Yankees Place Scott Effross On IL With Shoulder Strain

By Darragh McDonald | August 22, 2022 at 3:55pm CDT

Yankees right-hander Scott Effross is going on the 15-day injured list with a shoulder strain, according to manager Aaron Boone, courtesy Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. Boone characterizes the strain as minor but says that Effross will be shut down from throwing for 7-10 days, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. Fellow righty Clarke Schmidt will take his place on the active roster.

It’s yet another blow to a Yankee relief corps that has seen its fair share of them this year. Earlier in the campaign, they lost Chad Green to Tommy John surgery. In July, Michael King suffered a season-ending elbow fracture. That month also saw Miguel Castro land on the shelf due to a shoulder strain. Here in August, the club has seen Clay Holmes and Albert Abreu go on the IL due to back spasms and elbow inflammation, respectively.

Effross, 28, was acquired from the Cubs prior to the trade deadline and immediately jumped into the mix for high leverage work in the Bronx. He recorded a hold in his second appearance with the club, later tallying a save as well. Unfortunately, the club will now have to get by without him as an option, at least for a few weeks. He’s thrown 52 1/3 innings this year between Chicago and New York, registering a 2.75 ERA with a 27.5% strikeout rate, 6.2% walk rate and 43.1% ground ball rate.

While the loss of Effross is certainly bad news, the Yankees got good news about their bullpen elsewhere. Holmes has started throwing bullpens without physical issues, per Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network, meaning he’s on track to return soon. Miguel Castro has started throwing as well, per Marly Rivera of ESPN, and could progress to throwing a bullpen by Friday. And in non-bullpen news, Boone tells Rivera that the plan for slugger Giancarlo Stanton is to be activated from his rehab assignment on Thursday.

The return of Stanton will be huge, the biggest problem this month has been the offense.

I fully expect the Yanks to soon go on a run. I said the same thing a year ago, and everyone mocked me, but I turned out to be right.

Montgomery looks like a steal for the Cardinals right now. Bader will the Yankees next season but doubtful he contributes much this season if he makes it back.

Montas is another issue entirely and one they should have seen coming

@Rsox- you might be right in regards to Monty and Bader, but its way to early to start judging the Frankie Montas trade. We don’t really know yet what’s going to happen yet. He’s made 2 starts. We’ll see.

Everyone can say oh but Bader is a gold glove CF they don’t come cheap. How about injured gold glove CF that don’t play? I guess the going rate for those is good left handed starting pitchers in their prime years. That trade along with the Montas trade are jokes. Those two trades cancelled each other out and left New York no better off than they were before they made those moves. In fact they’re in worse shape. They’re putting a lot of stock in German pitching well and Severino making it back to his previous form this season. I’m not sold on either of those scenarios playing out. When they choke the division away that will be the final blow to Cashman’s time in NY and I’m a Cashman guy but he botched up this whole season in a matter of two days.

Im a yankees fan for decades, but unfortunately he might be right. Cashman aversion to procuring top free agents, or trades because of cost, is preventing team from getting to the next level, or of even being competitive lately.

DR is on the right track. Castillo is in Seattle because Cashman believes Anthony Volpe will be the Yankees shortstop in 2024.

Think about the cost of that decision when the Yankees couldn’t beat the Mariners — whose rotation is beefed up by Castillo while Sonny Gray Jr (Montas) has failed in pinstripes.

Not trading for Castillo, not offering Verlander an extra year option, trading Monty… it’s all easy to say in hindsight. I’ll let the season play out. The team isn’t this bad.

@ctyank7- DR is on the right track? Seriously when did Cashman ever say that Anthony Volpe was going to be the starting shortstop in 2024? Exactly, he never said that. Luis Castillo should of been acquired last season but nobody wanted him then, remember? That would of been the best time to trade for him. Castillo looked great pitching against the minor league AAA A’s yesterday didn’t he? Smh

I agree YBC. Let’s see what happens. It takes a year or even years in some cases to judge a trade. As an example, remember when the Yankees traded Gallegos for Voit? Everyone thought the Yankees stole that trade, but in the final analysis it was the Cards who won the trade. In NFL terminology it’s the 4th quarter.

        The poster is a shrill……but he’s correct.

The Mets are taking over NYC baseball. It’s not just the team on the field or the money spent on payroll this year. It’s the organization that Mr. Cohen is building top to bottom, assuring quality payers will be coming up to the ML roster constantly.

The Yankees FO has been lost for years now. Jumping at this theory and that one. Ruining their players careers by pulling them instead of straightening them out, Replacing them with overpaid, over the hill, old guys that get injured a lot.

Yankees are (and have been) joining with the Knicks and NY football Giants – every year their delusional fans and media think they’ve got the guys this year to win a championship, only to see the team fizzle out for one reason or another.

So speaks the all knowing Samuel…….
          1. New York baseball isn’t being taken over by the Mets….who are building a nice team in Queens and have a terrific manager, their owner didn’t become a $$$ Billionaire by spending….rich people are the ones who pick up a penny on the street while the rest of us walk by……the Yankees still rule most NY publications and on line news but that will change as the Mets continue to have success.
          2. That Yankees front office being lost for years now….which other ML team has made the playoffs (albeit only with one WS win) over the last 20 years????? waiting,…waiting….waiting…..
          3. Which players are you referring to as “over the hill” overpaid (when almost every player who’s had success isn’t) that the Yankees have traded for?
          4. And as far as “delusional fans” guess God made you the expert on everything because you sure post like it……every team rightfully goes overboard with praise as well as criticism for their team as well as competitors within their division/league..
Bottom line…..you don’;t know Snit about the Yankees or their fans even though you talk like it!

Do you follow the games at all?

Benintendi has 12 hits and an .811 OPS in his last 13 games.

Effross, 28, was acquired from the Cubs prior to the trade deadline and immediately jumped into the mix for high leverage work in the Bronx.

    And there it is.

Effross was pitching high-leverage innings for the Cubs before the trade. He had 13 holds with the Cubs.

The Cubs are not playing in any high leverage situations. They are out of it. So throwing him into the fire of what is rapidly becoming a race because you’ve already burned out half your staff in high leverage situations that are often created by the high pressure environment of trying to win every game, I know this is a terrible sentence, but they are blowing it and blowing out pitcher’s arms.

It’s sad that it took three relievers going to the IL for Schmidt to get called back up. He should be in the rotation now and German moved to the bullpen. Hopefully all of these guys going down with injury are ready to go for the postseason

I’ve been calling for a trade of German for years, but I don’t mind admitting I was wrong, at least judging by his recent outings. He’s been better than I expected this year. For one thing, he hasn’t been victimized by long balls, which used to be his Achilles heel. Pitting him against Scherzer looks like a gruesome mismatch, but maybe he’ll rise to the occasion.

I’m not a big fan of German in any capacity, but he could at least be useful out of the pen down the stretch. He seems to look sharp for 3-4 innings then quickly tail off. I’m not looking forward to this quick set with the Mets but at least they’re not facing deGrom anymore

Well, German gave up a long ball, but other than that, he was terrific. Beating Scherzer is no mean feat. I don’t think a lot of people saw that coming.

@Ronk325, Agree completely. German is generally effective once through the lineup. In a perfect world he is the multiple inning reliever VERY roughly taking King’s role. Of course, NO One can fill King’s role. The melt down in the Yankees BP began when King got injured.

That’s the biggest issue with German – one outing he can look lights out, and then the next three outings, he looks inconsistent while giving up the long ball too much.

I like Schmidt so much more than German for a variety of reasons, both personal and professional, so I’m glad he’s back. I hope he proves his effectiveness as a starter and takes the fifth spot.

Johnny Lasagna looked really good too. His velo is back to peak output and he was right on the edges with that wicked two-seamer again. That’s great news, if he’s not overused and burned out prior to October.

A lot of positive from last night’s win.
Perhaps none bigger than Johnny Lasagna impressive outing. PERHAPS more than any other team the fate of the Yankees depends on their health. How about Severino, Stanton, Bader, Holmes, and Britton all ready for the post season!! If I’m really going to dream throw in the Carpenter as well. Realistically, we’re probably not getting all of these guys back, would settle for Severino, Stanton, and Holmes.

This team was “eerily” healthy for the most part during the first half of the season and this was bound to happen sooner or later given their recent history of injury woes. The question is, will Judge remain healthy? He has only 4 home runs in the month of August so hopefully it’s just a slump and not a nagging injury.

If it should happen that the Mets end up in the World Series facing the Astros, my cheer will be “Let’s go, Mets!”

The issue isn’t setting the expectations from Judge, in reality, because he’s already surpassing them on nearly every level. The issue for Judge is setting expectations for the rest of the lineup (like getting/staying healthy & productive) so they can offer Judge some lineup protection and opposing pitchers actually pitch to him, imho. If he gets pitches in the zone, as he was getting in the first half, hitting 61 will be an easy day for him.

Also, *if* he does hit 62, he will be the definitive single-season HR champion, imo. First one to pass Maris without PEDs.

It’s incredible to me that paid sportswriters publish such BS as this from a guy at USA Today:

“In analyzing the Yankees’ recent playoff failures, Montgomery represented more of the same – a contact-friendly lefty who provided quality innings from April to September but was far from indomitable come October. They couldn’t beat the Astros in the 2019 ALCS with J.A. Happ and James Paxton taking the ball, and stumbled in the 2020 ALDS with Happ and Montgomery himself hen-pecked by the Rays.”

How lazy does a professional sportswriter have to be to not bother to consult the record?

Montgomery has pitched exactly one — 1 — postseason game. He lasted 4 innings before being replaced by Green in the fifth, and he gave up only three hits and one run for a 2.25 ERA. Where does this writer get his information, from Twitter discussions? “Hen-pecked by the Rays”?

Also, the Yankees won the game Monty pitched, 5-1. Green got the win, even though the Yankees had a lead when Monty was taken out, because Monty wasn’t allowed to go five innings.

    Cashman – the Ninja.

“Montgomery (7-3) retired 27 of the 28 hitters he faced. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter. He needed just 99 pitches — 65 of which were strikes — to stifle the Cubs and qualify for a Maddux (shutout with less than 100 pitches).”

    mlb.com/cardinals/news/albert-pujols-homers-jordan…

That was Monty’s fourth win in a row for the Cardinals. This is his ERA in Cardinals red: 0.35. This is his WHIP: 0.62. This is his opponent average: .149.

    Who needs that, right?

Fink, the 4 games before Gumby was traded to StL: 13 runs in 18.2 innings, a 6.26 ERA. 2 recent games for him were against the Cubs and Rockies. I’m a fan of Monty, but he’s not this Monty you’re seeing. Was he a real solid 4 starter? Yes, yes he was. Can he maintain a .35 ERA? No effing way. Can Montas be a 3 or maybe a 2? Yes, that’s in there, but he’s not showing it…yet.

Does Montas have a history of taking PED’s and therefore cheating? Yes. Does Monty? No. That’s why they made the change. They can’t win without cheaters. Never have, never will.

49thyanks, the Rockies are 9th in the majors in runs scored. In the last two weeks, the Rockies are 6th in runs and the Cubs are 7th. Both teams were hitting when Monty faced them.

Fink, CR is 9th, but that’s due to 376 runs at Coors versus 180 away. Can you believe that discrepancy?! Monty faced them in Busch.
Busch has the 3rd lowest park factor for runs scored. It’s a good spot to pitch and I hope Monty continues to do well.
Cubs are more balanced in where they score, but they’re still 22nd in RS/G.

Good points. I admit that the issue of Colorado’s Home/Road splits occurred to me, but I was too lazy to do the legwork. Busch is the hardest park to hit a home run by some analyses I’ve read. I’ve wondered if that’s had a relaxing effect on Monty.
