Giants To Acquire Jacob Nottingham From Mariners

By Darragh McDonald | May 25, 2023 at 4:15pm CDT

The Giants are acquiring catcher Jacob Nottingham from the Mariners, report Robert Murray and Jeff Young of FanSided. It’s not publicly known what the Mariners will receive in exchange. He’s not on a 40-man roster and won’t require a corresponding move.

Nottingham, 28, was signed by the Mariners to a minor league deal in the offseason. He’s played 17 games for Triple-A Tacoma this year, hitting .200/.294/.450 in that time. He has 53 games of major league experience, spread across the 2018-2021 seasons with the Brewers and Mariners. He hit .184/.277/.421 in 130 plate appearances in those major league contests. Last year, he was with the Orioles on a minor league deal and hit .229/.333/.425 in Triple-A but never got the call to the big leagues. Defensively, he has a tally of +2 Defensive Runs Saved in his brief time in the majors while FanGraphs ranks his framing as just a bit below league average.

The Giants have been shuffling through catchers this year, as they opened the season with Joey Bart, Roberto Pérez and Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol on the roster, the latter of whom also plays some outfield. Unfortunately, Pérez required season-ending shoulder surgery fairly early in the season and Bart has now joined him on the injured list with a groin strain. That leaves them with Sabol and the recently-promoted Patrick Bailey as their duo behind the plate, both of whom are in their first major league seasons. The addition of Nottingham will give the club a veteran depth option to call upon if needed.

Jerry DiPoto is going to have to give Farhan Zaidi a few bargains to make up for fleecing Farhan of Prelander Berroa last year and I don’t think this trade will count.

Prelander Berroa for Donovan Walton was easily the worst trade of Farhan’s career.

But luckily, for every bad trade Farhan has made, he’s made 5 good ones (Yaz, Wade Jr, JD Davis, Thairo Estrada to name a few)

If he’s got such a great trade track record, why are the G-men only 24-25?

If you have any idea what a dumpster fire the Giants were in 2019 when Farhan took over 24-25 in the arguably the toughest division in baseball in 2023 would look pretty good.

Winning 107 games in 2021 was such a double edge sword, because anything less than 95 wins last year would be a major dissapointment. They won 81 games, missed the postseason by 6 games and in reality were probably right on schedule.

In my opinion, right now Farhan deserves big time kudos for not signing Correa for 350 mil or Rodon for 165 mil.

The Giants are NOT in the toughest division in baseball in 2023 unless they suddenly moved to the AL East.

20% of the Giants roster is the result of Farhan Zaidi trades in which they acquired Blake Sabol, JD Davis, Thairo Estrada, LaMonte Wade, and Mike Yastrzemski for Jake Wong, Darin Ruf, Shaun Anderson, and Tyler Herb. Basically 20 WAR for free.

Prelander Berroa trade guy again. 7 years in minors and is all the way up to…drumroll…DOUBLE A!!! But I’m sure he’ll move up quicker for the Mariners once they see that average of 7 walks per 9 innings. How does FZ sleep knowing he made that trade??

Berroa turned 23 last month, he’s a starter with triple digit heat and strikes out 14 per 9 innings. Yep, too many walks but he cracked somebody’s top 100 (Keith Law?) this offseason.

Starter no longer. M’s moved him to the BP as thats the route to the bigs. Top 100? Hes currently M’s #14 prospect. I think he will end up being a good BP piece for the Mariners soon but he still is in AA so to count as the worst trade in someone’s career is a stretch.

If he’s only the Mariner’s #14 prospect then I must’ve misheard about him making someone’s top 100 list. Thanks for the info.

he can walk in runs, but K’s 2-3 per inning because batters don’t know what is coming much like Berrroa.

          He’s not a top 100 prospect

Prelander Berroa is in AA within TEX organization and has massive control problems.
23 BB in 29 IP this year. Last year, split between several levels with 63 BB in 100IP

Donovan Walton didnt show much in MLB but to say its his worst trade then that aint bad.

        Since transferring to the bullpen:
        5 appearances, 7.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 12 K
Small sample, but I think the control problems will be helped by moving to relief.

While hopefully he’s the next Luis Castillo, I’m afraid it looks like a wash for both with that 7 BB/9 he’s got. A 14 K/9 isn’t much when it amounts to just a 2:1 K/BB ratio. G’s we’re desperate for defensive versatility, and hoped they’d hit on a low risk move. As of now, they’ve gone from a bottom feeding Defense to an average one. Sure it would’ve been nice if Walton was the new Donovan Solano or LaMonte Wade(who was also acquired for a once promising pitcher in Shaun Anderson) but I don’t think Prelander will be anything special for at least a few years, if at all. There’s gotta be a statute of limitations on this sort of stuff, right?

I don’t mean to sound negative, but honestly, the articles they post here, 95% of the time nowadays, I have no idea who these players are lol. I feel like 2 to 3 years ago they always covered interesting and hot topics. Now it’s just like 80% boring filler to keep their ratings up lol

Isn’t there a misogynistic poster on this site under the name Nottingham who always attacks Kim Ng for signing Jorge Soler and Avisail Garcia. Looks like those signings have bounced back because right now Soler is hitting enough for two dudes! The issue with the Fish is not Ng nor was it Jeter or even Mattingly. It is ownerships unwillingness to spend more broadly.

Please don’t confuse what a player does over 30% of a season as being enough to make up all of last years poor showing. I’m glad Solar has been on a hot streak, but that still does not make up for last years wasted money. No one will know if it was a good signing until the contract plays out. Right now I don’t see the Marlins giving him a QO, assuming they could.

Something had to surface with Nottingham, he was like a pair of extra shoe laces as is value was less than trade worthy. It does question what the intention was in bringing him on board in the first place, other than a past reunion were as both sides were comfortable with each other.

One more time, something curious about Nottingham it almost seems that he hasn’t had opportunity enough to show better results. His defense seems to
be intact. Admittedly I don’t know a lot about his past history but it appears to me that not unlike players who get off to a slow start they languish like fruit left on the tree. I think he can do better if he turns the dial up with more opportunity/ dedication otherwise………
