Yankees To Acquire Two 40-Man Roster Players From Dodgers

By Nick Deeds | December 10, 2023 at 1:48pm CDT

The Yankees are poised to acquire two players on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster in exchange for a prospect not on the 40-man, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The names of the players in the deal are not yet known. Joel Sherman of the New York Post confirms Rosenthal’s report while adding that the deal, which is pending a medical review, would send one “end of roster” pitcher to the Yankees alongside a prospect on the 40-man roster. The deal would clear 40-man roster spots for LA’s reported deals with right-hander Joe Kelly and superstar Shohei Ohtani.

While it’s unclear which players are changing hands in the deal, it’s hardly a surprise that the sides would get together on such a trade. After all, the Dodgers’ 40-man roster is currently full, meaning they already needed to clear space on the 40-man to formally add Kelly and Ohtani. On the other hand, the Yankees just cleared two spots from their own 40-man roster in a seven-player trade with the Padres that brought back star slugger Juan Soto. While the additions of both Soto and center fielder Trent Grisham take up 40-man roster spots, that’s more than made up for by the departures of right-handers Jhony Brito, Michael King, and Randy Vasquez as well as catcher Kyle Higashioka. A deal between the sides allows the Dodgers to recoup some value for players they likely would have had to part with anyway, while the Yankees figure to take advantage of LA’s roster crunch to begin rebuilding its pitching depth in the aftermath of the Soto deal.

Depending upon what NYY sends back, Dodgers may send any two of:
B Hudson, Frasso, Hurt, Vanasco, or Varland, Feyereisen, Vivas or Feduccia.

Yarborough and Vargas. Maybe during discussions, the Dodgers and Yankees also swap Muncy for a prospect

That would be giving away an extremely valuable prospect for virtually nothing. Vargas has way more value than that.

And Muncy isn’t going anywhere. He just signed a under market extension to stay a dodger. Dude put up a 2.6 WAR and makes $5 million next season.

The Red Sox will acquire a starting pitcher!!!

        I don’t know who.
I don’t know how old he is.
I don’t know where he is from.
I don’t know how much he will get.
I don’t know how many years he will get.
I don’t know if it will be a trade or a free agent signing.
I don’t know if there will be a no-trade clause.
I don’t know if there will be any team options.
I don’t know if there will be any money deferred.
I don’t know if there will be an opt-out clause.

@Fever- I’m hearing the Red Sox have more interest in Jordan Montgomery then Blake Snell, it’s probably a good idea because Monty would be cheaper, and probably be more effective at Fenway then Snell.

Yeah I know the Sox prefer free agents with no QO attached, but they really need a #1 and I just don’t think Monty is that guy. As a #2 he’d be great, but you can’t compare a guy who has never received Cy votes against a 2-time Cy winner.

I try not to be elitist when it comes to which final fantasy is better, but we all know VII and X are the best. The others have their moments, especially when it comes to baseball news. As to the accuracy of their baseball reporting, I’m suspicious.

Although, final fantasy is more of my go to for blitzball updates. Blappa is a free agent soon.

Whole thread people have talked about final fantasy video games.

Maybe you don’t know Roman numerals

          VII means 7
          X means 10
          VI means 6

Not a single person has talked about old musicians in this thread. Until you did.

It likely doesn’t matter. They’re two players on the fringes of the Dodgers 40-man roster who are out of options. If they didn’t make this trade, they’d be DFA’d. Whoever the are! The Yankees generally make trades like this every year, but it usually goes in the other direction, meaning they’re moving players out of options, but the Soto trade opened up a couple additional 40-man roster spots. I doubt this will be of great consequence to either club.

Can’t imagine Yankees trade a non-40 player (who typically has options) for two guys with no options left. They’d have to carry those guys on the 26 man roster.

Yes. I mixed 40-man players and players without options, which are not always the same. The Dodgers need to open up a 40-man roster spot, while the Yankees have (I believe) five open 40-man roster spots, and likely one more once they jettison Florial who has no purpose with Grisham on the club.

Yankees should have moved Florial. He had a good season in AAA and never was used much.

        • RobM

@Fernando, my answer will be unsatisfying, but Florial’s trade value was pretty much non-existent. He has the most fatal of fatal flaws as a hitter. Fans scout the stat line; MLB teams scout the player. The Yankees used him in the exact role they wanted to. The “break glass in case of emergency” CFer. Hold him for the season with no intention of calling him up unless things really go sideways. They finally did in September after they let Bader go and then Dominguez got injured. Could they have gotten maybe an A-ball-level lottery ticket for Florial? Likely, but the value of holding him in case of an emergency outweighed the lottery ticket. Florial is now going to enter the Greg Allen phase of his career. Teams will pick him up and cut him at will when they need a quick fix in CF, a defensive specialist, but someone they won’t keep. Forial will be–have glove, will travel.

@ RobM – Don’t disagree with what you said, but they ran out some awful players in OF/DH last year (McKinney, Cordero, Calhoun, IKF, Allen). These guys had a lot less success in AAA and plenty of previous chances.

Florial strikes out a lot but he had speed, plays solid D. Run him out there to see if anything changed, as opposed to using all those retreads.

Rob – if the reports are accurate, Dosgers are still going after SP. isn’t this a move that will have to be repeated if they sign more FA’s? Maybe a trade for Cease so they dump 3 or 4 guys in one move?

        • RobM

@Longtimecoming, Sure. The most immediate need is to open a spot for Ohtani, but thinking ahead, they know they’ll need to open more spots, be they 40-man and/or 26-man, hence maybe that’s why we’re seeing the reports that two players are being traded by the Dodgers. A Cease trade, if it happened, will likely include active and 40-man roster players you’d think, although if they sign Yamamoto (although I believe he will go to one of the two NY teams, but maybe not), then they’ll need a direct spot for him too. Either way, the Dodgers current 40- and 26-man rosters are not their final ones.

I’m not a Dodgers fan, which is why I’m curious who Dodgers fans think they’ll likely move.

They need a spot right now for Joe Kelly too, so that is why they are trading 2 guys off of their 40 man roster, and will need to move more off their 40 man roster if they sign another free agent like Yamamoto.

A deal for Cease definitely makes sense now. They’ll probably have to trade 2-3 guys on their 40-man roster to acquire Cease, so that will open enough spots for Cease and another free agent acquisition or two.

Not sure what the serious question is? Are you looking for a list of names? In every MLB system are developing players at different levels and stages in development that have tools that MLB scouts and teams are interested in. Most of them will be good minor league players, some will make the big leagues, and every once in a while you can pull a winning lottery ticket out of another team’s farm system.

Yes, Spencer Jones is a great example. Basically anyone good who the Yankees have drafted over the last 2-3 draft classes could be of interest for LA. It’s not uncommon for most teams to have one or two of their top 10 prospects not on their 40-man roster because of service time.

Good example: the Red Sox #1 prospect now, Roman Anthony, is not on Boston’s 40 man roster because of his limited service time. He was recently drafted and does not require a 40-man roster spot yet.

The Yankees would want a pretty good player in exchange for a high recent draft pick. They’re not giving up a top prospect for the 39th and 40th guys on the roster. They might give a better prospect in exchange for a #3 reliever or a 3rd baseman who’s better than their current alternatives.

Bad trade. But that’s what happens when a team can’t sign players because they don’t want to play for the Yankees. Players don’t want to be in a line up that changes every day. Also, they don’t want to be told when to shave. They can only trade for players and trust that Soto will be fine next year. Dodgers will likely sign him as well. Or the Mets. Perhaps AZ…

I’m giving this blockbuster trade a B-. It’s not what I would like but necessary for both teams involved.

Your guess is as good as mine. The Yankees must have an unannounced MiLB contract with Clint Frazier.

The current wearer of #17 is Joe Kelly, which he promises to give up if Ohtani buys him two Maseratis.

Victor Gonzalez and Bryan Hudson are the most likely candidates here. Austin Barnes is a possibility, as is Gus Varland. Ryan Yarbrough or Jorbit Vivas seem less likely, but would not shock me.

Is Vivas on the 40 man? It wouldn’t surprise me if this becomes an Andrew Friedman special where he gets a prospect or two from NY then spins them with a couple more for a pitcher or more from another team.

Vivas has been on the 40-man for two years now! They protected him from the Rule 5 in 2021 — along with James Outman, Michael Grove, Jacob Amaya (since traded to the Marlins for Miguel Rojas), Eddys Leonard (since traded to the Tigers for cash).

This trade will be completed after Ohtani’s next free agency period, or when Dave Roberts gives us the players names at a press conference! Does J P Morosi have the exclusive on this trade? All players are on separate jets!
