Giants, Ljay Newsome Agree to Minor League Deal

By Maury Ahram | December 25, 2022 at 2:58pm CDT

The Giants have signed reliever Ljay Newsome to a minor league contract, according to his transactions log at MLB.com. The 26-year-old joins the third organization of his professional career.

Newsome entered the pro ranks in 2015, selected by the Mariners in the 26th round out of Chopticon High School in Maryland. He’d spend the next five seasons working his way through Seattle’s system, eventually joining the big league club’s alternate training site during the 2020 season and appearing in five games at the major league level, throwing 15 2/3 innings but giving up 20 hits and nine earned runs.

Nevertheless, the righty broke camp with the club during the 2021 season but would suffer a UCL injury in May, ending his year. The Mariners placed him on waivers following the season and he was subsequently picked up by the Cardinals. Newsome made his return midway through the 2022 season, but struggled across at Single-A and Triple-A levels of minor league ball, pitching to a combined 6 ERA in nine innings while giving up 11 hits, albeit with a solid 8:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Following the 2022 season, Newsome was released but it did not take him long to secure a new home for 2023. Despite a poor cumulative 6.53 ERA in 30 1/3 innings at the major league level, he has shown elite control, walking only four of the 137 MLB hitters he’s faced (2.9%). Additionally, during his last full minor league season, Newsome pitched to a 3.54 ERA in 155 innings across three levels with a sparkling 169:17 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Newsome has flashed elite control and is coming off a season of rehab. He’ll presumably start next year with the Giants’ highest affiliate in Sacramento but could put himself in the mix for an MLB bullpen job at some point. Newsome has three option years remaining, so if he cracks the 40-man roster at any point, the Giants can freely move him between San Francisco and Sacramento.

Although a new joke, the subject is old. Thanks for trying, but we all have got over it by now.

Well maybe I shouldn’t try to speak for “all” as there are those who prefer to project seasonal gloom and doom.
I’m looking forward to the new look of the team and do not get caught up in what might have been.

#gfan fair enough. After 5 years of Farhan I think we know what to expect though. To go hard for Ohtani and almost get him.

27, and you’re feeling the need to show your usual originality on Christmas. I’d tell you to get a life but here I am on Christmas as well. BTW, do you realize that Newman probably is enjoying his Christmas and has no clue why some lowlife would call Zaidi a dumpster diver over his signing. Sorry, I can’t believe I called you a lowlife on Christmas……LOL

I know this guy is just a dumb troll, but I wish the term “dumpster diving” would go away. These players are human beings, not pieces of garbage.

This player goes into the well-worn “you never know” category. He may already be a better gamble than some worn-out big-league relievers (Bedrock, Hand, Chapman) for future. Still, I remember from playing days that a pitcher who gives up lots of hits doesn’t have time to walk batters. 😉 Merry Christmas, all!

That’s how I traveled all 50 states and beyond, hitchhiking much of the time? That’s how I raised multiple kids, as a single dad? Your ignorance is showing. Sorry if my comment offended you, but resorting to desperately grasping at straws, to attempt hurling personal insults at strangers, is immature, soft and weak. Grow up.

    Let’s see
    Rodgers
    Conforto
    Haniger
    Manea
    Sterling
    Peterson
The Giants have agreed to contracts with 6 of the top 44 free agents.
They weren’t getting Judge, Turner, Verlander, or Radon for various reasons. They weren’t outbidding The Padresfor Bogaerts. Correa is damaged goods.
Not a terrible offseason. Not great either.

Pederson is a horrible signing. 18.9 mil for a DH platoon bat, who bunts with 2 strikes with runners in scoring position and doesn’t have enough fire in his belly to respond, when an opponent literally b***h slaps him…
Also Taylor wasn’t one of the top 50 free agents and they haven’t signed 6 of them.
Judge could have been ours, but our front office sucks. Rodon already WAS ours, they let him go.

Misfire, I’m pretty sure that was Belt that bunted with 2 strikes and risp against Colorado. And Belt owned up to it btw. Pederson did it against a lefty vs Padres. One runner on first, not scoring position. You continue to post blatant factually incorrect comments. Like the conforto signing costing Giants due to the QO. And who knows how many other bonehead statements since I’ve learned to just ignore your blather. Seems like the backbone you brag about goes through your skull, where your brain should be. Put a fork in it…your skull I mean…to check if a brain is there.

He has the right drive and work ethic to maximize himself. Hopefully future health and some elite SF pitch coaching will turn him into a mid-rotation starter. Kind of a long-reliever/AAA depth for now.

I don’t think I have ever seen such an extreme case of regularly having close to a 10 K/BB ratio and being a homerun pitcher. AJ Griffin is the closest I have seen to this. He is his own species.

More star power signed this year than the off-season prior to 107 wins. Specifically pitching. Aside from regression, the pitching is what truly failed the G-men last year. They have a much deeper pen and a much deeper rotation now.

Hate all you want, but this team can compete in the NL West and most of you will be just like in ’21 when you were trying to figure out how they do it without superstars. The answer is simple, the uptick in production for superstar money turns out to be diminished returns. That is an economics term.
