Eloy Jimenez Receiving Trade Interest

By Mark Polishuk | November 17, 2023 at 1:23pm CDT

The White Sox have been getting some calls about slugger Eloy Jimenez, GM Chris Getz told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers (X link) and other reporters today.  There isn’t a sense that a deal might be close or that the Sox are truly inclined to shop Jimenez, but “teams are interested,” Getz said.  “It just has to make sense for both sides.”

Getz’s meeting with the media (including USA Today’s Bob Nightengale) also included a reiteration of the GM’s openness for talks, as he stated “I’ve made it very clear that the White Sox are willing to listen in on any of our players.”  This follows Getz’s statement from earlier this month, when he noted that there “are no untouchables” on the Chicago roster.  We saw some evidence of this last night, when the Sox dealt Aaron Bummer to the Braves for a package of five players.

Moving Jimenez would be another matter altogether, given his higher profile as a would-be franchise cornerstone.  Signed to a six-year, $43MM deal before he’d even made his MLB debut, Jimenez has hit .275/.324/.487 with 89 homers over 1777 plate appearances in five seasons.  With a 118 career wRC+, Jimenez has certainly been good, and he has shown some flashes of greatness at the plate with particularly good numbers in 2019 and 2022.

However, Jimenez’s production has been limited by injuries, and his 122 games and 504 PA from his 2019 rookie season remain his career high for playing time.  The White Sox have given Jimenez an increasingly large share of DH time over the last two years in an attempt to keep him healthy, and this might’ve worked to a limited degree in 2023, when he made 489 PA over 120 games.  Jimenez still missed over a month of the season, but that was mostly due to a one-off issue of an appendectomy.  Still, Jimenez didn’t hit particularly well, with a modest 105 wRC+ from 18 homers and a .272/.317/.441 slash line over his 489 PA.

Because Jimenez debuted in the majors as a 22-year-old, he has still yet to reach his true prime years, as he turns 27 later this month.  The White Sox owe him $13MM in 2024 and then hold club options on his services for the following two seasons, with values of $16.5MM in 2025 and $18.5MM in 2026 (with $3MM buyouts on both options).  That makes him a nicely affordable player if he can ever stay healthy and extend his 143 wRC+ from his 327-PA 2022 season over the course of a full year.

These three years of control over Jimenez might not necessarily put him within Chicago’s timeline, however.  Despite Getz’s comments about the roster and the fact that the White Sox are reportedly planning to reduce payroll, there isn’t yet a sign that the Sox are actually going to rebuild in the traditional sense.  At the time of Getz’s hiring, owner Jerry Reinsdorf was adamant about wanting to deliver another winning team, so another retooling doesn’t appear to be in the works.

Moving Bummer allowed the ChiSox to address multiple roster holes, and a Jimenez trade could conceivably work the same fashion should Getz find a suitable offer on the table.  In some sense Jimenez’s value has been lowered by his lackluster 2023 season, yet it isn’t surprising that teams are interested considering his age, contractual control, and perhaps the sense that a change of scenery is needed for Jimenez to hit his potential ceiling.

Wouldn’t mind seeing the Pads pick up Eloy if they move Soto. May be tough with Manny needing the DH spot to start the year. Got to imagine supporters of just about every team would be happy to add Eloy’s bat to their lineup.

Soto really shouldn’t play a role if they could use him or not. Soto isn’t going to dh anyways, I guess if you are looking at it from a money shift then okay.

Problem is the padres need another lefty bat with Soto. Of the padres traded Soto we would very little power from the left side. This why I don’t think Soto gets moved.

Also think the padres will add some pitching via trades. Maybe one of Bieber, burns or glasnow. Then add a 4-5 starter that’s paid less. Need to add a lefty starter as well.

Yes, but —though it’s not mentioned in the post— everything I’ve read is that Jimenez is a clank glove in he OF. Any White Sox fans want to confirm or deny?

Move him over to 2nd base. He’s bad a few seasons batting .290 that’s gold imo.

If LA can swing a trade and switch positions or work on his defense I think he can be valuable on a winning team

He’s a DH that has a history of injuries. Might become a healthier player with another organization that has better trainers, but the guy can hit when he’s healthy. That’s the catch, so it all depends how much another team is willing to offer.

career 5.4 fWAR over 1,777 PA, on a $43 million contract. HR ability is offset by lack of walks and groundouts. Cant play defense and cant stay healthy.

But for some reason is still going to fetch a quality prospect in return because GMs dig the long ball.

Then you aren’t very bright. All I am saying is that 1 of 30 teams will be intrigued by his former prospect star, his 30 hr and .300 potential. Not that I think he will ever be great, just that a 27 year old who has hit 31 hrs in a season, .296 and .296 in other seasons and a career 118 ops+ will get interest.

As a Sox fan, I LOVE Eloy, and think he will at some point have a 40 HR, .280 season. But if they get someone who can stay on the field and play a bit of defense, I’m probably ready.

If the blue jays are truly interested in a Pure or almost pure DH, i like Eloy and nick Castellanos. Nick purely from a value stand point as you could get him for about 8-10 mil a year likely for a top 10 org prospect. I think Eloy is in that same range to but Teoscar Hernandez would be a nice fit aswell

The Jays are precisely the team I’d target tin any deal for Eloy with were I the SOX GM. Orvelis Martinez is a 21yo power first infield prospect that could be a decent match, although Manoah would be my true target.

Eloy missed 21 games due to an appendectomy. That is not an injury. Missed games yes, but not an injury. The Sox have been woeful in getting a good DH and he is perfect for the part. As for trading for prospects. we tried that it didn’t work out so well. Instead of trying to get good free agents with a proven track record we tend to go for low level FA and hope they do well. That hasn’t worked out either. But somehow the White Sox braintrust seems to think they can keep doing what they have been doing and it WILL all work out. So sure cut the payroll and see if you can get lucky. In the process they will prove Getz is just like Hahn and Williams before him.

The Cardinals need his kind of pop in the lineup. But they already have issues keeping their outfielders healthy. And he’s still young and not quite full established, so they’d probably try and change his swing and approach.

Meh. Strictly a DH with a career .811, at $14M. I think SD is a decent fit, but they have other competing needs for that type of money.

Either that or the Rox or Angels because that’s what the Rox and Angels do.

Can we fire Getz just for saying “it has to make sense for both parties” . It just has to make sense for the team you’re the GM for. Outside of that..the guy is still 26 years old, talented, but I’d trade him in the right deal so I don’t have to look at him with his jersey half unbutton and laughing on the bench when your team loses 100 games.

I think this only ends in one way sadly:
The Sox give Eloy up to an organization who will motivate him to reach his potential (as he was way too coddled in the Sox org) and tinker with his swing so he stops being the singles hitter the Sox.. ahem… ‘coaches’ made him to be. Also, they get nothing back for him. Even if they get ‘upper tier’ prospects this org will not develop them and they will be busts.
Team GMs should be salivating at dealing with Getz if everything he learned was from Rick Hahn or Kenny Williams.
Hopefully Getz and this ‘new’ org will prove me wrong, but that is how I feel any real fan of this club should feel at this point though. I just fail to see how the last guy standing from the last pathetic org will somehow be better than that.If there is any hope I hope Im wrong and he turns out to be a good GM.
