Dodgers Release Drew Pomeranz

By Darragh McDonald | May 24, 2024 at 9:40am CDT

Left-hander Drew Pomeranz has been released by the Dodgers, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. He had opted out of a previous deal with the Dodgers in April before re-signing. Whether he triggered an opt-out this time or not is unknown, but the result is that he’ll head back to the open market.

Pomeranz, 35, has been looking to mount a comeback this year after years in the injury wilderness. He signed a minor league deals with the Angels in the offseason but was released from that pact and, as mentioned, signed two separate minor league deals with the Dodgers.

Per his transactions tracker, Pomeranz was placed on the minor league injured list on April 21, but he recently returned to the mound. He tossed a scoreless inning on May 15, striking out two of the three batters he faced. On May 18, he tossed two innings, striking out five of the seven batters he faced while allowing one hit. Dodgers Daily provided video of that outing on X.

Based on those recent results, it would appear Pomeranz is in good form. Overall, he’s tossed nine innings this year with six earned runs allowed, but four of those were in his first appearance. In the eight innings since then, he has a 2.25 earned run average, 48.3% strikeout rate and 3.4% walk rate.

The southpaw had a good run as one of the best relievers in baseball. The Brewers acquired him at the 2019 deadline and moved him to the bullpen with great results, which prompted the Padres to sign him to a four-year deal. He continued to pitch very well in the first two years with San Diego. From the time Milwaukee traded for him through the end of 2021, Pomeranz threw 70 2/3 innings with a 1.91 ERA, 37.8% strikeout rate, 10.2% walk rate and 46.2% ground ball rate.

But he finished that 2021 campaign on the IL due to flexor tendon surgery and hasn’t been back in the majors since, missing out on the final two years of his deal with the Padres. His attempts to get back on the mound frequently resulted in setbacks and he required a “cleanup surgery” on his elbow in May of last year.

This year, he’s at least been on the mound and throwing more than he has in a while. He tossed eight innings for the Angels in the spring and has thrown nine more for Triple-A Oklahoma in the past two months. Since he circled back to the Dodgers on another minor league deal after opting out last month, perhaps the two sides will reunite yet again in the coming days. But the Dodgers also have a fairly crowded bullpen, which could perhaps lead Pomeranz to consider other clubs with a more open path back to the big leagues.

Here come the Cubs.. they’ll sign anyone with a pulse if they had an effective season in the last couple decades.

In the case of the White Sox, having a pulse is negotiable.

This is sure to those of us who thought Drew Pomerantz retired years ago.

There are two separate processing stations in the Cook County morgue. One is for voter registration and the other is for White Sox tryouts.

A lot of teams should be in on him for another minor league with an opt out. May even return to LA once he sees he can’t get a MLB contract. This is more about testing waters than really wanting to be out of a job at AAA. He can return on a series of similar contracts hoping for a call up in August so he can have a chance at a ring.

“so he can have a chance at a(nother) ring”

Although he didn’t pitch in the postseason and was only on the WS roster, Pomeranz won in 2018 with Boston

Pirates are desperate BUT also want roster flexibility (ie MiLB options)

There are many teams in need of bullpen help yesterday, so I’d be surprised if Pomeranz makes it through the day unsigned. CLE doesn’t really need another lefty in the pen or else he could return to his roots.

Wouldn’t mind the Jays bringing him in to replace Genesis Cabrera.

Its kind of sad that guys like Cole Sulser and Tyler Adcock get chances yet this guy who is a proven major league player can’t find any takers. Clueless GMs

Angels? Thought he was worthy of an opening roster spot. Better shot of reaching the big leagues again through them.

@orange he looked good in his first couple appearances in spring training the wheels fell off soon after. Angels just need to bring up the kids in the minors

only issue is we have kolarek and now amir garrett back in aaa is left-handed depth. actually, left handed relief is something of a strength for la, in comparison to the shape of the rest of the roster, until moore is traded around the deadline when jose quijada will hopefully be on track to return from injury

@pohle don’t think kolarek will make the roster, would’ve been called up already. The only way he does is if they sell off the bullpen.

I see Mets calling. Raley out for awhile with only Diekman as lhp in bullpen. Couldn’t hurt for league minimum and apparently have at least a 40 man spot available.

Steer clear. He’ll throw a few innings and land on the IL and then you’ll pay him all season. Even at the minimum, why pay.

This one is a head-scratcher. If the Dodgers bullpen is crowded it’s with an endless parade of nonentities who all get DFA’d after throwing a few innings. Pommeranz at least has some potential to stick, and he’s a lefty. Hard to figure why the likes of Hernandez and Banda are still around and Pommeranz is not.

Agreed. The FO’s philosophy and strategy on constructing a bullpen is utterly confusing. And then trading for Yohan Ramirez while optioning JP Feyereisen??? Watched him implode tonight in Cincy. Several of the guys brought in have no business being in the majors let alone playing in LA. While injuries are at the core of the problem, the endless shuffling and picking up guys with ERAs of 5+ is a head-scratcher. C’mon, Andrew, are you really that desperate??

For as much as we paid him to NOT pitch, a minor league deal with the pads seems reasonable.

His velo is really close to what it was in SD before the big injury. 14 k/9 and 1 BB/9 but 6 ERA in OKC. His BABIP is not outrageous. He did just return from an injury that kept him out nearly a month. Other than the fact he has no options so he would have to stick in the majors or be DFA, I wonder why the pitching needy Dodgers would release him?
