White Sox Activate Jake Burger, Option Carlos Perez

By Nick Deeds | May 14, 2023 at 1:55pm CDT

According to The Athletic’s James Fegan, the White Sox activated infielder Jake Burger from the 10-day injured list today, and optioned catcher Carlos Perez to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Burger’s return creates something of a logjam in Chicago’s infield, as the 27-year-old slugger has gotten off to a torrid start in 2023, slashing .224/.312/.612 in 23 games prior to landing on the injured list. While normally a whopping 146 wRC+ would assure any player regular playing time on a struggling club such as the White Sox, Yoan Moncada has been equally stellar so far this season with a .319/.333/.574 slash line that’s been good for a 147 wRC+.

Both Burger and Moncada are primarily third basemen by trade, though Fegan notes that manager Pedro Grifol has indicated that the third base job is Moncada’s. While both players have some experience at second base, where Hanser Alberto is currently playing while regular starter Elvis Andrus is on the injured list, Grifol notes that neither Moncada nor Burger is expected to play second base. Rather, Grifol suggests that Burger will get most of his at-bats as a DH, filling in for Eloy Jimenez while he recovers from his recent appendectomy. Beyond that, Burger will fill in at third on Moncada’s off days and also spend some time at first, where Andrew Vaughn is the primary starter.

Heading out to make room for Burger is Perez, who appeared in just three games for the White Sox to back up Seby Zavala while veteran backstop Yasmani Grandal dealt with a back injury that limited his ability to play. With Grandal seemingly ready to return to action, Perez will return to Triple-A and continue to serve as upper-level catching depth going forward.

I don’t know why the Sox wouldn’t give Burger playing time at 2B. Are they suddenly prioritizing defense?

That’s another problem with the Sox. Jimenez, Grandal, Sheets and Burger are all DH’s. But I’m glad to have Burger’s home run bat back.

Yaz has improved considerably now that he’s in better shape than the last few years. Always an excellent pitch framer, but now that he has legs under him, throwing guys out. And Eloy has improved in the field. But yeah, too many of the same skill set. Think they have to eventually trade off Burger or Sheets (I’d actually trade Vaughn as I prefer Sheets lefty bat).

    Sorry, folks. Pharmor was arrested.
I had to call the police on him at the WalMart parking lot in Evergreen Park. He was wearing his authentic 2022 Reese McGuire jersey.

That happened to be my twin . I was actually at Portillos on canal in the south loop. I actually ran into Jake as he was eating a double polish with fries. Hard to believe Jake wasn’t eating a burger. He knew I was a Sox’s fan as I was wearing my 1982 Billy Almon jersey . Still fits after all these years.

The scary thing is the more places you rattle off, the greater likelihood one of us is gonna run into you and Ralph Garr. Like what if we’re at the Superdawg reading the post as you’re leaving. Can you live stream your experiences?

What? 35 what? Are you bragging about about having an established streaming account that has less than 50 followers?? What are you streaming? Let me watch!!!

Honestly, give me your handle and I’ll subscribe. I feel bad but also a little hopeful. If we get you to 50 followers will you post your stream here? If you get up to 100 you need to show your bhole, that’s the law.

    @getoff maybe I just don’t get mankind.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word
itself: “Mankind”. Basically, it’s made up of two separate words –
“mank” and “ind”. What do these words mean ? It’s a mystery, and that’s
    why so is mankind.

Yeah if you’re not from Alabama like the 2 guys in question you should probably refrain from “but it was only a joke”. Hint: the instigator is the one who has been let go by team after team, leaving former teammates to say good riddance.

What’s the point if he did reveal his “closeted homosexuality”. Are you still in 7th grade? Trying to bully people hiding behind a series of screen names? Don’t think you’re long for this thread. Keep changing screen names though, I’m sure Tim and team will find a way to spot you even if it involves playing whack a troll

Geez based on the Madrigal comment- I hope this loser isn’t a Cub fan. Sox and Cub fans like to rib each other and know what buttons to push from experience ribbing friends/neighbors/colleagues. At the end of the day Cub fans are a fun lot. But Wrigley Field has a scary history of drawing hecklers who like to freely use the N word. Something about the tendency to draw tourists who don’t have roots in the community and feel free to spout without feeling consequences. Just Google.

Wow, must have missed a large troll in the message section… Anyway. Glad Burger is back, an Oppo field homer last night is a welcome site as well, and that Moncada, and Robert, appear to be more driven to perform unlike seasons past, but lets see how long this keeps up. These two guys have immense talent, but I have always said its a matter of motivation/heart/will;; (whatever you want to call it) for these core guys..
One has to wonder if Grifol actually had a sit down with these guys at some point, especially since Robert started doing better after that whole ‘playing when injured’ and reportedly ‘not knowing his bench coaches name’ flaps and Moncada has been performing well (sans injuries) since before the season with the world tournament (or whatever Baseball calls it)…and we saw a Lance Lynn sighting last night as well, and not the BP pitcher posing at him at the beginning of the season. That said, still too many holes in the lineup, pitching staff, and -most importantly- the standings. Even if they perform better, Im not sure this team has the ability or energy to dig themselves out of that hole and still have enough to play to that level for the rest of the season (and they still have yet to show they can beat good teams, heck they got beaten up by the Royals) However, if these guys perform to expectations they can at least be flipped for the next gen of players for Hahn and company’s ‘next window for winning’.

Moncada needs to move back to 2B when Jimenez returns. Grifol is an utter moron if he sits the only guy who has consistently hit the ball hard this season.
