Mets Designate Jorge López For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | May 30, 2024 at 1:50pm CDT

The Mets have officially designated right-hander Jorge López for assignment, a move that was reported on yesterday. Left-hander Danny Young was recalled to take Lopez’s spot in a corresponding move.

The Mets have been in a rough patch lately, losing three in a row and eight of their last ten, and the frustration seemed to boil over with López yesterday. After allowing a home run to Shohei Ohtani, he was facing Freddie Freeman when a checked swing appeal to third resulted in a call of no swing. López seemingly said something to third base umpire Ramon De Jesus and was ejected. While making his way off the way off the field, he untucked his shirt and tossed his glove into the stands. Video shared on X by SNY.

After the game, López spoke to the media, though there was some confusion about what he said and what he intended. López, a native of Puerto Rico, spoke in English and some believed he called the Mets “the worst team in probably the whole f***ing MLB” while others heard him referring to himself as “the worst teammate” in the league. Later that night, it was reported that López would be designated for assignment.

Today, López seemed unhappy with the way things played out the night before. He posted on his Instagram stories this morning, stating that he was definitely saying “teammate” and sarcastically thanked the media for making the situation worse. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com posted on X this morning that López losing his roster spot had nothing to do with the team/teammate confusion, saying that López “embarrassed the organization with his actions and words, throwing his glove into the stands, lying about meeting with management and offering zero remorse.”

Reporters from López’s previous clubs have come to his defense today, trying to give larger context to the pitcher’s frustrations. Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun shared this story from 2022, when López was with the Orioles. The article discusses the recent death of López’s grandfather as well as López’s son Mikael, who has dealt with several autoimmune disorders since he was born and has spent much of his life in the hospital. Dan Hayes of The Athletic shared this story from last summer, when the Twins put López on the injured list for a mental health break. Boomer Esiason addressed the matter on his show today, as relayed by Awful Announcing on X, saying that he had been informed that Mikael is currently waiting for a transplant.

The extra information certainly makes it easier to understand how López reacted the way that he did, but it appears the Mets don’t consider that an acceptable excuse. Some observers have suggested that the Mets could have put López on the IL for mental health reasons, as the Twins did last year, but they have decided to take a different approach and have removed the righty from their roster.

The Mets will now have one week to trade López or pass him through waivers. In the latter scenario, López has the right to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency while holding onto the remainder of his $2MM salary, as a player with more than five years of major league service time.

He has logged 26 1/3 innings with the Mets this year, allowing 3.76 earned runs per nine innings. His 17.1% strikeout rate is subpar but his 9.9% walk rate and 44.2% ground ball rate are both around league average.

He had a breakout seasons as a reliever with the O’s in 2022. After years of fairly middling work as a starter, a move to the bullpen seemed to unlock something in the righty. In 48 1/3 innings with Baltimore, he had a 1.68 ERA, 27.6% strikeout rate, 8.7% walk rate and 60% ground ball rate.

He was flipped to the Twins at that year’s deadline but his results have backed up since then. He had a 4.37 ERA with Minnesota after the deal in 2022, then had a 5.95 ERA in 2023, ending up bouncing to the Marlins and Orioles later in the year. The O’s cut him at the end of the year, which freed him up to sign with the Mets.

Put yourself in the situation. Pressure from pro sports is one thing but what he has been going through seems like another level. He spontaneously had a meltdown. The club if you believe it contributed and there being no prior acts could have taken the high road and adjusted their stance to offer help. If there is in fact a big picture here, free agents may use Cohen’s money to get bigger offers elsewhere but why sign with the Mets? Remember, Stern chose to dismiss Buck without even talking to him. Stern may be great at what he does but he also seems to have warts.

Which was..? Cause I’m sure you’re referring to the woman who accused him of SA only for the DA to decline to press charges for both times they did it, weird she went back a second time after such a traumatic experience. Or the other women who accused him of the same thing only for HER to get charged for fraud and theft by extortion against him and another.

Now I’m not saying Bauer is a saint, he’s a headcase and most likely a clubhouse cancer because of his attitude and personality, but rough S*x isnt a crime and you can’t sit there and say he isn’t better than every teams #4 and #5 as well most team’s #3

I saw Hill’s texts. I saw Hill’s picture sleeping like a kitten. That’s really enough.

Hill can publicize all her evidence since there are no disclosure agreements. Like KC said, Bauer might be a complete a-hole. But it is time for everyone to concede that it is pretty likely that nothing happened.

Why would he have remorse if he didn’t do anything? “I’m sorry that her shakedown didn’t work”?

It’s kind of a simple question. If this was your son, would you want his life ruined when all the evidence clearly favors Bauer?

SUPERFAN: If he was found not to have done anything, why would he have remorse over it? Same thingwith understanding of his poor actions. What actions? Being wealthy sometimes leads to people pursuing you to get some of that cash. Could be this woman made this up to try to sue Bauer for a large chunk of his money. If George Steinbrenner was still alive, he’d probably give him a chance. Just a theory

@joebrady the first accuser might be the problem. The last two were money grabs hill would be prosecuted but California laws have her protected.i think he might’ve signed a nda nothing is mentioned about the case and that’s the one the mlb has evidence on otherwise he would have a case for a lawsuit. Hill did say she saw footage during the mlb investigation never said it was hers. The clubhouse cancer narrative doesn’t make sense because they could cut him after a couple starts

“Trashes Lopez..waste of skin”…The Mets did DFA Lopez so even they thought he was more trouble than he was worth. And since when did having personal family issues give you a pass to be a bad teammate and A-hole?. I doubt anyone wishes ill health to anyone’s children and all of us have home family issues of some kind, but personal issues don’t entitle you to throw objects and be an A-hole to your teammates, team manager and the general public. It seems these days, everyone is looking for excuses to justify bad behavior.

He had a brain fart and lost it. Look up Dwight Evans in 74 or 75. Two of his three kids had MAJOR health issues and he kept it inside and it showed in his performance. He was then outed by a reporter and for him, it seemed to be what he needed. His career took off. Unfortunately, people and situations are different and Lopez obviously had a meltdown. Without a prior history, the Mets should have in my personal view handled it differently unless he asked for his release.

“Have reporters…teams poor performance”…As much as I personally dislike America’s one sided, biased media, speaking with the MSM comes with the job of a professional athlete. Anyone who cannot successfully control their emotions when meeting publicly with the media needs to find a new line of work. Behaving like an idiot publicly and embarrassing your employers, despite having personal issues at home, is not tolerated by any business that relies on the good will of the general public.

“Uncle Stevie is full of dung”…A big reason N.Y teams underperform 90% of the time is the attitude of the toxic fanbase, city leaders and toxic N.Y media. They seem to enjoy kicking you while you’re down and in N.Y eating their own is a year round sport. You finally get an owner who tries and is willing to invest BIG in the team and you work relentlessly to run him out of town before he can fully implement his plan. It’s no big surprise that New York City just may be the dirtiest, most crime and drug ridden, toxic and most racially segregated and stratified city in the whole wide world.

The Mets announcer sounds like he’s on suicide watch in the video.

He needs some time with his family, but when he’s ready to come back, I think the Orioles would be the best fit. They can always use more arms, and he seems to fit in well there.

Bad behavior? Sure. Have I done worse? Probably.

Could he be a perfect teammate w Tommy Pham and the White Sox? “Sincerity” or brutal honesty when nobody asked is not a professional behavior. Don’t bite the hand feeding you. Ie. The team and the sport…

Hoping for the best for him and his son. We’re all human and deserve grace in trying times.

Lopez is now my favorite living ex-Met. Cohen ruined the team.

He doesn’t know how to manage his emotions, and he doesn’t know how to keep them like a pro wherever he goes. Nor ask for professional help such as a psychologist, pastor or priest. Without affecting who pays you as a team and the sport. He doesn’t know how to take his personal serious business to management and ask for personal time. Sincerity should not be confused with recklessness or indiscretion.

Grow up. Even more laughable is that you equate priests and pastors with shrinks. Lopez has done IL stints for mental health. His kid has bone cancer. Get a clue. He’s a better man than you.

If Lopez was performing well would you bring up his kid? If he is having a hard time in his personal life can’t he take time away like Ben Zobrist? Wouldn’t that be the grown up thing to do if he’s struggling? Is there a solution that is better than the one you have given here? Seems it is ok to use his kid when his performance is going bad.

Whether his English was hard to hear or not, at least he tried and did it without an interpreter. Ohtani on the other hand being 6 years in the league…..

Come on now, you know Ohtani’s interpreter is of paramount importance. How else can he place million dollar bets without repercussions?

MLB relievers need “thick skin” to forget about bad games and bad calls to move on. Lopez does not have this.
