Rangers Remove Adolis Garcia, Max Scherzer From World Series Roster

By Mark Polishuk | October 31, 2023 at 6:11pm CDT

6:11PM: The Rangers have officially replaced Garcia and Scherzer on the World Series roster with Duran and left-hander Brock Burke, the league announced.  Burke had a 4.37 ERA, 20.8% strikeout rate, and 3.8% walk rate over 59 2/3 innings for Texas this season, initially working as a multi-inning reliever before settling into a more standard one-inning bullpen role.  The southpaw has made only one appearance during the Rangers’ playoff run, tossing one-third of an inning in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Orioles.

5:12PM: Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer each left yesterday’s Game 3 with injuries, as Garcia was removed with an apparent side injury after a big swing in the eighth inning and Scherzer lasted only three innings on the mound due to back tightness.  Providing updates on both players today, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told media that the club had yet to make a formal decision about whether or not either Garcia or Scherzer would be replaced on the World Series roster, but that decision might come prior to the start of tonight’s Game 4.

“It’s not great news” about Garcia, as Bochy bluntly put it, as the outfielder has suffered “a moderate strain of the oblique.”  Garcia took some swings to test his readiness and is undergoing treatment from team trainers, but he has already been ruled out of the starting lineup, as Travis Jankowski will instead get the nod tonight in Garcia’s customary right field spot.  As for Scherzer, the veteran right-hander’s back is still “pretty locked up,” putting his readiness for another appearance later in the Series into serious doubt.

Since a player cannot return to action in the World Series once he is removed from the roster, it is understandable why Texas is being as cautious as possible before making a final call on Garcia and Scherzer.  That said, it is hard to imagine either getting healthy enough to play within the short window of time remaining in the postseason.  The Rangers simply can’t afford to play essentially two men down, and even though Scherzer probably wouldn’t have pitched again until a possible Game 7 if healthy, the Rangers would still be fielding a shorthanded roster in the event that Scherzer was given an extra day or two for more observation.  Getting a fresh arm in Scherzer’s place would also help the bullpen sooner rather than later.

Ezequiel Duran has already been tabbed as the replacement should Garcia indeed be removed from the roster, yet obviously there’s no way to truly replace his huge contributions to the Texas lineup.  Garcia has been perhaps the biggest star of the Rangers’ playoff run, as he has hit .323/.382/.726 with eight home runs over 68 plate appearances this postseason.  Garcia’s 15 RBI during the ALCS set a new record for most RBI in a postseason series, and Garcia was rightly named ALCS MVP for his heroics in the Rangers’ seven-game triumph over the Astros.

Sad, tragic news. My heart breaks after hearing these horifically regrettable and regretfully horrific events that have transpired right before our eyes. I want to ask that you, wherever you are and whenever you are reading this, to please take a moment to pause with me to remember these two fallen gentlemen, of this beautiful game that you and I both love, and never forget the moment that this tragic news of not knowing the staus of these two giants of our sport first broke. We don’t even know, they might be dead already! WHY WHY WHY!!!!

cencal – It’s the degree of the strain that matters. Them saying it’s a “moderate” strain indicates at least grade 2, so there is no possible way he’d be back.

Grade 1: This is a mild strain that affects only a small number of fibers in the muscle. It doesn’t cause any decrease in strength. You may feel pain and tenderness a day after sustaining the injury.

Grade 2: This is a moderate strain, often characterized by the tearing of nearly half of the muscle fibers. You will experience acute pain (pain that comes on quickly but doesn’t last long) that is accompanied by swelling and a decrease in muscle strength.

Grade 3: This is the same thing as a muscle tear, where your muscle is completely ruptured. The affected muscle may be torn in two or in such a way that it separates from the tendon. You will experience a lot of pain and won’t be able to use the muscle or affected joint.

Both Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer have been removed from the Texas Rangers’ roster due to injuries. They are out for the remainder of the World Series. Utilityman Ezequiel Duran and left-handed reliever Brock Burke will replace them.

I feel horrible for Garcia but Scherzer shouldn’t have been on the roster in the first place. You know he talked his way into it and the alcs. He’s hurt this team even with the win in game 3. He said he was fully healthy and what did he do when he pitched? 7 innings over 3 starts and he got bombed in 2 of those. If he wants to pitch in October he needs to get on fellow egomaniac Roger Clemens half season plan. He’s hurt Texas bad. Again really feel terrible about Garcia. He is a ballplayer.

When your an “ace” of a staff who wasn’t healthy enough to be out there in the first place I think that 3 scoreless innings doesn’t matter because now you are reconfiguring your rotation mid World Series. He had a lot of luck that Arizona didn’t score Walker ran thru the stop sign. It was an empty 3 scoreless. I hope the Rangers and Janikowski can keep it up. Thank God no more Scherzer this year. I hope he gets this ring and retires. He’s not gonna do that with 40 million on the table and I don’t blame him for that. But I’m just glad he’s done. Didn’t want him blowing Game 7.

Max himself said the comebacker had nothing to do with it. He’s 39 with a bad back. And without Garcia’s throw he’s down 1-0. Those are 3 empty innings. Even in a world series because as I said before you are back to square one with your rotation in the middle of the world series!! So you got 3 innings scoreless and a bullpen game 7. That’s really they way Bochy wanted this to line up I’m sure. I see you know as much about baseball as you do clever insults. Doofuss? Are you 6? Truth hurts. Scherzer sabotaged the staff. I get it. Blind loyalty is beautiful.

I think you simply can’t stand that Scherzer pitched better for the Rangers than he did for the Mets this year. Mets sucked, and Scherzer sucked while playing for them, then he goes to the Rangers and finds another gear because he’s playing for a team actually worth playing for instead of a cellar dweller. This drives you bonkers, and you will cry when he gets a ring. And yeah, you’re a doofus.

I think Scherzer is finished. He found another gear? Dude he got hurt at the most important time of the year and gave you nothing in the playoffs. The Rangers didn’t ride Scherzer into contention. The Mets are better off without that distraction. And The Mets can make mistakes like Scherzer and trade them away. If you think he deserves a ring for his performance. It is you sir that is the doofuss.

Next year your gonna have a lot of money sitting on the disabled list with deGrom first and now Max. Why don’t you write him a letter telling him how he’s the best pitcher in the whole wide world with those 3 whole innings that turned the tide!! He’s gonna drive you insane next year. Lmao, bringing up Game 6 like that has ANY power anymore. You’re acting like your team is the Yankees when you have 2 titles, and have been to the World Series twice since the start of the millennium, and got beat by a mediocre Yankees team (your big brother) and the Royals. The freaking Royals! That would have been like the Rangers losing to the Diamondbacks. I’d bet you weren’t even alive when they last won it all. By recent success, the Rangers blow your team out of the water. And I’m not complaining about payroll, I think it’s funny your team is spending half a billion per year to tank for draft picks. And Scherzer will be fine, not great but fine. Keep crying.

Not gonna happen next year Seager and Seimien will regress. You’ll get nothing out of deGrom or Scherzer. The Rangers might be a wild card next year. It’s not like you have a young nucleus. You have what the Mets have hired guns. You can tell winning is new to you. 2015 come on dude. We didn’t blow that series like you guys did in 2011. You’d have 2 like the Mets if he catches that ball. Enjoy your championship. They don’t come easy.

        Two ways to do it:

        1. Type out the full words “Runs Batted In”

        2. Use the acronym. If you don’t include the s it is fine. If you do include the s there is no apostrophe. Only acceptable use of an apostrophe is to indicate possession or to indicate a contraction of two words (like she is shortened to she’s)

Or to clarify what otherwise would otherwise be an ambiguous situation where adding the “s” to signify a plural noun appears to create a different word, as with the shortened versions of the Athletics’ and Orioles’ names.

Good point. Sorry, forgot to indicate the usage of an apostrophe to indicate omitted letters from a single word, which is a relatively rare usage outside of the shortening of the names of sports teams.

It still stands that adding an apostrophe and s to an acronym is only correct when indicating possession.

From the MLA Style Center “to make an acronym plural add an s without an apostrophe”

Correct, the noun is pluralized, better to have run complete the phrase, like batted in run(s) so pluralizing it would soubd more natural. But as were stuck with rbi as the expression of choice, using the plural “s” when referring to more than one run is best way to reference. Saying “he drove in 90 rbi this year” sounds strange to say the least.

Hopefully they’re okay for next year. Garcia is turning himself into a postseason legend. At this point I’d be surprised if the Rangers blew a 3-1 lead but crazier stuff has happened. Their fans really deserve it. Long time suffering and getting so close but no cigar. Either team winning is a heck of a story, but the Rangers just look unbeatable many nights. Could Seager get his 2nd WS MVP? One in both leagues too.
