Phillies Outright Johan Camargo

By Anthony Franco | September 27, 2022 at 9:10pm CDT

The Phillies announced this evening that infielder Johan Camargo cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The switch-hitter was designated for assignment over the weekend.

Camargo signed a $1.4MM free agent deal with the Phils over the winter after being cut loose by the Braves. It marked his first stint outside the Atlanta organization, and he spent the first half of the year serving as a depth infielder. Philadelphia gave Camargo some early run at third base, but he quickly ceded that job to Alec Bohm. He served as a fill-in shortstop while Didi Gregorius was injured, but the Phils eventually turned back to rookie Bryson Stott there. Camargo was optioned to Lehigh Valley at the end of July, but he hit only .213/.311/.298 with two home runs in 167 trips to the plate with the IronPigs.

It’s the fourth straight subpar offensive season for the 28-year-old. Camargo broke into the majors with a pair of above-average years, but he owns a cumulative .219/.271/.348 mark dating back to the start of the 2019 campaign. Even with the ability to cover anywhere on the infield, that tepid offensive output has squeezed Camargo off a pair of rosters in as many years.

As a player with between three and five years of major league service, he has the right to refuse the outright assignment in favor of free agency. Doing so would mean forfeiting his final week’s worth of salary, though, so it seems likely he’ll accept the assignment and report to Lehigh Valley for the final game of their season tomorrow. He’ll hit minor league free agency anyhow at the end of the season, unless the Phils reselect him onto the 40-man roster before November.

As a fan, I wish I could outright the Phillies. They’re being gifted a playoff spot and doing their best to give it back.

As a Braves fan I’m not supposed to feel bad for Phillies fans, but I do. At least the Brewers are screwing it up too, so that’s something.

What this team needs is Nolan Arenado – a great glove at 3B with a strong bat as well.

New players. New manager. Same September story. This franchise has been cursed since 2011.

They are so frustrating. They always waste Wheelers starts,Bohm is their only clutch RBI guy, but he hits into too many DP’s

P.S. It appears most Philly sports fans happily migrated to the Eagles 2 weeks ago…..just in time for the change in the weather.

It’s a football town. Eagles first…everyone else second. Another thing…Philly fans adore, welcome and embrace all the hate and vitriol from sports journalists…Period. They were actually going to have a parade down Broad St. if Smarty Jones or Barbaro won the Triple Crown back in the early 2000’s…

Maybe a parade down Street Road where the track Smarty was based out of, but not down Broad.

As a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, I can honestly say I don’t appreciate the bad press from national and other city’s sports journalists. But I did enjoy Ray Didinger’s response to the stooge reporter from Boston during the Super Bowl LII pregame.

Ol Camargoat. If he can’t make a roster next year he needs to give it one last shot as a pitcher. Cannon arm. As an amateur several teams wanted him to pitch.

He has stops in TB and ANA before having to reinvent himself, so that won’t happen until 2024 at the earliest. The Rays will wring whatever production he has left outta him, and the Angels will trot him out there until his BA drops to .180 for a month straight before pulling the chain. We’ve all seen this movie before.

Just goes to show you that when the Braves give up on somebody, it’s usually for a good reason.

I’ve been a Phillies fan my whole life and I still don’t understand any of the teams moves. About a month ago they sent Darick Hall to the minors because of the return of Bryce Harper from the IL.. Makes sense on the surface unless you consider the fact that Hoskins has about 3 decent games a month and then they bring up Donny Sands brought up just sat on the bench as a third string catcher.
Meanwhile the offense slumped through September while Hall (who hit 9 home runs and a lot rbi”s and an over .800 OPS in a brief stay in the majors) is destroying AAA pitching. To top this off they name Hall they’re Minor League player of the year. Also Hall is a much, much better fielder at first base than Hoskins.

I disagree on the Hall/Hoskins piece. Hall’s not a great fielder either and he’s crushing minor league pitching. Hoskins is the better option. Hall can be a valuable bat off the bench if they make the playoffs which is a big if.

But, Donny Sands??? How does that make sense? Anyone you can name is a better fielder than Hoskins. and the first item of business is getting there and that’s doubtful the way they’ve been playing lately. They need Hall’s bat NOW!!

Yes, but he’s still a bad fielder. Hoskins is a terrible fielder, but a good hitter with hotstreaks that can carry the whole team. Hall can’t do that. You want Hall getting as many bats as possible so you can use him in the playoffs. But this team doesn’t deserve the playoffs honestly.
