Mariners Sign Ryne Stanek

By Darragh McDonald | March 10, 2024 at 11:17am CDT

TODAY: The Mariners officially announced the signing after Stanek passed his physical.

MARCH 8: The Mariners and right-hander Ryne Stanek have agreed to deal, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. It will be a $4MM guarantee for Stanek, per Feinsand, with $2MM in bonuses also available. Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports that the MVP Sports Group client will report to Peoria tomorrow to take his physical and sign the contract. Divish also relays that it will be a one-year deal. The Mariners will need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move whenever the Stanek deal becomes official.

Stanek, 32, will jump across the American League West after spending the past three years with the Astros. He had solid results in that time, serving as a setup man for closer Ryan Pressly. Stanek made 186 appearances for Houston in that three-year span, racking up 41 holds and three saves. He allowed 2.90 earned runs per nine innings and struck out 27% of batters faced. The 12.2% walk rate in that time was certainly high but he was effective in spite of it.

Last year, he got that walk rate down to 9.9%, a personal best for his career. But his strikeout rate also dipped to 23.9%, barely above the 23.6% league average for relievers in 2023. His 4.09 ERA was more solid than great but the overall track record of his time in Houston is nonetheless strong. He also tossed 18 postseason innings for the club over those past three years with an ERA of 3.00.

Beyond the results, Stanek is also appealing for his stuff. His fastball averaged 98.2 miles per hour last year and he also has a splitter and a slider, throwing each of the latter two pitches around 18% of the time last year. Stanek received plenty of attention this offseason, as the Astros reportedly had some interest in a reunion while clubs like the Mets, Cubs and Red Sox were connected to him at various points.

Ultimately, he will land with the Mariners, which is a logical spot. Seattle is set to go into the season with Andrés Muñoz as their closer but the setup group has been dealing with a batch of injury concerns here in Spring Training.

Matt Brash was shut down a couple of weeks ago with an elbow issue and once seemed like he was facing a season-long absence, though he was cleared to resume throwing last week. Similarly, Gregory Santos was shut down due to some discomfort near his teres major muscle but has since started ramping things back up. Just yesterday, it was reported that Jackson Kowar will be meeting with a doctor to have his arm evaluated. None of those three situations seem disastrous in a vacuum but it appears there’s enough general uncertainty that the Mariners decided to reach out and add another arm into the mix and Stanek was the best one still out there.

RosterResource estimates the Seattle payroll is currently $136MM. That’s just barely under last year’s Opening Day figure of $137MM, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts. Previous reporting has suggested that uncertainty around the club’s TV revenue situation would limit them to a modest bump over last year’s spending. Adding Stanek’s salary bumps their payroll to $140MM, slightly beyond where they were a year ago.

The club’s Opening Day bullpen mix will largely depend on health at this point. Muñoz will certainly be in one spot and Stanek in another, while Brash and Santos will take two more if they are healthy. Kowar seemed to be trending to taking a spot before his health issues cropped up. Options for filling out the rest of the group include Gabe Speier, Trent Thornton, Tayler Saucedo, Austin Voth, Carlos Vargas, Mauricio Llovera and others.

For clubs still looking for bullpen upgrades at this late stage of the offseason, Stanek coming off the board leaves Brad Hand, Aaron Loup, Brad Boxberger and Mark Melancon as some of the most accomplished hurlers that remain unsigned.

Depending on the length and AAV, this is a good move. Mariners needed help in the bullpen with the depth being tested now.

What do you mean depending on the length, the title is literally “one year deal”

You can get a hold in non high leverage situations lol. Pitch the 6th inning vs 7,8,9 hitters in a 3 run game? That’s a hold. Meaningless stat. They trusted 5-6 relievers more than Stanek…

Who cares if they trusted Stanek in high leverage situations… that’s a moot point. If he had 41 holds, then they trusted him enough in almost 1/4 of the games this year that they needed to hold onto a win. That still makes him an incredibly valuable member of the bullpen. You either have some weird personal vendetta against Stanek… or your sole goal is to come on here and be negative for attention. Either way it’s kind of sad…

I said he was mediocre. What’s wrong with that and how is that negative? Because I’m not falling head over heels for Ryne Stanek it means I’m negative? Ummm ok? Or maybe I’ve just realized he was like the 7th most trusted reliever in Houston last year and his near 4 FIP is a better indicator of his talent than his ERA?

Well those last 3 years stats are propped up by one really good season which seems to be an outlier potentially because he usually gives up a lot more homers than he did that year. He’s decent. He struck out less guys which I’m fine with if he pitched well but he really didn’t seem to.

I think Stanek handles the middle innings once Brash/Santos come back, but will probably handle higher leverage spots for now. His track record, though a bit inconsistent, is decent enough to keep him around. The Mariners pitching coaches are also good at helping guys find another gear. They did it with Sewald, Graveman, Topa, Swanson, etc., over the years.

Romo was indeed the original “opener” in 2018 when he played for the Rays. Romo will always be remembered for 2 things; striking out future Hofer Miguel Cabrera in the World Series and being the original opener for Tampa Bay.

I would be completely stunned if the stingy M’s ownership gave Stanek 10 mill. Still, I was probably too low at 3 mill. More likely around 6-7 mill given that it’s a 1-yr deal.

Even if things are going good for ownership and the FO, Dipoto loathes spending more than like 5 million a year on a reliever. Last time he did that was back in 2017, when he signed lefty Marc Rzepcynski to a 2yr/$11M contract. Stanek has been decent, but his track record is inconsistent enough to not really demand much more than $3-5 million.

this late in the off-season (which is actually over!) it’s very likely $3-4 million max. Might even be $1.5 mil or $2 mil with incentives. There’s not a chance in the world they paid him $10 million or anything close to that.

Big difference between a Bellinger/Chapman contract and a mediocre middle-innings reliever.

Exactly Beer Can. This is a very good depth signing, and it’s always a bonus to leech away from a Divisional opponent. So Stanek gets knocked down a peg or two later on? Who cares? That’s a good indication that you have a good ‘pen.

Rocker wants Stanek to be so bad for some reason. I’ve seen 4 separate comments where he bags on him even though the numbers don’t lie.

He has been inconsistent through his career, and he’s 32 now, to be fair. I get it if someone is skeptical about him, but Rocker does not care for nuance beyond “he was bad last year lolololol”

Good luck!!! Most stressful pitcher I have ever watched. Dude throws it as hard as possible with no F’ing clue where it’s going. Hits guys, walks guys, creates traffic then gives up bombs!! Yes he throws 100 MPH, but good lord he’s terrible.

He’s really not that bad. He had one of his best BB9 last season (3.7). Plus, he’s only hit 7 batters in his major league career (347 IP). You don’t have to like him but I don’t see the hate for him!

Well he’s a 6th inning/low leverage guy for Seattle, so given the numbers over the past few years, doesn’t sound too bad at $4M to me.

Ironically Stanek is now the highest paid reliever on the Mariners. So wild how they put together such a great bullpen and the total cost still around half of what Hader is gonna make this year.

That’s the wild part. He will probably be the 5th (maybe 4th) most important bullpen piece, yet the most expensive.

Helps having your best guys all under 26 making under 2 million. I think more than anything they needed Stanek to help with innings since they’re slow playing Santos/Brash, and Kowar is now banged up. I doubt they sign him if everyone was healthy and on schedule, so this is probably mild desperation on their part.

I think he’s a fine re-tread though. I’ve had my eye on him all offseason as a cheap, middle relief arm. If he keeps the ball in the park then he should outpace his peripherals and xStats once again.

Snell will be worn out this year after pitching way more innings to get a contract. Be ready for hurt or bad in’24 for whoever signs him. Don’t offer more than 2yrs either. Until proven otherwise, doesn’t seem fully motivated unless $ on the line.
That is what happened after his first pre-arb extension. Whether fair or not, execs notice that sort of thing when someone wants the big bucks.

I agree, Snell is money driven. If he takes a short opt out deal he will pitch well again to try to get that big contract but if you give him the big contract he will not give his best effort unfortunately.

It’s absolutely crazy that Snell, Montogomery and even JD Martinez have not signed yet. Boras is losing another game of chicken with MLB clubs. They have about 2 more weeks to find a ‘market’ deal. After that, their prices are going way down, especially for a 1 year deal. All 3 will need extended spring training in order to get ready for the season.

their prices have already gone way done — even if Boras won’t admit it. Did you see what Bellinger (3/80) and Chapman (3/54) got after demanding $200+ million all winter for those guys! F Scott Boras. I love that he’s eating crap

It’s important that context is added, though. Bellinger got 3/80 but with $30M in year 1 and the ability to opt out each subsequent year in case he rebounds all the way. Chapman got 3/54 with $21M in year 1 and the ability to opt out each subsequent year in case he rebounds, too. On 1 year deals, those are fine AAVs. Both could end up getting a big contract next offseason (although I was already down on Chapman and don’t think he will), but if not, they can sign similar deals. At some point it could very well equal out to the long-term deals they was seeking (but more likely Bellinger than Chapman).

As an Astro fan, I will miss his fire and clear desire to win and do well.

But his fastball, while 100 mph is still very hittable if you are looking for it, and his command/control is so poor he needs to throw it too often.

He is a fine 5th guy in a bullpen but those guys need to be pre-arbitration or 1st/2nd year arbitration to have real value.

There is reason he only pitched 3 innings out of 13 games in the 2022 postseason, and 4 innings out of 11 games in 2023 despite the Astros pitching being absolutely cooked.

Not every team is built the same, though. For a team that barely has a dollar guaranteed to a pen arm beyond this year, Stanek on a 1 year/$4M deal has real value to them. Maybe he wouldn’t to other teams whose rosters are structured differently–but the M’s have three top 20 relievers in baseball and each are affordable. So as long as the budget allowed, adding a solid vet to that group was important, in my opinion. I don’t see this as a bad use of resources or lacking value to this specific organization.

Plus it’s only a one year contract so they can easily dump him if he sucks. It’s a good deal with little downside.

The Mariners have done it a bit differently. Munoz, Brash, and Santos are their high leverage guys and they’re all making next to nothing in terms of salary. Stanek is only making 4 million, maybe 6 million if he’s awesome enough to reach all the incentives. It’s a decent value deal. Their entire bullpen is costing about half of Hader’s annual salary your Astros are paying him, and is projected to do just as well as all of the other contenders.

It’s gonna be a fun season.

To be clear, I don’t think it’s a bad deal at all. That salary is what I was referring as valuable and as a 6th-7th inning guy he is solid.

Teams just need to not try to make him a leverage guy or pay him $8M+

none of those players are better than Stanek. The inclusion of Austin F Pruitt is laughable. Nobody wanted to give Pruitt a big-league deal because he doesn’t miss bats. 30 K’s in 48 innings last year — and his ERA is usually well over 4.00.

BigRedMachine’s dream has finally come true! Why would this controversial? They paid him around the going rate for a reliever of his caliber. Like many posting here, I like the fastball, have concerns about his control, know about his up and down seasons, but projection wise, he’s a middle reliever and being paid like one, and probably projects to be their 5th best reliever. I’m surprised they got him, but with Kowar’s injury and the questions about Brash’s and Santos’ health, they were going to do something, and who knows, maybe they can help him find another gear.

What a great signing for the Mariners. The timing is impeccable. Great job. Seattle fans should be thankful. I can think of at least 4 other teams that could have really used him. Taking the leap when required is something that all teams should take note of, and try to emulate.

Look at who the Mets gave 1/4m deals to in their pen and remind me why Stearns is supposed to be a genius?

Or look what backup IFers are signing for and remind me why Stearns just had to have Joey Wendle (34 years old, 5o OPS+, –0.2 WAR) so early in the offseason for 1/2m?

Stearns was brought in to rebuild the Mets from the bottom up because he successfully did that with a much smaller market team in Milwaukee. Signing low level depth pieces buys them a little extra time to develop the next wave of top prospects, and if those depth guys bounce back they can be flipped for more prospects or they ride the hot hand and make a run.

Cohen tried buying a ring in the last couple of years since he became an owner and it didn’t amount to anything. He had one competitive year and then some mediocre ones so far. Right now, the Braves are a juggernaut in the East and the Phillies are built up enough to make deep playoff runs. It’s going to be tough for the Mets to get back to that level unless Cohen wants to pump all of his money into it, and well, the free agent market was/is really thin on talent this winter. It’s a good idea to step back and see what they have.

Mariners don’t really need him to be The Guy. They have Munoz as the closer, and Brash/Santos as the high leverage setup men. They’re slow playing Santos & Brash due to early spring injuries, and their other middle reliever, Kowar, is getting evaluated for an injury of his own. If all of them were healthy and on schedule, I doubt they would have signed Stanek. He’ll keep a setup spot warm for a couple weeks, then move back down to a 6th/7th inning kind of role when everyone comes back.

I don’t understand the hate here. Brash, Kowar (who was an impressive longshot in his brief time in Peoria), and Santos are questionable, injury-wise. Add a guy with some experience and a 98 mph fastball to that coaching staff that does wonders with everyone else, and it’s a solid pickup. Nice work, Jerry.
