White Sox Acquire Dominic Fletcher

By Nick Deeds | February 3, 2024 at 5:14pm CDT

The White Sox have a deal in place with the Arizona Diamondbacks to acquire outfielder Dominic Fletcher, according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. Right-hander Cristian Mena is headed to Arizona in exchange for Fletcher’s services. Both teams have since announced the deal.

The younger brother of Braves utility player David Fletcher, the 26-year-old was Arizona’s second-round selection in the 2019 draft. He made a 28-game cameo in the big leagues last year and impressed in his first taste of big league action with a .301/.350/.441 slash line in 102 trips to the plate. Fletcher combined that solid first impression in the majors with strong numbers at the Triple-A level last year, where he slashed .291/.399/.500, good for a wRC+ of 120 even in the inflated offensive environment of the PCL, where the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate plays its games. Strong as Fletcher’s offensive numbers have been to this point in his career, defense is the outfielder’s true calling card. In ranking Fletcher as Arizona’s #11 prospect last season, MLB.com described him as a center fielder with strong reads off the bat and solid routes in the outfield that he pairs with an arm strong enough to handle right field.

As promising as the start to Fletcher’s big league career was last season, it’s understandable that the Diamondbacks would look to part ways with the 26-year-old. After all, the club currently boasts a crowded outfield mix headlined by young star Corbin Carroll that also features veteran free agent additions Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Joc Pederson in addition to former top prospect Alek Thomas. With Jake McCarthy penciled into a bench role and the likes of Pavin Smith and Jorge Barrosa already on the 40-man roster as depth options, Fletcher was left as a superfluous asset in Arizona.

By contrast, Fletcher fills a notable need for the White Sox headed into the season. While Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr. figure to man left and center field for the club on a daily basis, the club appeared likely to rely on the likes of Oscar Colas and Brett Phillips in right field headed into Spring Training later this month. Colas struggled to a .216/.257/.314 slash line in 75 games with Chicago last year while Phillips has slashed an anemic .152/.230/.269 in 296 trips to the plate across the past two seasons. The addition of Fletcher should provide the White Sox with another viable option headed into camp who can battle for a spot on the big league roster alongside Colas, Phillips, Zach DeLoach (who the club acquired from the Mariners earlier today), and Kevin Pillar (who the club signed to a minor league deal yesterday).

In exchange for parting ways with Fletcher, the Diamondbacks acquire a 21-year-old hurler in Mena. After signing for $250K out of the Dominican Republic during the 2019 international signing period, Mena has climbed through the White Sox system to become the club’s #10 prospect last year per MLB.com, which notes Mena’s impressive repertoire includes a fastball that touches 96, a low-80s curveball, as well as a slider and a mid-80s changeup that are still developing.

That pitch mix gives Mena the potential to be a mid-rotation starter at some point, though to reach that potential he’ll need to iron out control issues that cropped up in 2023, when he walked 11% of batters faced in 27 starts split between the Double- and Triple-A levels. Despite those concerns with Mena’s strike-throwing, the righty managed to punch out 26.9% of batters faced last year between the two levels. It’s a feat made all the more impressive when you consider that 2023 was Mena’s age-20 campaign, making him far younger than the average pitcher at even the Double-A level, to say nothing of Triple-A. Even after parting ways with Mena, the White Sox still have a pair of upper-level pitching prospects knocking on the door of the majors in Jake Eder and Nick Nastrini, with the likes of Ky Bush and Noah Schultz further down on the organizational depth chart.

He had more WAR in 93 at bats last year for the Dbacks than the White Sox have gotten out of their right fielders the past 3 seasons. Hopefully, Getz gets more suggestions from other teams.

This was another superb move by Chris Getz. Defense has improved 10x over last year, not to mention the clubhouse. Likely added Dylan Cease back to the rotation. This is your A.L. Central champion folks. Luis Robert is the best player in the American League with Ohtani going to the Dodgers.

FYI ….. I am still absolutely seething over the proposed stadium deal for the White Sox …. If the city is intent on building the Bears a new lakefront stadium, then make it convertible to baseball for the White Sox as well. Casino is going in downtown anyway. Maybe fans will come if it is the same home as the Bears. Don’t believe any of the projected numbers. Remember All-State Arena?? For DePaul??? They had projections of DePaul drawing 10,000 fans per night. They draw fewer than 1,000 a night in their new shiny arena. Fired the coach …. Again!! 3-15 start to the season. I thought this arena was gonna draw in good players???? Who is making up for that lost projected revenue??? Could it be the taxpayers????

Luis Robert who ws 12th in AL MVP voting is suddenly best player in AL?? That’s amusing…

Your not wrong. White Sox improved defensively, so I won’t be surprised if they manage above average defense. They finally got some offense with Dom Fletcher. Also a solid defender. They finally gets a decent RF at best.

Luis Robert’s age and success last season was definitely impressive, especially he played on the White Sox. He really couldn’t be stopped when he was streaking last year. I wouldn’t say he’s the best AL outfielder, but his name should come up in the debate. The Yankees have 2 Outfielders I would pick before Luis.

David Fletcher has sucked the big one the past three seasons, his OPS+ has been 70 (2021), 76 (2022) and 72 (2023). Rare that I question an AA move, but David is that exception. David had one stolen base in 2022 and 2023 combined.

While David is the lesser Fletcher, Dominic had an OPS+ of 115 in 2023 over a small sample of 93 at-bats. It justifies giving him a chance to play and run with it, at least against RHP as part of a platoon. Dominic has a career OPS of 0.840 in the minors.

I don’t think calling Alek Thomas a budding star after putting up 75 OPS+ seasons each of the past two years as a 22 and 23 year old is accurate.

That said he’d be the Padres 2nd best outfielder right now so maybe that’s the ole annoying jealousy rearing its ugly head again.

Could be good in 2-3 years though when they roll out a competitive team again. If they can make nice complimentary deals like this to add to what they get for Cease, their current stable of mi or leaguers and the players they are keeping on hand (Robert) then you guys will have a nice young group.

Chris Getz is having a solid offseason. He seems to have a much better handle on the concept of team building than his predecessors. I don’t expect the Sox to be good in ’24 but they will be competitive. There was no path to immediate contention this season. The moves Getz has made will bring about a better style of play and hopefully a better culture.

There’s no trading Moncada. That’s ridiculous. No one is taking his $30 mil salary and Reinsdorf isn’t paying it down to get rid of him. Kopech is selling really low now so that isn’t happening.

Jimenez is owed so much money that it’s questionable whether they could anything valuable back for him.

They do need to trade Cease before the season starts and his value drops.

Why wouldn’t the White Sox pay some of that salary to trade him?

Same with Jiminez. If paying salary leads to more prospects that’s exactly what they should do.

All the value Jiminez and Moncada will provide in 2024 is completely wasted on a clearly rebuilding White Sox team.

When you say all the value, are you referring to the combined 1.0 WAR they accounted for last season??

Moncada’s career year was in 2019. Pretty clear what he is without a juiced ball. Jimenez is a DH with a decent bat, if he can stay healthy. They don’t provide the value it once seemed they would.

Jimenez should be the next to go. He is a good hitter – just unreliable due to constant dumb injuries.
IF the Sox could get a solid prospect (or young player MLB ready), in return for Eloy – they should jump at the chance to unload him. Even if it means paying 50% of his salary – as long as the return is appropriate. I really believe the Cubs traded him was for 2 reasons: 1) his poor defense and injury history and 2) his concentration seems to easily wander – and that’s something that can transfer from one player to the next.

Wish they’d trade the overly intense Vaughn and install Gavin there. Isn’t there some west coast fan boy crush at play here? Send him to the Giants or the traveling medicine show As and see him thrive. Gavin on the other hand is a valued lefty bat who in his young career has already come up big in pressure moments like the playoffs. Function of being a clubhouse kid in Baltimore with his pops and Cal, which in the case of baseball (unlike entertainment industry nepo babies) can be a good thing.

Chris Getz is actually doing an excellent job so far this offseason. His asking price needs to come down on Cease, but he has made a lot of good moves. Hasn’t given up much, has acquired a lot of moderately high reward type players (Fletcher, DeLoach, Berroa, Soroka, Shuster, etc) and has signed a couple solid players for low amounts, such as Brebbia, who can be flipped at the deadline.

Agree with the Cease price needing to go down, but he upgraded the defense. He does turn a bottom 5 defense into an above average. Improving the defense gives you a few extra wins. I’m was a bit skeptical of his plan to retool the roster but as of now its somewhat reasonable.

Two OF added in one day . When does Robert get traded?

Trading Robert would completely contradict Getz’s priority on defense. Getting two RF and adding depth is a gigantic improvement for the White Sox.

We’re u drinking heavily when u pressed “Post Comment” You appear to be wanting a complete teardown so yall can have more to cry about. Trading Robert guarantees a 40ish win season, but that’s the fuel yall wanting to cry more

You only have two players on the entire team that anyone would want. You might as well trade Robert at his peak value. Especially if you trade Cease. No one will remember the difference between 60 wins or 55 wins.

He’s a lot harder to trade bc he’s under contract til 2025 with two club options(which will probably get picked up).

Im not familiar with Mena, but after last years Varsho for Moreno and Gurriel trade, I’m hopeful Mena will be a contributor for the Dbacks in ’25 and beyond. Hazen has been pushing all the right buttons the last couple of years including keeping Torey after the 100+ loss season.

For one, Hack Wilson, owner of one of the records that will never be exceeded: 191 RBI in one season.

RF platoon of Fletcher and Pillar is sound both offensively and defensively.

The Sox will be the most improved defensive team in MLB this year.

I agree. Not saying the Sox will be good in 2024. But it sounds like the Sox want to compete in 2025/2026.

I am still pissed at Ken Williams for trading Jake Burger to the Marlins instead of Jimenez(whom they wanted)
Glad Williams is gone, and Getz is getting a chance

Absolutely. Jake Burger was worse than Eloy before he got traded.
