Padres To Name Jackson Merrill Opening Day Center Fielder

By Nick Deeds | March 17, 2024 at 7:23pm CDT

The Padres are poised to name top prospect Jackson Merrill the club’s Opening Day center fielder, per a report from MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. The news comes just days before the club is set to face the Dodgers in a two-game regular season set in South Korea as part of MLB’s Seoul Series. Game 1 of that set is scheduled for 5:05am CT Wednesday morning, or 7:05pm local time that evening. The club will need to select Merrill’s contract before then, but won’t need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move as the roster currently stands at 36.

Merrill, 21 in April, was the club’s first-round pick in the 2021 draft and is a consensus top-20 prospect in the sport. The youngster is something of a surprising choice for the role, at least on paper. He’s not yet played a game above Double-A in his big league career, having slashed a solid but unspectacular .277/.326/.444 in 114 games split between the High-A and Double-A levels last year. Perhaps even more importantly, Merrill had never appeared in center field in a professional game until camp opened last month. His professional outfield experience to that point consisted of 45 innings of work in left field that season. Prior to that, his professional work had come almost exclusively at shortstop, though he also made brief cameos at both first and second base.

With all that being said, the club’s decision to go with Merrill in center field on Opening Day is certainly a defensible one. Prospect evaluators around the game are unanimous in their belief in Merrill’s talent, with Baseball America lauding him as a future middle-of-the-order threat who figures to have the power for 30 homers a year while Fangraphs describes him as having “one of the prettiest swings in the minors” with excellent contact abilities. Furthermore, while his lack of upper-level reps at the plate and professional time in center field will certainly raise some eyebrows, Merrill has clearly done everything he can to prove himself ready for a big league opportunity this spring. In 40 plate appearances across 13 games during camp, Merrill slashed an excellent .351/.400/.595 while playing solid defense in center.

Of course, the decision to roster Merrill as the club’s Opening Day center fielder is also the results of a host of other decisions outside of Merrill’s control. Chief among them is the club choosing to part ways with superstar Juan Soto alongside Trent Grisham in a trade with the Yankees that removed two of the club’s three Opening Day starters in the outfield last year from the roster back in December. Since then, the club has been tied to external outfield options including Michael A. Taylor, Kevin Kiermaier, and Tommy Pham. The likes of Taylor and Kiermaier have since signed elsewhere, however, and while there may be some momentum toward a deal with Pham, the 36-year-old veteran hasn’t appeared in center field on a regular basis since 2018, with just 15 starts up the middle in the years since then.

That lack of clear options for the center field job led the Padres to look toward their internal, non-roster pieces for their next center fielder. Fellow prospect Jakob Marsee as well as veterans such as Oscar Mercado and Tim Locastro all joined Merrill as potential solutions in center when camp began last month, though of that group only Mercado was able to keep up with Merrill’s blistering performance this spring and the club recently tipped their hand regarding their decision by including only Merrill, corner bats Jose Azocar and Jurickson Profar, and right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. as outfielders on their 31-man travel roster for the Seoul Series.

It’s possible Merrill won’t be the only rookie with minimal upper-minors experience on the club’s Opening Day lineup, as the club also included Graham Pauley on their travel roster for the coming series. The Athletic’s Dennis Lin indicated last week that Pauley was likely in position to fill in for veteran third baseman Manny Machado at the hot corner to open the season, as Machado will begin the season at DH while he recovers from elbow surgery, which he underwent back in October. Pauley, 23, was a 13th-round pick by the Padres in the 2022 draft and enjoyed a breakout season last year as he slashed a whopping .308/.393/.539 in 127 games split between the Single-A, High-A, and Double-A levels.

Shortstop is the most athletic position in baseball.

Consensus around the league is draft shortstops, the athleticism translates.

Of course I was. Still am.

Not mad at Preller. I like Merrill. He earned it.

Not at all upset with Preller,Shildt or the players.

The post Peter Seidler ownership group has underfunded the team.

Preller gets the credit for the creative acquisition of Cease.

I still firmly believe ownership would make Preller the fall guy in a heartbeat to justify “jettisoning” personell due to “performance”.

Ownership has proven this offseason that they are all about the bottom line. That hasn’t changed.

I support the team but not the ownership group until they prove they want to win.

          I didn’t say that.

I am happy with Merrill and the fact he was given the opportunity over an Azocar/Profar OF.

I like Azocar, but not as a starter.

I am unhappy with how little funding the team has recieved this offseason forcing a Merrill promotion as the only option.

Preller’s hands are tied by a stingy Post Peter Seidler ownership group.

          “Stingy”

They’ve spent quite a lot this off season

          Yuki Matsui
          Woo Suk Go
          Wandy Peralta
          Taking on Ceases contract

Ifa spending on mainly on DeVries

Plus the spending they’re gonna do on the draft this year.

They’re very close (10 mill or less) to the tax penalty line. Last year signing Bogaerts cost them 1 mill in IFA money where they had to trade Dickerson for IFA money to sign Humberto Cruz

Padres are also drafting 25 instead of 15 cause they had their draft slot knocked back as a penalty also.

They literally can’t afford in multiple ways to break the CBA spending again cause the penalties will cost them ifa money, affect draft slots again.

I love his contact ability but it seems like a bit of a gamble to be so aggressive with him. New to the OF, new to CF, new to big league pitchers. It would be seriously impressive if he manages to succeed but even the best might struggle in this situation.

I mean, padres can always replace him late in games when up in the 8th or 9th with Azocar.

But no time like the present. Trial by fire.

If he can bat .230-.270, obp of .310-.350, ops of .390-.450 and provide solid defense (not provide negative defense)

I’d consider that a win. Obviously better offense would be welcomed but league average offense and league average defense in a rookie year in CF would be a win.

If Grisham were still around, I think Merrill would have won the LF job, instead. And we;d be better off for it. Grish is underrated due to his poor batting averages, but he still posts roughly league-average OBPs, so he’s not killing an offense. Totally agree on the retreads, though. I have no desire to see our Padres set money on fire for medicrities.

I like Grisham, but he became the new “Myers”, i.e. strikeouts at all the wrong times, with an occaional clutch HR. Maybe he’ll bounce back with the Yankess.

Between Grisham and Snell, they had me climbing the walls (or fast forwarding, since I watch most games on MLB.tv time delayed). Now they’re gone, so no more sub-Medoza line/strike outs and painfully slow, high pitch count innings.

Oh, but now we have Profar and Crease. 🙁

Lol, that’d be an interesting question to throw out there. Who on the current 40 man roster would be most like Grisham with the bat? Profar came to mind, cause lately, he’s been “meh”. I think even Azocar outhit Grisham.

Loved Grisham’s defense, but that can be more easily replaced than a good bat. Even if Merrill was starting in LF, most scouts believe Azocar can play elite defense. He certainly has the elite speed and jump.

The last two seasons Grisham hit .191/.300/.347/.647 for an 84 OPS+. 16% below MLB average. That is not acceptable performance unless the player has exceptional power.

Pauley’s earned his shot, like Merrill. If the rookies can’t cut it on the first try, they are more the norm for prospects than the exception. That’s what options are for.

I know that they’re different players, but Pauley reminds me of Ty France (well, when he was hitting hot, anyhow; not sure what happened last year in Seattle). Big difference between Pauley and Merrill, by the way, is that Merrill was drafted out of high school, while Pauley is older, and came out of an excellent Duke baseball program.

Let him play and prove he belongs.

Merrill has elite bat to ball skills. He is 6’3/4 so he will likely grown into more power.

Think he will be okay in center and get better as the season goes along.

Padres will have a former shortstop in LF, CF, RF, 3b, SS, 2b and 1b. Every position but catcher and of course pitcher. Plus they have another stud shortstop they just signed in Vries.

Pauley hasn’t played above AA and is a mediocre fielder. He will go down to AAA to get some work in. Him sitting on a bench watching others play does nothing for his development. Instead we will be look at an extremely sub-average bench of Rosario, Higashioka, Azocar, and Wade or Sullivan. Bunch of stiffs. Including presumptive LF Jurickson Profar. Hopefully Preller is going to make a couple of deals before next week’s opener in SD.

Well, Padres need a DH, and they’ve put defensive players much worse than Pauley out there. If Pauley’s bat plays, they’ll make a place for him. So far, Pauley’s bat has played at all levels.

From what I have read the last 2 players to start on opening day in CF before their 21st birthday were Trout and Griffey Jr. Trout had 91 games in AA when he was called up. Griffey had 17 games in AA before he was called up.. I don’t think the lack of playing time in AA is something that would preclude the Padres from giving him the job. Apparently the Padres have seen enough to give him the #3. Getting a single digit number is usually a sign that the team believes the player will stick on their team.

Remember, most of these players have been playing baseball since a very young age. The best defensive players on the field at most levels are always the shortstops, If they can play SS, then they can play anywhere. Many SSs also were pitchers in HS and/or college.

Glad to see the Padres Front Office, FINALLY, “seeing the light”, playing their best young talent and not burying them on the beach or in AA or AAA. or just trading the out of town to star on other teams. Preller’s hand was forced by strict new budget constraints issued by the Padres New Managing Partner.
The New Padres budget is in effect forcing AJ Preller to use “all the tools” in his Front Office toolbox and not just trade for and/or sign overpriced free agents and declining veteran players with large contracts.
    Smart moves 2.0
Promote catching phenom Ethan Salas by the All Star break and give him the starting catching job. Move Campusano to 1B, LF, DH duties for his bat. Promote LHSP Robbie Snelling for #5 starter job.. The more producing, hungry, young players on the Padres roster=the better chance the Padres have in securing a Wild Card playoffs spot.
