good for anybody at this point. Imagine failing in front of 30000 people night after night.

Cashman sometimes strikes me as an unsympathetic character, to put it generously. But I hope he’ll hurry up and do the merciful thing and let Gallo escape this misery. It’s not fun to watch.

How long are MLB and especially the basball writers going to pretend this isn’t a thing.

It is a disgrace that Toronto has this kind of an advantage in the middle of a playoff hunt. If they make the playoffs, there will absolutely be an asterisk attached and God forbid if they advance at all in the playoffs.

Politics aside, there is absolutely zero justification for this, either medically or morally.

MLB needs to step in and force the Blue Jays to play playoff games in the US if their country can;t get it’s sh-t together.
