Yankees Recall Oswald Peraza, Place Giancarlo Stanton On 10-Day Injured List

By Nick Deeds | April 16, 2023 at 11:02pm CDT

4:18PM: Stanton has a Grade 2 hamstring strain, ESPN’s Marly Rivera reports (Twitter link). The increased severity of the strain likely means a longer stint on the IL, with Stanton facing perhaps at least a month away.

10:30AM: According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, the Yankees have recalled shortstop Oswald Peraza to the major league club. To make room for Peraza on the active roster, MLB Network Radio’s Jim Bowden notes that Giancarlo Stanton is being placed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, for which he’s set to undergo an MRI this afternoon.

Peraza, 23 in June, made his big league debut for the Yankees last season, impressing with a .306/.404/.429 slash line (good for a 146 wRC+) in 18 games while playing strong defense at both second base and shortstop. Peraza spent spring training battling for the starting shortstop job with the Yankees, though he ultimately lost out on the role to top prospect Anthony Volpe. A consensus top 100 prospect in his own right, Peraza has 502 plate appearances at the Triple-A level across the past three seasons, posting a .263/.331/.434 slash line in that time.

As for Stanton, this hamstring issue is the latest in a series of leg injuries over the past few seasons. Stanton went on the IL twice in 2022, once for a minimum stay due to a calf strain and once for a month due to tendonitis in his left Achilles. Stanton also missed two weeks in 2021 with a quad strain, most of the shortened 2020 season due to a hamstring strain, and most of the 2019 season due to a knee sprain. For a player with Stanton’s injury history, a hamstring issue is of particular concern, though the extent of the injury and a timetable for Stanton’s return to action will not be known until the results of today’s MRI are revealed.

When healthy, Stanton has been long been among the game’s most fearsome hitters. Though he hasn’t quite reached the heights he did with the Marlins (where he posted a 149 wRC+, made four All Star appearances, and won an MVP award from 2012-2017) since his trade to the Bronx, Stanton has still posted a strong 129 wRC+ in a Yankees uniform while clubbing 115 home runs in just 461 games. That being said, he’s seen a downturn in his overall production in recent years, as he has gotten on base at just a 32.7% clip since the start of the 2021 season, including a concerning .297 OBP in 110 games last year. Some of that can be attributed to a deflated .227 BABIP, but it’s also worth noting that Stanton’s 30.3% strikeout rate in 2022 was his highest in a full season since his rookie year.

While Stanton is on the shelf, Peraza seems likely to step into the lineup at second base, allowing Gleyber Torres to fill in for Stanton at DH. Stanton’s injury leaves the Yankees outfield mix in further flux, as Harrison Bader has not yet played for the club in 2023 due to an oblique strain. That leaves reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge as the club’s regular center fielder, while Franchy Cordero, Willie Calhoun, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Aaron Hicks mix and match in the corners.

I’ll give the Yankees a whole lot of credit for giving so many of their prospects opportunities this early in the season. The Cubs on the other hand . . . keep shoving Hosmer and Mancini down our throats. Hosmer hasn’t barreled a ball, all year, yet. And Mancini moves around like he’s ready for a wheelchair.
All while guys like Velasquez and Mervis rake in the minors. Even Mastrobouni would be an improvement.

I’m guessing the Cubs are tanking this year, hoping that a couple of the veterans get hot enough to score some trade deadline returns, all while getting one more year of control over their prospects by keeping them in the minors.

No doc, the Cubs are not tanking this season. They just seem adverse to giving their young players, opportunities. With the payroll being over $200M, and Ricketts being basically cheap – they are not tanking.

How can the payroll be over 200 million yet Ricketts is still “being basically cheap”? Now, if you make an argument that money is not being spent wisely, I’d understand your perspective.

ren – Maybe Ricketts has changed his spending habits?

You’d have to look at the contracts that total the $200M, were they given within the past year or have they been on the books for longer?

John Henry is a perfect example, up until 2018 he spent like a drunken sailor and then he went totally cheap for a few years.

My comment that Ricketts is basically cheap, was because he quit spending around 2018, to help supplement what talent remained.
At that time, he spent more attention and money- building up his empire of Rickettsville. . . oh, and trying to support politicians around the country, that would help his personal agenda.
No, this year he isn’t being cheap.

@Dogbone, I know it’s easy for fans to get frustrated and view an owner as being cheap when the time comes to not spend. That time had came for the Cubs. The World Series winning core was not going to get back over the hump and throwing $ to plug holes in the leaking ship was not enough so they opted to rebuild the ship. They now are at a point they have some young pieces they can start building around. The vast majority of the time contending is cylical and it’s part of the process.

MLB should go to the Japanese ball and be done with checking pitchers. It is so lame checking for cheating every inning, but it;s ok for MLB to juice the ball a couple of years ago This year is the year of the good ole boys club. Wet field in the Super Bowl in Arizona, terrible officiating the NCAAs, and bad umpirig. It must be the betting in the game.

Maybe when asked what was on his hands, maybe German said he was just digging in his shorts… who knows… but he was told to go wash his hands and he came back on the field.

So, if you had May 1st as the predicted date of Stanton’s first DL visit of the season, you lost.
    The Yankees lost.

Stanton and his anvil of a contract remains The Symbol of Failure.[TM}.

Giancarlo Stanton needs to adopt the Ruth diet and conditioning routine. Stop going to the gym and start going to the bar. At least Ruth could play a full season.

He hurt it on the hit he got staring at the ball instead of running. He then turned it on rounding first. The start and stop and start is probably what did him in. At least they can’t blame it on not playing the OF this year as they had him out there more.

best thing long-term might be for gleyber to put up a strong year to increase his off-season trade value. fun to dream of peraza and volpe pulling a trammel-whitaker (who should be in the HOF)

Why not keep Gleyber at 2B and have Peraza, Volpe, and DJL between SS and 3B? DJL isn’t getting any younger and will need more rest. I don’t think Volpe and Peraza are comparable to that tandem defensively imho.

Not fair to compare different time periods, just look at games in the 50’s. I watched Larsen’s perfect game and the hitters had no helmets, and he looked like he was throwing about 80 mph. Todays players are on the whole better.

@dasit- It’s funny you said that. I would offer Gleyber a “Derek Jeter type of contract” right now and see if he accepts it. What do you think? $189 million for 9 or 10 yrs. I think Torres is worth that. Lmk

@bronxmac77- because Torres would definitely be worth that $ on the open market today. If Volpe can play an adequate shortstop, then Peraza could be traded for a bigger need for the Yankees like leftfielder(Reynolds) who doesn’t seem like he’s signing that extension in Pittsburgh, because he wants opt outs in the contract. In my proposed 3 team trade Jesus Luzardo would go the Pirates, with Peraza going to the Marlins, and Reynolds coming to the Yankees. What do you think? Lmk and thnx.

I’d rather keep the two Oz’s, Peraza and Cabrera. The only way I’d get Reynolds is under his current contract. No opt outs. No extensions. Nothing. And I don’t think Gleyber warrants a long extension. He’s been too hot and cold.

I will say this… Part of the reason Torres may be inconsistent is the Yankees trying to force him to play SS. The Yankees keep doing this, with IKF, Gleyber, Urshela… At the MLB level, it doesn’t work! It screws up the defense, and then it impacts the players’ bats because they’re playing out of position.

Not saying my opinion is fact, 99. Just my opinion. By the way, when the Angels play NYY today, old friend Gio Urshela will be there. And he’s doing great in an Angels uniform!

He’ll be out for a month. Stanton is still a dangerous hitter when healthy, but we know he’s going to be injured. More than the missed time, the injuries often degrade his skills when he returns. That’s what happened in 2022. Great start, but his legs were never healthy the 2nd half.

Stanton is just one of those guys. I want to see the kids play more. I’d prefer that Cashman not off-load younger talent, either in the off season or at the trading deadline, to, theoretically, improve their playoff chances. Don’t bring in oft-injured players. Right now, Stanton, Donaldson, Bader, Rondon, Severino, Montas. is $100M right there.

The best move for the Yankees would be to DFA Hicks when Bader returns, there is a chance the Yankees can trade him somewhere if they pick up half of his $30 million, that’s owed to him over the next 3 years, so that team trading for him would pay $15 mill to him over the next 3 years. That seems like a good deal, without the team trading for Hicks having to give up anything of significant value.

If Peraza plays SS, he needs to be great with the glove. If he moves to 2B, he better become a good hitter. It’s possible the Yankees could move Volpe to 2B or 3B and Peraza to SS assuming Volpe becomes a great hitter and Peraza, the better glove.

The funniest thing about it is that the writing was so clearly on the wall with Stanton, yet Cashman predictably and idiotically took on the rest of his contract anyway. He only averaged 127 games (and of course baseball durability doesn’t get better with age) with the Marlins and was already in his late 20s and was 1 of the biggest people in MLB, which is terrible for aging. And what has he produced in NY in the 5 seasons of 2018-2022??? 111 HR, 9 WAR total, and an average of 90 games per season. And now it’s back to the IL yet again. Hahahaha!!!

Cashman is a dried urine stain. Investing that kind of cash in a guy that gets hurt every year from simply running the bases. Stanton is a joke, he was a joke and will be a joke. Cashman is moronic for trading for him. Hal is an idiot for claiming that his spending should equate to a championship yet spends on crap players. And ultimately the fans are jokes for continuing to support a broken product.

You want change? Stop watching for at minimum 1 year.
