The Red Sox have acquired left-hander Bailey Horn from the White Sox, per announcements from both clubs. The White Sox, who designated him for assignment in recent days, will receive cash considerations. The southpaw has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Horn was a fifth-round pick by the ChiSox in the shortened 2020 draft. The Sox dealt the Auburn product to the Cubs the following season in exchange for veteran reliever Ryan Tepera. Horn pitched his way to Triple-A in the Cubs system and was added to the 40-man roster last offseason. While the Cubs were wary about losing Horn in the Rule 5 draft, they pushed him off the 40-man before Opening Day.
The Sox reacquired their one-time draftee in a deal that sent minor league pitcher Matt Thompson to the Cubs. Horn spent a couple weeks on optional assignment to Triple-A Charlotte. He got out to a rough start, allowing 13 runs over 10 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old surrendered four homers and issued 10 free passes, although he did record 15 strikeouts. The White Sox never called him up before last week’s DFA.
Boston has a few openings on the 40-man roster after recent DFAs of Pablo Reyes and Joely Rodríguez. They’ve recently subtracted Rodríguez and Joe Jacques (who was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks) from their left-handed relief depth. They’ll partially backfill the depth with Horn, who has a full slate of options and has missed plenty of bats in the minor leagues. Boston chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is certainly familiar with Horn, as Breslow had spent the past few seasons as an assistant general manager with the Cubs.

Cash Considerations make the chairman happy.
Aiden Awe
Yes, getting cash considerations to just spend all on the bullpen.
fermier
It could be worse. Jerry could have spent a lot of money on a long term contract for Jose Abreu!
Bucket Number Six
He did. It surprisingly worked out for 2020-22.

I was wondering who the first jabroni would be to say this.

acel – Werner deserves to be mocked endlessly for the infamous lie.
Red Sox Nation will continue to hold the front office accountable for the sins they committed over the past 7 months.
GASoxFan
Fever – *past 56 months* is more like it.
Your time frame is a bit off. Really I exclude breslow from most blame over his tenure due to the limitations he faced. He hasn’t been faultless, but, when I look at totality of circumstances I see a distinct pattern. I think he’s done well overall with what he’s had to work with thus far.
I don’t need to see gravity to understand how invisible forces push and full things to wind up a certain way. Likewise I don’t need to know exactly what ownership decided amongst themselves since summer 2019, or since last fall, to see a pattern in how things were impacted.

Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – I totally agree, Breslow has done the best possible job considering the conditions he’s had to deal with.
I keep thinking back to one of the articles I read recently, about how the free agents who signed with the Red Sox the past few years are angry because they were deceived into thinking ownership would spend to put a winner on the field.
It’s going to be extra-hard attracting good free agents at reasonable prices due to the lack of trust in Sox ownership.
Joemo
Fever – I don’t think it will be hard to convince players to play for the new regime. I can definitely understand players like (I assume) Kenley and Martin feeling duped by Bloom. While prospects don’t always pan out, the Sox should have a good core going forward.
I could see players getting excited to play for the new regime, especially if they stick around 0.500 this season. The hardest part of convincing a FA to play in Boston should be forcing FSG to actually pay for them.
acell10
It’s beyond played out at this point.
Bobby smac9
@ Fever/ perhaps JH had not kept him in the loop, and he was blindsided ?
Fever Pitch Guy
Joe – I dunno, when you create a reputation over a 5-year period it’s hard to shake that reputation.
The Red Sox have shown how badly they treat their homegrown stars like Mookie, Xander etc..
They have shown it’s usually one-contract-and-done with guys such as Duvall, Turner, Wacha, etc.
They have shown an unwillingness to spend in order to address needs.
And they have shown an unwillingness to acquire talent at the trade deadline even when they are in the thick of the race.
They also have shown quite often to be dishonest with the players.
Add it all up, I can see why so many view Boston as an undesirable destination for players.
acell10
The treating players badly (and managers for that matter) predated this regime although Luccihino was a master of the hit piece being dropped after players or personal left.
Bigger issue at the deadline was picking a lane although Schwarber was brought in 2021.
Fever Pitch Guy
Bobby – As the second in command I find it difficult to believe Werner was left out, but who knows …. could be.

Fever, if the top exec aside from the owner isn’t properly what i call ‘communicating downwards’ by giving accurate info about your overall budget and operating parameters he’s not doing his primary job.
I would think, particularly, this stuff came up during interviews and discussions with potential head of ops.
It *could* be he was overruled somehow, but, again, that goes back to his need to properly so called ‘communicate upwards’ which is you run major official policy declarations by the boss before making them.
Either of those is a gross dereliction of duties, so, a guy with that tenurenandnexperience is unlikely to do it would be my presumption.
I also doubt the PGA project was quick or out of nowhere, and in any case, *all* of the parties concerned above breslow’s level invested in their personal capacity outside of FSG’s entity level investment in the PGA thing. So can’t cry loss of available earmarked funds very realistically.
These are sophisticated business people with decades of experience. They knew what they were doing, and, what the expected outcome was, when they did it.
That leaves it was done intentionally.
Your positive intent was if it was meant to get ohtani and/or Yamamoto to engage thinking you’d be serious about adding talent around them. (Didn’t work, as neither meaningfully engaged…) If you want a nefarious spin, it was to drive disaffected season ticked holders and/or early sale purchasers into giving the club another shot. I’d pick between those two before believing being overruled or miscommunication ahead of time.
Fever Pitch Guy
acel – We don’t know who was responsible for the hit pieces while Larry was still with the team, but it obviously continued long after he left so the common denominator is either John Henry, Tom Werner, or Sam Kennedy.
Look at what they did to Bloom after he left, that was just a few months ago.
Fever Pitch Guy
GASox – Excellent post as always, i totally agree.
acell10
no the hit pieces were largely Larry. They may have predated him but he continued the process. If anything the hit pieces have slowed down since Luchino left the team but he was always believed to be responsible.
Fever Pitch Guy
11.32 ERA at AAA this season …. he fits right in! Joely 2.0 is here!!!
stymeedone
How bad is your depth if you need to claim White Sox cast offs?
Hotdog 2
Red Sox are the most underrated team in mlb.3rd place and 86 wins coming
ibuititnoonecame
I hope your kidding
Hotdog 2
Porque?
Fever Pitch Guy
Dog – That distinction goes to the Guardians, look at what they are doing despite the key injuries. Tied for most wins in MLB.
I do think if Casas returns soon, and Grissom returns soon, and Devers stays healthy, and O’Neill stays healthy, and Rafaela performs better, and the team drastically reduces the errors, and Duran stays healthy, and Whitlock returns soon, and Pivetta returns soon, and Bello returns soon, and Martin pitches a lot better, and Crawford continues to pitch great, and Wong continues to hit great, the Sox have a chance at 4th place because Tampa’s time in the sun is over.
Hotdog 2
They have played bottom feeders
Fever Pitch Guy
Dog – You calling my team a bottom feeder? LOL!
So you start off by saying the Sox are a massively under-rated 86 win team. Then you call them bottom feeders. Too funny!!! All good though, I knew you weren’t really serious about the under-rated thing ;O)
BTW – Guards also beat the Yanks, Braves, Mariners and Twins.
Aiden Awe
Best of luck to him. Was drafted by the White Sox.

Deep I think the dumpster was so full he was in a bag on the outside in the elements.

Watched Tigers today, does anybody know the real reason how we lost Jason? He did a great job for White Sox. New guy not very good..
IronBallsMcGinty
Apparently a Sox marketing guy named Brooks Boyer didn’t like Benetti so they brought out the final year of his contract. Also (and this is a shocker) Detroit offered him more money.
Not everyone cared for Benetti but I liked him. I just can’t warm up to Schriffen. His “Southside Staaaaand Up” call is kinda lame.
Palehosed85
More “cash considerations” for the Pharaoh’s tomb…great. Jerry will have plenty to spend in the afterlife, seeing as he couldn’t give so much as a rat’s ass about the Sox or the Bulls.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Don’t mean to toot this dude’s horn but he’s capable of making a lot of noise, particularly when paired with Bennett Sousa. Could see him headed to the Yankeees at some point, where he could be a star in pinstripes forever.
