Astros To Activate Jose Altuve

By Steve Adams | May 19, 2023 at 10:40am CDT

The Astros announced Friday that All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve will be reinstated from the injured list prior to tonight’s series opener against the Athletics. Altuve has not yet played in a game during the regular season after suffering a broken thumb when he was hit by a pitch during the World Baseball Classic. While that fracture ultimately required surgery, Altuve was not placed on the 60-day injured list, meaning Houston won’t need to make a corresponding 40-man move to reinstate Altuve.

The original timetable on Altuve was a two-month recovery period from the surgery, plus some rehab work after that. General manager Dana Brown has said recently, however, that Altuve was ahead of schedule. He’ll indeed return just shy of two months after undergoing surgery on March 22 (and two months, to the day, since the injury itself occurred). He’s played in five minor league rehab games between Double-A and Triple-A, and although he’s gone just 2-for-22 in that time, he and the team clearly feel he’s in a good enough place to return to the big league lineup.

Altuve, 33, had a down year during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season but has since rebounded to elite levels of performance. Over the past two seasons, he’s batted a combined .288/.368/.510 with 59 home runs and 23 steals — including a sensational .300/.387/.533 output in 2022.

In place of Altuve, the Astros have primarily leaned on utilityman Mauricio Dubon, who has exceeded any and all expectations since taking the reins at second base. The former Red Sox/Brewers prospect and Giants utilityman, acquired from San Francisco in a trade for catcher Michael Papierski last May, has taken 156 turns at the plate and turned in a .309/.333/.389 batting line with ten doubles, a triple, three steals and above-average glovework in the field.

Altuve will take over the lion’s share of playing time at second base, but Dubon’s performance has surely been impressive enough that manager Dusty Baker will frequently work him into the lineup at other spots. In addition to his work at second base, Dubon has big league experience at shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions. He figures to spell Altuve and other Astros regulars while moving around the diamond going forward.

The return of Altuve should be a jolt for an Astros lineup that has been surprisingly been below-average. Houston ranks 25th in the Majors with 38 home runs and is tied for 16th with 191 runs scored. Astros hitters rank 16th in batting average (.244), 21st in on-base percentage (.312) and perhaps most surprisingly, 27th in slugging percentage (.377). They’ve received no production whatsoever out of Jose Abreu, who inked a three-year deal worth $58.5MM this winter, and they’ve yet to get a single game out of Michael Brantley, who’s spent the year on the injured list.

A healthy Altuve would certainly lift the Astros’ production across the board, though only time will tell how quickly he can bounce back from that thumb surgery. The eight-time All-Star, six-time Silver Slugger and three-time American League batting champion is in the penultimate season of a $151MM contract extension he signed prior to the 2018 season. He’s being paid $26MM in 2023 and is slated to earn the same salary in 2024 before becoming a free agent — although Brown has said on record multiple times that he hopes to eventually extend Altuve and keep in Houston for the entirety of his career.

As much as I dislike the Astros, I’m confused by this narrative. Everyone from that team has come out to say Altuve, Reddick, and T. Kemp all refused to cheat. I don’t get why Correa, Springer, Bregman, Yuli, etc. don’t receive this type of animosity when they actually cheated. In fact, it’s like everyone completely forgot about Springer cheating and no one seems to be bothered by him.

I’m not a fan of Altuve because I’m a Mariners fan and he kills us, but referring to him as the cheater just sounds like sour grapes.

That is the dumbest reply to his post. Of course he wasn’t there and neither were you. It doesn’t change the fact the team has stated he and others refused to cheat.

Mamss- I wasn’t there, were you? How do you know he didn’t suggest they maybe don’t do it? You don’t. That’s just a fact.

I guarantee you no player would come out against the team paying them while the cheating is happening, so that’s kind of a silly argument.

If there were video — like there was of Altuve holding his shirt that birthed conspiracy theories about a wire — of Springer, Bregman, Yuli then possibly, but that video is fuel to the animosity in a social media-saturated world where it never goes away.

Not saying that’s why, but I believe it’s part the reason.

“Holding his shirt” was birthed because conspiracy theories based it off he refusing to have his shirt ripped off. As if every player is or should be ok with his shirt being ripped off.

Sorry, bhambrave, but you don’t know if he could’ve done more. There very well could’ve been a conversation where he says “bang during my at-bats if you want, but I’m not gonna swing during those bangs” or “ignore the bangs if you want, altuve, but we’re gonna use it”, with a follow-up conversation of “we’re a team no matter what”. We don’t know at all.

Think it’s all a matter of degree. Sounds like Springer was involved, but he made an attempt to admit fault and say my bad- maybe because he was complicit. So the booing is less. Bregman has jerkface and didn’t seem to fess up- which is a shame because he sounds like a really fascinating guy. Think I heard his grandpop was counsel for the old Washington Senators and was active in civil rights and raised his son and grandson to do the right thing. Think Altuve is just a kid- seems kinda like a goofy Sammy Sosa teletubby type. Probably just never occurred to him that he should apologize- and now he’s getting all the wrath. Might be analogous to the Black Sox- relatively innocent guys like Joe Jackson and Buck Weaver, while the actual perpetrators/ring leaders like Gandil skate.

Altuve, Bregman, and Lance McCullers Jr. Are the only players left from the 2017 team.

Teammates have stated that Altuve hated the system, got mad when people banged when he was up, and the “research” revealed the fewest bangs in his at bats.

McCullers was a pitcher and Bregman was a 23 year old in his first full season.

Every Astro player from that team who did not retire was signed by other teams, including Marwin Gonzalez who benefited more than any other player going to both the Red Sox and Yankees who were eliminated by that team.

Nobody in baseball cares anymore. Only fans and media are keeping it alive.

You are exactly correct. Only the fans care and they are woefully ignorant of facts.

All they care about is that their team loses to the Astros and they need an excuse.

And MLB did everything in their power to make it and keep it this way.

They needed to avoid a Black Sox level scandal involving precious big market teams. They needed it confined to a single team to avoid setting baseball back to post steroid, post 1994 strike low popularity levels which would cost owners millions of dollars.

I’m not an Astros fan (but I do like Altuve a lot) he’s proved himself every year (before and after the scandal) that he’s one of the best hitters in baseball. He has nothing else to prove.

But I also find it funny that nobody complains on the Red Sox for cheating from that year, the Yankees for having multiple pitchers get caught with “foreign substances” over the last 5 years, you guys all still love the players from the 90s and early 2000s after getting caught taking steroids and players with corked bats, and every other team (that cheated but didn’t get caught) using technology to steal signs.

The same way you got over all that crap, You guys need to get over the Astros, it’s done, it’s over, it’s old news. They won another WS after that and it was legit.
