White Sox Sign Chris Shaw To Minor League Deal

By Simon Hampton | February 11, 2023 at 9:49pm CDT

The White Sox have signed left-handed hitter Chris Shaw to a minor league deal, according to his MLB transaction log.

Shaw, 29, last appeared in the big leagues in 2019 for the Giants. He spent the 2022 season in independent ball, where he hit .264/.401/.459 with 17 home runs for Kentucky.

Originally drafted 31st overall by the Giants back in 2015, Shaw put up good numbers coming up through San Francisco’s farm system. In 2018 he belted 24 home runs at Triple-A at earned his first call-up to the big leagues, slashing .185/.274/.278 in a 22 game stint (62 plate appearances) for San Francisco that year.

He’d start the following season at Triple-A, crushing pitching there to the tune of a .298/.355/.592 line with 21 home runs. Once again though a brief stint in the majors came without success, as Shaw picked up just one hit in 20 plate appearances for the Giants that year.

He was claimed off waivers by the Orioles at the end of 2020. He spent the bulk of the 2021 campaign on the minor league injured list, but picked up just four hits in 74 plate appearances in the minors upon his return and didn’t see any time at the major league level.

The article doesn’t say what position he plays. Not that it matters. The Sox have turned a once promising contender who some in the national media called a WS contender into a team of minor leaguers. This isn’t even a rebuild. It’s a tear down. Because Reinsdorf has no interest in his team and therefore won’t put any money into it, he should sell the team as soon as possible. He already told his heirs to sell it after he dies. Why wait? Sell it now so fans can have a team to be proud of again.

Why did you post this response to a joke?

There aren’t even that many comments, so why hijack this one?

If you want Reinsdorf to sell the team, and he has said that it will be sold after his death; then stop complaining and kill Jerry Reinsdorf yourself and buy the team.

Shaw is an uncommon last name, so undoubtedly he is related to Mike Shaw. In fact, genealogy experts have concluded that all ‘Shaws’ across the northern hemisphere can biologically say they are 2nd cousins.

Shaws used to be heavily concentrated in the usual incestuous states like ohio and Florida, but health officials couldn’t contain their spread in the early 1950s

Surprisingly, White Sox fans are not ready to hear this. We had a lot of injuries last year. Eloy, Luis, Lance Lynn will all be healthy. Garrett Crochet will come back. We have a couple of holes, but we will fill 2B by the trade deadline. I know some teams would love to get their hands on Burger and Sheets.

Rookie of the Year = Oscar Colas
    Cy Young = Dylan Cease
    MVP = Luis Robert

Might be right on Cease. Highly doubt it on the other two. Most unrealistic is that the Sox will decide to meaningfully address the whole at 2B. Best they can hope for is Montgomery slides over or one of the other kids plays much better than expected, but hope isn’t a strategy.

No, but that’s not exactly a recipe for success. Overcoming deficiencies is great, but I’d rather the Sox addresses them.

Barry, the only teams that will want to get their ‘hands on Burger’, are the teams that need depth in their AAA affiliates- or want to use him in their concession commercials.

Meh. Nothing but a depth signing. Sox have talent at most positions, but almost no depth. Stockpiling options isn’t a bad thing, especially on cheap minor league deals.

This team isn’t even worth talking about anymore from, from a 40+ year fan’s perspective. You’d have to adapt a dumbed down perspective like Cubs fans have done for so long in order to find any joy in the White Sox. I’m not doing that. Until Jerry “McScrooge” Reinsdorf slips on a banana peel, this absolute farce will continue on the Southside. Nothing to see here. Nothing to see on the “nortside” either, but Cubs are too passionate about that joke of an organization to care about reality.

I tend to not worry about the beer garden on the north side, it is what it is. I just focus on the business as usual debacle on the south side.

Tired of the fans that cry Reinsdorf doesn’t spend money..they have been top 15 in salary 21-23.. I didn’t see a 2B that was worth overpaying for verses in house solutions and hoping your scouts have it right. Will be interesting to see how they respond to Gridol and if he can get the most out of the Moncadas, Jimenez and Roberts.

The money is spent on poor contracts by a stale FO that is worthless at evaluating talent. If you’ve followed the White Sox closely over the last 40+ yrs you would know why fans are sick of this owner. Look at the Bulls…he let Jerry Krause tear apart a dynasty and allows his FO to repeatedly make the same mistakes over and over because he prefers yes men over winning.

Say what you will about Krause but he was the most effective GM to ever work for Reinsdorf (and lets face it, Krause saw the writing on the wall.. those guys were not getting any younger, and were only to cost more..go out on a high now, not a low one). .
But back to baseball, and Reinsdorf led teams. He and his orgs tend to not like ‘boat rockers’ who care and want to win at all costs.. just yes men. In the case of his basketball team, just not give the young guys enough time (or good enough instructors/coaches) to develop and bring in guys via FA or trade that either: do not like the Bulls (just come to collect their checks), or like their basketball ‘scheme’ at all, or do not fit it.
In the baseball world, his orgs only bring in FA players that were in their prime/good 5 seasons ago (saves a lot that way), and gives out little extension money to younger players who apparently would rather take the money and sit on the bench with their ‘ouchies’ .. when they are not recording terrible songs, or assuming that the entire rest of baseball just bow down to them and anoint them winners without doing a damn thing.

msqboxer, fans like you, you know the koolaid drinkers, are too fixated on the shiny objects to notice what’s really going on with clubs like the White Sox. You’re giving them credit for being “top 15” in spending. lol. Guess what… they’re supposed to be considering the market they play in. And they only spend money on contract extensions and marginal free agent signings—so it’s essentially wasted. The Sox never spend money to bring star players to the southside. Why? Because this owner who’s operated the team since 1981 doesn’t prioritize winning like teams in other large market teams (in smaller markets than Chicago) do. I won’t even go in to how many times this team was close to being the best club in the league, but Jerry refused to add an impact player or two to improve the roster. It’s glaringly obvious what isn’t happening with this organization by now, and who’s SOLELY responsible for it. Keep your eye on the ball, kid.
