Yankees Reinstate Aaron Judge

By Simon Hampton | May 9, 2023 at 12:35pm CDT

May 9: The Yankees announced that Judge has been reinstated from the injured list today, as expected. In a corresponding move, infielder Oswald Peraza was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle sprain, retroactive to May 6.

May 6: Reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge is “on track” to be activated by the Yankees Tuesday ahead of their match with Oakland, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. That would be the earliest possible date Judge can return. Hoch reports that Judge has continued to perform running and hitting drills.

It goes without saying that Judge’s return would provide a huge boost for the Yankees, who find themselves in last place in the AL East and already ten games adrift of the first place Rays. Offense has been a big problem with and without Judge this season in the Bronx, with the Yankees ranking 27th in the sport in hits and 28th in on-base percentage. In Judge’s absence, the likes of Aaron Hicks, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Franchy Cordero have seen regular playing time in the outfield, with all delivering well below average results.

For Judge’s part, he wasn’t quite at the blistering pace he hit at in 2022, but was still enjoying a quality start to the season. Through 26 games, the Yankees captain had a .261/.352/.511 line with six home runs.

The team recently activated center fielder Harrison Bader off the IL, so having both Bader and Judge back in the lineup will make the Yankees’ outfield picture look a bit more promising, although the lack of a clear option in left field remains a concern.

It’s unclear yet who on the current roster will make way for Judge’s return. Jake Bauers would seem a potential candidate, but the team may prefer to give him a longer opportunity to see if he can continue his impressive in Triple-A in the majors. Aaron Hicks continues to struggle this season but his contract makes taking him off the roster a major move. The team could also look to option either Oswaldo Cabrera or Oswald Peraza, two youngsters who are off to slow starts at the plate this season.

Thank goodness we’ll get our .261 hitter who strikes out a third of the time back into the lineup. Look out AL East…we’re comin’ for ya!

What a joke. He’s Chris Davis 2.0, but for even longer.

Judge’s 10.6 WAR last year was almost equal to Davis entire career (11.8).

I pay VERY close attention to this, RSmith. I had two NYY and two RS friends growing up. The RS friends started most of the fight not just then, in the 60s and 70s, but right up until now. I figure last century it was due to all the bitterness caused by decades of futility.

There are currently two NYY fan MLBTR commenter who might make a negative comment in a RS thread, but often there are NONE. RS fans (and other Yankee-haters) talk trash in EVERY SINGLE NYY thread there is.

I pay SPECIFIC attention to this and push back at whyhazee pretty much every time, just to make the point. He is CLASSLESS.

At this point Hicks just needs to be DFA’d regardless of injuries. He embarrasses himself every time he’s in the lineup. It’s unfortunate that they’d have to eat the $30 million owed to Hicks but at this point they’ve given out/taken on enough awful contracts. In the grand scheme of things it’s ripping off a band aid bc that team has several huge contracts that are going to age like milk in the Arizona desert.

They had Bauer out in LF the other day… I could play a better LF than he does. First he gets a late jump, then he gets turned around, then the ball bounces off his glove, then he kicks it. Finally he throws it to the cutoff guy and they almost get the guy out at the plate. It was so close, it had to go to review.
Why can’t the Yankees find a LFer? That’s like the easiest position to field. Heck, Schwarber plays LF and he sucks. Call the Cards… get Nolan Gorman for LF.

“Recency matters” in regards to injuries? So guys get healthier the later into their 30s. Okay, if you say so.

Also, he’s played 26 out of 33 possible games, so he’s on a pace for 128 games this season. That “isnt starting out well”. I guess its not terrible, but its not a good sign either.

What exactly is invalid about RSmith’s projection? It’s simple math based on the future being like the past. What is he supposed to do, factor in the previous year or previous years? By how much? He’s not projecting performance, he’s projecting how often he’s going to show up for work. Not actuarial science. Jeez Louise.

They should curb his running game altogether. He’s a big man and it’s only matter of time before a fielder stumbles on top of him as he’s coming in wide and fast. He’s way too valuable to get hurt trying to steal a base.

Aaron Hicks is either on the Yankees through mid season 2025 or he’s traded for another high cost experiment. He can’t just be let go at his salary. It counts against them. I think Brian Cashman would cut him if he could. Hicks might (or not) play better elsewhere but we’ll never know.
