Rangers Win World Series

By Leo Morgenstern | November 1, 2023 at 10:10pm CDT

With a 5-0 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night, the Rangers claimed their first World Series championship in franchise history. They took the series four games to one, splitting the first two contests at Globe Life Field in Texas before winning all three at Chase Field in Arizona.

The franchise was established in 1961 as the Washington Senators, before moving to Arlington in 1972. The Rangers won back-to-back AL pennants in 2010 and ’11 but lost in the World Series both years. They held the second-longest championship drought in baseball, a title that now falls to the Brewers, who have not won a World Series in their 55-year history. The Guardians, having last won a World Series in 1948, still hold the longest championship drought in the game at 75 years and counting.

Including Milwaukee, there are now just five franchises that have yet to win a World Series: the Brewers, Padres, Mariners, Rockies, and Rays.

The Rangers took fate into their own hands over the past two seasons, signing stars like Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Jacob deGrom, and Nathan Eovaldi to large contracts to accelerate their competitive window. They burst out of the gate in 2023, going 17-11 (.607) in April and 52-39 (.571) in the first half. General Manager Chris Young remained aggressive at the trade deadline, adding Max Scherzer and Jordan Montgomery to replenish a depleted rotation. The moves paid off, and the Rangers finished 90-72 with a +165 run differential. Although they lost the division crown on a tiebreaker, they swept their way to the ALCS and dethroned the Astros in a thrilling seven-game series. Just two years removed from a 102-loss season, the Rangers are World Series champions.

Seager was named World Series MVP for his dominant offensive performance against Arizona. In five games, he smacked three home runs, driving in six. The star shortstop led all players in the World Series in Win Probability Added (WPA), scoring a run in all four Texas victories. Overall, he hit .318 with a 1.133 OPS in the postseason. It is his second time winning World Series MVP honors, after previously taking home the award in 2020 with the Dodgers.

Additional hitters from the championship team who merit special recognition for their postseason performance include Adolis García and Evan Carter. On the pitching side, Montgomery and Eovaldi offered particularly praiseworthy performances, as did Josh Sborz and José Leclerc. García led the team with eight home runs and a whopping 22 RBI throughout the playoffs, taking home ALCS MVP honors. Unfortunately, his postseason ended early after an oblique strain in Game 3. Carter, the rookie phenom, was an integral part of the team’s offense despite making his MLB debut this past September. He is only 21 years old.

Eovaldi made six starts across the four series, going 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA. Montgomery was similarly dominant, appearing in six games (five starts) and posting a 2.90 ERA of his own. Meanwhile, Leclerc and Sborz were a lethal combination out of the bullpen. Leclerc, the longest-tenured player on the roster, was reliable as ever, pitching in 13 contests and putting up a 3.29 ERA. Sborz, for his part, showed up seemingly out of nowhere, tossing 12 innings and giving up just one run, good for a 0.75 ERA. Over the past three years with Texas, he has a 4.98 ERA. However, his underlying numbers have long suggested he is better than his ERA, and with his performance this postseason, he proved that to be true.

Manager Bruce Bochy collects his fourth World Series title, having won with the Giants in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Funnily enough, his Giants beat the Rangers to win it all in 2010. The long-time manager came out of retirement to join the Rangers in 2023, a surprising move at the time, but clearly a shrewd decision.

With the World Series wrapped up, it’s time for the offseason to officially begin. Teams can start making trades on Thursday, and they will be able to sign free agents on Monday. That’s also the deadline for teams to make option decisions, to issue qualifying offers, and to add players from the 60-day injured list back to the 40-man roster. The non-tender deadline is November 17.

Why do writers continually pretend that the “Indians” never existed. It’s sad really. The Guardians did not win a World Series in 1948. But the Indians sure did.

Why do the history books say blacks were slaves. That’s not what they called them back then. Remedy past injustices.

        Long live the Guardians.

Manny – I totally agree about remedying past injustices, but that’s kind of a bad example. You’re comparing the official name of a professional sports franchise at that time to a slur that was meant to be hurtful. Not nearly the same thing.

And BTW – why does Baseball Reference, the HOF and everyone else refer to the “Negro Leagues” instead of changing it to the African American Leagues or the People of Color Leagues? Why is it still the NAACP?

Leo is a rookie writer who made a simple mistake, instead of writing “the Guardians” he should have written “the Guardians franchise” or “the Cleveland franchise”. He’ll get better as he learns.

I didn’t do anything to the Native Americans.

And no living Brits did anything to me, though their behavior was pretty bad to my ancestors.

The one thing no one seems to get over, or want to get over, is that everyone abused everyone. I’m guessing that every country on earth has probably been invaded by their neighbors.

The main problem with calling the 1948 team the Guardians is, it is simply not factual.

They didn’t call the 1948 team the guardians.

“The guardians [franchise] haven’t won the World Series since 1948” is what that statement is saying, and that’s correct.

The sentence is about what current team has the longest drought, and like it or not that’s the Guardians.

If the sentence were about the specifics of the 1948 World Series it would be appropriate to talk about what the Indians did that year.

          Neat “fact”, @Silas.

          From a published, peer-reviewed 2020 study from U of Michigan and Cal-Berkeley:
“Among Native Americans who frequently engage in tribal or cultural practices, 67 percent find the Redskins team name offensive; 70 percent find sports fans wearing chief headdresses offensive; 65 percent find sports fans chanting the tomahawk chop offensive; and 73 percent find sports fans imitating Native American dances offensive.”

If that’s too egg-headed for you, here is this from the National Congress of American Indians:
“As the nation’s oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native advocacy organization, NCAI has long held a clear position against derogatory and harmful stereotypes of Native people—including sports mascots—in media and popular culture”

Tribal leaders all across the US have been very clear for decades now that Native mascots are offensive.

Mr Eighty, as a proud Seminole it gave me great joy to see Marcellus Osceola Jr. plant the spear at midfield before the FSU Homecoming game a few weeks ago. The university goes to great lengths to work with the tribe to insure respectful use of regalia and traditions. People like you like to go around spreading misinformation to fit your misguided narratives. I can assure you Native Peoples do not need or want your help. You see racists around every corner maybe it’s you that should seek help. Have a blessed day.

If you are indeed a proud Seminole, you would know that the other two, much larger Seminole nations vociferously disagree with FSU’s name and mascot. Your tribe doesnt even speak for all Seminoles, so what makes you think you speak for all American Indians? Racists lost. The names got changed. Because they were offensive.

Please point out one piece of misinformation I shared. I actually gave direct quotes and a title of another academic paper.

What is funny is that I am half mexican and my mom’s side has Native American/Indian heritage as well. My family is relatively successful and does not care about these ridiculous nomenclatures. In my experience the ones who are always crying and talking about these so called injustices are the laziest, least hard working people who are chronically online and never left their hometown. For example some of my cousins are like that. Always posting about things that are “disrespectful” and racist but have never actually done anything worthwhile.

Hot take? Idk but I just think it is all so ridiculous to get so worked up about.

@Redstitch108* 2 The sentence in questions says “The Guardians, having last won a World Series in 1948, still hold the longest championship drought in the game at 75 years and counting.”

Basic syntax. The sentence is saying that the Guardians hold the longest championship drought, which is 100% true.

It doesn’t say “back in 1948 when the Guardians won the World Series”. If it were worded that way your point would apply.

It’s just a shortcut in writing when discussing franchises. They didn’t mention the Seattle Pilots or the Devil Rays, either.

Just imagine how awkward it would be if you had to be precise with MLB franchises whenever discussing their complete histories, especially some of the old franchises with several city or nickname changes like the Brooklyn Bridegrroms/Grooms/Superbas/Dodgers/Robins/Dodgers / Los Angeles Dodgers or the Philadelphia/Kansas City/Oakland/Future Las Vegas Athletics. Even the expansion Angels are a mess in that regard!

Saying, “why can’t we get guys like that” about a player that used to be on your team is an Old School baseball wisecrack. I think it comes from a manager in the ‘60’s or ‘70’s, but I don’t recall specifically.

Nate is probably the last remaining workhorse in the game, he proves it all the time. He’s an old school big game pitcher who threw 180 innings this year and 203 innings in 2021.

How many other pitchers have thrown 493 innings the past 3 seasons?

True but he has heart issues. I’m glad he came back as he’s great for baseball but surprised he did. I think it’s really how he get treated by the FO that decides if he stays or not, and I am not referring to money, he likely doesn’t want to hear FZ and his excuses for fielding garbage teams and claiming sabermetrics makes all things equal. That’s gotta be insulting to a old school guy like Bochy. Just an assumption on my part, after years of listening to how Bochy saw the game in interviews when he was with SF.

Kapler is easily better than Bochy. Took a very similar roster and won 15-20 more games on average.

Kap almost always finds the platoon advantage, optimizes the lineup perfectly, never extends arms, etc.

Bochy basically ruined Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner and Peavy. All were toast by 28. Go look up Lincecum’s pitch counts in the second half of his rookie year – Bochy allowed him to exceed 115 pitches TEN DIFFERENT TIMES. Should have been spot-fired after the first time

This is a very measured and reasonable take from a person who clearly isn’t taking it personally that our Giants currently suck horse dung through a rusty pipe. Get some rest, buddy. We’ll try again next year with more of Farhan’s injury discount guys that magically get injured again (wow who could’ve seen that coming?) and utility bat castoffs. I’m just not sure what Bochy did to hurt you or his SF players (who are currently wearing rings btw which is why you play in the first place no matter how many pitches you throw) but St. Bruce isn’t going anywhere but the HoF.

Congrats to the Rangers and also to the Diamondbacks. MLB continues to have the greatest parity in teams competing for championships and winning them despite a few franchises never trying. I hope that MLB can figure out the pitching problem so WS aren’t marred by questions of how teams can manage to get a staff through 7 games to finish the series.

Congrats to the Rangers, from a diehard Dbacks fan.

I want to say that I almost always credit the pitcher for shutting down the other teams’ offense, but tonight Eovaldi did not pitch well enough to be credited. He admitted himself after giving up 5 walks and 4 hits, that he didn’t have his best stuff. The Dbacks lost this game because their offense totally disappeared. I blame the Dbacks offense tonight rather than crediting Eovaldi. No sour grapes just reality.

Yeesh. This was an ugly World Series. Always sad to see a Cinderella run end, but really, aside from an exciting game 1, this was a snoozefest. I’m not really criticizing the DBacks here either. Sometimes that’s just baseball. DBacks swept the Dodgers and had a huge comeback series against Philly. No small task.

I don’t understand why it was such a snoozfest to you, “outside game 1.”

I can get if you just don’t like the teams, but, I saw some good entertaining games with guys stepping up to take advantage of miscues, rallys to get back into things even if they fell short, plays at the plate, heck, tonight there was a no-hitter through 6 innings and a 1-0 duel headed into the 9th.

It’s pretty simple to understand: they were not competitive games outside of game 1. That’s upsetting as a baseball fan. This doesn’t take anything away from Texas or Arizona. Both deserved to be there, but from an entertainment standpoint, this was boring. It wasn’t about disliking the teams. It just wasn’t competitive. Plain and simple.

No, 8 innings. In what world is a one run lead not competitive, especially when it was the other team that had provided almost all of the offense before that point?!

The end result still doesn’t change how almost the entire game was close and exciting.

I never once felt like the DBacks were going to take that game. When it was 1-0, I felt like the DBacks were dead. The crowd was dead. The DBacks were playing tight. But whatever, I’ll give it to you. In 5 games we saw 18 competitive innings. 10 in game 1. 8 in game 5. That’s still a pretty boring world series. Not bashing either team. I just wish it was closer.

Games 2-4 were blowouts, sure, but last night was full of drama. DBacks looked like they were on the verge of breaking it open for the first 5 innings, only for Eovaldi and the Rangers to find a way to shut them down. Gallen pitched 5 perfect innings and took a no hitter into the 7th. Despite all of the DBacks pressure, the game was 1-0 in the 9th before the Rangers closed the deal. If that qualifies as a snoozefest for you then I’m not sure what you’re looking for.

You nailed it in your first sentence: Games 2-4 were blowouts. There were never any lead changes outside of Game 1. Not once did I think Texas was winning game 2. Not once did I think Arizona was winning games 3-5. Game 1 was fantastic. The rest was lacking drama. Game 5 was a great pitching duel, but I never really thought the DBacks were going to blow it open. Sure they threatened a bit, but never enough to wow me. Texas and Arizona fans shouldn’t take this as an insult. In fact, it’s super impressive how dominant Texas was, but as a fan of baseball with no rooting interest in these teams, I was disappointed in the lack of drama and excitement. In fact, outside of the ALCS and NLCS, every series was rather lopsided this year.

Arizona absolutely could’ve won Game 5 instead! In fact, they were quite a bit more likely to do so during the first half of the game when they threated A LOT, not just a bit.

If you say so. I never saw a huge threat, even with runners on base. Texas pitched around threats and got the outs they needed. They won Game 5 by 5. Most of the scoring came late, but as soon as Texas scored, it felt like the game was over.

Yeah, Texas had to pitch around a lot of threats, while their offense provided almost no threats at all during the first 6 innings. At that point, it looked like Arizona would probably score first and win the game, and even after Texas managed a run, a comeback still looked decently likely until the Rangers put it away in the 9th.

One of the worst World Series I’ve ever watched. Outside of 2020 (which I don’t count), this was probably the most boring one since the Whitesox won in I believe 2005 (could be wrong). The Ranger’s bullpen was a complete dumpster fire all year and yet they still won. I’m still a believer that a good bullpen is required to win a World Series, outside of this one victory. I mean Jose Leclerc and Josh Sborz are not even , in my opinion, major league calibur pitchers and yet they performed good enough for the Rangers to win. Poorly constructed team with money spent on the wrong players (Degrom, Scherzer, Semien overpaid). The Montgomery trade basically saved their whole season

I agree with it being an awful World Series, but you lost me with that other nonsense. It’s not Texas’ fault the series was awful. DBacks upset 2 better teams, and you could argue that was more the Dodgers and Phillies choking than the DBacks winning. It’s like a low seed getting into the NCAA finals and getting run over by a superior team.

Von – OR MAYBE the Dodgers were over-rated since they haven’t won a ring during a full season since 1988. You don’t go into Philly and beat a superior team without talent and luck. Arizona had both and deserved the win as much as I hated seeing it. I thought Philly-Texas were the two best teams thanks to the two best GMs in baseball.

Oh don’t get me wrong, you don’t go to the series on luck alone. DBacks earned their spot. I just wish they had a better showing in the series. It was completely non-competitive and as a non-fan of either team, it waa the worst series in recent memory.

The Dodgers just lost too much of their starting pitching to injury. It’s the same reason the Cardinals were able to beat the otherwise much better Mets team in the 2006 NLCS, except those Cardinals actually went on to pull off a huge upset in the World Series over the hugely favored Tigers.

Also, the Rangers ran through a GAUNTLET of the AL’s best teams to get there. The Rays, the Orioles, and in case you forgot, the AL and the World Series has run through Houston for years, and they capped it off by winning 6 and 7 in Houston. They kicked everyone in their junk and deserve this moment on top.

Well, lucky for the Rangers the Mets are still paying most of Scherzer’s salary, so deGrom is the only bad signing they’ve made. The rest of your post is just salty nonsense. Yes, the Rangers’ bullpen was bad during the regular season, but that’s because it was very shallow talent-wise. When you get to the playoffs, with the extra rest, bullpen depth isn’t as important. They also had the luxury of moving starters into the pen to eat up innings when needed, and Gray and Dunning both did good work there.

No one expected this team to go to World Series they were still two years away according to the front office. For all the people trying to say he is an old school and against analytics, please understand that the Rangers hired the data geek that started Baseball Savant, the site that has developed some of the most advanced analytics. Chris Young is an Ivy League graduate who was using advanced analytics as a pitcher with the Padres years ago.

Bochy is a great leader whose presence makes up for everything else, but he has made many bad moves, like hitting Grossman instead of Garver (no injury) vs RHP, hitting Semien 1st all season and postseason, not resting Semien, hitting Carter 9th, etc. He just makes up for it.

Me too. It’s just sad what MLB has done here, all in a pathetic effort to chase down ratings to take back its market share from the NFL…and people still aren’t going to watch.

I just hate what this time of the season brought. You get every talking head who couldn’t be bothered with the game until now coming on with their choker/hero hot takes, no of who care/bother to care that every team looks like a World Series winner and the worst team in the league at some point in every season, but that doesn’t matter when you can get all sweaty faced in front of a camera and say who’s a choker for clicks.

MLB bending over backward to change the rhythm of the season to make sure everyone could see a playoff game, regardless if that mean shoving it in a 3pm slot on a weekday when shadows will certainly creep in to affect things, because again, ratings and money. It works for the NFL because they’re only playing one and dones, honestly, if people really want to watch games they’ll be there, why do you have to screw with the timing. If my team is in, I’ll see you at 7pm like every other game this season. You could even do a wrap around show like Redzone, since most casual fans are only going to care about the homers anyway. I’m not going to sit there and watch EVERY playoff game, maybe check in and out, and I’m someone who actually enjoys baseball, not a casual fan.

Oh well, I’m sure nothing’s going to change, because they don’t care. Hopefully the Pirates get in next year so I can sell whatever tickets I get as part of my package and offset what I’m paying for the regular season that means nothing now.

Does it? Best I can tell the Rangers only spent big on 3 players, one of which went down early in the season. 3.5 if you count the part of Scherzer’s salary they’re paying and he barely contributed as well. The rest of their lineup makes $4 million or less.

Rangers showed that you need to build your team using all avenues to win. The draft, free agents, and trades. To make it work a GM has to weigh where he is drafting, and where you spend your money on free agents. The trades this team made at the deadline put them over the top like the Braves when they won being the wild card. Today teams with money restrictions have a hard time getting to the top like the D-Backs and Rays.

But I’m sorry, the dbacks (which thank you for your service in eliminating the Phillies) have no business being in the playoffs. They had a negative run differential and ultimate really weren’t that great of a team to be worthy of playing in the playoffs much less a World Series. This system completely takes away any relevance of the regular season and needs to be fixed.

When a team makes the playoffs, they deserve their shot. They’re not supposed to get there, roll over and lose just because another team has better statistics. Dbacks and Rangers were the last teams standing and deserved to be there. I’d like an official rule that teams can’t have a losing record and get into the playoffs, like they can now and in pro football. Game 5 was a 1-0 game going into the 9th. Highly competitive. Congratulations to both teams on their seasons and to the Rangers for earning their ring.

Stop hating on cruz. I am so tired of all you so called “fans”. I would have gladly had him back with open arms the seasons he left. Why does neftali not get any blame or wash for not subbing him out?

Dbacks fan here. After sleeping on it last night, I want to again congratulate the World Champion Texas Rangers.

And say how proud I am about the Dbacks’ surprisingly great season and deep post-season run. They exceeded all of my (lofty) expectations for the year, and I’m excited about the next several seasons of this talented, young ball club!

Tommy Lasorda once said of Bruce Bochy that he could win the world series with twenty five guys from Labor Ready.

So out of the five teams left not to win the WS…. The Mariners are the only team never to make it to the WS… doing this off of memory… think I am right but correct me if I am not.

I guess some of you people don’t like God. Remember what he did with those two City sodoman and Gomorrah because of what they were doing. Again God wins he always wins great job Texas. Rangers. Enjoy

    Good for Texas and Bochy.
    Money can bring a winner.
Only the two 1969 teams, the 1977 team, and the two 1993 teams left as bridesmaids.
And three teams in the last six years have escaped it-Astros,Nationals,and Rangers.
