Craig Counsell To Depart Brewers For Club With Existing Manager

By Darragh McDonald | November 6, 2023 at 12:22pm CDT

Manager Craig Counsell is departing the Brewers but won’t be joining the Mets, as many had expected. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that he is joining an unidentified team that already has a manager in place.

It had been reported in recent weeks that Counsell had been drawing widespread interest, as his contract with the Brewers just expired after the 2023 season. He interviewed with the Guardians and Mets and garnered interest from the Astros, though a return to the Brewers seemed to still be possible. However, today has brought a series of surprising twists, with the Guardians hiring Stephen Vogt, the Mets bringing aboard Carlos Mendoza and Counsell apparently departing for some mystery club that doesn’t even have a current vacancy.

Shortly after this post was published, the mystery team was revealed to be the Cubs. Find more details in this post.

I’m betting it won’t be the M’s. We have too much tied into JD/Servais, plus the players would revolt. Considering they’ve already been unhappy with personnel moves, I doubt ownership/FO wants to further alienate the roster.

Servais is a such a bad manager. You guys need to drop him.

What is your evidence for suggesting he is such a bad manager? Bullpen management? Because that’s pretty much the only insight fans have into how good or bad a manager is.

    My guesses:
    1. Marlins (seems like something they would do).
    2. Cardinals (makes sense, current manager sucks)
    3. Cubs

    Longshot: Phillies

Phillies got to Game 6 of the WS last year and Game 7 of the NLCS this year. Why would Dombro fire Thomson?

That’s quite odd. If you follow the language of the tweet, a logical conclusion would be that he could be the new bench coach for the Yankees. I’d be very worried if I were Aaron Boone.

Once again the writer’s rumor mill proves to be wrong and the “mystery team” swoops into make the writer’s look like fools again.

Why does anyone read their articles? It’s all a money making gimmick for you to read their articles.

CC gets big cheese and stays in the Midwest. Has a tough job, but the suits know it, so he’ll have a long leash.

Might not have been that long of a leash in NY. Mets wanna win now. Cohen downplays ’24 as a transition year, but that guy didn’t become rich being content to finish second or third!

Cubs will sign some FA and grab a wild card slot this year. Should have had one last year but Ross came up short at crunch time. Not surprised Cubs are moving on from him.

Astros would be foolish to not go find Jim Hickey and hire him as the new manager.
