Vinny Capra Re-Signs With Blue Jays

By Maury Ahram | November 20, 2022 at 12:13pm CDT

Infielder Vinny Capra is re-signing with the Blue Jays on a Minor League deal, reports Robert Murray of Fansided. Capra had been non-tendered by the Jays on Friday and had received “strong interest elsewhere” before opting to remain with Toronto, per Murray.

Capra, a 20th-round pick in the 2018 draft, made his MLB debut in early May. He had one hit, two walks, and a strikeout in seven plate appearances before being sent down to Triple-A Buffalo near the end of the month. He had three separate stints on the 7-day IL before undergoing left middle finger tendon surgery in early October and being placed on the 60-day IL.

Despite several injuries, Capra had a productive season at Buffalo, hitting .283/.378/.403 with five homers and six doubles. Perhaps most impressive was his low strikeout rate (13.1%) and high walk rate (13.1%). Capra will likely receive an invite to Spring Training and attempt to earn a spot on the Blue Jays’ bench for the 2023 season.

Wow, kind of suprised he signed a minor league deal. He could probably be starting opening day in DET and elsewhere

Is there a benefit for him to sign a minor league deal, as oppose to the traditional pre-arb route?

He’s off the 40 man so a way for Jays to retain control without him taking up a spot

Right, but what’s the benefit for him to sign a minor league deal, during pre-arb years?

Now, it’s like he’s stuck in the Blue Jays system, when he could’ve been placed in waivers, which I’m sure is stressful but maybe a better opportunity for himself.

Might be the only deal or best deal offered or head over seas.

Most minor league deals in this situation (obviously not when drafted) are one year deals. It is highly rare that a two year deal is given.

As opposed to many free agents holding for money; its not even Thanksgiving yet and Vinny knows already going into next where he’ll be playing, how much he’ll be making. That level of comfort speaks a lot escpecially around this time of the year.

Good Sunday afternoon to you Newman.

It guarantees him a pay check and playing time to impress other teams, gotta remember he was just re-instated off the 60 day IL, where he was for most of 2022 season

Gotcha. Yeah, I certainly do not understand whole contract-salary side of the game.

I thought when a club selects a minor leaguer w/ team control – he is paid minimum league salary; regardless if he plays 2 or 162 games.

The Jays re-signed him, they did not select him and his contract does not need to be minimum salary he could sign for upwards to 1.5 mil which i believe is the max for a minor league contract.

Gotcha. Well, it seems like a pretty good deal for TOR, and stability for Capra. -Which I can certainly understand from a family perspective.

A’s definitely offered him the opening day 3B gig and he said “no, your team is owned by a scamming loser named John Fisher who should have never bought the team to begin with”.

Wait 10 more years. .255 career hitters and starting pitchers with 105 career wins will be in the hall due to the “give everyone an award” society.
