Angels Reinstate, Option Sam Bachman

By Darragh McDonald | June 14, 2024 at 5:49pm CDT

The Angels announced that right-hander Sam Bachman has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Double-A Rocket City. The 40-man roster already had a vacancy with infielder Niko Goodrum being claimed off waivers by the Pirates earlier this week, but the roster is now full with this move.

Bachman, 24, underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery in the fall and wasn’t fully healed by Opening Day. He was placed on the 60-day injured list when the club selected Miguel Sanó in late March. Bachman began a rehab assignment at the end of May and has been getting stretched out, throwing three innings in each of his last two outings.

The Angels currently have a rotation mix consisting of Tyler Anderson, Patrick Sandoval, Griffin Canning, José Soriano and José Suarez. For now, Bachman will continue getting stretched out but could be a candidate for some major league starts later in the year. The Halos are 26-42 and one of the few clubs firmly in the seller camp ahead of the trade deadline. If any of those starters get traded or suffer an injury, Bachman could perhaps get a look in the majors, though Reid Detmers will also be in the mix after being optioned a few weeks ago.

Bachman made his major league debut last year with a 3.18 earned run average in 17 innings. He was placed on the injured list in July due to right shoulder inflammation and stayed there the rest of the year, eventually undergoing the aforementioned surgery. He was able to get 129 days of service time last season, mostly on the IL, leaving him 43 days shy of the one-year mark. He was able to get over that line here in 2024 by spending over two months on the injured list but his clock will stop ticking forward now that he has been optioned.

If only they could acquire Justin Turner. Then they could finally kick that offense into Overdrive and Take care of Business. The duo will start mashing Homers and be like ‘You ain’t seen nothin Yet!’

The highest Angels draft pick in a quarter century was wasted on Bachman. Perry gets another draft he’s sure to screw up.

Adell was the 10th overall pick and you give him unlimited chances over the past five years. Bachman was the 9th pick and you write him off after 17 innings? I don’t think Bachman is a finished product after 17 innings of 3.18 ERA ball. Let’s give him a chance.

I wrote him off quicker than that. Go to the thread where they signed him.

As far as Adell, great tools. You can swing for the fences with these picks, Adell, or you can take the low upside but probable major league player with these picks, Schanuel. Or you can give yourself no shot and take an often injured, short arm delivery pitcher and throw away the pick.

I prefer the high tools, high risk. Some prefer the high floor, low ceiling player.

Who put Perry prefers the bad mechanics, sore armed pitcher who’s best case scenario is a bullpen arm.

Adell has great tools if you look past the poor defense, poor baserunning, poor plate control, poor pitch recognition and poor bat to ball skills.

As for Bachman coming out of college, a 30-second search found a May 2021 Baseball Prospectus article discussing 10 prospects who should hear their name called early on draft day – Bachman was one of the 10. Another Baseball Prospectus article referred to Bachman as an exciting talent with a triple-digit fastball and a plus slider.

If your going to give Adell eight years, shouldn’t you give Bachman more than 17 innings? You say Adell can develope further after eight years of professional baseball yet Bachman can make no adjustments or develop further after 17 innings? I don’t think you are being consistent.

Poor defense? You do realize he was defensive outfielder of the month in May? That’s for all of baseball. That’s as far as I got with the stupidest comment of the month.

@halo11fan his decision making on the basepaths is infuriating that could bleed into the outfield. Still remember when he had a ball bounce on his head and go over the fence. He reminds me of rengifo just inconsistent. Rengifo was good on defense for a month until he started throwing to the wrong base again

His base running has been awful, but when someone has to exaggerate a point to the point of lying, then he has no point.

As far as the ball bouncing off him, that was 2020, this is 2024, he’s turned into a pretty good outfielder.

And you know is last on the Angels in outs above average, Rengifo…again.

So after eight years of professional baseball, Adell has turned into a pretty good outfielder, but after 17 innings and a 3.18 ERA, Bachman is not capable of improving? You don’t have to have valid opinions, but they should at least be consistent.

Baserunning, plate control, pitch recognition, bat to ball skills… thoughts? I didn’t think so.

fwiw, Neto and Rengifo have the same OAA. Keep plugging away, buddy. I’m in your corner.

Go back to the thread where the Angels signed Bachman. I said it three years ago. If anything I’ve been validated. I can’t explain it better than that.

Except for defense, where Adell was the the DRS leader in all Major League Baseball in May, (9 runs saved), everything you say about him is true.

For me, high draft picks are about tools. Bachman mechanics were horrible, Schanuel looks like he’s forgotten what made him a high floor player, and Adell hasn’t utilized his.

Triple didgit fastball and a plus slider according to Baseball Prospectus qualify as great tools. And mechanics can be easily tweaked. With tools like that, you should blindly defend Bachman for eight years not throw him under the bus after 17 innings.

I said it three years ago. The Angels used the best pick this century on a best case scenario high leverage RP.

Again, everything I said three years ago has been proven accurate. And his ERA at AA is almost five. And he’s six months younger than Adell.

You blindly defend the #10 overall pick, Adell, after eight years of professional ball, a negative career WAR and an OPS+ of 76 yet you write off Bachman with a triple digit heater and plus slider after 17 innings. Can you see how someone may think you’re being inconsistent? If you believe Adell can improve, is it conceivable that Bachman can improve? Or do you believe Bachman was drafted as a finished product and could never develop further?

I told you three years ago what was going to happen to Bachman… AND IT HAPPENED!!! He has less than 100 minor league innings in three years.

As far as Adell, he’s not very good. But Barrel 92%, bat speed 99%, sprint speed 92%. He’s a tools player. They don’t always pan out. But someone with tools has a better chance than those without.

Schanuel, bat speed 1%, barrel 9%, Hard hit rate 5%. If he’s walking at less than league average, which he is, he’s not going to make much of an impact.

Nope. But I said it was a wasted pick, and his upside is an RP. Like Schanuel, not the guy you draft where he was drafted.

And it’s more evidence Perry is clueless.

I could never understand why you’re an Angels fan. You hate the owner, front office and all the players except Adell and Rendon. You criticize every manager and nearly every move the manager makes – lineups, bullpen utilization, etc. I guess we all root for our teams diferrently.

I don’t hate any player. I root for them all. But they are who they are. The team gets worse and worse every year. Our future looks worse and worse every year. Our system gets worse and worse every year.

You think being a fan of the team and thinking Minasian stinks are mutually exclusive?

I can’t believe anyone with a brain thinks that way.

Yep, they should have traded Adell four years ago.

There are these players with great tools, who don’t have the skills to control the strike zone. They are a tweak away from being special, but it’s a significant tweak.

Then there are the players with rotten tools, but the skill to control the strike zone. Those players have absolutely no chance to be a special player.

At pick number 10 or 11. I’ll take the tools guy.

This was the #9 pick from Minasian’s first draft as GM. He was fast tracked to the majors. Just like all the others. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of David Clyde?

I remember Clyde. He was a high school pick. And I remember D. Enberg asking Jim Fregosi about Clyde in a pregame interview.

Anyone who looked at Bachman knew he had almost no chance to be a starter. Go look at the first Bachman threads.

Very early on it was clear Minasian had no clue.

@halo11fan not saying minasian isn’t incompetent. It’s also has to do with the owner that has hired gms that have no clue, with no tools to succeed because he gutted everything.
