Tigers Notes: Carpenter, Canha, Harris, Spending

By Mark Polishuk | June 1, 2024 at 1:03pm CDT

1:03PM: Canha told reporters (including Petzold) and other reporters that he has a strain of his psoas muscle, but the injury “feels a lot better today” than it did Friday.  Canha won’t play today but intends to be in Sunday’s lineup, and coming out of that game in good health could determine whether or not an IL stint is needed.

9:45AM: Kerry Carpenter was placed on the Tigers’ 10-day injured list earlier this week with what was described as lumbar spine inflammation, but the issue has unfortunately proven to be more serious.  The club announced on Friday that Carpenter “is currently completing rehab for a lumbar spine stress fracture,” with no recovery timeline provided.  Manager A.J. Hinch could have more details during his pregame chat with media later today, but it would appear as though Carpenter will be sidelined for at least a month, and potentially quite longer depending on the severity of the fracture.

It’s tough news for the 26-year-old Carpenter, who has quietly been Detroit’s best hitter since he made his MLB debut during the 2022 season.  After hitting .273/.334/.474 with 26 homers in 572 plate appearances in 2022-23, Carpenter has taken it up another level this year, with a hefty 154 wRC+ from a slash line of .283/.342/.572 and eight home runs in his first 163 PA.

Carpenter’s production has again stood out within a Tigers lineup that has struggled to generate consistent offense.  Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez have earned more playing time due to their solid numbers, while among the players projected to be regulars going into the season, Riley Greene and Mark Canha are the only other batters besides Carpenter who have hit well.  However, Canha’s status is also a question mark after he was scratched from Friday’s lineup due to soreness in his left hip.

“It’s been bothering me for a week or so,” Canha told reporters, including Chris McCosky of the Detroit News.  “It was getting worse and worse and today was the pinnacle.  It got to a point where I had to shut it down.”

For now, Canha is day to day, though he has undergone testing to see if a more serious problem is causing the hip discomfort.  Acquired in a trade with the Brewers last November, Canha has delivered a 120 wRC+ (.247/.358/.401 with six home runs) in his first 215 PA in a Tigers uniform, bouncing around between the DH spot, both corner outfield positions, and some occasional work at first base.  Canha’s numbers have generally been down in May, though one of his best hitting stretches of the season has actually come over the last week of play, when he was hampered by his hip injury.

Needless to say, the Tigers would be hard-pressed to lose both Carpenter and Canha for any notable length of time.  Removing both hitters would put more pressure on Greene, Vierling, and Perez to stay hot, and increase the pressure on Detroit’s many struggling hitters to get on track.  Colt Keith and the Jake Rogers/Carson Kelly catching tandem have started to pick it up after dismal starts to the season, but quite a bit more will be required to dig the Tigers out of their early hole in the AL Central race.  A trendy dark horse pick to win the division heading into the season, the Tigers sit in fourth place with a 28-29 record, 10 games behind the first-place Guardians.

While Detroit still has four months of regular season to cut into that deficit, it is fair to wonder if the clock is really closer to two months, as in the July 30 trade deadline.  The Tigers could conceivably be deadline sellers if they remain around .500 and the Guardians (or the surprising Royals, or the reigning division champion Twins) have all continued to pull away from the pack.  Even if the Tigers do get back into the race, it isn’t clear just how aggressive they might be in making potential additions at the deadline, given that president of baseball operations Scott Harris again reiterated earlier this week that the organization isn’t yet planning any significant payroll boost.

“We’re not quite there yet as far as spending at that level because we need to build the foundation of this team to put us in a position to supplement it with free agent signings in the upcoming winters,” Harris said in an MLB Network interview with Brian Kenny (hat tip to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press).  “I have confidence that the resources will be there. The Ilitch family has always supported the Tigers, and they are ready and eager to do it….We just have to develop the core that we’re going to spend around, and we also have to target the players in upcoming winters that can really help us.”

The Tigers’ payroll has naturally dropped as the club has undergone a lengthy rebuilding period, and Detroit hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since going 86-75 in 2016.  The splashy signings of Javier Baez and Eduardo Rodriguez during the 2021-22 offseason seemed to indicate that the rebuild was over, yet multiple pitching injuries and a near team-wide offensive slump resulted in a 96-loss season.  Former GM Al Avila was fired in August 2022, leading to Harris’ hiring a month later as the person tasked with finally getting the Motor City back into contention.

The end of Miguel Cabrera’s contract removed the Tigers’ biggest financial commitment from the books last winter, plus Rodriguez departed to sign with the Diamondbacks (for four years and $80MM) after opting out of the last three years and $49MM on his Tigers contract.  Still, the team didn’t reinvest those savings back into the roster, as the Tigers opened the season with a payroll of roughly $97.6MM, and only made modest spends this past winter on Canha and free agents Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty.

Baez’s struggles have only worsened over his three seasons in Detroit, and the heretofore disastrous nature of that contract acts as a cautionary tale for those critical of Harris’ measured approach to spending.  That said, Petzold notes that Tarik Skubal’s remaining years of arbitration control (through the 2026 season) might serve as a window for the Tigers to make a push to contend, since Skubal has emerged as one of the best pitchers in baseball this season.  Other promising young starters as well as Greene, Carpenter, and Keith might already form a good enough core to contend, and if Harris and ownership hold off on bigger spending until even more prospects arrive and get established, the timeline might extend past Skubal’s time with the team.  Of course, locking up Skubal to a big extension would be a way for the Tigers to both increase payroll and secure a core player in a single move.

10 games back on June 1st isn’t insurmountable, but in their case it totally is. Shame. I expected more from them

If the offense could get into a rhythm and keep up with the pitching the Tigers could be a fringe Wild Card contender

I’m definitely not happy where they are currently, but injuries happen to every team, and the Tigers have depth. While they probably are past hope for the division, the wild card is still in reach. I just have no faith in Harris providing reinforcements. I could see him sell at the deadline even if they are firmly in the wild card hunt. Why? Because he can, and he doesn’t want to win with Avila’s players. Eventually, he will trade for a player that can fill that third base hole he created. Anyone could trade for someone that is actually a 3B, but converting someone to the position that hasn’t played it before. That takes a Harris.

Genius post, STYMEEDONE! Harris selling at the deadline because he can? He doesn’t want Avila’s players? He created a hole at third base? We are watching your brainpan leak out of your ears. My gawd, when we believe you’ve hit rock bottom with your hatred of Harris. you go even lower.

Like Rsox said the 3B situation has been okay between Urshela, Vierling and Ibanez with Jung in the wings.

Again I don’t get why you keep saying that Harris is not trying g to win with Avila’s guys when most of the key players there were drafted or signed by Avila (Rogers, Tork, Baez, Keith, Greene, Carp, Perez) and he has added mostly good players to supplement (Canha, Ibanez, Vierling). Your argument makes NO sense.

Should Harris be impatient and sell the farm to win now? Then you’d criticize him for that. He has drafted well and made some mostly smart signings and I have not seen any bone head moves like Erod since Greenberg came on board.

Urshela is decent. Solid defender and a mediocre hitter. Vierling defense is shaky… better in the OF. Harris should have signed Matt Chapman. Gold glove defense and power with some OBP. Cody Bellinger in CF… this offense would look much different.
I think they rushed Keith… should have started the season with a platoon of Ibanez and McKinstry.
Should have cut bait on Kelly at catcher and signed Caratini as backup.
          LF Greene
          DH Canha
          CF Bellinger
          3B Chapman
          RF Carpenter
          1B Tork
          2B Ibanez/ McKinstry
          SS Baez
          C Rogers/ Caratini
          Vierling Wenceel on the bench
After the season ends… seriously consider Kim as shortstop and Baez as utility. Try to extend Flaherty and go after Fried… Skubal, Flaherty, Fried, Olsen, Mize would be a top rotation. Maybe trade Manning for a couple prospects… If Jobe is ready… maybe deal Mize or Olsen.

Looking to 2025… The moves the Tigers should make.
          Sign Danny Jansen as catcher.
Try and sign either Bregman or Olson for 3B.
          Resign Flaherty
          Sign Fried

          SS Kim
          LF Greene
          3B Bregman/Chapman
          RF Carpenter
          1B Tork
          2B Keith
          C Jansen
          DH Malloy
          CF Wenceel
Bench Rogers, P Meadows, Baez, Vierling

Rotation: Skubal, Flaherty, Fried, Mize, Olsen

What about Jung and Jobe who will be ready by 2025? I like some of your ideas, especially Kim, Jansen and Bregman. Swap Fried for Jobe and use that money elsewhere. Maybe Jung becomes trade bait to address other needs.

I’m more worried at their inability to develop players from minors to majors than lack of spending. If you can’t develop, no amount of spending can win you anything of significance.

This 100%. The Guardians, for example, have a cheapskate owner, but because they’ve had success developing prospects (particularly pitchers), they’ve been able to win games and make the postseason most years. I feel like the situation the Tigers are in is a carryover from the Mike Illitch era, where the team would address needs via free agency rather than utilizing the farm system.

I actually believe in the method he is using. I can’t argue that having a core in place is necessary before a team spends on a big name in free agency.

But, as far as I’m concerned, Harris is sitting on two strikes. First, the botched E-Rod trade. Second, heavily imbalanced team he put on the field indicates he really stinks at basic team building (what’s the point in having one of the best pitching staffs in baseball with even more depth in the organization if you are going to have league worst offense? No professional GM builds a team like that).

I also like how he is building the team up. Developing a sustainable farm so you can have the next man up like Houston and TB have been able to do.

I’m not happy with the Erod trade but I think Erod gets some of the blame there. I don’t think this offence is as bad as it has looked and with Keith and the catchers coming around the biggest gap is Baez the AlbatroSS who is a guy Avila signed. He needs to go. If Canha is hurt they need to call up Malloy and give him a shot. It’s time.

So far with Greenberg on board things have looked much better. If they could go get the right young hitter to complement the core that would be great. They have the prospect capital to do it.

E-Rod definitely gets some of the blame in the sports columns. But, ultimately, it was Harris who was responsible to get a deal done and he didn’t. We can all speculate on what went wrong here, but from an organizational standpoint, the responsibility of making a deal falls on Harris and Harris alone. He let a valuable but rapidly depreciating asset become worthless by holding on to it when he knew it was becoming worthless. He even knew the exact date it would become worthless. The Detroit Tigers are worse off today for this trade not being executed.

I wish we knew who they were sending over. Perhaps one day, we will.

Unfortunately, the Tigers are probably out of playoff contention. There’s not really a way for this team to overcome a 10 game deficit with its offense. What a waste of having 3 (too) early Cy Young candidates in your rotation.

That almost certainly means Jack Flaherty will be available at the deadline. Who needs a reliable RH starter that is a league leader in strikeouts and what young stud hitter are you prepared to send?

I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see it. There’s an organization wide problem with hitting instruction. There’s literally no reason to believe that they will suddenly provide enough offense on a consistent basis to make a playoff run. Even if they do, it wouldn’t be a deep playoff run.

Cleveland and KC don’t have the players to sustain their starts. They will fade soon.

Flaherty has been successful here but he’s on a one year contract so are they really going to get anything great for a rental? If they are out of it at the deadline (which i dont think they will be), then I wouldn’t mind if they traded him and then resigned him in the offseason. Another example of Fetter magic.

Maybe they should approach the Mets about a Tork, Jung plus young pitching not named Jobe trade for 1B Alonso, 3B Baty and Parada so they have a good catching prospect.

Obviously they would have to play well too and there is still Minnesota and many other teams hovering around the same record. Uphill climb. My point was those two teams are playing beyond their respective skills and should vote back to earth at some point.

Trade with the Mets…. they have a huge payroll… would a swap of Baez for Lindor be possible? Baez only has 3 more years $73M… Lindor 7 years $239M and he’s been worse than expected.
People complain about Baez… would they feel better with Lindor? He got MVP votes last year.

If they Mets want to get out fron under that big contract, send Baez, Tork, Jung and some good minor league pitching not named Jobe to the Mets for Lindor, Alonso, Parada and Baty. Fill some needs on both teams.

I’m hearing rumors that Malloy is not happy. He may ask for a trade soon. Thinks Detroit doesn’t want him to succeed because he is

If he’s unhappy, then it’s on him for not working hard enough on improving his defense. If we trade him now, we wouldn’t get diddlysquat for him and he’ll likely face the same problems with his next team too. There’s no shortage of positionless, good minor league hitters out there. I do hope we call him up at some point this season though.

I would understand that if Miggy were still on the team. He isn’t. The Tigers have been playing Kelly and Rogers at DH against LH pitching. They can still rotate at the spot against RHs. There is no need for him to be a gold Glover in the field, right now. They need a bat. He fits that need. No one is telling them not to continue helping him defensively once called up.

You continue to be just plain clueless, STYMEEDONE. The Tigers aren’t going to call up someone to be exclusively a DH! They need someone with some sort of fielding skills. Malloy isn’t as bad in the field as people think he is and deserves a shot.

Of course he can play in the field, but but they don’t have an open spot where the team would be better served with him playing the position, other than dh. its probably his best position anyway. If he pinch hits, of course he plays the field. He’s basically Barbaro Garbey.

Again more stupidly from you STYMEEDONE! Again, the Tigers are NOT going to promote someone to exclusively be a DH. Christ, you’re an idiot. If only we had the pre-Harris STYMEEDONE back. Since then, you’re developed a brain worm.

Hopefully they call him up soon and give him a chance. I think they signed Canha to give Malloy more time to tweak things.

STYMEEDONE, nobody said he was. All I’ve seen mentioned is he’s unhappy and the commenter said he wouldn’t be surprised if he demanded a trade, the above comment from WestVillageTiger which doesn’t mention Malloy at all and dkhits20 which intimates Malloy but doesn’t state he’s demanding a trade. That brain worm continues to eat what’s left of your so.called organ between your ears.

Do you have a source for JHM not being happy? I read a lot of articles on all things Tigers and have every major writer on Twitter . There hasn’t been any talk of him being unhappy. Not even rumors. So, curious as to your source so I can go down that rabbit hole.

    Thanks

I’ll be happy if the Tigers can somehow get the farm system pumping out good prospects. Ownership has actually shown that they will spend money, but the Tigers need for the FO to have 60-75 % of the 20 whatever man roster with decent players before Illich will up the payroll to sign some decent free agents. Sort of like 2004 or so when they had the prospects who weren’t busts and management signed Vina, Urbina, Percival, Ordonez, and Rodriguez in 2 or 3 winters. I’ll give Harris a pass on signing big free agents for a few seasons because they are waiting on the prospects, but if these new runs of prospects turn out to be more guys like Torkelson, Mize, and Manning instead of front line starters and capable hitters, they need to boot him out of town in 2-3 years. This rebuild is getting old and there is no reason they can’t compete as long as they get some prospects to go along with future big name free agent signings. 2006 and 2012 were painful and I’m ready for a Tigers title.

All you guys are focused on being 10 games out.

This is the “New MLB” though, aka closer to/like NHL/NBA, where 6 teams in each league make the playoffs.

So with that in mind…Tigers are NOT 10 games out — they are 3.5 out of the playoffs, with only the team they are playing today, Boston, ahead of them by a 1/2 game. A win over today and they would be the first team out of the playoffs, 3 or 3.5 back.

THAT is not insurmountable, considering the 5th seed and 6th seed are BOTH AL CENTRAL teams, in KC and Minnesota.

Take care of business in AL Central–win 2 out of 3 games, play 500 ball against rest of MLB and a playoff spot is almost guaranteed.
