5:19pm: The Rangers made it official, announced they have signed Garcia to a two-year deal. Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Garcia will make $4.75MM this year and a base of $9.25MM next year.
11:33am: Garcia is guaranteed $14MM over the two-year term, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The contract contains a series of escalators based on MVP voting that could further increase his salary in year two of the deal. The contract can max out at $20.25MM total over two years, Heyman adds.
10:58am: The Rangers have agreed to a two-year contract with star outfielder Adolis Garcia, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. The deal is still pending completion of a physical, and there are still some details to be finalized, but the general framework is in place. Garcia is represented by Octagon.
The agreement comes on the same day that Garcia and the team were slated to head to an arbitration hearing. Garcia’s camp had filed for a $6.9MM salary for the upcoming season, while the team had countered at $5MM. That hearing will now no longer be necessary, and the two-year term on the deal eliminates the chance of a hearing next offseason as well. Garcia will still be under club control for one final year after this two-year pact draws to a close, so the two sides will again have to deal with a potential arb hearing in the 2025-26 offseason.
Garcia, 31 next month, has emerged as a late-blooming star and one of the driving factors behind the Rangers’ 2023 World Series title. He’s been a key presence in the lineup and in the outfield for Texas in each of the past three seasons, hitting .246/.305/.472 (110 wRC+) with plus defense and baserunning.
Garcia’s 2023 campaign, however, was far and away his best overall season to date. Garcia posted a career-best 10.3% walk rate and career-low 27.7% strikeout rate while hitting .245/.328/.508 with 39 home runs — second-most in the American League and tied for seventh-most in all of MLB. That performance earned Garcia an All-Star nod, and his premium defense resulted in his first career Gold Glove Award. His heroics continued into the postseason, where he hit .323/.382/.726 with a staggering eight home runs in just 15 games and 68 plate appearances. Garcia was on another level during the ALCS, when he clocked five home runs and slugged just shy of .900 en route to ALCS MVP honors.
An ill-timed oblique strain suffered on a swing during Game 3 of the World Series prompted the Rangers to remove Garcia from their World Series roster, but Texas soldiered on without their star right fielder and toppled the upstart Diamondbacks in a 4-1 series victory. By all accounts, Garcia has long since healed up from that injury and is a full-go for spring training.
Heading into 2024, Garcia will again reprise his role as the team’s primary right fielder. He’ll likely be joined by center fielder Leody Taveras, but the complexion of the Texas outfield is beginning to change in dramatic fashion. Top prospect Evan Carter made his big league debut late in the 2023 season and took the playoffs by storm. He’s just 21 years old, but after hitting .306/.413/.635 in 75 plate appearances down the stretch and .300/.417/.500 in another 72 postseason trips to the plate, he’s the heavy favorite to play left field regularly.
Meanwhile, 2023 No. 4 overall pick Wyatt Langford breezed through minor league pitching in 2023, batting .360/.480/.677 in 200 plate appearances across four levels. Langford reached Triple-A for the final five games of his season and is in the mix to break camp with the Rangers. He could join Carter and Garcia in a carousel of sorts between the outfield corners and the DH spot in manager Bruce Bochy’s lineup.

Why do we never hear about arbitration agreement pending physical??
But when a team and player agree to a 2 year deal covering his arbitration years, pending physical.
Canuckleball
The arbitration years of a player are basically one long contract where each year has a differently negotiated rate of pay, but it’s all one ‘contract’.
Players generally don’t have to undergo physicals in the middle of a contract.
Adolis and the team have signed a new contract, hence a physical
CardsFan57
A contract where the team can walk away at the end of any year.
mlb fan
“Why do we never hear”…Arbitration “contracts” are not fully guaranteed and an agreement negotiated outside of arbitration IS fully guaranteed. I imagine that would be why the team protects itself with a physical for a longer, fully guaranteed contact. An arbritration awarded contract can be unilaterally terminated(by team) during spring training(by a certain date) with only 45 days severance pay owed to the player.

Maybe 2years and 16MM?

More like 2/ 20

Physical= PED test
kscheer
Yeah okay bud.
bart i.
Just joking, don’t get me wrong. I watch that kid play since he was 19 and he has the same body then.
Paleobros
Bart,
You weren’t apparently joking then someone questioned what you said and now you’re joking and then say that you’ve seen him play for a while and it’s the same body, but still you chose to go and mention PEDs? You say don’t get you wrong based on what you choose to go ahead and say. Happens often when people get called out on things.
Very cool and normal way to be.
Clofreesz
People still salty? Okay.
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
Very classy, accusing someone of steroids with zero proof or evidence. I’m not a rangers fan but this is pretty pathetic lol. I hope you realize how much of a sore loser and salty crybaby this whole thing makes you look like. The whole thing screams “wahhhh I can’t accept defeat so I’m going to accuse a good player of cheating.” You’re pathetic.
bart i.
Wow!! You read my own reply?
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
@bart
I posted it before I saw you had replied. That’s my bad. I’m just really sick of the banter that “Adolis Garcia is on steroids.” If you remember, During the world series there were tons of people (mostly Diamondbacks and Astros fans) who were accusing him of cheating just because he was doing good. Those people truly were pathetic. I wrongly assumed you were one of those guys. I guess you posted your reply why I was typing? Sorry, Bart, I owe you an apology.
bart i.
No harm, no fault. That was a dumb comment by my part, I realize now. I never intended to create an argument.
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
Even dumber comment on my part, Bart, I shouldn’t have judged.
mlb fan
“Very classy accusing”…Saying someone “took a PED test” is not accusing them of anything actually. Players take PED tests all the time as part of their standard players contract. Teams protect their interests by giving a health physical before contracts are finalized and physicals often include PED tests. It’s business(part of CBA) not personal.
Go Go Power Rangers
It was implied he does PEDs (somewhat lightheartedly). This has been a common jab to Adolis since the ALCS. Otherwise why would he specifically bring up a PED test?
bart i.
Thank you
mlb fan
“Since the ALCS”…You mean a few months is the same as a player having a longtime PED reputation?..
I’ve watched MLB all my life and this is the first I’m hearing about Adolis having a PED “reputation”. Maybe TX is your local team and you watch them 7 days a week, whereas I catch them 2-3 times per week during the season. It’s entirely possible you know something I don’t know.
Jesse Chavez enthusiast
@mlb fan
It is a way to common jab towards Adolis Garcia, during the world series there were tons of people saying he was cheating. I’m guessing you don’t remember that? Also, I hadn’t seen that Bart had replied while I was typing. That is my bad, I couldn’t tell the difference between his “joke” and the real thousands of people who truly think that way.
fivepoundbass
There are probably a lot of fans that didn’t even know what Garcia looks like until this year’s playoffs. His physique plus his performance in the ALCS make him a stereotypical target, no matter how unfounded this accusations would be.
James Midway
Glad for him, he certainly deserves a raise.
JazzJazz
He deserved at least double, if not triple, this deal.
Incompetent agent!
Greenwell
Agreed 100%. Maybe I’m slow, but he’s getting less this year than what the rangers offered and if he puts up similar numbers this year his salary next year seems to be less than what he’d receive with the bump through arbitration
JazzJazz
The dude played a massive role in the Rangers bringing in hundreds of millions in Championship revenue. He should have been rewarded for his heroics. Even if he totally sucked from here on out, he’s already been worth tens of millions.
178iq
Great clutch hitter for any team. He’s cheap for now…
cwsOverhaul
Nice balance for team given they are paying big $ to deGrom/Seager/Semien long-term. Garcia’s agent should kick the tires on extension since he won’t reach FA until 34yo.
mlb fan
“Won’t reach FA until 34yo”…That’s brutal. Players in his situation need to get all they can, while they can, since they’ll likely never see a big money long term deal.
Nuggethoarder
It’s really not brutal. He is making 14 million dollars over two years. That is amazing money.
Yes, if he had been a standout star at a younger age he could make more, but he wasn’t. He was released and passed over by the entire league. So – I’m sure he is incredibly happy to have gotten an additional chance to make life-altering money over a few years of his life. I would be!
In practical terms, the difference between 14 million and 140 million is really just more stuff that no one needs. Even at 14 million you can set your family up pretty well for a long time, if you invest it well and don’t buy Lamborghinis.
Clofreesz
He deserves the money. He’s so electric and likable.
mlb fan
He’s a better all around player than Juan Soto but Soto gets more hype.
Clofreesz
Adolis has the better arm, fielding, and power. Soto and Adolis are equal in speed. Adolis is nowhere near as close to hitting. Soto walks way more and can hit for average.
Rick Wilkins
Totally agree. One of my favorites in the league.
dankyank
Great deal for both sides and a relative steal for the Rangers. $6.9 million in arbitration this year would have escalated to $15 million in 2025.
CaseyAbell
No surprise. Even I predicted they would settle without a hearing, and I’m the world’s worst predictor. The Rangers just don’t do arb hearings, haven’t done one since 2000. I thought they might make a three-year deal, but the Rangers were probably a little worried about Garcia’s production declining rapidly in his 30s.
The guy does strike out a lot and depends on power for most of his offensive value. That’s held his career OPS down to .770, and the team might figure that he could fall below that level as he ages. Oh well, there’s no such thing as a bad one-year deal, and even two years is not a huge commitment. Glad they got it done without a hearing, because Garcia is an emotional type who might take any bad comments about his performance to heart.
dankyank
Given that he would have received the $6.9 million this year, the deal basically eliminates any arbitration raise in 2025. There’s no way the Rangers lose on this deal
CaseyAbell
Yeah, it’s a smart deal for the club. Even if Garcia starts to decline – and frankly I think he will, because he’s turning 31 and there’s just too much whale and flail in his at-bats – they’re not on the hook for big long-term money. Also, the Rangers already have his replacement coming along in Langford, who looks to be a much better all-round hitter.
filihok
RE dy
Hard to lose on a deal when everything is tilted in your favor.
Old York
Seems like the Rangers are looking long-term and think this guy will fall back to his career of 0.244 BA & 0.328 wOBA and trying to get the max of his peak before he declines. Good team deal.
Rsox
Garcia has been fun watch the last few seasons. Good for him.
filihok
I would not be at all surprised if 2023 were Garcia’s career year.
Still, imagine what he’d get as a free agent this year
MLB salary structure is a rip off.
straightuphonestguy
I’ll have to wait for the escalators (or maybe the signing bonus), but the guaranteed 2/$14M baffles me. Even if he were to lose his arbitration case, he’s guaranteed at least $5M next year unless he suffers a catastrophic injury. And while I’m not the biggest fan of the low-OBP slugger types, he’s a plus defender and runner, so I don’t think he’s in danger of collapsing into non-tender territory, especially at his age.
CaseyAbell
I had some of the same misgivings in my previous posts. But to give Garcia credit, he did draw a career-high 65 walks in 2023 and got his OBP up to .328. That’s not great but it’s acceptable for a guy with his power. We’ll see if he can keep making improvements in his plate discipline, which used to be almost nonexistent.
Now Yu Know
Good move by the Rangers to hang on to him.
filihok
ndf6
“Good move by the Rangers to hang on to him.”
I mean, there was not any reasonable reason to not hold on to him (other than a trade).
They get him at a fraction of his value with no real risk.
fivepoundbass
Maybe he thinks that he looks like Adonis
Clofreesz
“El Bombi” was nicknamed that way because one of his teammates in Cuba thought his head was so big it was like a lightbulb. (This was when he was in his 20s I think or teen years)
GoGreen
First 5 tool Ranger outfielder since J-ham, Bombi deserves this. Can’t wait to see the Silver Boot rivalry and Hader in 2024. Can’t wait to see Ron Wash back at the helm in the AL West.
GoGreen
They didn’t have the hose.
Beff Jagwell
AL west should more fun with Seattle hopefully not sucking. A’s and Angels will be crap, but hopefully it’s not just Astros and Rangers again in 2024.

Rumor is the Tigers didn’t need somebody to hit a bunch of home runs and doubles this year, the money has been allocated elsewhere.
Still no partnership with the Detroit Zoo-where it all happens. How sad.
WWF, not happy campers, dude.
It is very important in business to hire the right guys and gals, and that’s actually not a rumor, just a fact.
sfa_shag
Astros Fan here…..good for Adolis getting his deal and the pay raise. His story is such an interesting one to his DFA (twice I believe), to the work he put in to continue to drive and be successful at the sport he loves. While sometimes his antics are a little too much for me (as I said I am an Astros fan), you can tell he is having fun playing the GAME he loves. I know he will continue to be a thorn in our side for years to come but that is what makes watching sports fun. Good luck this year Rangers fans, it should be another battle.
Silver Boot Series Enjoyer
Good luck! Happy y’all got Altuve locked up and added Hader.
Beff Jagwell
It’s nice when fans can banter without being crap humans.
Beff Jagwell
I don’t mind it, baseball is too stale. He just can’t get his panties in a twist when it’s done to him.
sippycups
mattress mack had to hold and carry that L that Bombi gave him this year.
Beff Jagwell
Mattress Mack has never lost one of those bets. He hedges every single one.
BaseballGuy1
Talent, inconsistent. Can see why they took him to arbitration. Agreement is reasonable, consider it victory for Garcia.

Langford….50 doubles in 2024?
Murphy NFLD
My first thought is it seems a little light considering his deal this year thru arb would have been more no matter what, then he hit bomb so his following arb case would have been good to so he may have left a little on the table. Then i thought that he is in a no state tax state. So in Canada and California, the 2 worst, the players take home about 50% and are taxed 50%. Canada has a tax free account that sports players use and based on your income you are allowed to pit so much in and that evens it out for them. Florida, Texas, Tennessee and some other have no state taxe. So in texas he takes home 63% and it taxed about 37%
Murphy NFLD
So vlad taxes home just under 10M on his 1yr 19.9M arb salary. Adolis takes home 8.82 of his 14M and 2 years. So quick math would be a 20M deal in canada or California is equal to about 16M in Florida, texas and the no state tax states. Players should take less overall but make the same or a little more and have more money to bring in players
Murphy NFLD
As a jays fan im jealous of you guys having Langford, Carter and Adolis. Langford is going to be the next big Papi, Miggy, Arod or Albert Pulos, i truly believe he will be that bad mana jamma with the stick. Ed Julien from the twins is gonna be another bad bad man. I wish the jays could have worked out a deal for him. Like Ed Julien and an expiring start for Manoah and Espinal and a prospect but Manoah had a bad year. I believe he rebounds word was he was in bad shape when he showed up. There is some bad blood tho as because he was sent down he lost super 2 and will be a FA 1 year later
Beff Jagwell
Hopefully he plays more than 40% of his teams games though.
bravesfan
Glad they paid him and didn’t go to arb, but lord the guy is 30 and a legit star. Poor guy should be getting paid a lot more. The arb process is a joke and stinks for late bloomers like him
