Dana Brown: “Don’t See Any Scenario” Where Astros Sell At Deadline

By Anthony Franco | June 3, 2024 at 11:21pm CDT

The Astros came back to beat the Cardinals tonight. They’re now 27-34, seven games below .500 and as many back of the Mariners in the AL West. Houston has yet to fire on all cylinders as they seek an eighth straight trip to the AL Championship Series; they’ve yet to climb above .500 after starting the season with a four-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees.

Even as the team has floundered, general manager Dana Brown has painted an optimistic picture in his public comments. Brown told the MLB Network on May 7 that he “couldn’t envision” selling at the deadline. He doubled down on that assertion before tonight’s win. “I don’t see any scenario where we’re sellers,” the GM told the Houston beat (link via Chandler Rome of the Athletic). “I think we’re going to be buyers.”

On the one hand, it’s not surprising that Brown reiterated the stance he expressed a month ago. Even if the front office were privately beginning to consider selling scenarios, it’s far enough from the deadline that Brown is unlikely to publicly declare as much. Houston has a veteran roster that certainly entered the season with championship aspirations. That said, the Astros haven’t done much to change their fortunes in the four weeks since Brown’s last declaration.

Houston held a 12-22 record heading into play on May 7, placing them seven games back in the division. They’ve been better over the past month, going 15-12 over their last 27 contests, but it hasn’t been the kind of resounding play they’ll need to eventually pull out from the hole they dug with a terrible April. Houston’s division deficit hasn’t changed in the last four weeks (though Seattle has jumped the Rangers for the top spot).

The upcoming few weeks could offer that opportunity. Houston has series against the Angels, White Sox, Rockies and Mets in June. They also have two more against St. Louis and three games apiece with the Giants, Tigers and Orioles. Asked whether a poor performance over the next six to eight weeks could force the Astros to sell, Brown said the team “would have to really fall apart” to change direction. “The pitching would have to be struggling. The hitters would have to be struggling. If there’s any sign of hope, I can’t see us doing it,” he added.

To that end, Brown said the front office would like to bring in another bat, preferably a left-handed hitter. Houston is down to Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez and Jon Singleton as lefty hitters on the MLB roster. Backup catcher Victor Caratini is a switch-hitter, while lefty-swinging rookie Joey Loperfido was optioned to Triple-A when José Abreu returned to the MLB roster last week.

Brown’s comments came before Tucker left this evening’s contest when he fouled a ball off his right shin. The star right fielder, who is playing at an MVP level, was on crutches in the clubhouse after the game (noted on X by Adam Spolane of SportsRadio 610). Tucker fortunately told reporters that x-rays came back negative, but that’ll be a situation worth monitoring over the next few days.

First base still stands as the biggest question mark in the Houston lineup. Abreu has only collected three hits in six games since being recalled. His season batting line sits at .115/.170/.161 in 94 plate appearances. Singleton has drawn enough walks to be a roughly average hitter against right-handed pitching. That’s far superior to Abreu’s work but still not imposing at a bat-first position.

The Astros’ biggest need is arguably on the other side of the ball, however. Houston’s rotation has been hit hard by injury and poor performance from their back-end starters. While the club could welcome Lance McCullers Jr. and Luis Garcia back midseason, they’re in danger of losing José Urquidy for the year. Cristian Javier’s status remains up in the air as he evaluates treatment options for forearm discomfort. Depth starter J.P. France is on the Triple-A injured list with a shoulder concern.

Framber Valdez, Justin Verlander, Ronel Blanco, Hunter Brown and Spencer Arrighetti make up Houston’s current rotation. The latter two righties have had particularly rough seasons. Arrighetti has allowed nearly six earned runs per nine through his first nine MLB starts. Brown’s ERA sits narrowly above 6.00. Both pitchers (especially Brown) have looked better in May after being rocked in the season’s first month, but the Astros have very few options behind them if anyone else suffers an injury. Left-hander Eric Lauer is their only upper minors starter with much MLB experience.

Life must be really rough for you. I’m assuming you’re a grown man, yet you’re so weak as a person that 7 years later you still openly cry about that. If sports consumes you to that degree, I’d urge you to seek professional help so you can grow up and life a meaningful life.

The Astros have gone 5-13 in one-run games thus far. I don’t think they’re out of the race if Tucker only needs a few days off.

Unfortunately though, how teams fare in one-run games is usually very telling of how they are built.

If Houston really does want SP and Seattle, being in the same division won’t trade with them.. I’d name of Miami right away as the next obvious team going nowhere fast, which has young and controlable decent starters.. BUT.. Does Houston have anything to get quality/young starters Miami would want? Remember, every team has a need for quality starters and many have decent farm systems with decent prospects they can deal.

Even if the Mariners weren’t in the same division, why would they trade from their rotation while they’re 34-27? They’re better off finding someone who wants prospects if they’re going to acquire a bat.

Mariners haven’t been #1 in the division on June 1st since 2003 and we all know what happened from 2002-2003

Dana is a joke. Be a miracle if does anything. Still, stuck on broken record of we have a great team.

    Altuve has gone downhill
Alvarez not the same this season
Bregman has stunk till last few games
Abreu has lost it so needs to go
    Singleton needs to go
    Chas needs to go
Diaz switch to backup and Caratini main catcher
Tucker is great but could be out a bit

Fire Espada, Dana, pitching and hitting coaches
Would not go further with any of these even into next season

Astros will not make playoffs. Dana is so full of it and more if thinks they will

@Texgal- This comment is very reactionary. The season is not even halfway over and the Astros are only 7 out.

Altuve has been great this season: 127 wRC+ and 1.5 fWAR, basically on pace for 4 fWAR. Yordan is still mashing. Giving up on a 25 year old catcher who mashed last season is silly. Firing Espada and Dana won’t do much when Crane is one of the most involved owners in the sport.

Much of your post is accurate.

But I think you need to rethink your thoughts on Bregman.

He had a terrible April but over the past 30 days, his wRC+ is 132 and 46th out of 181 qualified hitters. That’s top 25%.

30 days is not “the last few games”

Sure they won’t be sellers, how bout givers? GIVE Abreu to whoever wants him. GIVE Loperfido a real shot. GIVE it a rest with the same lame “we are too talented” BS every week on the radio. GIVE Jim Crane a hand for running this roster into the ground. And finally, GIVE Jeff Bagwell a bag of rocks to go kick.

You are right on. Crane and Bagwell should get all the credit for the money spent on Montero and Abreu and they have been horrible. They made those moves before Brown took office. Now he needs to package them up and give Tucker the contract he wants and deserves.

The Hader deal. To me, a red flag. That’s an owner call. Experienced GM’s don’t make that kind of a commitment to a closer.

Question. Is Houston a big market or small market town? If big market, maybe Crane and his reps can try to win by buying a team ala LAD or NYY.

But if a small market town, consider yourself extremely blessed. 8 straight playoff appearances for a small market team is truly amazing.

If small market, reset baby! Start selling off pieces now. Don’t let things get to complete rebuild territory.

Owner Crane. How’s your ego hanging?

        @FemboySportsFan!

You have 4 decent SPs in your rotation. It’s not like you’re throwing out minor league fodder and still have the 16th best SP in MLB this year.

        Yusei Kikuchi
        Kevin Gausman
        Chris Bassitt
        José Berríos

Look at Boston, they have no big-names in their rotation and have the 3rd best rotation in MLB. Even KC has lesser known guys and is ranked #2.

The team made a mistake by focusing more on defense that can be seen as the top defensive team in the MLB but with no offense to show for it. Look at PHI, they have the best rotation and pitching in general, offense is ranked #5 and they’re ranked 15th in fielding.

I think it’s time for the Jays to sell off assets and build their team again but I’m guessing they will be stubborn and hold onto the guys right through to the end and hope for a draft pick when one of them signs elsewhere.

If you had the same team from last year, then why would the GM and coach be the reason if they were there last year?

Team needs a full rebuild, but I agree, if the coach hasn’t been able to get them over that hump, it’s time for a change there as well. The core young guys carrying this team just hasn’t panned out.

With all the injuries to their pitching staff and more possibly coming (Javier and Urgidy) and the exit of Bregman (who they won’t pay what he is looking for), they should shed a ton of money and trade Bregman, Pressly and Verlander and see if they can package up Jose Abreu and Raphael Montero and get some quality prospects back to play first and third and some pitching. Sending more prospects from a depleted farm system is not the answer. for Houston this year. Keep the base of Altuve, Pena, Alvarez, Diaz, and Tucker and they just might be able to sneak into a wild card playoffs this year and probably most likely next.

Verlander isn ‘t going anywhere. He has a “no trade” clause in his contract. He had that clause with the Mets and told them he would not go anywhere except Houston. He likes pitching with the Astros.

Yes, Verlander likes pitching for Houston, but he also likes and wants wins and innings so his contract extension kicks in. He wants to be the next pitcher to get to 300 wins and I’m not sure he will get that with Houston.

They are probably good enough to sneak into a WC slot, but whether they have a legit chance of winning in the playoffs is another question.

But just as importantly, I’m not sure how many trade chips they have. Bregman for sure, but I’m not he’ll get a premium return.
