The Brewers announced they’ve placed star hurler Brandon Woodruff on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 8, due to shoulder inflammation. Janson Junk has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville to take the vacated active roster spot.
Woodruff is coming off a strong start against the Cardinals on Saturday. He threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings in an eventual shutout win, tallying 84 pitches. He didn’t respond as hoped between appearances, though, and the Brewers will put him on the shelf. Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets that the club is hopeful it’ll be a minimal stint, which would cost him two starts.
The right-hander lost a month last season to a high ankle sprain. He’s never previously spent time on the IL with an arm-related injury as a major leaguer. He’s topped 100 innings in each of the past three full schedules and make a full slate of 13 starts during the shortened 2020 campaign. Woodruff tallied 153 1/3 frames last year in spite of the ankle sprain, taking the ball 27 times.
Woodruff had been tabbed to start tomorrow’s game in Arizona. It now seems that’ll fall to Junk, who’d be making his team debut. Acquired from the Angels in the Hunter Renfroe trade over the winter, Junk opened the year on an optional assignment to Nashville. He’s thrown ten innings of one-run ball there, striking out seven while walking three. The righty started six of seven MLB appearances with the Halos between 2021-22, posting a 4.74 ERA over 24 2/3 frames.

Junk will be exposed on the mound, with a debut involving the one-eyed snakes

Not good! Hopefully Barnes and Lauer can get back on track to help make up for loss of Woodruff. I’m not sure, but hasn’t Peralta has looked pretty good so far this season?
Brewers!
Peralta has had a very strong start to the season, hopefully Burnes can turn things around pretty quickly and Lauer can find his grove

His HR off Clayton Chokeshaw is 1 of the great moments in MLB history.
Longtimecoming
Daniel Camarena, a relief pitcher in his first AB hitting a GS against Scherzer comes to mind as competition.

Woody’s was in the playoffs though.

I had completely forgot about that, thanks for the nostalgia.

That’s 4 SPs to the IL by game 10 for Milwaukee. It wasn’t fathomable after signing Miley the team would ever have issues putting 5an rotation out there. Yet here we are. Burnes struggles tonight you may have to wonder on him.

Yeah a 29 year old rookie reliever hitting a grand slam off of Scherzer was about as unlikely as you could expect. Scherzer has only given up 4 grand slams in his entire long career and one of them was a players only big league hit. The look of utter confusion on his face after he got pulled was priceless!
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Burnes might not be in the best of moods after the salary dispute earlier this year.
Probably counting the days until he’s traded.
Brewer suits handled this poorly.

Isn’t Janson a JUNK – baller ??

Sounded as though Junk has been dealing so far in AAA, so hope he can miss some bats! Go get ‘Em kid!

Pitching is so deep they will not miss him I’m told

Went from a Woodruff-Bumgarner matchup to Junk-Jameson; I feel for you Brewers fans, I truly do.
Take solace in the fact that it’s Drey’s first start after coming out of the bullpen, so there may not be as much length. He has no qualms with throwing over the heart of the plate in unfavorable counts, though; so I hope the Brew Crew are geared up for a mid-high 90’s 4S/SI mix and a feel for manipulating the shape of his Slider (technically he has a Changeup/Curveball as well, they’re just not plus like the other pitches). Expect a lot of challenge pitches lol.
If they do get him out of the game early (which is very possible with a likely lower pitch count), the long reliever RHP Peter Solomon is a AAA R5 pick; so that’s a liability Milwaukee may be able to get to.
Expect to see K. Nelson for more than 1 out, and Chafin/Ginkel in the higher leverage innings (and Ruiz/Vargas again if there’s a large run differential). I’d guess Frias is the option on the higher end of medium leverage situations (and after tonight, Castro would be on the lower end of that same band.)
I didn’t think the Snakes would be playing for a series win, but here’s to hoping for another enjoyable game tomorrow.
P.S. I enjoy good pitching performances, but mainly from the team I follow lol. I’m a bit jealous y’all get to watch Burnes all of the time. He’s electric when he’s on.

Why would Brewers fans care about Bumgarner not pitching?

now instead of facing an over the hill retread with scouting reports since like 2006, theyll face a young and hungry kid whos shown up on prospect lists and is touted as having a future in the rotation. woodruff-bum is a much better name value matchup than junk-jameson

Because being dominated by better pitching at the moment.
