Brewers Sign Eddy Alvarez To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | December 3, 2022 at 2:45pm CDT

The Brewers have signed infielder Eddy Alvarez to a minor league deal, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The deal includes an invite to major league spring training.

Alvarez, 32, played the past season with the Dodgers, appearing in 14 games. He hit just .160/.154/.160 in 27 plate appearances while appearing at four positions. He went far better at Triple-A, where he slashed .322/.439/.554 with eight home runs in 47 games. He logged most of his time at shortstop and second base in the minors, but also spent a little bit of time in the outfield and at third.

Alvarez actually won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in speed skating, but opted to chase his baseball dream soon after and signed for the White Sox as a free agent that year. After coming up through their minor league system, he was purchased by the Marlins in 2019 and made his big league debut in 2020.

Across two seasons for the Marlins, Alvarez hit a combined .188/.287/.287 with a single home run in 142 plate appearances before departing as a free agent at the conclusion of the 2021 season.

Alvarez will compete for a bench spot in Milwaukee during the spring, but in any event will provide the Brewers – who recently traded infielder Kolten Wong to Seattle – with a bit of middle infield depth in 2023.

Mookie is a pro bowler in the off-season. Normally, good athletes are good at more than 1 thing.

Mookie is not only a PRO bowler but one of the very best in the world. I have heard him say he has over 15 perfect games to his name. And apparently Trout is a long drive champion down at the range..

I’ve seen articles on him about when he was in High School. He was ranked 2nd in the state I think. Had like a 230avg as a junior in HS.

It’s a minor league deal, not earth shattering. You gotta have these guys, but it seems a bit early to be making these kinds of deals when you have so many other glaring holes on the major league roster.

Well hopefully that ship is sale. I know he is a free agent. Plus I think with Monto, Devanney, Dillard, Wilson, Warren, Holt and Zamora probably starting out at AAA hopefully we don’t resign him. I have heard that teams are looking to really use the rule 5 AAA part of the draft this year.

Article didn’t mention Alvarez medaled in short track speed skating which is absolutely insane compared to regular speed skating. . A bunch of skaters fly around a small oval in a tight pack. More often than not, someone gets knocked into a wall. These skaters have some stones. It’s one of the best spectator sports around.

Brewers fans: Enjoy Eddy. He is a terrific player with a ton of good vibes. He deserves a longer leash at the big leagues, and I am sure he can adapt to ML pitching in a month or so.
Might not solve 2B now with Wong gone but will play great defense and might bat decently.
    Good under the radar catch.

Kolten Wong out Brice Turang in. Alvarez helps replace Turang in AAA to showcase for other teams before requesting fa waivers. I’m sure his contract has a date to be called up by or released.
